WALTER J. MEADS
Avid foxhunter

Walter J. Meads, 75, of 802 Lake Road, Hertford, NC died Wednesday morning, July 28, 2004, in the Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Pasquotank County, NC to the late Elihu and Allie Morris Meads. He retired as a supervisor from IXL after 28 years. Mr. Meads was a lifetime member of the Albemarle Houndsman Association, a member of the Dry Ridge Hunt Club and Weeksville Hunting Club. He was an avid foxhunter and loved the outdoors.

Mr. Meads is survived by his wife, Dianne Dail Meads of the home, one daughter Sandra Meads of Shiloh, NC; six sons, Walter Ray Meads and wife, Jo, Keith Meads and wife, Geraldine, Alan Meads and wife, Kathy, Chris Meads and wife Sylvia, Ted Meads and wife Missy all of Elizabeth City, NC and Rex Meads and wife, Gloria of Kitty Hawk, NC. He is also survived by two step daughters, Wendy Lowe and husband, Buddy and Jenny Boyce and husband, Richie all of Hertford, NC; a step son, Peanut Parker and wife, Kirby of Sunbury, NC; two sisters, Lena Parker and Elsie Nixon both of Elizabeth City, NC. Also surviving are twelve grandchildren, Jason Meads, Lisa Meads, Leonard Meads, Amber Meads, Eric Meads, Kyle Meads, Everett Meads, Zack Meads all of Elizabeth City, Jay Meads and wife, Laura, Walter Alan Meads, all of Hertford, NC, Ryan Meads and Jonathan Meads both of Kitty Hawk, NC; five step grandchildren, Josh Lowe, Ben Lowe, Dustin Boyce, Lanie Boyce all of Hertford, NC and Pierce Parker of Sunbury, NC; three great grandchildren, Cody Meads, Aaron Meads both of Edenton, NC and Jakob Meads of Hertford, NC. Mr. Meads was preceded in death by a sister, Margie Jones.

A graveside service will be conducted Friday, July 30, 2004, at 11:00am in the New Hollywood Cemetery by Rev. Stuart Meads. The family will receive friends and relatives Thursday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City and at other times at their residence, 802 Lake Road, Hertford, NC. Jean Miller

Jean Hambleton Miller, 81, died on Tuesday, July 27, 2004 at a Norfolk hospital.
Mrs. Miller was born in Washington, DC and was a retired artist and a homemaker. She was a graduate of Miami University and a member of the Duck Woods Country Club, the Dare County Arts Council and the Outer Banks Community Foundation. Mrs. Miller was the daughter of the late James I. Hambleton and the late Mabel Nichol Hambleton and the wife of Glen Miller of the home.

Besides her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Melissa M. Gibson and husband, James E. of Williamsburg, VA; two sisters, Edwina Earp of Olney, MD and Nancy Chance of Brookville, MD; three grandchildren, Chase, Deehje and Taylor Gibson; she was preceded in death by two sons, Chase H. Miller and Craig N. Miller.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Duck United Methodist Church Gazebo on Friday, July 30, 2004 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Charles Gill officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Outer Banks Community Foundation, P.O. Box 1100, Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948.

Mrs.Vonceil Smith Head, 63, of 1034 US 17 South, Elizabeth City, NC, beloved wife of Dr. Roy L. Head, Pastor of Corinth Baptist Church of Elizabeth City, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, July 26, 2004, at her residence. She was born in Jeffersonville, GA to the late Rev. David Maurice Smith, Sr. and Ruthy Mae Worthington Smith. Mrs. Head was a member of the Corinth Baptist Church, and a former piano teacher and church pianist.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. Roy L. Head, pastor of the Corinth Baptist Church, three sons, Kevin Head and his wife Amy of Lumberton, NC, Derek Head and his wife Melissa of Louisville, KY, and David Head and his wife Lynda of Aiken, SC; five grandchildren, Jenna, Avery, Joshua, Evalyn and Donavon; one brother, David Maurice Smith, and his wife Faye of Aiken, SC; two sisters Ruthy Mae Stevens and her husband Bill of Tulsa, OK, and Carey Will and her husband Owen of Aiken, SC. She was predeceased by a sister, Martha.

A visition will be Tuesday evening, 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at Corinth Baptist Church and funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, July 28, 2004 at 11:00 AM also at Corinth Baptist Church. Additional services will be held at First Baptist Church, Belvelere, SC on Friday at 11:00 AM.

Virginia Topping

Virginia Taft Topping, age 78, of 1385 South 343, Shiloh, NC, died Thursday, July 22, 2004 in Albemarle Hospital. She was a native of Elizabeth City, NC, and was the daughter of the late Dallas Louis Taft and Susan Sears Taft. She was the wife of the late Roosevelt Topping, and a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Topping is survived by one daughter, Jo-Anne Stephenson and her husband Louis of Shiloh, NC; one son, Bruce Topping and his wife Anita of Elizabeth City, NC; three grandchildren, Randy and Gerald Stephenson, and Jennifer Ward, and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by one brother, Talmadge Taft.

A graveside service will be Saturday, July 24, 2004 at 11:00 AM in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Roland Cooper officiating. Jonathan Sawyer

Jonathan ‘John’ Boutton Sawyer, Sr., age 88, of 100 Sawyers Lane Powells Point, N. C., died Saturday July 17, 2004 at his residence.

Mr. Sawyer was born in Beaufort County, N. C. and was the son of the late James Lloyd and Mary Ellen Wallace Sawyer. He was preceded in death by his wife Mildred Wallace Sawyer on January 21, 2000, one son Johnny Sawyer and one granddaughter Jennifer G. Wood. Mr. Sawyer was a veteran of the U. S. Navy serving during World War II, a member of the Jarvisburg Church of Christ, and the retired owner and manager of North River Orchard.

