John Wynne Norfleet, age 59, of 1172 Toxey Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday, October 30, 2003, at his residence. Mr. Norfleet, a native of Newport News, VA, was the husband of Elsie Toxey Norfleet of the residence and the son of the late Cyril B. Norfleet and Hazel Wynne Norfleet. He was a retired planner and estimator for the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, a Baptist, and a Boy Scout Leader.
Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter, Dawn Smithson, and husband Anthony, of Elizabeth City, NC; a son, William Lloyd Norfleet of Elizabeth City; a sister, Lora Faye Holmes of Elizabeth City, NC; and three grandchildren, Sarah Smithson, Jordynn Anders and Shay Anders. He was predeceased by a brother, Norman Norfleet.
Funeral service will be Saturday, November 1, 2003, at 3:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with David King officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. SANDRA CATHERINE WILSON, 56, died on Wednesday, October 29, 2003 at her residence. Ms. Wilson was born in Tarboro, NC and was a Registered Nurse for Edgecomb County Hospital and later worked for the NCDOT and was a certified EMT. She was the daughter of the late William Wilson and Mrs. Mary Grimmer Wilson of Tarboro.
Besides her mother, she is survived by one son, Warren Langley, Jr. of West Palm Beach, FL, and of Manteo; one sister, Joyce Wilson of Maryland; one brother, Jerry Wilson of Tarboro, four grandchildren and significant other, William H. ‘Buster’ Braddy of Manteo.
A Service of Remembrance will be held on Saturday, November 1st at 6:00 PM at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo. Memorial Donations may be made to the Dare County Hospice, P.O. Box 1000, Manteo, NC 27954.

Robert Reuben Mawson, age 75, of 1210 Crescent Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, October 28, 2003, at Guardian Care Nursing Home. Mr. Mawson, a native of Philadelphia, PA, was the husband of Vera Linnae Anderson Mawson of the residence and the son of the late Norman T. Mawson and Doris Mack Mawson. He was a retired electronic engineer, a WW II Veteran of the U.S. Navy V12 Air Cadet, a member of Christ Episcopal Church, a U.S.C.G Auxiliary volunteer for ten years, and a former member of the Association of Old Crows.
Besides his wife he is survived by a son, Thomas Carl Mawson of Herndon, VA; four sisters, Faith Hoffman and Carol Joersz both of Bremerton, WA, Nancy Keddy of Grand Junction, CO, and Lynette Baughman of Sequim, WA; and two grandchildren, Jennifer Michelle Mawson McClelland and Thomas David Mawson.
A memorial service will be at Christ Episcopal Church, Saturday, November 1, 2003 at 10:00 AM with the Rev. Fredricka Steenstra officiating. Vera Swain Baker, age 79, of 111 Cartwright Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, October 28, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Columbia, NC, daughter of the late Charles L. Swain and Dora Voliva Swain and was wife of Wesley Thomas Baker of the residence. She was a member of Sandy Acres Freewill Baptist Church in Columbia, NC.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Baker is survived by a son, Michael C. Baker and wife Georgia of Elizabeth City, NC; two sisters, Esther Rhodes of Columbia, NC, and Katie Reynolds of Jamesville, NC; and two grandsons, Steven and Johnathan Baker. Mrs. Baker was preceded in death by three brothers, Grady, Joseph, and David Swain.
A funeral service will be held Friday, October 31, 2003 at 11:00 AM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Phil Smith officiating. Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery. Joseph B. Anderson, age 77, of Elizabeth City, NC, died Sunday, October 26, 2003 at his residence. He was born in Elizabeth City, NC, son of the late Joseph Whayland and Eva Winslow Anderson and was the husband of Hazel Harris Anderson of the residence. He was a retired police officer for the Elizabeth City Police Department, member of First Christian Church, and Eureka Lodge # 317 AF &AM.
Besides his wife, Mr. Anderson is survived by a daughter, Jo Ann Anderson Crawford and husband Ray of Richmond, VA; two sons, Benjamin Whayland Anderson and wife Dottie of Elizabeth City, NC, and Michael Gene Anderson and wife Pam of Greenville, NC; two sisters, Myrtle Anderson Crain and Geneva Anderson both of Elizabeth City, NC; and three grandchildren, John Rodney Anderson, Benjamin Seth Anderson, and Kristin Nicole Smith. Mr. Anderson was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Anderson Brickhouse.

