ROBERT RICHARDSON DANIELS, 79, of Wanchese, NC died Tuesday, March 30, 2004 in a Chesapeake, Va. Hospital. Mr. Daniels, born in Wanchese, was a commercial fisherman and a Methodist. He was the son of the late Ruford and Gladys Daniels and the widower of the late Loma Moore Daniels.

Mr. Daniels is survived by three sons, Robert Dale Daniels of Huntington Beach, CA, William Tony Daniels and Teddy Doyle Daniels, both of Wanchese, NC; three sisters, Thelma Baum of Wanchese, NC, Laura Paul of Winterville, NC, and Reba Conrad of Charlotte, NC; two brothers, Tommy Daniels and Denny Daniels, both of Wanchese, NC; and three grandchildren, Meredith Preve Daniels, Robert Benjamin Daniels and Paula Devusser.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Wanchese Assembly of God on Saturday, April 3, 2004 at 2:00 pm with Charles Daniels officiating. Burial will follow in Cudworth Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Funeral Home, Manteo on Friday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.

Herman Cox

Herman Lee Cox, Sr.
Pasquotank County native

Mr. Herman Lee Cox, Sr., of 1912 Savin Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday morning, March 31, 2004, in the Albemarle Hospital after a short illness. He was a native and life long resident of Pasquotank County and the son of the late James Enoch Cox and Lillian Thornton Cox. He was a retired captain with the Elizabeth City Police Department with thirty-six years of service, a member of Corinth Baptist Church, and a member of the Pasquotank County Ruritan Club.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Vandegrift Cox of the residence; three sons, Herman Cox, Jr., and wife Madeline, and James W. Cox and wife Diana, all of Elizabeth City, NC, and Charles P. Cox and wife Cathy of Greenville, NC; four grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be 2:00 PM Friday, April 2, 2004, at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, with the Rev. Dr. Roy Head officiating. Native of Camden, NC

Ella Hubbard Riggs, age 101, of 167 Wharf Road, Shiloh, NC, died Monday, March 28, 2004, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Riggs, a native of Camden County, NC, was the widow of Charlie S. Riggs, and the daughter of the late Martin H. Hubbard and Addie Burgess Baker. She was a homemaker and a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.

She is survived by four daughters, Doris Williams and Frances Adkins, both of Portsmouth, VA, Edith Harrison of Chesapeake, VA, and Mary N. Balance of Shiloh, NC; two sons, Martin B. Riggs and Bert W. Riggs, both of Shiloh, NC; forty-three grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; and two great-great-great grandchildren; twelve step-grandchildren; and one step great-great grandchild. She was predeceased by a daughter, Ella M. Riggs; and four sons, Cale C. Riggs, Martin B. Riggs, Warren E. Riggs and Nolan M. Riggs; and four half-sisters, Margaret B. Leary, Mildred B. Harris, Ruby Slaughter, and Addie M. Thompson; and a half-brother, Frank Baker.

A graveside funeral service will be Thursday, April 1, 2004, at 11:00 AM at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence. Samuel Davis, Jr.

Samuel Sykes Davis, Jr., 90, of 428 Sam Davis Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, March 29, 2004 at Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Pasquotank County, son of the late Samuel Sykes Davis, Sr. and Gabrilla Bright Davis and was the widower of Murrel Monds Davis. He was the founder and owner of Davis Hardware for 50 years, a member of Calvary Baptist Church, and attended First United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served in WWII, a member of William Clarence Jackson V.F.W. Post 6060, and a past board member of the Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Davis is survived by a son, Samuel Sykes Davis, III and wife Patty; two grandsons, Samuel John Davis and Joshua Sykes “Sy” Davis; a sister, Annie Davis Allen. Mr. Davis was preceded in death by six sisters, Nancy Davis, Susie Davis, Jemima Laura Davis, Mary Davis Chory, Sally Davis, and Margaret Davis Jackson ; and a brother, James Morris Davis.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at 11:00 am in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Clyde Denny officiating. Burial will be in Old Hollywood Cemetery. Following the service the family will receive friends in the Asbury Room of the church and at other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Davis, III, 618 Small Drive, Elizabeth City, NC. Lois Wahab

Lois Anne Howard Wahab, age 79, of Salem, VA, formerly of Ocracoke, NC, died on Saturday, March 27, 2004 at her residence in Virginia. A native of Hyde County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Stacy Wilson and Elizabeth Evan Ballance Howard, and was the widow of Archie T. Wahab. She was a housewife, and a member of Ocracoke United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Wahab is survived by, one daughter Virginia Daulton of Salem, VA; two sons, Roy Wahab of Chesapeake, VA, and Perry Wahab of Milwaukee, WI; one sister Blanche Jolliff of Ocracoke, NC; six grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, March 30, 2004 at 11:00 AM, in Ocracoke United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ray Kanode officiating. Burial will follow in the Howard Family Cemetery in Ocracoke. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the church.

