Evelyn Lassiter Bays, 86, of Main St., Gatesville, NC died Thursday, January 30, 2003, at her residence surrounded by her family. Mrs. Bays was born on September 4, 1916 in Gates County. She was the daughter of the late Harry and Irene Lassiter and was the widow of Retired Army Master Sergeant Delbert H. Bays. Her only sister, Willie Marie Cummings preceded her in death.

She is survived by two daughters, Margaret Ann Tankovich and husband, Jim, of Herndon, VA. and Lillian Taylor and husband, Richard of Suffolk, VA, two granddaughters, Catherine and Elizabeth Tankovich. Also, she is survived by a niece Sharron Cummings Hill and a nephew, Harvey F. Cummings, II.

Graveside services will be conducted Saturday, February 1, 2003,at 11:00am in the Eure Christian Church Cemetery by Rev. Wayne Gardner. Viewing will be in the Miller Funeral Home, Main St., Gatesville on Friday, Jan. 31, 2003. The family will receive friends and relatives at her residence, 217 Main Street, Gatesville. Louis Kenneth Hall, 68, of 1108 East Williams Circle, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, January 28, 2003 at Norfolk Sentara.. He was born in Perquimans County, NC to the late George Lewis and Susan Marie Symons Hall. He was a retired lieutenant with the Elizabeth City Police Department having served for thirty years, a member and deacon of the First Christian Church, a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Eureka Lodge #347 AF & AM, and Scottish Rites Bodies of New Bern.

Mr. Hall is survived by his wife, Ann White Hall of the home; a daughter, Mary Sue Moore of Fuquay Varina, NC; a son, Kenneth ‘Buddy’ Hall of Elizabeth City, NC; a sister, Nell Hall White of Fountain Valley, CA; a brother, William Gerald Hall of Aulander, NC; and two grandchildren, Nathan and Lindsay Katherine Moore.

A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, January 31, 2003 at 11:00 AM at the First Christian Church by the Rev. Dr. Jerry Burton. Burial will follow at New Hollywood Cemetery. A visitation will be on Thursday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the funeral home and at other times the family will be at the residence. Sawyer Helen Hill

Helen Hill Sawyer, age 83 of Winslow Memorial Nursing Home, died Thursday, January 23, 2003 in Albemarle Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Grover E. and Mattie Davenport Hill, and the widow of Cliff Sawyer, Jr. Mrs. Sawyer had worked with Real Estate Rentals and was a member of Christ Episcopal Church.

She is survived by two nephews James and William (Bill) Furtwangler both of California, a cousin Laura Lee Riddick of Elizabeth City NC. Mrs. Sawyer was preceded in death by a sister Mary Elizabeth Hill Furtwangler.

Charles Oscar “C.O.” McMullan

Charles Oscar ‘C. O.’ McMullan, 79 of 801 West Colonial Avenue, Elizabeth City, NC died Monday, January 27, 2003 at his residence. He was born in Elizabeth City, NC to the late William Oscar McMullan and the late Anna Hester Bobbitt McMullan Straley. He graduated from Elizabeth City High School, received his Bachelor’s Degree from East Carolina Teaching College, and received his Master’ Degree in Physical Education from Columbia University. He was a retired school teacher and coach, a member of First United Methodist Church, a member and past president of Pine Lakes Country Club, a member and past chaplain of B.P.O. Elks #856, a member of the V.F.W. Post #6060, and a veteran of World War II having served in the United States Coast Guard.

Mr. McMullan is survived by his wife of fifty years, Audrey Heath McMullan of the home; a daughter, Wanda McMullan of the home; a granddaughter, Michelle Collier and husband Brian of Falls Church, VA; two sisters, Julia Fearing Koch of Allentown, PA and Kathleen Fearing Eady of Birmingham, AL; a brother, Elbert ‘Ellie’ Fearing of Portsmouth, VA; a brother-in-law, Bill Heath of Laurel, MA; and many devoted nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by a son, Hugh M. Jolley and a step-father, Walton L. Straley.

A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, January 30, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Glenn Brigman and the Rev. Clyde Denny. Burial will be in Old Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service, on Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the funeral home, and at other times at the residence. Steven Lee Matlock

Steven Lee Matlock, 49, of 112 Chadburn Avenue, Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, January 27, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Phoenix City, AL to the late Thomas and Geraldine Henderson Matlock. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army having served in the Vietnam War and was a retired investigator with the Military Police. He was a life member of the D. A. V. and was a member of Faith Baptist Church.

Mr. Matlock is survived by his wife, Amanda Adkins Matlock of the home and two children.

John Rudolph Werderman, III

CWO3 USN RET. John Rudolph Werderman III, age 59, of 300 Spencers Ave., South Mills, NC, died Saturday, January 25, 2003 at the Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Evansville, Indiana, son of the late John Rudolph Werderman, Jr., and Irene O’Riley Werderman Ricamore of Chulavista, CA, and was the husband of Barbara Croy Werderman of the residence. Mr. Werderman was in the US Navy for over thirty years, was a CWO3, USN Ret. He was most recently a Supervisor of the Iron Shop at the US Coast Guard base in Portsmouth, VA. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was a President of Methodist Men. He was a member of the South Mills Ruritan Club, and past Governor of the Albemarle District. He taught welding at the College of the Albemarle.

