Jesse E. Colbert, Jr.

Chesapeake Jesse Edward Colbert, Jr., 74, died Monday, December 26, 2005. Mr. Colbert was born in Rocky Mount, NC to the late Rosa Elling Gaither and Jesse E. Colbert, Sr. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Colbert was a member of the Hickory Ruritan Club, the Woodmen of the World and the Hickory United Methodist Church, where he had served as a dedicated trustee. He was also a former member of the Hickory Nut Band. Mr. Colbert was predeceased by his loving wife, Hazel Maybel Colbert.
Left to cherish his memory are sons, Hilton Ray Windham and wife Diana of Virginia Beach, and Michael Floyd Colbert of Chesapeake; beloved niece Sabrina Pettrie and husband Ray of Chesapeake; sisters, Dorothy Vann and husband Hymann of Virginia Beach and Annie Webb of Rocky Mount, NC; grandchildren, Kenneth, Kristy, John and Tammy and thirteen great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 1:00pm at Twifordé–’s Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake with Rev. Tom Mercer officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Walton Lee Straley

Walton ‘Walt’ L. Straley, 90, of 3850 Mooreshore Road, Kitty Hawk, NC died Monday evening in the Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Mercersburg, PA, to the late John E. and Mary E. Allison Straley. Mr. Straley was the widower of the late Anna Hester Bobbitt McMullan Straley. He was a retired Greyhound bus driver for the Pittsburgh Bus Line, a member of the B. P. O. Elks #856, a Methodist, a member of the American Legion and a veteran of World War II. Mr. Straley was also a former employee for the Kitty Hawk Fishing Pier and a loyal employee of many years for Walter R. Davis.

He is survived by a stepson, Charles O. ‘C.O.’ McMullan and wife, Audrey, of Elizabeth City, a step granddaughter, Wanda McMullan of Elizabeth City, a sister, Izetta Creamer of Chambersburg, PA, two nephews, John Cramer and Gilbert Cramer of PA, a niece, Pam Cramer of PA, and one step great grandchild. He is also survived by a devoted loving friend, Linda Bonds of the home. Mr. Straley was preceded in death by a brother, George Straley and a step grandson, Monty Jolley.

Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, December 19, 2002, at 2:00pm in the Austin Cemetery, Kitty Hawk by Rev. Eugene McLawhorn. Immediately following the funeral service, the family will greet friends and relatives at the gravesite. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. O. McMullan, 801 W. Colonial Avenue, Elizabeth City, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts in his memory be made to either the Kitty Hawk Fire Dept., Kitty Hawk, NC, or to the B.P.O. Elks #856, 400 East Fearing Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909, or to one’s favorite charity.

Fannie Forbes Gallop

Fannie Forbes Gallop, 97, of 162 Texas Road, Shiloh, NC, died Thursday, December 12, 2002 in South Port, NC. She was born in Camden County, NC to the late Jonathan Parker and Mary Elizabeth Riggs Forbes and was the widow of Sim Forbes Gallop. She was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and its United Methodist Women.

Survivors include four sisters, Martha Vaughn and Nellie Forbes both of Perry, GA; Dorothy Forbes of Statesville, NC; and Isabelle Kight of Shiloh, NC; a brother, Elton Forbes of Chesapeake, VA and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday morning, December 14, 2002, at 11:00am in the Wesley United Methodist Church by Rev. David Moehring. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will be at the home of Gid and Isabelle Kight, 118 Texas Road, Shiloh, NC.

Luther Douglas Holmes

L. Douglas Holmes, 76, of 104 Scotland Drive, Elizabeth City died Wednesday night, December 11, 2002, in the Winslow Memorial Home. He was born in Pasquotank County to the late Edward Wallace and Beuna Vista Brinson Holmes. He was retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, a member of the Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church and served in World War II with the merchant marines.

He is survived by his wife, Lora Fay Norfleet Holmes of the home, two daughters, Ellen Holmes Russell of Elizabeth City, NC and Teresa Holmes Richardson of Simpsonville, NC; three sons, Terry Douglas Holmes of Shreveport, LA, Mark Alan Holmes of Elizabeth City and Kevin Paul Holmes of Raleigh, NC; and nine grandchildren.

