SIDNEY MAE GASKINS GARRISH, 82, of Ocracoke, NC died Friday, June 27, 2003 in an Elizabeth City hospital. Mrs. Garrish, a native of Ocracoke, was a homemaker and a member of the Ocracoke Assembly of God. She was the daughter of the late Cleveland and Betty O’Neal Gaskins. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Thurman Styron and second husband, Leslie Garrish.

Mrs. Garrish is survived by a daughter, Betsy Outlaw of Belhaven, NC.

Funeral services will be held at the Ocracoke Assembly of God on Sunday, June 29, 2003 at 3:00 pm with Rev. John White officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:30 pm prior to the service. There will be a reception in the church fellowship hall following the service. Burial will be in the Ocracoke Community Cemetery.

Louise Weeks Burnham

Louise Weeks Burnham, 95, 278 Horseshoe Road, South Mills, NC died Friday, June 26, 2003, in the Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC to the late Paul B. Weeks, Sr. and Eunice Williams Weeks and was the widow of the late Isaac Almond Burnham. Mrs. Burnham was a retired seamstress with Supak, a member and former clerk for Ebenezer Baptist Church and a member and past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, South Mills Chapter #270.

She is survived by a daughter, Myra Gregory and husband, Joe H., of Brandon, FL; a son, Franklin Burnham and wife, Karen, of South Mills, NC; five sisters, Eunice Banks of Ahoskie, NC, Dora Craddock of Virginia Beach, VA, Ida Kitchen of Yale, VA, Irene Woolston of Southerland, IA, and Johnny Stallings of Elizabeth City; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Herbert Weeks, Job Weeks, Paul B. Weeks, Jr., William Roy Weeks, and Charlie W. Weeks. Also, Mrs. Burnham was preceded in death by a grandson, Chris Burnham.

Graveside services will be conducted Saturday, June 28, 2003, at 2:00pm in the South Mills Cemetery by Rev. Frank Thigpen. Effie Harris Creekmore, age 101, of 258 East 158, Camden, NC, died Friday, June 27, 2003 in Winslow Memorial Nursing Home. She was a native of Pasquotank County, NC, and a resident of Camden County for over 95 years. She was the daughter of the late Sophia Sawyer Harris and Richard Harris, and the widow of Bruce G. Creekmore. Mr. and Mrs. Creekmore operated The County Store in Belcross for over 50 years. She was a member of Sawyer’s Creek Baptist Church and Fidelis Sunday School Class.

Survivors include a daughter, Pauline Creekmore of Camden, NC, several nieces and nephews.

Graveside service will be Monday, June 30, 2003 at 11:00 AM in Old Hollywood Cemetery with the Rev. Tom LeGrand officiating. Stan E. Taylor, age 78, of 109 Sunny Lane, Grandy, NC, died Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at his residence. Mr. Taylor, a native of London, England, was the husband of Dorothy Joan Walker Taylor of the residence and the son of the late Walter Taylor and Anne Brown Taylor. He was a British Army Veteran of WW II, a retired Corporate Executive and an Episcopal.

Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter, Sue Ward of Mission Viejo, CA; two sons, David Taylor of West Palm Beach, FL, and Peter Taylor of Jarvisburg, NC; two sisters, Ros Warland of Banbury, England, and Connie Dieser of Rochester, MN; three grand children and his loving Foster family of the Spencers and Francis, where he was raised in Feltwell, England.

A funeral service will be conducted on Monday, June 30, 2003 at 2:00 PM in the Powells Point Christian Church, Harbinger with Walter Gallop officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall of the church and at other times at the residence. Mary Temple Reid, 82, of 465 Gumbridge Road, Elizabeth City, NC died Tuesday, June 24, 2003, in the Guardian Care Nursing Home. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC to the late Johnnie E. and Beulah Forbes Temple and was the widow of the late George Alonzo Reid. Mrs. Reid was a former employee with the J. C. Penny Co. and Belks as a salesperson, a member of the Newbegun United Methodist Church, U. M W., the Weeksville Lion Club Auxiliary and the Marcia Albertson Club.

She is survived by two daughters, Scarlett Newbern and husband, Will, of Elizabeth City, NC and Mary Bessie Ward of Gulfport, MS; one son, George Alonzo Reid, Jr. and wife, Sharon, of Phoenix, AZ.; a sister, Pallie Mae Harris of Elizabeth City, NC; seven grandchildren, Sonja Hodges, Clay Hodges, Scott Newbern, Dwayne Ward, Patrick Reid, George Reid 111, and Denise Thomas, and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Darwin Temple, Tommie F. Temple, Bailey Temple and Owen Burnham.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, June 27, 2003, at 2:00pm in the Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City by Rev. Toni Wood. Burial will be in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Lillian Owens Forbes, age 90, at 206 Waterlily Road, Coinjock, NC, died Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Forbes, a native of Currituck County, was the widow of Charles Harold Forbes and the daughter of the late Alexander Owens and Grace Walker Owens. She was a retired LPN from the Albemarle Hospital and a member of Powell’s Point Baptist Church.

