WILLIAM PAUL ‘Bill’ HARRIS, JR.
Pasquotank County native

William Paul ‘Bill’ Harris, Jr., of 2925 W. Main Street, Elizabeth City died Monday, August 30, 2004, in the Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Pasquotank County to the late William Paul Harris, Sr. and Sadie McPherson Harris and was the husband of Pallie Temple Harris. Mr. Harris was the owner/operator of Bill’s Saw and Tool Shop, a member of Berea Baptist Church and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the US Army.

Besides his wife, Mr. Harris is survived by four daughters, Linda Aycock and husband, Jerry of Marion, NC, Patricia Boyce and husband, M. C., of Hertford, NC, Katherine Harris and fiance, Bob Norton, of Elizabeth City, and Margaret ‘Lori’ Harris of Chicago, Il; one son, Wayne T. Harris and wife, Susan, of Cary, NC; two sisters, Effie H. Harris and Frances McNaughton and husband, Frank, all of Elizabeth City. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Michael Aycock and wife, Stephani, Matthew Aycock, Diana Carol Boyce, Wade Boyce, Anna Harris, Carter Harris and Sawyer Harris. Mr. Harris was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Graham Harris.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, September 2, 2004, at 2:00pm in the Twiford Memorial Chapel by Rev. Roger Stanley. Burial will be in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the funeral service and at other times at their residence, 2925 W. Main Street, Elizabeth City. Evelyn Q. Cullipher

BUXTON, NC

EVELYN JOAN QUIDLEY CULLIPHER, 88, of Buxton, NC died Monday, August 30, 2004 at her residence. Mrs. Cullipher was born in Buxton and was a homemaker and a Pentecostal. She was the daughter of the late Omasa and Evelena Stowe Quidley and the widow of the late William Edward Cullipher.

Mrs. Cullipher is survived by two daughters, Barbara C. Niedrauer and Rose C. Durose, both of Orlando, FL; a brother, Edward Quidley of Buxton, NC; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Lighthouse Assembly of God, Buxton, NC on Thursday, September 2, 2004 at 1:00 pm with Rev. David Waterfield officiating. Burial will follow in the Family Cemetery in Buxton. The family will receive friends at the church on Wednesday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.

James Lupton, Jr.

James Edward Lupton, Jr., 51 of 123 Macedonia Church Road, Poplar Branch, NC died Sunday, August 29, 2004, at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC. Mr. Lupton was the son of the late James Edward and Mildred Lewark Lupton and the husband of Cathy Simpson Lupton. He was employed with Narrows Island Club and attended the Poplar Branch Baptist Church.

Besides his wife, Mr. Lupton is survived by a daughter, Kelly Lupton of Virginia Beach, VA; and one sister, Opal Beasley of Collington, NC.

Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, September 2, 2004, at 2:00pm in Laurel Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Poplar Branch, NC by Rev. Bill Thorn. Marion E. “Buddy” Lowry

MARION EDWARD ‘BUDDY’ LOWRY, 61, of Kill Devil Hills, NC died Saturday, August 28, 2004, in Kill Devil Hills. Buddy was born in Weeksville, NC and was owner of Lowry Insurance Company, an independent sales associate exclusively for AFLAC. He was a member of Salem Baptist Church until confirmed on March 17, 1994, into the Episcopal Church. He was a member of St. Andrews by the Sea Episcopal Church, where he was a loyal member of the Vestry, a member of Cursillo, Men’s Interdenominational Fellowship of the Outer Banks, Episcopal Missionary Candidate with his wife, Susan, of the South American Missionary Society, past member of the Weeksville Lions Club, North Beach Rotary Club, Rotarian of the year 1992, past numerous services in the Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce, Head of the Advisory Council of the N.C. Aquarium in Manteo for the past 20 years, and was a member of the first graduating class of the College of the Albemarle. He was formerly employed with East Carolina Bank in 1979, after relocating from Elizabeth City, where he worked, briefly, in banking. He was a former resident of Edenton from 1992 ’1994 and was employed with Colony Tire Corp and became associated with AFLAC in January of 1994, and has been a dedicated representative in Dare County since then, loving his ministry of serving those who were in need.

