JAY WILLIAM CASSIDY, 67, of Avon, NC went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 29, 2004. He was born March 27, 1937 in Stoystown, PA, son of the late George W. Cassady and Rhea Grace Zimmerman Cassady Cotter.

Mr. Cassidy was a 1955 graduate of Shanksville Stoney Creek High School. He attended 3 years at California State College, studying Industrial Arts, attended Penn State University and University of Pittsburgh earning a Real Estate License, and studied accounting at Cambria Rowe in Johnstown, PA. Mr. Cassidy was self-employed in the Fuel Oil Business for 10 years, a Psychiatric Aide at Somerset State Hospital for 7 years, an Independent Contractor with Somerset Daily American, delivering the Somerset County Shopper for 14 years. He was employed for 3 years with County Market, Somerset, 3 years with Protective Services, Inc., Johnstown, PA and, most recently, with Food Lion in Avon, NC from 1995 to present. He was a member of Boy Scouts of America Troop 153, Buckstown, PA, a member of Friedens Lutheran Church, Friedens, PA and attended the Buxton United Methodist Church, Buxton, NC.

Mr. Cassidy is survived by his wife of 36 years, Mary Belle West Cassidy of the residence; four step-daughters, Linda Stahlman and husband, Paul of Fairmount City, PA, Debra Hoffman and husband, Ronald of Laurens, SC, Beverly Whited and husband, Rodney of Russell, PA, and Susan Coughenour and husband, John of Berlin, PA; eleven step-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren; one niece and two nephew, and an aunt, Edna Wagner of Berlin, PA; and a brother, Barry Lee Cassady.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at Buxton United Methodist Church on Sunday, May 9, 2004 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation, the Buxton United Methodist Church, Dare Home Health and Hospice, Dare County EMS or to the church of one’s choice.
Memorial service to be held at Friedens Lutheran Church, Friedens, PA to be announced at a later date.

CHESAPEAKE ‘Barbara L. Henry, 68, passed away April 28, 2004. She was taken from this earth on Wednesday morning to be with those who needed her at this time. She was the former wife of Norman Henry, the proud mother of Sean (Laura), Brian (Yumiko), Ronald (Carrie) and Kelly Henry. She was the loving grandmother to Nicole, Sara, Kyle, Brandon, Joseph, and Anna. Her love of life, sharp wit, sense of humor and time spent with her children and grandchildren will be greatly missed. During her times of trial and suffering, she was never alone. She was always in the thoughts and prayers of those who loved her unconditionally. The family will receive family and friends for remembrance 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Twiford’s Colonial Chapel 929 S. Battlefield Blvd. In Chesapeake.

Edward R. Boncek, Sr.

EDWARD RICHARD BONCEK, SR., formerly of Elizabeth City, passed away on April 27, 2004 at his son’s residence in Nags Head. A native of Pittsburgh, PA, he was born on November 1, 1929.

Mr. Boncek joined the Air Force in 1946 and was a veteran of the Korean War and Vietnam. Following retirement from the Air Force, he began a second career as an Electronics Technician with the FAA, which sent him to the Elizabeth City Airport on the Coast Guard Base in Weeksville, where he was responsible for navigational aids and teletype equipment in Buxton and Elizabeth City.

Mr. Boncek is survived by a son, Edward Richard Boncek, Jr., wife, Susan, and granddaughter, Alexandra of Nags Head and one daughter, Elyse Boncek of Kill Devil Hills. He is survived by brothers, John Boncek of Lillburn, GA, Bill Boncek of Herford, NC and Stanley Boncek of Castroville, TX, sisters, Rita Mae Hamling of Vero Beach, FL, Ann Rubino of Upper St. Clair, PA, JoAnn Licciardello of Pittsburgh, PA and Theresa Kelsey of Gun Barrell City, TX.

A memorial service will be held at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Elizabeth City at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, May 5, 2004. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Holy Family Catholic Church Food Bank, 1453 N. Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Cecil Cabot Benton, age 88, of South Mills, NC, died Thursday, April 29, 2004 at his residence. He was born in Columbus County, NC, son of the late Lucien Perry and Bertie Kissam Benton and was the widower of Margaret James Benton. He was a member of Evergreen United Methodist Church and attended Trinity United Methodist Church, a charter member of the South Mills Volunteer Fire Department, and a charter member of the South Mills Ruritan Club.

Mr. Benton is survived by a daughter, Vivian Benton Bridgers and husband Val of South Mills, NC; a son-in-law, Ken Winslow of South Mills, NC; two brothers, Arthur Benton and wife Helen of Kenansville, NC, and Benjamin W. Benton, Sr. and wife Thelma of South Mills, NC; four grandchildren, Kennette Winslow Watkins and husband Nealson, Amanda Cecile Winslow, Morgan Benton Bridgers, and Courtney James Bridgers, and a great grandson, William Holden Watkins. Beside his wife, Mr. Benton is preceded in death by a daughter, Lois Marie Benton Winslow, a son, Benjamin P. Benton, a sister, Betty Sibbett, and three brothers, Rufus, Clarence, and Ralph Benton.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 1, 2004 at 2:00 pm in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Tommy Fields. Daniel Woodrow ‘Woodie’ Beals, Sr., age 73, of 116 Shipyard Road, Camden, NC, died Monday, April 26, 2004 in Chowan Hospital. He was a native of Elizabeth City, NC, and son of the late Ervin Roosevelt Beals and Gladys Sawyer Beals, and was the husband of Faye Bartlett Beals of the residence. Mr. Beals was a retired Captain with the Elizabeth City Fire Department after 31 years of service, June 1961 ‘ February 1990, and a member of Camden United Methodist Church.

