Betty Goodwin Humphries, age 70, of 208 Garden Circle, Klamath Falls, OR, died Tuesday, February 25, 2003, in Oregon. Mrs. Humphries, a native of Griffin, GA, was the widow of Elda George Humphries and the daughter of the late Benjamin Harvey Goodwin, Sr., and Genevieve Hargrove Goodwin.
She is survived by a daughter and her husband, Jean and Dean Brady of Klamath Falls, OR; a son and his wife, Bill and Jennifer Humphries of Coweta, OK; a twin brother and his wife, Ben H. Goodwin, Jr., and Penny of London, England; nine grandchildren, Katy Cook, Jennifer McLaughlin, Michael McLaughlin, Courtney Humphries, Ben Humphries, Carrie Humphries, Erik Brady, Patrick Brady, and Ethan Brady; and a great grandson, Ryan Brady.
A graveside funeral service will be Sunday, March 2, 2003, at 3:00 PM in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. David Moehring officiating. The family will receive friends at 1105 West Church Street.

Betty Jean Bell, age 70 of Waterlily Rd., Coinjock, NC died Tuesday, February 25, 2003 at her residence. She was born in Pasquotank Co., NC; daughter of the late Horace Wright Bell, Sr. and the late Janie Elizabeth Whaley Bell. She retired from Dupont and was a veteran, having served in the U. S. Air Force.
Ms. Bell is survived by two brothers, Horace W. Bell, Jr. and his wife, Joyce of Maple, NC and Robert M. Bell and his wife, Dot, of LaGrange, NC. She was predeceased by a sister, Miriam Bell Ange.
A graveside service will be conducted on Saturday, March 1, 2003 at 11:00 am in Old Hollywood Cemetery with Rev. Dale Pace officiating. Nancy Jefferson Warden, age 56, of 114 Jane Lane, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, February 25, 2003, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Warden, a native of Washington, NC, was the wife of Gordon Phillip Warden of the residence and the daughter of Connie Musser Jefferson of Burlington, NC, and the late Gravely Thomas Jefferson. A graduate of NC State, she was retired from the Elizabeth City ‘ Pasquotank County Schools Central Office as the SIMS and Math Coordinator and had taught at Northeastern High School. She was the office manager for New Colonial Cabinets.
Besides her husband and mother, she is survived by a daughter, Nancy Leigh Warden of Kitty Hawk, NC; a son, Phillip Jefferson Warden of Elizabeth City, NC; two brothers, Tommy Jefferson of San Francisco, CA, and Dan Jefferson of Raleigh, NC.
A graveside funeral service will be Friday, February 28, 2003, at 1:00 PM at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel Thursday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and at other times at the residence.

Lecretia ‘Lou’ Waller Brown, age 80, of Creek Road, Elizabeth City, NC died at Winslow Memorial Nursing Home on Saturday, February 22, 2003. Born in Columbus, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late LaMonte Bradford and Mable Lake Waller. She was a Cosmetologist, and a Catholic.
Mrs. Brown is survived by: one daughter Odella Romaine, and husband Mike of Elizabeth City, NC; two sons Jim Henry Baker and wife Tereasa of Fayetteville, NC, and Owen Ray Baker of Nome Alaska; two grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

Joseph Gene Barone, 79, of 407 Lane Drive, Elizabeth City, NC died Saturday, February 22, 2003 at Sentara Norfolk General. He was born in Philadelphia, PA to the late Antonio and Jemma Cori Barone and was the widower of Alice Lucille Smith Barone. He was a retired maintenance engineer, a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, and a veteran of the United States Navy having served during World War II.
Mr. Barone is survived by a daughter, Janice Dandar and husband Regis of Elizabeth City, NC and two grandchildren, Alicia Dandar of Charlotte, NC and Justin Dandar of Elizabeth City, NC.

Patricia Ann Gillon ViaCava, age 66, of 135 West Hunter’s Trail, Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, February 17, 2003, at her residence. Mrs. ViaCava, who previously resided in Waldwick, NJ, was the wife of Louis ViaCava, and the daughter of the late William Gillon and Elisabeth Theissing Gillon. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.
Besides her husband she is survived by a daughter, Lynn Anne Borelli, and husband Joseph, of Mahwah, NJ; a son, Neal ViaCava, and wife Judy, of Morrisville, PA; a sister, Joan Cronin of Lecanto, FL; and two grand-children, Dylan and Chelsea ViaCava.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 21, 2003, at 1:00 PM at Holy Family Catholic Church by Father Jim Buchholz. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel on Thursday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and at other times at the residence.

Madeline Dunham Benton, age 82, of 120 Beech Tree Drive, Shiloh, NC, died Monday, February 17, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Warren County, TN, daughter of the late Frank Boyd and Minnie Prater Dunham and was the widow of the late Charles Wesley Benton. She was a retired public school teacher having taught in Puerto Rico, Florida, Central High School in Elizabeth City, NC, and Camden High School, and was a life time member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Juanita Chapter #1, San Juan Puerto Rico, for 50yrs., and a past worthy matron.
Mrs. Benton is survived by a son, Mike Benton and wife Joy of South Mills, NC; three granddaughters, Terra Cartwright and husband Bryan of Whiteman AFB, Missouri, Michelle Ellis and husband Tony of Travis AFB, California, and Heidi Benton of South Mills, NC; a sister-in-law, Betty Dunham of Florida and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister and a brother, Velma D. Taylor and Frank B Dunham, Jr.
A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, February 22, 2003 at 2:00 pm in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, with the Pastor Dave Combs and Mr. Brian Forehand officiating. Rites will be performed by the Order of the Eastern Star, Camden Chapter, #252 OES, following the service the family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home. Henry Garlon Cassel, CDR USCG (retired) aged 88 of S. Hughes Blvd. Elizabeth City, NC, passed away February 16, 2003
CDR. Cassel was born in Newnan, GA, and moved to Sylacauga, AL, where he lived and attended school. He was the son of late Lonnie Wales Cassel and Mary Morrow Cassel. He was the husband of Martha Ives Cassel for 59 years.
CDR. Cassel served in the United States Coast Guard as an Aircraft Pilot from 1939-1969 and logged over 10,000 hour of flying. During this time he participated in numerous Air-Sea rescues and was awarded several commendations.
He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church.
He is survived by his half brother Lonnie Wales Cassel of Alabama; two sister in laws, Carolyn Scott and husband Bill of Palm Bay, FL; Annie Horton and husband, Jack of Elizabeth City, NC; several nieces and nephews. His grandmother, Evie Pearl Cassel predeceased him.
Services will be held Wednesday, February 19, 2003 at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Chaplain Mitchell officiating. Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

America Chierici Nolker, age 85 of 147 W. Oak Knoll Dr., Nags Head, NC died Wednesday, February 12, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Pennsylvania; daughter of the late Giuseppi ‘Joe’ and Amabile Chierici and was the widow of Clarence Nolker. She was a baker for the West Deer Township School System for over 15 years.
Mrs. Nolker is survived by a son, Charles Nolker of Nags Head, NC; a step daughter, Gladys Gross of Butler, PA; six grandchildren thirteen great grandchildren.

Chappell, Sr. She was a retired manager of 7-11 Stores and was a member of West Minister Presbyterian Church in Chesapeake, VA.
Mrs. Chappell is survived by one son, Wade Chappell, and one sister, Grace Wright both of Elizabeth City, NC.