Delbert Dalton Harrison, 71, of 144 Texas Road, Shiloh, NC died Sunday, October 26, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Camden County, NC to the late Roger Forbes and Hilda Harrison Sawyer and was the husband of Patsy Mae Byrd Harrison of the residence. Mr. Harrison was a retired aircraft maintenance technician with the U. S. Air Force, a former member of the Camden County Board of Adjustors, and a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.
Besides his wife, Mr. Harrison is survived by two daughters, Eva Jane Green of Sunbury, NC and Anita Harrison Mason of Shiloh, NC; two sons, William Addison Harrison of New Jersey and Willis Dalton Harrison of Shiloh, NC; three sisters, Bertha Jane Gallop of Rocky Mount, NC, Barbara Ann Sawyer of Woodville, NC, and Nellie Ray Chapman of Shiloh, NC; seventeen grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, October 30, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Riddle Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Roland Cooper. Rebecca Marie Vandevender Chaplin, age 54, of 108 Wedgewood Drive, Moyock, NC, died Friday, October 24, 2003, at her residence. Mrs. Chaplin, a native of Circleville, WV, was the wife of Kenneth Richard Chaplin, Sr., of the residence and the daughter of the late Adam Henry Vandevender and Bessie Marie Vandevender Vandevender. She was a homemaker and a Southern Baptist.
Besides her husband she is survived by two daughters, Bessie Zurface of Moyock, NC, and Alice Barefoot of Kill Devil Hills, NC; two sons, Kenneth Chaplin, Jr., of Richmond, VA, and Eric Chaplin of Moyock, NC; two sisters, Patricia Griffin of Newport, RI, and Kathy Eastman of Jacksonville, FL; two brothers, Fred Vandevender of Newport, RI, and Jun Vandevender of PA; and seven grandchildren.

June Betsy Wilson Joseph, age 82, of 163 Dozier Road, Moyock, NC, died Thursday, October 23, 2003, at Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Joseph, a native of Luzerne, PA, was the widow of John Thomas Joseph and the daughter of the late Robert Wilson and Faith Hopkins Wilson. She was a retired preschool teacher.
Mrs. Joseph is survived by a son, Robert Joseph of Moyock, NC; four grandchildren, Christopher Joseph, Jason Joseph, Brandon Vernon, and Cassandra Vernon; four great grandchildren, Mitchell Joseph, Spencer Joseph, Alex Joseph, and Katelyn Joseph.

Marjorie Hufton Ainsley, age 80, of 1604 Edgewood Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, October 25, 2003, at Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Ainsley, a native of Tyrrell County, was the widow of Ronald Ainsley and the daughter of the late James Andrew Hufton and Lona Morris Hufton. She was a retired meter reader for Elizabeth City, a member of Calvary Baptist Church, the VFW Women’s Auxiliary, and the Moose Lodge Women’s Auxiliary.
She is survived by a daughter, Teresa Morgan and husband Wayne of Elizabeth City, NC; two sons, Tommy Ranhorn and wife Rhonda of Camden, NC, and Wayne Trimmer and wife Sue of Elizabeth City, NC; two sisters, Zuma Atkinson of IL and Mary Elmer Hills of FL; one brother, Jimmy Hufton of Elizabeth City, NC; eight grand children; thirteen great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and a special friend, Robert Russell. She was predeceased by a sister, Beulah Tillett and a brother, Morris Hufton.

Mrs. Sharman is survived by two sons, Steven Sharman of Grandy, NC and Michael Sharman of Davenport, FL; a granddaughter, Lisa Baxter of Atlanta, GA; and a niece, Barbara Dennis of Lamar, MO.