Buddy had an outgoing spirit and never met a stranger. He loved so many people he knew and didn’t know.

He was the son of Annie Pendleton Lowry of Nixonton and the late Marion Kendrick Lowry who died in 1972. Besides his mother, Buddy is survived by his wife, Susan Blount Lowry and his mother-in-law, Dottie Blount of Point Pleasant, NJ. Other survivors include a son, Kent Lowry and wife, Cindy and their children, Ashton and Cade of Weeksville, NC, a daughter, Darlene Jones and husband, Jim and their children, Kiley and Kayla of Belvidere, NC, a step-son, Christian Powers and wife, Selina and their children, Alina, Kristin and Christian, Jr., step-son, Ricky Powers, all of Kill Devil Hills, NC, a sister, Judy Mansfield of Carthage, NC; three brothers, John Henry Lowry of Nixonton, David Pete Lowry of Weeksville and Clay Lowry of Raleigh; and numerous nieces and nephews, as well as grand-nieces and nephews and many honorary grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Andrews by the Sea Episcopal Church on Wednesday, September 1, 2004 at 3:00 pm with the Rev. Charles E.B. Gill officiating. A reception will be held immediately following the service. Friends may also join the family at Twiford’s Funeral Home, Manteo, on Tuesday evening from 5:00 to 9:00 pm. Charles Workman

Charles Benjamin Workman, age 74, of 816 Griffin Swamp Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, August 28, 2004, at the Albemarle Hospital. Born in Summit County, Ohio, he was the son of the late Charles Franklin and Losie Downey Workman, and husband of Meta Kirkpatrick Workman of the residence. Mr. Workman was retired as an inspector of the Ford Motor Company, and attended Faith Baptist Church in Elizabeth City. He was a member of the VFW in North Ridgeville, Ohio, Dover Masonic Lodge # 489 AF & AM in Westlake, Ohio and held a Private Pilots License. He served in the US Air Force during World War II.

Besides his wife Mr. Workman is survived by: two daughters Robin Workman of Elizabeth City, NC, and Susan Metz of North Ridgeville, Ohio; four sons Todd Workman of Manteo, NC, John Workman of Buxton, NC, Eric Workman of Westlake, OH, and Dennis Workman of Kansas City, MO; one sister, Mary Etta Spear of Warrenton, MO; and one brother Larry Workman of Atlanta, GA; ten grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren. Besides his parents he was predeceased by seven brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, September 1, 2004 at 1:00pm in the chapel of Raiguel Funeral Home, 401 E. Main St., Harrisville, WV 26362-1207. A visitation will be held Tuesday evening at the funeral home from 6:00 until 9:00pm and on Wednesday from 9:00am until funeral time. Burial will follow in the Alice Cemetery, Cox’s Mills, WV. Robert Swartz

Robert ‘Bob’ Leroy Swartz, 90, of 324 Planter’s Run Elizabeth City, NC, and Hatteras, NC, died Thursday August 26, 2004, at his residence in Elizabeth City. He was owner of Swartz Fisheries Inc, in the Hatteras community and sold commercial fishing supplies. He was born January 20, 1914, in Bellevue, Ohio, and was the son of the late Calvin and Nettie Hartley Swartz. He was preceded in death by his wife Florence Bowen Swartz on November 28, 2003, and two sisters and one brother. Mr. Swartz was a graduate of York High School in Bellevue, Ohio, a charter member of the Ohio Fisherman Association and Fur Buyers, a former member of the Oregon Inlet Commission, and member of the Cape Hatteras Baptist Church.

Survivors include; two sons James Swartz and his wife Beulah of Port Clinton, Ohio and Thomas L. Swartz of Port Richie, Florida, two step-daughters, Mary Nannette Zepp of Newport News, Virginia Delores Ann Belvin of New Port Richie, Florida, and three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted Monday August 30, 2004, at 10:00 A. M. at the Cape Hatteras Baptist Church with Pastor John D. Cullop officiating. A graveside services will be held Monday at 3:00 P. M. at Laurel Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Poplar Branch, NC.

