Johnny J. Wilson, age 73, of 9 Kennedy Drive, Portsmouth, VA, died Monday, May 26, 2003, at 225 Windwood Drive, Elizabeth City, NC. He was a native of Greenville, NC, son of the late George Washington and Bertha Forest Wilson. He was the husband of Mary Dillow Wilson of the residence. Mr. Wilson was a retired truck driver for Nu-Car Carries, Inc., and a member of Cradock United Methodist Church.

Besides his wife, Mr. Wilson is survived by five sons, John M. Wilson and Robert W. ‘Bobby’ Wilson both of Chula Vista, CA, Randy Wilson of Portsmouth, VA, Chris Wilson of Chesapeake, VA, and Jay Wilson of Waterlily, NC; one half brother, Henry Heath of Robersonville, NC; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Wilson of Elizabethtown, NC; a brother-in-law, Calvin Stephen of Greenville, NC; four grandchildren, Chris and Cindy Wilson, Robert and Lyndsay Blair.

A memorial service will be Friday, May 30, 2003 at Cradock United Methodist Church at 11:00am with Pastor Daniel G. Spaugh officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives immediately following the service in the church’s social hall and at other times at their residence, 9 Kennedy Drive, Portsmouth, VA. Joe Harry Sanders, Sr., age 79, of 1604 Darian Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, May 24, 2003, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Sanders, a native of Allendale, SC, was the husband of Pauline Pippin Sanders of the residence and the son of the late Belton O’Neil Sanders and Laura Henrietta Hazel Sanders. He was a retired service manager of Goodyear and a sales representative for City Service Oil Company and a member of Campground United Methodist Church in Fayetteville, NC.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Callie Sanders Sugg and husband Jimmy of Elizabeth City, NC, Paulette Sanders Deacy and husband Bob of Holly Springs, NC; a son, Joe Harry Sanders, Jr., and wife Chris of Fayetteville, NC; five grandchildren, Amy Sugg Morgan and husband Matt, Laura Marie Sanders, Bradley O’Neil Sanders, Jessica Lawton Deacy, and Robert Martin Deacy, Jr. He was predeceased by his twin sister, Hazel Sanders Gibson, two brothers, Belton O’Neil Sanders, Jr., and Walter Hazel Sanders, Sr., and a grandson, J. R. Sugg, Jr.

A graveside service will be Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at 11:00 AM at Swallow Savanah Cemetery, Allendale, SC. The family will receive friends at Smith Rhoden Funeral Home, 215 Water Stree, Allendale, SC, from 6:30 to 8:00 PM Tuesday evening.

John B. Copley

John Bernard Copley, age 76, of 1305 Crescent Drive, Elizabeth City, NC died Friday, May 23, 2003, at Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Copley was born in West Virginia, the son of the late Albert and Kathleen Kay Stanhagen Copley and the husband of Annette Rogers Copley. He was retired from the US Postal Service; a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose where he had served as Past President for the state of NC 1978 ’79 and past Govenor of the local Elizabeth City lodge # 1847. He earned his Pilgrim Degree in 1981. Mr Copley was also a member of the NC Beach Buggy Association the Elizabeth City Surf Fishing Club and Pine Lakes Country Club. He was a volunteer for many organizations, Muscular Distrophy where he was once the Regional Director, Albemarle Acadamy Football Coach from 1969 ‘ 1973, Elizabeth City Volunteer Fire Dept. The American Red Cross and the EC Boys club.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Janne Copley Mills and husband Scott of Elizabeth City, NC; one son, David Kenneth Copley and wife Linda of Elizabeth City, NC; one brother, Raymond Kenneth Copley of New Bern, NC; two grandchildren John Michael Mills, Thomas Scott Mills, one great grandchild Dustin Scott Mills

A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at 10:00 AM at Christ Episcopal Church with the Rev. Jim McGee officiating. A private burial will follow in Gates County. The family will be at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to ones Favorite charity

