Dorothy Bass Brickle, 81, of 4718 South Pamlico Way, Nags Head, NC died Sunday, May 30, 2004 at her residence. She was born in Rocky Hock, NC to the late Jack Quinton and Elizabeth Smith Bass and was the widow of Clarence Gibson ‘Brick’ Brickle. She was a former owneroperator of Brick’s Service Station from 1961-1984 and a member of Rocky Hock Baptist Church.

Mrs. Brickle is survived by three sons, John Gibson ‘Jack’ Brickle of Kitty Hawk, NC, David Clarence Brickle and wife Donna of Kill Devil Hills, NC, and Robert Gibson ‘Bobby’ Brickle of Nags Head, NC; one sister, Madge Fleetwood of Edenton, NC; one brother, Howard Bass of Plymouth, NC; and three grandsons, Steven, Michael, and Daniel Brickle. She was preceded in death by a sister, Blanche Herrin and two brothers, Murray and Linwood Bass.

A graveside service will be conducted on Wednesday, June 2, 2004 at 3:00 PM at Roanoke Island Memorial Gardens by the Rev. David Daniels. The family will receive friends and relatives at the residence immediately following the graveside service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Dare County EMS, P.O. Marguerite Booth

Marguerite Lyle Drinkwater Booth, 88, died on Saturday, May 29, 2004 at the Outer Banks Hospital. Mrs. Booth was born in Manteo and was owner of The Booth Guest House. She was a member of the Catholic Church and The Rebekah Lodge #52. She was the daughter of the late Alpheus Drinkwater and the late Rosa Lee Gray Drinkwater and the widow of John Lee Booth, Sr.

Mrs. Booth is survived by two sons, John Lee Booth, Jr. and wife, Noel and Robert Allen ‘Bobby’ Booth, both of Manteo; three grandchildren, one great grandchild and five step-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo on Friday, June 4, 2004 at 7:30 pm. Burial will be in the Manteo Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Booth Guest House, 101 Morrison Grove Road, Manteo on Thursday evening from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. Murray Seaton Smith, age 89, of 217 Red Bank Road, Hertford, NC, died Sunday, May 30, 2004 at Guardian Care of Elizabeth City. He was born in Pasquotank County, son of the late Matthew Spivey and Mollie Brown Smith and was the husband of Verna Ruth Fidler Smith of Hertford, NC. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and U.S. Marines, having served during WWII, and was a Baptist.

Beside his wife, Mr. Smith is survived by two daughters, Katherine Jane and Mary Smith Burnett and husband John of Hertford, NC; a son, Dennis Habel and wife Betty of Hertford, NC; and two grandchildren, Marina Smith and Benjamin Smith. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Edna Newbern and Lillie Mae Yates, and a brother, Roscoe Smith.

A graveside service will be Wednesday, June 2, 2004 at 2:00 pm in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home before the service from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm, and at other times at the home place, 217 Red Bank Road, Hertford, NC. Jon Jackson

Jon Ambrose Jackson, age 13, of 691 Firetower Road, Elizabeth City, NC, left us too fast ‘ too soon while enjoying life on his bike, Friday, May 28, 2004. Jon, born in Chesapeake, VA, was the son of James Jeffery ‘Jeff’ and Karen Spence Jackson of the residence.

Jon was an eighth grade student at Elizabeth City Middle School and attended Ramoth Gilead Baptist Church. He enjoyed horse-back riding, spending time with his family and friends at his brother’s go-kart racing events, and cruising on his motorcycle with brothers, cousins, and friends.

Besides his parents he is survived by two brothers, Jared Jackson and Jed Jackson both of the residence; paternal grandmother, Annie Jackson of Elizabeth City, NC; maternal grandmother, Sophia Spence of Elizabeth City, NC; many loved uncles, aunts, cousins, friends, and special teachers; and his pet cat Oreo.

Funeral services will be Monday, May 31, 2004, at 11:00 AM at Ramoth Gilead Baptist Church with the Rev. Glenn Greenway and the Rev. Toni Wood officiating. Burial will follow in Whitney Cemetery. Robert Austin

Robert Lawrence Austin, 85, died Tuesday, May 25, 2004 at Sentara Barco Nursing Home. Mr. Austin was born in Hatteras and was a carpenter. He was a member of the Hatteras Assembly of God Church and a member of the VFW. His military service includes, serving as a SGT with the US Army during WWII. He was a member of the 2nd Ranger Infantry Battalion and participated in the D-Day invasion at Normandy Beach. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Mr. Austin was the son of the late Henry Bunyan Austin and the late Minerva Wedmore Austin Austin and was the widower of Joyce Busby Austin.

He is survived by one daughter, Jennifer A. Stowe and husband Bill of Raleigh; two sisters, Margaret Bateman of Arapahoe, NC and Wilma Austin of New Bern, NC. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Edna, Elaine and half-sister, Olivia; also preceding him in death are three brothers, Arthur, John Littleton, Wilbur and half-brother, Zach.

A graveside service will be held at the Family Cemetery at 57305 Eagle Pass Road, Hatteras, on Friday, May 28, 2004 at 2:00 Pm with Rev. John Cullop and Rev. Jim Reynolds officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday at Twiford’s Island Chapel, Hatteras, from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. The family will be meeting at the home of Monroe Stowe, 57084 Kohler Road, Hatteras, at other times.

