Warren L. Williams, Sr. age 60, of 768 Okisko Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, October 30, 2002 at his residence. He was born in Pasquotank County son of the late Alton Williams, and Mary Wright Williams Goodwin of Hertford, NC, and was the husband of Louise Weaver Williams of the residence. Mr. Williams worked as an electrician for the Cotton Mill, and was former owner of Winfall Auto Tech, and he loved to fish.
Besides his wife and mother he is survived by two daughters, Rhonda Bradley of Moyock, NC, and Monica Onley of Elizabeth City, NC; two sons, Warren Williams, Jr. and Terry A. Williams, both of Elizabeth City, NC; two sisters, Alice Faye Jones and Vivian L. Hale, both of Edenton, NC; four grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted Sunday, November 3, 2002 at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Reverend Kelly Lacy officiating. Burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives at the funeral home Saturday evening from 7:00 PM till 8:00 PM. At other times the family will be at the residence, 768 Okisko Road, Elizabeth City, NC. Milton Elliss Phthisic, Sr.

Milton Elliss Phthisic, Sr., 68, died at his residence, 126 Ranch Drive, on October 29, 2002. Born in Perquimans County, he was the son of the late Wilbur M. and Dorothy Cartwright Phthisic, formerly of Belvidere, NC and was a retired truck driver.
Mr. Phthisic is survived by his wife of 38 years, Lynda Davis Phthisic, and four sons; Milton E. Phthisic, Jr. of Belvidere, NC, Ricky L. Phthisic, David Michael Phthisic, and Steven E. Phthisic, all of Elizabeth City, NC. He was a loving grandfather, survived by 12 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Other survivers include a brother, Johnnie Phthisic of Belvidere, NC, and two sisters Doris Hollowell of Hobbsville, NC, and Faye Proctor of Hertford, NC . He was predeceased by a grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, November 2, 2002 in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel at 1:00 PM with Pastor Scott Neal officiating. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Hubert G. ‘Skeeter’ Hughes, Jr., 53, of 408 Alton Street, Elizabeth City died Sunday evening, October 27, 2002, in the Albemarle Hospital. He was born in New Bern, NC to the late Hubert Glenn Hughes, Sr. and Laura Daughtery Hughes. He was a retired long shore man with the Portsmouth International Terminal.
Mr. Hughes is survived by a very close companion, Cindy Mitnick of the home, and several aunts, uncles and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, October 30, 2002, at 2:00pm in the Twiford’s Northside Chapel, 1115 N. Road St., Elizabeth City. Burial will be in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will greet friends and relatives in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the funeral service and at other times at the residence. Twiford’s Northside Chapel, 1115 N. Lessie Mae Johnson Burton, age 93, of 901 West Elizabeth Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, October 23, 2002, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Burton was a native of Chowan County, NC, the widow of Ralph Jerome Burton, and the daughter of the late James Washington Johnson and Laura Virginia Sawyer. She was the retired president, owner, and saleslady for Burton Mercantile Company. Having lived most of her live in Elizabeth City she was the oldest member of Fountain of Life Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Mrs. Burton is survived by a son, Monty M., and his wife Joyce, Marsh of Elizabeth City, NC; a sister, Selma, and her husband Elwood, Ritchie of Elizabeth City, NC; a grandson, Terry, and his wife Catherine, Marsh of Gretna, LA; two grandchildren, Jennifer, and her husband Mike, Waters, and Terry Marsh, Jr.; one great grandson, Joseph Monty Waters, and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be Saturday, October 26, 2002, at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Bill Mayo officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately after the service in the lobby of the funeral home and at other times at the residence of the son, Mr. & Mrs. Monty M. Vernon Grant James, Sr., 92 of Pasquotank County, NC died Monday, October 21, 2002 at his residence. He was born in Pasquotank Co., NC, son of the late John Calvin and Fanny Coppersmith James and was the husband of Thelma Sanders James. He was a charter member of the NC 4-H Honor Club, The NC House of Representatives for 26 years, Salem Baptist Church, Eureka Lodge 317 AF & AM, Elizabeth City York Bodies and Sudan Shrine Temple of New Bern, NC.
Besides his wife, Mr. James is survived by a daughter, Joyce Beutler of Mapleton, UT; a son, Alan Sanders of Hickory, North Carolina; two sisters, Jemima Markham and Irene Roberson, both of Elizabeth City, NC; a brother, William James of Winfall, NC; twelve grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Selma Harris James; two sons, John Thomas James, Sr. and Vernon Grant James, Jr.; four sisters, Vivian Daniels, Louise Morrisette, Myra Trueblood, and Elizabeth Williamson and two brothers, Rueben James and Ernest James.
A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, October 24 at 10:00 AM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC with Rev. Michael Jordan officiating. Burial will follow in the Salem Baptist Church Cemetery. A memorial service will held at the Fine Arts Center of ECSU at 4:00 PM Thursday. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, it was Mr. James’s wish that any donations be made to the Vernon James Scholarship, c/o 4-H Development Fund, Box 7645, Raleigh, NC 27695-7645.

