Clara S. Leary

Clara Sears Leary, 86, of Shawboro, NC died Thursday evening, November 28, 2002, in the Winslow Memorial Home. She was born in Currituck County, NC to the late Robert Edward and Luna Alden Barnard Sears and was the widow of the late Christopher Columbus Leary, III. She was a member of the Providence Baptist Church.

Mrs. Leary is survivied by a daughter, Rosa ‘Stevie’ Northwood of Elizabeth City; two sons, Christopher C. Leary IV of Shawboro and Wayne Sears Leary of Camden; a sister, Anne Sears Meads of Shawboro; a brother, Howard M. Sears of Chesapeake, Va. and a grandson, Mark H. Johnston of Nags Head.

The family will receive family and friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, Church St., Elizabeth City, Sunday, December 1, 2002, from 3:00 until 5:00pm. The family suggests in lieu of flowers memorial gifts be made to the Salvation Army, P. O. Box 1967, Elizabeth City, NC 27909. The body will be cremated and no services are planned at the present time.

Carol D. Lamb

Carol Dempsey Lamb, age 70, of 859 Four Mile Desert Road, Hertford, NC, died Tuesday, November 26, 2002, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Lamb, a native of Perquimans County, was the widower of Renia Meads Lamb and the son of the late Louis Dempsey Lamb and Mary Ellie Ferrell Lamb. He was the owner and operator of C. D. Lamb, Inc.

Mr. Lamb is survived by two daughters, Donna Stevenson, and her finance Neil Norman, and Glennett Spruill, and her husband Wesley, all of Hertford, NC; two brothers, Maxie Lamb, Sr., and James Lamb, both of Hertford, NC; two sisters, Hattie Harris and Florence Boone, both of Elizabeth City, NC; a half sister, Mildred Papouchous of Virginia Beach, VA; five grand children, Brad Stevenson and his wife Michelle, Kim Harris and her husband Buddy, Anne Cuthrell, Tyler Spruill, and Glenda Spruill; two great grand children, Ethan Stevenson and Haley Stevenson; his mother-in-law, Delia Meads of Elizabeth City, NC, and a son-in-law, Tommy Speight of Hertford, NC. He was predeceased by a daughter, Carolyn Lamb Speight.

Funeral services will be Friday, November 29, 2002, at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. William Rembert and the Rev. Roland Cooper officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Stuart Meads officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence of the daughter, Mr. & Mrs. Wesley Spruill, 869 Four Mile Desert Road, Hertford, NC.

Sarah F. Brabble

Sarah Forbes Brabble, age 85, of 228 Maple Rd., Maple, NC died Monday, November 25, 2002 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Currituck Co., NC; daughter of the late John S. and Elizabeth Sawyer Forbes and was the widow of Johnny Brabble. She was a member of Rehoboth Baptist Church.

Mrs. Brabble is survived by several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, November 29, 2002 at 2:00 PM in Rehoboth Baptist Church with Rev. Dale Pace and Rev. Bobby Owens officiating. Burial will follow in the Snowden Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the burial.

Lewis B. Blanchard, Jr.

Lewis Beacher Blanchard, Jr., 63, of 270 North Indiantown Road, Shawboro, NC, died Monday, November 25, 2002 at Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Maple, NC, the son of Ruby Carawan Blanchard of Barco, NC and the late Lewis Beacher Blanchard, Sr. and was the husband of Rosa Roberts Blanchard of the home. He was a retired automotive school teacher with the Currituck County High School and was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Besides his wife and mother, Mr. Blanchard is survived by three daughters, Becky Thompson of Rockford, MI, Karen Allen of Buzzard’s Bay, MA, and Donna Perdue of Shawboro, NC; one son, William Blanchard of Elizabeth City, NC; three sisters, Ann Wendling of Eagle Rock, VA, Anita Williams of Virginia Beach, VA, and Carolyn Litchfield of Clinton, MD; four brothers, James Blanchard of Virginia Beach, VA, Wayne Blanchard of Gatesville, NC, Thomas Blanchard of Harbinger, NC, and Edwin Blanchard of Cary, NC; and five grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, November 29, 2002 at 11:00 am at Emmanuel Baptist Church by the Rev. Ed Hawkins. Burial will be at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service and at other times at the residence.

John Vernon Russell, III, age 55, of 146 Texas Road, Old Trap, NC, died Sunday, November 24, 2002 in the Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Old Trap, NC; son of Margaret Forbes Russell Burgess of Old Trap, NC and the late John Vernon Russell, Jr. Mr. Russell worked as a Diesel Mechanic and served in the US Air Force.