Besides his wife and mother, Mr. Werderman is survived by: two daughters Barbara ‘Sissy’ and husband Randy Marrs, of South Mills, NC, and Orenia ‘Binky’ and husband George Grothe of Clayton, NC; three sons, Grady Werderman and wife Kim of Elizabeth City, NC, Chris Werderman of Clayton, NC and Jonathan Werderman of South Mills, NC; four sisters, Pat Hunt of IN., Frankie Mitchell of IN, Nancy Ferguson of KY, and Wilma Siedlarz of VT; two brothers, Bill Werderman of WA, and George Werderman of CA, and eleven grandchildren. He was predeceased by one brother Timmy Werderman and a step father Rick Ricamore.

A funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Trinity United Methodist Church in South Mills, NC by the Rev. Jim Krepps. Sue Bray Scott, 100, of 1700 West Ehringhaus Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, January 25, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC to the late James A. and Mary Jane Williams Bray and was the widow of Charlie Scott. She was a former inspector with the Elizabeth City Hosiery Mill and was a member of Berea Baptist Church.

Mrs. Scott is survived by two sons, Johnnie Warren Scott of Elizabeth City, NC and William Earl Scott of Williamston, NC; two grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren.

Audrey Lane Nixon, 81, of 148 Weight Station Road, Hertford, NC, died Thursday, January 23, 2003 at Winslow Memorial Home. She was born in Perquimans County, NC, the daughter of the late Charlie and Maude Ward Lane and was the wife of David L. ‘Roy’ Nixon of the home. She was a homemaker and a member of Woodville Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for 20 years.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Nixon is survived by two daughters, Phyllis N. Davis and husband Richard of Hertford, NC and Elaine N. Roberts and husband Harvey of Shawboro, NC; one sister, Leona Maxwell of Pensecola, FL; five grandchildren, David Sanders and wife Joanne of Hertford, NC, Duane Byrum and wife Stacey of Greenville, NC, Caroline Rossman and husband Michael of Las Vegas, NV, Julie Roberts and husband Kevin of Hertford, NC, and Jackie Casey and husband Tommy of Wilmington, NC; and four great grandchildren, Troy and Mason Sanders of Hertford, NC and Haley and Zachary Byrum of Greenville, NC. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Julia N. ‘Judy’ Sanders, and a brother, Linwood Lane.

Mrs. Elsa Eleanor Stafford Weber, age 91, of 1700 West Ehringhaus Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died January 23, 2003 at Winslow’s Memorial Nursing Home. She was born October 19, 1911 in Cambridge, Ohio to W. Edgar and Leah Addy Stafford. She was a graduate of Ohio University, a retired teacher and a member of First Families of Ohio, First Families of Guernsey County, the society of Civil War Families, AARP, the Ohio Genealogical Society, Sebring Historical Society, Union Avenue United Methodist Church in Alliance, Ohio, the United Methodist Women, and the Miller-Reid Circle.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, David G. Weber, whom she married August 25, 1939, and by two brothers; W. Roger Stafford and Donald H. Stafford. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Rachel and Wesley Gragson of Elizabeth City, NC, a son and daughter-in- law, David S. and Kristine Weber of Ambler, Pennsylvania; two sisters, Mrs. Charles (Ruth) Maple of Herscher, Illinois, and Mrs. Roy (Doris) Ervin of New Philadelphia, Ohio; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Copeland Oaks Retirement Community in Sebring, Ohio, at a later date. The family will receive friends in the Parish Hall of Christ Episcopal Church in Elizabeth City Sunday, January 26, 2003, from 3:00 to 5:00 PM and at other times at the residence of the daughter, Mr. & Mrs. Wesley Gragson, 303 West Main Street, Elizabeth City, NC. Michael Lee (Chauncey) Morgan, 45, 1026 Highway #158, Elizabeth City, NC died at his residence Saturday, January 18, 2003. He was born in Pasquotank County to the late Herbert Bruce and JoAnn Wright Morgan. Mr. Morgan was a rigger for the Tidewater Construction Company, a member of the Newland United Methodist Church and member of the New Lebanon Lodge #314 AF & AM.

He is survived by his brother, H. B. Morgan, Jr. of Elizabeth City, NC, an aunt, Frances Wright of Columbia, NC, five cousins, Connie W. Daniels, Ernie Wright III, Nancy W. Peele all of Manteo, NC, Becky W. Henry of Franklin, NC and Kelly W. Burton of Nags Head, NC. He is also survived by a very close friend, Chiquie Gregory and a host of distant relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday morning, January 23, 2003, at 11:00am in the Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, Church St., by Rev. Toni Wood and Glen Greenway. Burial will be in the Stokley Cemetery, in the Newland Section of Pasquotank County.
