Captain Thomas Hill Mebane, Jr., 78, of 349 Mother Vineyard Road, Manteo, NC, died Thursday, January 29, 2004 at his residence. He was born in Decatur, GA, son of the late Thomas Hill and Anna Belle Wingo Mebane. He retired in 1985 as a Ship Master, captaining super tankers for the Merchant Marine Service and last sailed as Master of the newly launched Chemical Pioneer that sailed out of Newport News, VA. Mr. Mebane was an active member of St. Andrews By-The-Sea Episcopal Church, Nags Head where he had served as a vestry member, a junior warden, sang bass in the choir, and was a member of The Brotherhood of St. Andrew; and served in many capacities including president of the Manteo Lion’s Club.

Mr. Mebane is survived by his wife of fifty years, Connie Godbout Mebane of the residence; three daughters, Susan T. Carter of Centerville, VA, Dr. Dorothy J. Mebane of Chapel Hill, NC, and Diane L. Mebane of Belmar, NJ; two sons, Richard Hill Mebane of Great Falls, VA and Thomas Hill Wallace of Atlanta, GA; one sister, Dorothy Hales of Temple, GA; one brother, William Wingo Mebane of Dayton, MD; and ten grandchildren.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date. The family will be at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Andrews By-The-Sea Episcopal Church Memorial Garden Fund, P.O. Box 445, Nags Head, NC 27959. Elizabeth Brantley Hobbs

Mrs. Elizabeth Brantley Hobbs, age 82, of 901 Halstead Boulevard, Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday, January 29, 2004, at Guardian Care Nursing Home. Mrs. Hobbs, a native of Suffolk, VA, was the widow of Ephraim J. Hobbs, Jr., and the daughter of the late Joseph F. Brantley and Ida Jones Brantley. She was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, and was a past president of the American Legion Auxillary.

She is survived by four sons, John C. Hobbs of Virginia Beach, VA, Ephraim J. Hobbs, III and wife Dianne, of Asheville, NC, Stephen B. Hobbs and wife Julie of Laurens, SC, and Joseph F. Hobbs and wife Cynthia of Moyock, NC; and five grandchildren, Adam Hobbs, Claire Hobbs, Josh Black, Kimberly Hobbs, and Lora Hobbs.

Funeral services will be Sunday, February 1, 2004 at 2:00 pm in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Revs. John H. Dutton, Jr. and M.R. White. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Jean Brown Garrett, 83, of 527 Meadstown Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, January 28, 2004, in the Winslow Memorial Home. She was born in McMinn County, TN to the late Henry K. and Georgie Zimmerman Brown and was the widow of the late Vincent Cecil Garrett, Sr. She was retired from IXL Furniture and attended the Eureka Methodist Church.

Mrs. Garrett is survived by two daughters, Wanda Odell Cain of Cumming, GA. and Frankie Vaughan Lee of Jacksonville, FL.; two sons, Vincent Cecil Garrett, Jr. of Elizabeth City and Thomas D. Garrett of Houston, TX; two brothers, James P. Brown and Bobby Brown both of Englewood, TN; five grandchildren, six great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Henry Brown Vaughan.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at 2:00pm in the Twiford Memorial Chapel by Rev. B. R. Lewis. Burial will follow in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. William Samuel Hauser

William Samuel Hauser, 76, died at an Outer Banks medical facility on Saturday, January 24, 2004. Mr. Hauser was born in Barbourville, KY, lived on the Outer Banks since 1978 and was a retired Investigator with the F.B.I. He was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Hauser was the son of the late Gustav Adolf Hauser and the late Mary Herzig Hauser and the husband of the late Virginia Woodson Hauser.

Mr. Hauser is survived by four sons, Bill Hauser of Ashburn, VA, Gus Hauser of Chattanooga, TN, Lewis Hauser of Springfield, VA and Clay Hauser of Kitty Hawk; two sisters, Louise Dizney of Jacksonville, NC and Betty Sanslow of Knoxville, TN and eight grandchildren.

A Service of Remembrance will be held on Wednesday, January 28, 2004 at 10:00 AM at the All Saints Episcopal Church with Rev. Thomas E. Wilson officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 930 B Wellness Drive, Greenville, NC 27834.