Mrs. Forbes is survived by three daughters, Mary Sue Floyd of Winnabow, NC, Carole F., and husband Bill Lewallen of Powell’s Point, NC, and Phyllis Forbes of Richmond, VA; four grandchildren; Glenn Floyd and wife Beth, Christopher David and wife Tawnee, Susan Floyd, and Will Lawallen, and two great grandchildren, Matt David and Hallie Floyd. She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Hal Floyd.

Timmy LeRoy Nelson, Jr., age 36, of 101 Magnolia Drive, Wedgewood Lakes, Moyock, NC, died Sunday, June 22, 2003, at his residence. Mr. Nelson, a native of Norfolk, VA, was the husband of Lorenda Armstrong Nelson of the residence and the son of Timmy LeRoy Nelson, Sr., and Addie Louise Hanna Nelson of Maple, NC. He was a member of Rehoboth Baptist Church.

Besides his wife and parents he is survived by a daughter, Candie Marie Nelson of the residence; a son, Matthew Lee Nelson of the residence; a sister, Paula Louise Nelson Brinkley of Grover, NC; and a brother, Richard Lionel Nelson of Norton, VA.

Funeral services will be Thursday, June 26, 2003, at 11:00 AM at Rehoboth Baptist Church with the Rev. Dale Pace officiating. Burial will follow in Laurel Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and at other times at the residence of his parents, 329 Maple Road, Maple, NC.

Robert Davis Aldridge, age 69, of 2133 Rivershore Rd., Elizabeth City, NC died Monday, June 23, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Burlington, NC; son of the late William Henry and Virginia Davis Aldridge and was the husband of Patricia Aydlett Aldridge of the residence. He was member of Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church, where he served as former Chairman of the Board of Deacons. He was former owner of Midgett and Mutual Insurance Agencies; former Chairman of Trustees at Albemarle Hospital, former member of the Board of Trustees of C. O. A., former Chairman of the Board of the Elizabeth City Girls Club, former President of the Elizabeth City Jaycees, and a member of the Rotary Club of Elizabeth City.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Robin Aldridge Harris and husband, Steve, of Elizabeth City, NC; a son, Jeffrey Aydlett Aldridge, and wife, Sharon, of Kill Devil Hills, NC; and three grandchildren, Bobby Harris, Nathaniel Harris, and Case Aldridge. He was predeceased by a brother, William Henry Aldridge, Jr.

Jack Darrell McIe, Sr., age 64 of 125 Kings Way, Moyock, NC, died Saturday, June 21, 2003 at his residence. A native of Morgantown, WV, he was the husband of Charlene Garrett McIe of the Residence and the son of the late Charles Everett McIe and Lela Emma Demastus McIe. He was a retired aviation boatswain mate from the US Navy and a member of the Fleet Reserve Association.

Besides his wife he is survived by three daughters, Elisabeth Thornton of Bethlehem, PA, Sabrina McIe-Cooper of Virginia Beach, VA, and Kristine McIe of Norfolk, VA; one son, Jack McIe, Jr., of Austin, TX; three brothers, James Dolan McIe of Rockville, MD, William Franklin McIe of Corpus Christi, TX, and Paul Everette McIe of TN; and four grand children.

William Dwight Johnson, 90, of 7875 Caratoke Highway, Powells Point, NC died Friday, June 20, 2003, in the Britthaven Nursing Home, Nags Head, NC. Mr. Johnson was born in Harnett County, NC to the late Junius and Ada Pollard Johnson and was the widower of the late Della Kathryn Rhodes Johnson. He was a retired production manager for the Kelford Coca Cola Bottling Company and a member of the Powells Point Baptist Church.

He is survived by one daughter, Sylvia Sparks and husband, Jim, of Powells Point, NC, three grandsons, Jim Sparks and wife, Gincie, of Greensboro, NC, Brad Sparks and Daniel Sparks both of Powells Point, NC and a great granddaughter, Parker Sparks of Greensboro, NC.

A graveside service will be conducted Monday, June 23, 2003, at 3:00pm in the Powells Point Baptist Church Cemetery by Rev. Herbert Hemingway.
