Manteo

Carroll Waverly Berry, 76, died Monday, September 29, 2003 at a Nags Head nursing facility. Mr. Berry was born in Engelhard, NC and worked at Kellogg Supply for many years and retired from Manteo Marine as a mechanic on Out Board motors. He was a member of the Roanoke Acres Church of Christ and Manteo Masonic Lodge #521 AF & AM. Mr. Berry was the son of the late Cecil Lee and Mabel Watson Berry.

He is survived by one sister, Linda B. Pentecost of Wanchese; three brothers, Stafford A. Berry and wife Jean, Jimmy Berry and wife Rita both of Manteo and Russell Berry of Manns Harbor. He was preceded in death by two sisters Nancy Ann Berry and Gladys Wilson and one brother, Ellis Ray Berry.

A Celebration of life will be held at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo, on Friday, October 3, 2003 at 1:00 PM with Rev. Ronnie Midgett and Rev. Les Wilkerson officiating. A graveside service will be held following the funeral at Fulford Cemetery in Engelhard at 3:30 PM with Steve Bryan officiating. The family will be receiving friends at Twiford’s Colony Chapel on Thursday, October 2nd from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 930 B. Wellness Drive, Greenville, NC 27834.

Bertrand C. Jennette

Bertrand Culpepper Jennette, age 83, of 1107 W. Williams Circle, Elizabeth City, NC died Friday, September 26, 2003 at Guardian Care Nursing Home. He was born in Pasquotank Co., NC; son of the late Warren H. and Margaret Culpepper Jennette and was the widower of Geraldine Jackson Jennette and Lois Pippen Jennette, respectively. He was the owner of Jennette’s Produce and a veteran, having served in the U. S. Navy.

Mr. Jennette is survived by two sons, B. Culpepper Jennette, Jr. and wife, April of Shawboro, NC and Carter J. Jennette of Currituck, NC; and three grandchildren, Hannah Jennette, Sarah Jane Jennette, and Michael Worsham.

A graveside service will be conducted on Monday, September 29, 2003 at 2:00 PM in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Clyde Denny officiating. Military honors will be presented by the William Clarence Jackson Post # 6060 of the V. F. W. Memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 401, Elizabeth City, NC 27907 or one’s favorite charity. The family will be at the residence.

Doris Downs

Doris Edith Rasmussen Downs, age 75, of 157 Olivet Circle, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, September 24, 2003, at her residence. She was born in Brooklyn, NY, daughter of the late Malvin Rasin and Alma Anderson Rasmussen, and wife of the late Kenneth Winfred Downs. Mrs. Downs worked as a Physician’s Assistant and a X-Ray Technician. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.

She is survived by three sons, Harry Randolph Hansen of Chesapeake, VA, Malvin Alan Hansen of Hertford, NC, and Jeffrey Martin Hansen of Elizabeth City, NC; one brother Charles Rasmussen of Largo, FL; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

A private memorial service will be conducted at a later date.

Jacqueline Rogers Collier

Jacqueline ‘Jackie’ Rogers Collier, age 71, of 1381 Waterlily Road, Coinjock, NC, died Friday, September 26, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Portsmouth, VA, daughter of the late Henry Wiehrs and Elsie Grubbs Rogers, and was the widow of Leslie Warren Collier, III. She was a independent real estate agent and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Coinjock Chapter #218 OES.

Mrs. Collier is survived by two sons, Leslie Warren Collier, IV, and wife Susan of Roswell, GA, and Wiehrs Lewis Collier, and wife Cydney of Narragansett, RI; a sister, Janet Rogers of Waterlily, NC; and four granddaughters, Zara, Virginia, Hannah, and Leigh Ann Collier.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, September 30, 2003 at 2:00 pm in Hampton Cemetery in Waterlily, NC, with Mr. Wayne Twiford officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 and at other times at the residence. Seldon Toler Bundy

Seldon Georganna Melvina Toler Bundy, age 83, died Sunday, September 28, 2003 at Britthaven Outer Banks. Mrs. Bundy was a native of Pasquotank County and lived for many years in Point Harbor, NC. She was the widow of Darwin T. Bundy and the daughter of the late Noah M. and Minnie Reaves Toler. She was a lifelong member of Pearl Street Pentecostal Church in Elizabeth City, where over the years she served as Sunday School Teacher, Youth Director, and Choir Member. A talented vocalist, Seldon performed for years with the Toler Trio, singing at live programs on the local radio, area churches, and for weddings and funerals. She worked for the Currituck County School System for many years and was an airplane spotter in the Civil Air Patrol during WW II.