He is survived by two daughters; Michelle Mills of Lexington, SC, and Denise Norris of Elizabeth City, NC; two sons, John Vernon Russell, IV of Havelock, NC, and Brian Russell of San Diego, CA; three sisters, Darlene McDonald of Vanceboro, NC, Deloras Meads of Elizabeth City, NC, and Teresa Swinson of Old Trap, NC; one brother, William Russell of Old Trap, NC; and five grandchildren, Jessica Mills, Yoshi Russell, RexAnn Mills, Taylor Norris, and Ashley Russell.

Samuel Jolly, Jr.

Col. Ret. Samuel B. Jolly, Jr., 72, of Swan Circle, Point Harbor, NC, died Monday morning, November 25, 2002, at his residence. He was born in Wilmington, NC to the late Samuel B. and Adelle Singletary Jolly. Col. Jolly retired from the U. S. Air Force after 24 years of service; he was a member and deacon of the Powells Point Baptist Church and was very active in the Chowan Baptist Association.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jo Ann Maultsby Jolly; two sons, Stephen A. Jolly of Virginia Beach, VA and Joseph S. Jolly of Richmond, VA; a daughter, Jennifer Marsh of Chapin, SC; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, November 27, 2002, at 2:00pm in the Powells Point Baptist Church by Revs. Herbert Hemingway and Eugene McLawhorn. Gettis Harris, Jr., 75, of 356 N. Spot Road, Powells Point, NC died Sunday morning, November 24, 2002, in the Sentara Barco Nursing Home. He was born in Currituck County to the late Gettis and Ruth Mercer Harris and was the widower of the late Wilma Sawyer Bohannon Harris. Mr. Harris was retired from the Ford Motor Company, a member of the Powells Point Baptist Church and member of the Currituck Masonic Lodge #463 AF & AM.

He is survived by two daughters, Ruth Ann Perry of Powells Point, NC and Dottie B. Jordan of Aydlett, NC; two sons, Gettis Michael Harris of Harbinger, NC and William P. Bohannon III of Bladenboro, NC; three sisters, Elma George, Frances Moore both of Virginia Beach, VA and Gloria Poyner of Coinjock, NC; eleven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson.

A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday morning, November 27, 2002, at 11:00am in the Powells Point Baptist Church by Revs. Eugene McLawhorn and Larry Benson. The family will be at 356 N. Gladys J. Nelson

Gladys Jacobsen Nelson, 79, of Long Island, NY and formerly of Elizabeth City died Friday, November 22, 2002, in Long Island. She was a native of Brooklyn, NY and was the daughter of the late Nils and Helene Rienersten Jacobsen and widow of the late Russell Nelson. She was a retired county employee in New York.

Surviving Mrs. Nelson are a daughter Elaine Brea of Roslyn Heights, NY, a son, Russell Nelson of Potsdam, NY; a sister, Ruth Hurley of Baldwin, NY and four grandchildren.

Graveside services will be conducted Monday afternoon, November 25, 2002, at 3:00pm in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery by Father Stan Easty. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, Church St., Elizabeth City is in charge of local arrangements.

Milton Lester Spruill, Jr.

Milton Lester Spruill, Jr., age 70, of 116 Beechtree Drive, Shiloh, NC, died Thursday, November 14, 2002 in Lexington Medical Center, West Columbia, SC. He was born in Pasquotank County, NC, son of the late Milton Lester Spruill, Sr., and the late Elizabeth Cartwright Spruill and was the husband of Lillian Josselyn Spruill of the residence. Mr. Spruill was a retired civil service worker for the United States Coast Guard (ARSC). He also served in the United States Air Force, and was a member and Past Master of the Masonic Hall Lodge #53 AF & AM. He was a Methodist.

Besides his wife Mr. Spruill is survived by three daughters; Ruth Ann Burgess of Shiloh, NC, Lillian Mae Warden of Camden, NC, and Mary Catherine Reynolds of Lexington, SC; one son, Russell E. Rupert, Jr. of Shiloh, NC; and three grandchildren.

A funeral service will held on Saturday, November 16, 2002 in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel at 3:00 PM. Burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery with Masonic Rites. Sara Margaret Bright Twiford, age 87, of Elizabeth City, NC died Monday, November 11, 2002 in Guardian Care Nursing Home. She was born in Pasquotank County, daughter of the late Ernest LaSalle Bright and Christian Cornelius Warden Bright, and was the widow of Leslie J. Twiford. Mrs. Twiford was retired from Emmanuel Day Care Center and was a charter member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.

She is survived by three daughters, Melva T. Hardison and husband, Charles, of Camden, NC, Dawn Miller and husband, David, of Elizabeth City, NC, and Velma Dean Saunders and husband, Buck, of Zephyrhills, Fl.; one son, John Thomas Twiford of Elizabeth City, NC; one sister Vilma Umphlett of Elizabeth City, NC; ten grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, November 14, 2002, at 11:00am in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Ed Hawkins officiating. Burial will be in Old Hollywood Cemetery. The family will greets friends and relatives in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service.