Besides his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Joy B. Rhodes and her husband, Albert, and Judy B. Johnson and her husband, Elwood, both of Elizabeth City, NC, and Tighe B. Simons of Ashville, NC; one son, Daniel Beals, Jr. and his wife Susan of Elizabeth City, NC; and a daughter in law, Debbie Beals of Upper Marlboro, MD; one step son, Todd Harrison of Camden, NC; one sister, Louise B. Stone of Hertford, NC; three half sisters, Brenda Conner of Corpus Christi, TX, Connie Whitley of Hertford, NC, and Sandy Sawyer of Camden, NC; one brother, Robert Elvin Beals of Denver, CO; one half brother, Michael Douglas Beals of Corpus Christi, TX; five grandchildren, two step grandsons, three great grandchildren, and special family friends, the Victor Allen family of Pensacola, FL. Mr. Beals was predeceased by one son, Kenneth Leroy Beals, and one sister, Doris B. Warden.

Carolyn Frances West Jordan, age 58, of 1700 Edgewood Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, April 26, 2004, in Chesapeake General Hospital. She was a native of Chowan, NC, and was the daughter of the late Willie Reed West and Sarah Chappell West, and the wife of Thomas Jacob Jordan of the residence. She was a Preschool teacher with Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Melissa C. Jordan of the residence; one son, Wesley T. Jordan also of the residence; one half sister, Estelle Dempsey of Austin, TX; one brother, Gordan K. West of Sanford, NC; two half brothers, William R. West of Dotham, AL, and Phillip C. West of Clovis, NM.

Richard Younkman

Richard D. Younkman, HMC USN RETIRED, died April 25, 2004 in Sentara Nursing Home in Currituck County, NC. He was born in Detroit, Michigan, on February 20, 1918. He also retired from the Virginia State Health Department as a registered sanitarian and health educator in 1980.

Mr. Younkman’s Navy service included tours aboard the USS Chaumont, USS Henderson, USS Blackhawk, USS Seekonk, USS Tumult, and USS Buckley. He also served at the US Naval Hospital, Newport, RI, and the US Naval Hospital, Canacao, Philippines. Other service included Marine Detachment, Tientsin, China, Recruiting Duty, Manhattan, NY, and District Medical Office, Philadelphia, PA. Some of his service awards and medals include the China Service Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre of War, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense, Victory Medal, American Campaign, Korean Service, WWII Service, and Philippine Liberation.

After retiring from the Navy, Mr. Younkman continued to serve in various organizations until his death. He was Past Regional President of the East Coast Region of the Fleet Reserve Association, and Past President of Branch 60, Norfolk, VA, and Past President of Branch 40, Chesapeake, VA Fleet Reserve Associations. He was also a Past Commander and life member of Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 26, Chesapeake, VA. Other life memberships include American Legion Post 204, Norfolk, VA and the Virginia Government Employees Association.

For fifty-two years, Mr. Younkman was active in the Boy Scouts of America! As an adult leader, he served as Cubmaster, Scoutmaster for three different troops, Campmaster, District Training Chairman of three districts in the Tidewater Council, and District Commissioner. He was honored with the following awards: Cubmasters Key, Scouters Key, Scoutmasters Key, District Award of Merit, Commissioners Key, and the Silver Beaver.

Survivors include his wife of forty-four years, Jane H. Younkman, and two sons, George V. Younkman and Richard Younkman, Jr. of Lester, PA. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Greg, David, Kathleen, Kristen, and Marie, and four great grandchildren: Jacob, Caleb, Kyle, and Gianna Rose.

A funeral service will be conducted at Twiford’s Funeral Home in Elizabeth City, NC on Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at 11:00 AM. A Fleet Reserve Ritual will be conducted by the Fleet Reserve Association, Branch 40, Chesapeake, VA, and led by W. Ralph Holcombe. The Reverend David Combs will also assist. Christopher Lee Smith Perry, 26, died Wednesday, April 21, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Perry was born in Dare County and was a construction repairman. The happiest times of his life was working for the Colington Volunteer Fire Department. He was the son of William Joseph Perry, Jr. and Miranda Owens Perry of Colington Harbour.

Besides his parents, he is survived by Maternal grandparents, Marious and Rena Owens of Harbinger; Paternal grandmother, Lucy S. Perry of Baum Bay in Kill Devil Hills; grandparents, Elwood and Donis Alexander of Manteo; one sister, Alisia Perry of Colington Harbour; one brother, Walter L. Perry, II of Moscow, Russia; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Johnnie Cecil Hooker, age 80, formerly of Elizabeth City, NC, and Brian Center Nursing Home of Hertford, NC, died Wednesday, April 21, 2004, in the Albemarle Hospital. He was a native of Elizabeth City, NC, and was a retired cook for S.C. Loveland Company, and a veteran of the U.S. Army. Mr. Hooker was the son of the late Johnnie E. Hooker and Bessie White Hooker.

He is survived by one daughter, Sandra H. Bascombe of Chesapeake, VA; one son Gary Stephen Hooker, Sr. of West Palm Beach, FL; and his companion, Pauline Cuthrell of Elizabeth City, NC; two brothers, Caleb Hooker and Pete Hooker both of Elizabeth City, NC; ten grandchildren, and thirteen great grandchildren. He was predeceased by one son, Jeffrey C. Hooker, and two grandsons Jeffrey Cecil Hooker and Joey Dail Hooker.