A gathering of family and friends will be Saturday evening, December 14, 2002, from 7:00 until 8:30pm at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC. There will be a private memorial service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church, 700 North Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909 or to The Salvation Army, P. O. Walter Nixon

Walter Nixon, 87, of 230 Whitehat Road, Hertford, NC, died Wednesday, December 11, 2002 at his residence. He was born in Perquimans County, NC, the son of the late James Adam and Lillie Bell Chapell Nixon and was the husband of Margaret Morris Nixon of the residence. He was a self employed farmer.

Besides his wife, Mr. Nixon is survived by two daughters, Mary Ella Green of Elizabeth City, NC and Sarah Nixon of Kitty Hawk, NC; two sons, Lloyd Wallace Nixon of Moyock, NC and James Lee Nixon of Kitty Hawk, NC; one sister, Kathleen Banks of Hertford, NC; nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Walter Ray Nixon.

A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, December 13, 2002 at 11:00 AM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Doug Cook. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery. The family will be at the residence. Memorial donations may be made to Faith Baptist Church, 113 Foxboro Drive, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Myron Willis Chamberlin

Myron Willis Chamberlin, age 95, of 58 Hickory Trail, Southern Shores, NC, died Sunday, December 8, 2002 in Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Three Rivers, MA, son the late Myron Kinney and Fannie E. Calkins Chamberlin. He was the widower of Helen Hendrie Chamberlin. Mr. Chamberlin was a retired Civil Service worker for the US Naval Oceanographic Office in Norfolk, VA and served as a Merchant Marine during World War II serving with the Esso Company. He was a First Mate on the SS Abrams which was torpedoed off the coast of Hatteras during World War II. He graduated from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, and was a member of the Thomas Lodge A.F. & A.M.

Mr. Chamberlin is survived by a stepson, Robert Kettell and his wife Carolyn of Cincinnati, Ohio; several nieces and nephews; three step grandchildren and two step great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Massachusetts. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Johnny Lockwood Morgan

Johnny Lockwood Morgan, age 85, of 106 South McMorrine Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, December 9, 2002 at his residence.
He was a born in Camden, NC, son of the late James Taylor Morgan, Jr. and Mattie Williams Morgan Smith. Mr. Morgan worked as a cook for Hardee’s Restaurant and was a member of Sawyer’s Creek Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by two sisters, Doris Whitehurst, and Nina Perry of Hertford, NC, and one brother, Elmer Lee Smith of Elizabeth City, NC.

Graveside service will be Wednesday, December 11, 2002 at 11:00 AM in the Morgan Family Cemetery. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Curtis Wilbert Pierce, age 88, of 1147 North 343, South Mills, NC died Sunday, December 8, 2002 at his residence. He was born in Old Trap, NC, son of the late Benjamin F. and Lydia Forbes Pierce and the husband of Aline Sawyer Pierce of the residence. Mr. Pierce attended New Beginnings Assembly of God and was an equipment operator for the City of Portsmouth.

Beside his wife, Mr. Pierce is survived by a daughter, Kay P. Banks and husband James A. of South Mills, NC; a son John D. Pierce of South Mills, NC; a sister Lorrine Forbes of Riddle, NC; five grandchildren, Amy C. Banks, Jason A. Banks, Deena P. Hankins, Tammy P. Cutrell, and Kevin Pierce; and two great grandchildren, Cody Hankins and Jordan Cutrell.

A funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, December 11, 2002 at 2:00pm with the Rev. Carroll Daniels officiating. Burial will be in the Sawyer Family Cemetery. Following the service the family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Mrs. Sallie Stone Tebo, age 82, of 146 Gabbard Lane, Powells Point, NC, died Monday, December 2, 2002, at Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Tebo was born in Lumberton, NC, the daughter of the late Lyman H. and Bessie Allen Stone and was the widow of Garland Tebo. She worked for the U.S. Civil Service and was a member of Powells Point Baptist Church.

Mrs. Stone is survived by one daughter, Sallie Kay Dennis of Blair, OK and one brother, James Stone of Powells Point, NC, four grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Douglas Mayers.

A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, December 5, 2002 at 11:00 AM in Powells Point Baptist Church with the Rev. Eugene McLawhorn and Rev. Herbert Hemingway officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will be at the residence of James and Ruth Stone, 140 Gabbard Lane, Powells Point, NC.