Survivors include three daughters; Alma S. Forbes of Powells Point,
N. C. , Susan S. Tillman and her husband Lamar of King, N. C. and Anne S. Banks and her husband Aubrey of Winston-Salem, N. C., ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, and one brother William Lloyd Sawyer of Mt. Holly, N. C.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11:00 A. M. at the Jarvisburg Church of Christ with Dennis Crehan and Lamar Tillman officiating. Burial will follow at the Jarvisburg Church of Christ Cemetery on Fisher’s Road. Military rites will be rendered by the V. F. W. Post # 6060 honor guard unit of Elizabeth City, N. C. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

The family will join friends Tuesday morning from 9:45 A. M. until the funeral hour at the Jarvisburg Church of Christ and other times at his home.

Calvin Sawyer

CALVIN STAPLES SAWYER, 80 of 1314 Shawboro Road died Saturday, July 17, 2004, in the Albemarle Hospital. He was a native of Camden County son of the late Coston and Emily Staples Sawyer and the husband of Marguerite Pell Sawyer for over 60 years. He was a member of the Providence Baptist Church, the Shawboro Ruitans, Hall Masonic Lodge #53 AF & AM, the Indian Ridge Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #319 where he was a Past Patron. Mr. Sawyer was associated with Sawyers House of Furniture and Eyeball Inc. Rental Company.

Besides his wife he is survived by: one son Baxter Sawyer and his wife Kay of Gregory, NC; one sister Vivian Hodges of Lincoln, NC; and three brothers C.L. Sawyer, Ambrose Sawyer and William Sawyer all of Elizabeth City, NC. He was preceeded in death by two sisters Gertie Basnight and Emily Davenport, and one brother Sam Sawyer.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, July 20, 2004 at 3:00 PM in Twifords Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC by Revs. Charles Stevens and Charles Wellons. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Masonic Rites. Jon Vanscoy, age 27, of 103 Bobwhite Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Thusday, July 15, 2004. He was a native of Elizabeth City, NC, and was the son of Harry Elsworth Vanscoy and Twila Jean Kesling Vanscoy. He was the husband of Melanie Jo Culpepper Vanscoy of the residence. He worked with the Great Lakes Dock and Dredging Company and was a former employee with the Norfolk Dredging Company. He was a member of Salem Baptist Church and the I.U.O.E. Local 25.

Besides his wife and parents Mr. Vanscoy is survived by one son, Blake Everett Vanscoy of Elizabeth City, NC; two sisters, Barbara V. Vogt of Elizabeth City, NC, and Lois V. White of Edenton, NC; one brother, Joel Vanscoy of Chesapeake, VA.

A memorial service will be Sunday, July 18, 2004, at 3:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street with the Rev. Clay Manos officiating. The family will join friends in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service. Joann Phillips

Joann Phillips, formerly of Virginia Beach, passed away peacefully in her home on July 16, 2004, surrounded by her loving family. Joann was born in the mountains of West Virginia and she always considered those mountains to be her home. She had a tremendous love for nature which she instilled deeply in all five of her children. Joann was an avid reader, consuming five or more books a week throughout her entire life. Her love for the written word afforded her an education no school could ever possibly offer. In her thirties she embarked on a very successful career in sales. She quickly became the top salesperson for both Rice’s Nachmans, and Avon.

Joann was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Charles A. Phillips, and her son Joseph H. Phillips, as well as by her brother, Clarence ‘Junior’ Haddix. She leaves behind her four loving children, three grandchildren and her four loving and wonderful sisters, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Joann will be remembered for her sharp wit and her wonderful sense of humor.

She will be buried at Baltimore National Cemetery beside her beloved husband, as well as her son, Joey. Joann’s life was about love for friends and family, and she will never be forgotten by those of us who were blessed to have known her. May she rest in the loving arms of the source from which all life springs, and to which all life returns, eternally peaceful, and where the springs of love and forgiveness runneth over.

Floyd ‘Fluff’ Leland Parker, age 76, of 253 N. Spot Road, in the Spot community of Powells Point, NC, died Tuesday, July 13, 2004 in Norfolk General Hospital. He was a native of Currituck County, NC, and was the son of the late Charlie and Edie Gallop Parker. He was the husband of Joann Forbes Parker of the residence. Mr. Parker was a retired commercial fisherman and was an elder at Powell’s Point Christian Church.

Besides his wife he is survived by one daughter, Iris Ann Parker Clark and Stephen Harris; one sister Kathleen Parker of Spot, NC; two grandchildren, Buddy and Wayne Clark both of Spot, NC. He was predeceased by one son, Gary Wayne Parker, and one son in law, Kevin Clark, Sr.

A memorial service will be Sunday, July 18, 2004 in Powells Point Christian Church at 2:00 PM with the Rev. David Coxson, Rev. Cecil Styons, and Rev. Jerry Owens. Charles Eldridge LaNier, age 76, of 5736 Jessup Station Court, Richmond, VA, formerly of Blounts Creek, NC, died Sunday, July 11, 2004 at his residence. He was born in Wilmington, NC, son of the late John LaNier and Lillian Taylor LaNier and was the husband of Erlean Pritchard LaNier of the residence. Mr. LaNier was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in WWII, veteran of the U.S. Army Reserves, Air Force Reserves, and the Merchant Marines, and was a retired aircraft electrician for the civil service, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans.

Besides his wife, Mr. LaNier is survived by a daughter, Beth Page LaNier of Glen Allen, VA; three sisters, Evelyn LaNier Bankos of Virginia Beach, VA, Eleanor LaNier Morton of Wilmington, NC, and Erma LaNier of Southern Shores, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside memorial service will be held Saturday, July 17, 2004 at 11:00 am in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. George Roberson officiating.