David Edison Tarkington, 49, of 288 Body Road, Hertford, NC, died Saturday, October 19, 2002 at Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Tulsa, OK. He was born in Pasquotank County, NC, the son of the late John Edison and Thelma Maitland Tarkington and was the husband of Rebecca Futrell Tarkington of the home. He was a boat builder with Regulator Marine in Edenton, NC.
Besides his wife, Mr. Tarkington is survived by a daughter, Kelli Tarkington of Elizabeth City, NC; a step daughter, Amanda Wiggins and husband Atibu of Hertford, NC; a brother, Gene Tarkington of MD and a grandson, Armante’ Jones of Hertford, NC. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dallas Tarkington.
A graveside service will be conducted on Thursday, October 24, 2002 at 2:00 pm at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel on Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:30 pm and at other times at the residence.

Edward Joseph Winkler

Edward Joseph Winkler, age 77, of 1383 South Highway 343, Shiloh, NC, died at his residence on Friday, October 18, 2002. He was born in Lima, Ohio, son of the late Edward John and Marie Matthiae Winkler, and was the husband of Catherine Wingling Winkler of the residence. He was retired from the U.S. Navy as a FTC and served in WWII and the Korean War. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve in Elizabeth City, Virginia Beach Masonic Lodge #174, American Association of Retired Persons, and the Knobbs Creek Seniors Club.
Besides his wife Mr. Winkler is survived by: one daughter Kathylee Pullin of Everette, Washington; one son Jonathan Edward Pullin of Beechwood, New Jersey; two sisters, Charlene Wright of Austin Texas, and Rose Marie Norton of Lima, OH; one brother Jerry Winkler of Lima, OH; three grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
Memorial services will be conducted Tuesday, October 22, 2002 at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel by Rev. David Moehring. Vivian Fay Brinson Daveiro, 72, of 104 Gaston Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, October 15, 2002 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Elizabeth City, NC, the daughter of the late James and Margaret Forbes Brinson and was the widow of Louis Alfred Daveiro. She was a homemaker and a member of Elizabeth City Rebecca Lodge # 62.
Mrs. Daveiro is survived by a daughter, Sherry Godfrey and husband Wayne of Elizabeth City; a son, Louis Alfred Daveiro, Jr. and wife Susan of Elizabeth City; a brother, James Brinson of Elizabeth City; and four grandchildren, J. W. Godfrey, Jamie Daveiro, Janna Godfrey, and Josie Daveiro all of Elizabeth City. She was preceded in death by a sister, Charlotte Godfrey, and two brothers, Hubert and George Brinson.

George Edward Philbrick, age 62, of 1901 Ulster Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, October 12, 2002 in Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Providence, RI, son of the late Joseph Edward and Winfred Goff Philbrick, and was the husband of Judith James Philbrick of the residence. He was in the United States Coast Guard, a member of the USCG Auxiliary and a member of the Madison Marine Patrol of Connecticut.
Besides his wife, Mr. Philbrick is survived by a daughter Susan V. Philbrick of Virginia Beach, VA, a son William E. Philbrick of Clinton, CT, a sister Barbara Carey of Hockessin, DE, and an uncle, George A. Philbrick of Palm Bay, FL.

Etta P. Mann
Mrs. Etta Pierce Mann, 90, formerly of Northside Road, Elizabeth City, NC died Monday, October 14, 2002 at Carolina Living in Elizabeth City. She was a native of South Mills, NC; daughter of the late Charlie Henry and Narcissia Laurietta Stewart Pierce and was the widow of Rex Mann.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Elizabeth City, NC and retired in 1973 from Hopkins Brothers as a bookkeeper.
Mrs. Mann is survived by a step daughter, Jean M. Wallace, four step grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted on Wednesday, October 16, 2002 at 2:00 pm in New Hollywood Cemetery with the Rev. Glenn Greenway officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence of Audrey Harris, 1690 Morgan’s Corner Road, Elizabeth City, NC.