The family will receive friends Sunday August 29, 2004, from
3:00 P. M. to 5:00 P. M. and 6:30 P. M. to 8:00 P. M. at the Cape Hatteras Baptist Church, and immediately following the funeral service Monday morning at the church.

WILLIAM THOMAS ‘BILLY’ BEACHAM, III, 71, of Kitty Hawk, NC, died Tuesday, August 24, 2004 in a Durham, NC hospital. Mr. Beacham, born in Amagansett, NY, was a retired Industrial Engineer of Boeing Aircraft Corp. and was a Baptist. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was the son of the late, William Thomas and Irma Partridge Beacham.

Mr. Beacham is survived by four daughters, Cathy Dandelakis of Marietta, GA, Patti Coxwell of Meridian, MS, Barbara Mohler of Fair Hope, AL, and Laura Saul of Poulsbo, WA; a son, Thomas A. Beacham of Kitty Hawk, NC; eight grandchildren; and his companion, Virginia Steinmetz.

A graveside service will be held in Austin Cemetery, Kitty Hawk, on Sunday, August 29, 2004 at 3:00 pm with Rev. Steve Siegrist officiating.

DALE KIRKLAND HARRIS, JR, 48, of Salvo, died, Tuesday, August 24, 2004, in Chesapeake, Va. Mr. Harris was born in Norfolk, Va and was affiliated with Clark’s-Bethel United Methodist Church.

He was the son of the late Dale Kirkland and Catherine Hooper Harris, Sr.

Surviving are a daughter; Kelsea Lynn Harris of Knotts Island and a son; Korey Dale Harris of New York, a sister; Catherine H. Gray of Buxton, maternal grandmother; Zenovah Hooper Gray of Salvo, aunt; Annette O’Neal, uncle; Johnny Hooper and wife Linda and family all of Salvo and two nieces; Cassie Gray and Krystal Hardison.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the graveside in the Hooper Cemetery in Salvo, Friday, August 27, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. by the Rev. Susie Fitch-Slater and Billy Rutledge . Friends may join the family at the residence 27211 Sand Street, Salvo, Thursday evening.

Janet Lynn Caudill McCaskill, 46, died Sunday, August 22, 2004, at her residence. She was born in Sparta, NC and was a retired mate on the Hobo Charter Fishing Boat. Mrs. McCaskill attended Wanchese Assembly of God and Manteo Baptist Church. She was the daughter of the late Clay Franklin Caudill and the late Pearl Upchurch Caudill and the wife of John Stephen McCaskill of the home.

Besides her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Mary Lorrain ‘Rainnie’ McCaskill of the home; four brothers, Timothy George Caudill of Nags Head, Phillip Cleave Caudill of Knotts Island, NC, Jerry Clay Caudill of Kings Mountain, NC and Dale Franklin Caudill of Boone; her in-laws, James T. and Mary C. Jones of Winston Salem.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Wanchese Assembly of God on Friday, August 27, 2004 at 3:00 PM with Dr. David Dalton officiating. Burial will take place in the Whitehead-Joines Cemetery in Sparta, NC. The family will receive friends at the church for a time of fellowship immediately following the service and at other times at the residence. Elijah’Eli’ Wayne Lewis, 54, died on Sunday, August 22, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Lewis was born in Eastville, VA. He was the son of the late Steve Davis Lewis and the late Helen Styron Lewis.

He is survived by one sister, Suzanne Lewis Durivage and husband, Jay of Exton, PA; two brothers, William Lewis of Ocracoke, Sammy Lewis of West Hollywood, CA; two nieces, Katie and Lori Lewis; three nephews, Jacob Davis Durivage, Kenneth and Tony Lewis. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Steve Davis Lewis, Jr. and a nephew, Ryan Durivage.

A memorial service will be held at the Ocracoke United Methodist Church on Wednesday, August 25, 2004 at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Ocracoke Health Center and Ocracoke EMS, P.O. Box 543, Ocracoke, NC 27960.