Sylvia Jones Witt, age 64, of 121 Ferry Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Sunday, May 25, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC, daughter of Pearl J. Jones and the late Willard Jones and the wife of Donald W. Witt of the residence. She was a member of Berea Baptist Church and worked as a secretary for J. W. Jones Lumber Company.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Witt is survived by a daughter, Tina Mihaloew; a son, Eddie Natoli; two step daughters, Kim Witt and Stephanie Lawson; a sister, Angela Simpson; a brother, Marion Jones; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, May 28, 2003 at 2:00 PM in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Glenn Greenway officiating. Virginia Newbern Willingham, 94, of Elizabeth City, NC died Thursday morning, May 22, 2003, in the John Randolph Nursing Home, Hopewell, Virginia. She was born in Bertie County, NC to the late Alfred E. and Maggie Baker Newbern and was the widow of the late Preston Willingham. Mrs. Willingham was a retired clerk, a member of the Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church and EC Senior Citizen Club.

She is survived by two sons, John F. Williams of Duluth, GA and T. C. ‘Jack’ Williams of Dewitt, VA. ; three sister-in-laws, Alethia Newbern of Elizabeth City, NC, Josephine Newbern of Ahoskie, NC and Theresa Dail of Hertford, NC.

Virginia B. Davis, age 82 of Warden St., Elizabeth City, NC died Thursday, May 22, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC; daughter of the late Charlie Q. and Maybelle Hudson Baker. She retired from the Elizabeth City Hosiery Mill and was a member of First Christian Church.

Mrs. Davis is survived by a daughter, Margaret D. Roughton and her husband, Terry, of Hertford, NC; four sisters, a brother, three grandchildren; Terry Roughton, Jr. and his wife, Gloria, Kenneth Roughton, and Kelly Roughton and his wife, Yvonne; four great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

Berenice Dozier Dodge, age 99, 1608 Parkview Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, May 21, 2003 at Winslow Memorial Home. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC, daughter of the late Willoughby and Elizabeth Coppersmith Dozier and the widow of George G. Dodge. She was a retired legal secretary and a former court recorder for the 1st judgicial district.

Mrs. Dodge is survived by three sisters, Gladys D. Haavik and Lillian D. Collins, both of Elizabeth City, NC and Eula D. Engelke of Southern Shores, NC.

James Horace Douglas, Sr., age 77 of 118 Brickhouse Lane Lot 16, Elizabeth City, NC died Wednesday, May 21, 2003 at his residence. He was born in Hyde County, NC; son of the late Samuel Shelby and Sarah Elizabeth Harris Douglas and was the widower of Lucille Sawyer Douglas. He was a retired mechanic.

Mr. Douglas is survived by two daughters, Shirley Barnett of Valdese, NC and Lynn Barber of Elizabeth City, NC; five sons, Charlie Douglas, Danny Douglas, and Randy Douglas, all of Elizabeth City, NC, Horace Douglas, Jr. of Currituck, NC and Ricky Douglas of Camden, NC; three sisters, Elizabeth Gibbs of Englehard, NC, Mary Alice Bland of Robertsonville, NC and Virginia Nobles of Manteo, NC; a brother, Harry Douglas of Elizabeth City, NC; nineteen grandchildren, and thirteen great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a grandson and a great grandson.

Mr. Jeffries is survived by two brothers, Mark Alan Jeffries and his wife Arlene, Tracy Randall Jeffries and his wife Laurie both of Elizabeth City, NC; two nieces, Ashton and Victoria Jeffries; two nephews, Jared and Christopher Jeffries, all of Elizabeth City, NC.

Jeffrey Alan Langwell, age 45, of 103 Pine Street, Camden, NC, died Monday, May 19, 2003, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Langwell, a native of San Antonio, TX, was the husband of Vickie Barber Langwell of the residence and the son of the late August Langwell, III, and Joanna Gravitt Langwell Yeager of College Station, TX. He was an automobile salesman, a US Navy veteran, and a Catholic.

Besides his wife and mother he is survived by a daughter, Lauren Langwell of the residence; a son, Paul Langwell of the residence; a sister, Paula Schultu of Huston, TX; a brother, Mark Langwell of College Station, TX; and stepmother, Jo Langwell of Garland, TX.

A funeral service will be Friday, May 23, 2003, at 2:30 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Glenn Greenway and the Rev. Tom Lagrane officiating. Military honors will be rendered by the William Clarence Jackson VFW Post 6060 and burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home at 1:00 PM Friday and immediately after the service in the lobby. At other times they will be at the residence.