She is survived by three daughters, Darsel and James Keiller of Ellenwood, GA, Shelah and George Portoukalian of Franklin, NC, and Lori and Robert London, Jr. of Point Harbor, NC and Kill Devil Hills, NC; one sister, Marion Crank of Norfolk, VA; one brother, James C. and Betty Toler of Ft. Payne, AL; one sister-in-law, Margaret Toler of Elizabeth City, NC; eleven grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Wanda Fern Lewis.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, September 30, 2003 at 11:00 AM in Pearl Street Pentecostal Church with Rev. Steve Strickland and Janice Boyce officiating. Burial will be in Old Hollywood Cemetery. Lorna Hull McPherson

Lorna Hull McPherson, 87, of 1408 Brothers Drive, Elizabeth City, NC died Friday, September 26, 2003. She was born in Whitney, Idaho on March 10, 1916, to the late Alvin C. and Ella Maughan Hull. Mrs. McPherson attended Utah State University where she majored in home economics and later fulfilled a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints to the Eastern States Mission. There she met her late husband of 49 years, Arthur Alvin McPherson, and together they were instrumental in establishing and promoting the growth of the first ward in North Carolina for the Mormon Church. She was actively involved in the auxiliaries of the church and was president of the Relief Society Women’s Organization on a ward and regional level for thirty seven years. She and her husband served an eight year mission in the Washington, D.C. Mormon Temple. She took great pride in her Mormon pioneer heritage, which led to her involvement in genealogy, church history, and becoming a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers. She was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker.

Mrs. McPherson is survived by four daughters, Lorna Gayle Cannon and husband Tom, Maryella McPherson, and Linda Alison McPherson, all of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Geraldine M. Weeks and husband, Frank, of Elizabeth City, NC; three sons, Arthur Alvin McPherson, Jr., and wife Peggy, Robert Weston McPherson and wife Sandra, all of Elizabeth City, NC, and Oliver Lee McPherson and wife Nancy, of Salt Lake City, Utah; one sister, Ella H. Farnsworth of Phoenix, Arizona; two brothers, Harold Maughan Hull of Preston, Idaho and Russell Maughan Hull of Elizabeth City, NC; 25 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Alvin C. Hull, Dean Maughan Hull, Keith Maughan Hull and Robert McCellan Hull, and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, September 29, 2003 at 11:00 AM in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints under the direction of Bishop David Pritchard. Jesse T. Gordon, 75, died Thursday, September 25, 2003 at a Nags Head medical facility. Mr. Gordon was born in Petersburg, Va. and was a salesman for Heileg Myers Furniture Company. He was a lifelong resident of Colonial Heights, Va. and was a member of the Oakland Baptist Church in Disputanta, Va., the American Legion Post 284 in Colonial Heights and the VFW Post 622 in Petersburg, Va. He was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Gordon was the son of the late Jesse T. Gordon, Sr. and the late Nannie Wilkins Gordon and was the husband of Mildred Wells Gordon of the home.

Besides his wife, Mr. Gordon is survived by one daughter, Wanda G. Davis and husband Jimmy of Disputanta, Va.; one son, Jerry D. Herke and wife Sharon of Millsap, TX; four grandchildren, Jay Davis and wife Erin, Mark, Daniel and Brian Herke; four great-grandchildren, Anna and Clay Davis and Trenton and Joshua Herke; a devoted cousin, Jacqueline S. Hudson of Colonial Heights. Mr.Gordon was preceded in death by one sister, Mildred L. Gordon.

A memorial service will be held at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo on Saturday, September 27, 2003 at 7:00 PM with Rev. Bob Pitsch officiating. There will also be a memorial service at Oakland Baptist Church on Monday, September 29, 2003 at 3:00 PM with Rev. Robert Livesay officiating. Margaret Estelle Gibbs Gard, 90, died Friday, September 26, 2003 at her residence. She was born on March 21, 1913 to Herman and Bertha Tillett Gibbs. She was the wife of the late Alton E. Gard, Sr.

Bess G. Hunnings of Durham; one brother, Robert Gibbs of Derry, NH; twenty three grandchildren, thirty three great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

Crystal Leigh Baum, age 22, of 598 Creek Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, September 24, 2003, in the Albemarle Hospital. Miss Baum was a native of Pasquotank County and the daughter of Hezekiah Jerome Baum and Nellie Mae Lambert Baum of the residence. She was a student at COA and a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness.

Besides her parents she is survived by a half brother, Hezekiah James Baum of Travis City, MI; a maternal grandmother, Mable Lambert of Elizabeth City, NC; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2003 at 3:00 PM in the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness. Opal Evalee Hayes Moser, age 82, of 2746 Barclay Avenue, Portsmouth, VA, died Thursday, September 25, 2003 in Maryview Medical Center Hospital, Portsmouth, VA. She was born in Pikeville, TN, the daughter of the late Charles Edward and Lura Caroline Rodgers Hayes, and was the widow of James Silas Moser. She was a member of White’s Creek Baptist Church in TN.

Mrs. Moser is survived by one daughter, Margaret Ann Skittelthrope of Elizabeth City, NC; five sons, Ronald J. ‘Bobby’ Moser, David Moser, and Johnny Lee Moser, all of Elizabeth City, NC, Larry Dale Moser of Portsmouth, VA, and Robert Lee Moser of Chesapeake, VA; ten grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Charles Edward Moser.