IRENE QUIDLEY PAYNE, 72, of Manteo, died, Sunday, March 28, 2004, in Elizabeth City. Mrs. Payne was born in Manteo and was a homemaker. She was a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church.

She was the daughter of the late Rowan and Grace Midgett Quidley and the wife of the late Hezekiah Frank Payne, Sr.

Surviving are seven daughters; Frankie P. Self of Elizabeth City, Lana Martinez, Larri Peyton, Diane Flynt and Donna Willis all of Manteo, Elizabeth Rowe of Manns Harbor and Maxine Richards of Deery, N.H., one son; Hezekiah ‘Buddy’ Payne, Jr of Manteo, one step-daughter; Norma Etheridge of Manteo and one step-son; William ‘Billy’ Payne of Boone, N.C., three sisters; Lela Jones of Portsmouth, Va, Lois Twyne and Jean Godfrey both of Manteo, three brothers; Odell Quidley of Powells Point, Charles Quidley and Earl Quidley both of Manteo and Ralph Sears of Grandy. 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at 11:00 a.m. in Twiford’s Colony Chapel by the Rev Glenn Greenway with burial in Roanoke Island Memorial Gardens. Friends may join the family at Twiford’s Funeral Home, Tuesday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Alethia Baum

Alethia Aydlett Baum, age 80, of 119 Robert Street, Camden, NC, died Sunday, March 28, 2004, at the Sentara Norfolk Hospital. Mrs. Baum, a native of Currituck County, NC was the widow of W. E. ‘Junior’ Baum, and the daughter of the late Mark L. Aydlett and Alethia Owens Aydlett. She was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist church, the United Methodist Women, and the Currituck Christian Women.

Mrs. Baum is survived by a sister, Ruth Aydlett Stone of Powell’s Point, NC; two brothers, Guy Aydlett of Portsmouth, VA, and Mark R. Aydlett of Newport News, VA.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 31, at 11:00 AM at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with the Rev. Glenn H. McCraine officiating. Margaret “Peggy” Ragen

Margaret ‘Peggy’ Morgan Ragen, age 52, of 271 East Hwy. 158. Camden, NC, died Saturday, March 27, 2004 at the Albemarle Hospital, in Elizabeth City, NC. A native of Pasquotank County, she was the daughter of the late Wilbert E. and Elizabeth B. Morgan, and was the wife of Vincent Ragen of the residence. Mrs. Ragen worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant 2 in Adult Day Care.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Ragen is survived by: three sisters, Debra M. Trueblood and Brenda M. Gray, both of Elizabeth City, NC, and Sandra Daniel of Glade Water, TX; one brother Robert Morgan of FL; three nieces, Kimberly T. Solesbee of Elizabeth City, NC, Tiffany M. Baker of FL, and Erica Gray, of Elizabeth City, NC; one nephew Jack D. Trueblood III, of Hertford, NC; and three great nephews, Anthony Lane, Ethan Solesbee, and Zakary Solesbee.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at 4:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street with Rev.Alan Gibson officiating. Marian Korta Felick, 76, of 310 Pine Grove Trail, Kill Devil Hills, NC, died Friday, March 26, 2004 in Virginia Beach, VA. She was born in Pittsburgh, PA to the late Edward and Florence Downs Korta and was the wife of Robert E. Felick of the home. She was a homemaker, a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, and an avid gardener.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Felick is survived by a daughter, Elaine Robey and husband Jack of Kill Devil Hills, NC; a grandson, Justin Robey of Kill Devil Hills, NC; a sister, Jean Bardyn of Pittsburgh, PA; two brothers, George Korta of Pittsburgh, PA and Ed Korta of California; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at 10:00 AM at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church by Father Bill Walsh. Burial will be at Laurel Memorial Gardens, Poplar Branch, NC.