Virginia “Ginks” Pitts

Virginia Clyde Lambeth Pitts, 91, died on Saturday, May 22, 2004 at her residence. Mrs. Pitts was born in Okema, OK, was a homemaker and an Episcopalian. She was the daughter of the late Knox Garfield Lambeth and the late Cora Leona Watson and was the widow of Col. Kern Phillips Pitts.

She is survived by two daughters, Toni Smythe of Albuquerque, Mexico, Diane Pitts of Dallas, TX and four grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at Southern Shores Cemetery on Wednesday, June 2, 2004 at 2:00 PM with Taylor Wilson officiating. Aaliyah Marie McClease, infant daughter of Derek Emil McClease and Billie Jo Luton, died Tuesday, May 25, 2004, in the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters.

Besides her parents she is survived by a twin sister, Aalyssah Shea McClease of the home. She is also survived by maternal grandparents, Steve and Jean McDaniels of Elizabeth City, NC; maternal grandfather, Bill Luton of Elizabeth City, NC; Paternal grandmother, Tavia Newell of Newark, NJ; paternal grandfather, Dennis McClease of Newark, NJ; great maternal grandmothers, Evelyn Luton and Margueritte Walker both of Elizabeth City, NC; great grandparents, Tom and Aileen McDaniels of Elizabeth City, NC; great paternal grandmother, Daisy Newell of NJ.

Russell Everett Lundberg, age 69, of Carolina Beach, NC, died Saturday, May 22, 2004 in the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Center in Wilmington, NC. He was born in Gardner, MA, and was the son of the late Hokan Rudolph Lundberg, and Marie Peterson Lundberg, and husband of the late Elizabeth Ann Nickerson Lundberg. He was a retired Master Chief E-9 with the U.S. Coast Guard.

He is survived by five sons, Steve Lundberg of Carolina Beach, NC, Andrew Lundberg, Jerry Williams, and his wife, Xanda of Elizabeth City, NC, Michael Williams of Houston, TX, and Scott Williams of Myrtle Beach, SC; two sisters, Arlene L. Briggs and her husband Ronald of Grandville, MI, and Janet L. Buist and her husband Elmer of Coopersville, MI; five grandchildren. Also surviving is his first wife, Anne Yausse Lundberg of Elizabeth City, NC. He was predeceased by one daughter, Karen Anne Lundberg.

VA Beach ‘ John Lewis Brothers, 92, passed away peacefully Sunday, May 23, 2004 with family members at his side. Mr. Brothers was born in Princess Anne County to the late Benjamin Luther and Ida Mitchell Brothers. He was retired from the VA Beach Utility Department, and a member of the Church of Christ at Creeds.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Lianae S. Brothers; one daughter, Jeanette L. Goins and husband Jim of Richmond; four sons, William L. Brothers and wife, Faye of Richmond, John A. Brothers and wife, Nita of Chesterfield County, VA, James M. Brothers and wife, Susan of Chesapeake and Carey R. Brothers and wife, Kathy of VA Beach; fifteen grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 am at Rosewood Memorial Park with Minister John Boyer officiating. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake on Tuesday from 7:00 until 8:00 pm.

Pierre LeFevre

Col. Pierre L. LeFevre, Retired USMC

Chesapeake ‘ Pierre Louis LeFevre, 69, died Saturday, May 22, 2004 at Chesapeake General Hospital after a long battle with COPD.
A native of Muskegon MI, Col. LeFevre started his Marine Corps career in 1953 when he enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve. He graduated in May of 1957 from John Carroll University and earned his commission in June of 1957. He married Anne Kearns on April 23, 1960.
He proudly served his country for thirty-four years. In his career, Pierre served as the Detachment Commanding Officer aboard the USS Kearsarge in June of 1965. Promoted to Major, he was assigned to Co. A, Headquarters Battalion, MCS Command and Staff College. Later in his career, he served as C.O. of the Marine Barracks in Rota Spain and Operations Officer at Headquarters Marine Corps. He ended his career as the Deputy Chief of Staff- Command Inspector for MCDEC at Quantico, VA.
During his distinguished career, Colonel LeFevre served three tours in Vietnam, he participated in combat operations: Dubois Square, Hoan Dieu and Upshur Stream. His personal decorations include the Legion of Merit with Presidential Unit Citation and National Defense Service. After his retirement from the Marine Corps, Colonel LeFevre served as Dean of Men at Bishop Ireton High School in Arlington, VA. In December of 2000, Colonel LeFevre’s beloved wife, Anne, passed away due to cancer. In June of 2001, Colonel LeFevre accompanied his son David and daughter-in-law, Lisa, to Chesapeake, VA. In November of 2003, Pierre married an old family friend, Esther Ramsey.
Colonel LeFevre is survived by his wife Esther; three children, David, Mark and Nancy; ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He is predeceased by one grandchild, Rachel LeFevre.
A quote from Colonel LeFevre’s six-year-old grandson, Tyler LeFevre, best summarizes where his grandfather is, ‘Grandpa is guarding the gates of heaven.’
The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake on Thursday, May 27th at 6:00 p.m.. A prayer service will follow at 7:30 p.m.. The family will receive friends on June 3, from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Everly Funeral Home in Fairfax, VA. A Funeral Mass will be held on June 4 at 11:00 am at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Vienna, VA with burial following on July 12 at 10:45 am in Arlington National Cemetery.