Dempsey Burnette ‘DB’ Forbes, Sr., age 65, of 244 One Mill Road, Shiloh, NC, died Tuesday, January 27, 2004, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Forbes, a native of Camden County, was the husband of Betty Riggs Forbes of the residence and the son of Ruth Pierce Forbes of Shiloh, NC, and the late Dempsey Forbes. He was a retired electrician at the EC Coast Guard Base, a member and past master of Hall Lodge #53 AF&AM, Indian Ridge Chapter #319 OES, the Elizabeth City York Rite Bodies, the Elizabeth City Shrine Club, the Sudan Shriners, and a member of I.B.E.W. Local Union # 733. He was a U. S. Air Force veteran.

Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by a daughter, Nena Williams of Gloucester, VA; a son, Dempsey Burnette Forbes, Jr., of Shiloh, NC; two sisters, Jeannette Riggs and Geraldine Overton, both of Shiloh, NC; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Friday, January 30, 2004, at 11:00am at Twiford Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery with Masonic Rites accorded by Hall Lodge #53 AF & AM. Mrs. Ella Elizabeth Smith Greico, age 86, of 3907 Caratoke Highway, Currituck, NC, died Tuesday, January 27, 2004, at Chesapeake General Hospital. Mrs. Greico, a native of Weeskville and formerly a resident of Shiloh, was the widow of Johnnie Anthony ‘Lon Chaney’ Greico, Sr., and was the daughter of the late Kenneth Smith and Mary Sanders Smith. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church and was a housekeeper.

She is survived by two daughters, Doris Ferrell of Elizabeth City, NC, and Mary Greico Sanderlin of Shiloh, NC; two sons, Johnnie Anthony Greico, Jr., and Harold Augusta Greico both of Elizabeth City, NC; six grand children; and eight great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Thursday, January 29, 2004 at 2:00 PM at Shiloh Baptist Church with the Rev. David Combs officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Diane Midgett, age 60, of 8341 A, Caratoke Highway, Powells Point, NC, died January 26, 2004 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC, daughter of the late Ezekiel M. Midgett and Lucy Sawyer Midgett.

Mrs. Midgett is survived by a daughter, Stacie Davis of Point Harbor, NC; three sons, Vernon Twiford of Powells Point, NC, Jeff Davis of Amelia, OH, and Kevin Davis of Grandy, NC; a brother, Ezekiel W. Midgett of Harbinger, NC, and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Vernon Ray and William A. Midgett.

Frank Louis Kohler, Sr., age 61, of 13327 Brewster Road, Spring Hill, FL, died Saturday, January 24, 2004 in Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Camden, NJ, son of the late Frank Arthur and Rachel Belfiore Kohler and was the husband of Virginia Janice Andrews Kohler. He was a retired Master Chief for the U.S. Navy, where he served for 28 years, and was a veteran of the Viet Nam War, upon retiring from the Navy, he was the seafood manager of Kash ‘N Karry Grocery Store, in Spring Hill, FL for 14 years, and was a Catholic.

Besides his wife, Mr. Kohler is survived by a daughter, Kolleen Kohler Carroll and husband Paul Edward Carroll of Holiday, FL; two sons, Frank Louis Kohler, Jr. and fiancee Elizabeth Kaplan of Elizabeth City, NC and Kevin Michael Kohler and fiancee Heidi Murphy of Parrish, FL; and three grandchildren, Shannon Marie Carroll, Brittany Elizabeth Carroll, and Lauren Ashley Kohler.

Mr. Kohler is being sent to Spring Hill, FL, where a funeral service will be held at a later date.

Effie Barkley Ainsley, 90, of the 1300 block of Horner Street, Elizabeth City died Saturday morning, January 24, 2004, in the Guardian Care Nursing Home. She was born in Pasquotank County to the late Van B. and Beulah Mae Pritchard Sawyer and was the widow of the late Calvin Blackwell Barkley. She was a member of the Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church.

Mrs. Ainsley is survived by a daughter, Sylvia B. Williams and husband, Webb, of Kitty Hawk, NC; two sons, Carlton Gene Barkley and wife, Millie, of Wanchese and James V. Barkley and wife Delana, of Kitty Hawk, NC; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, January 26, 2004, at 11:00am in the Twiford Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City by Rev. Dr. Bob Crisp.
