Minnie Lee Smith Nixon, 83, died Wednesday, September 29, 2004 at her residence. Mrs. Nixon was born in Hertford and was a retired beauty shop owner. She was a member of Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church, Order of The Eastern Star #79 and Order of The Amaranth Coastal Court #12. Mrs. Nixon was the daughter of the late Percy Lee Smith and the late Lillian Thompson Smith and the widow of Ralph Medford Nixon.
She is survived by two sisters, Eula S. Perry of Elizabeth City and Susie S. Beasley of Grandy; several nieces and nephews; she was preceded in death by her only daughter, Lillian ‘Dolly’ Weatherburn; one brother, Carlton P. Smith and two grandchildren, Michelle and Bradford Weatherburn.
A Celebration of Life with Order of Eastern Star Rites will be held at the Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church on Saturday, October 2, 2004 at 1:00 PM with Rev. Richard Stone officiating. Burial will take place at Powells Point Christian Church Cemetery in Harbinger. The family will be at the home of Mrs. Nixon at 8929 Caratoke Highway, Point Harbor.

Johnnie Floyd Harrell
Native of Perquimans County
Johnnie Floyd Harrell, age 77, of 624 Body Road, Hertford, NC, died Wednesday, September 29, 2004, at his residence. Mr. Harrell, a native of Perquimans County was the widower of Mary Elizabeth Dail Harrell and the son of the late Johnnie Harrell and Janie Stallings Harrell. He was a salesman for Albemarle Distributor and a Pentecostal.
He is survived by three daughters, Jan Sawyer and Gloria Roughton both of Hertford, NC, and Virginia Figgins of Raleigh, NC; four sons, Larry Harrell, Wayne Harrell, Douglas Harrell, and Darrell Harrell all of Hertford, NC; three sisters, Evelyn Ferguson of Indio, CA, Linda Phillips of Kalam, WA, and Shirley Cox of Hertford, NC; thirteen grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; and fourteen great great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Katherine H. Allen.
Funeral services will be Friday, October 1, 2004 at 11:00 AM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Ismael Melendez officiating. Burial will follow in Harrell Family Cemetery. Gary Steven Hume, 50, of Kitty Hawk, NC, died Tuesday, September 28, 2004 at an Elizabeth City nursing home. Mr. Hume was born in Warrenton, VA and was a retired carpet layer. He was the son of Mary Ellen Leach Hume of Warrenton, VA and the late William Richard Hume.
Besides his mother, Mr. Hume is survived by one daughter, Stephanie Woodley of Fort Edwards Air Force Base, CA; one son, Jonas Hume of Warrenton, VA; one sister, Patty Webb of Kitty Hawk, NC; one brother, Tim Hume of Louisa, VA and three grandchildren.

Donald B. MacIntyre

Donald B. MacIntyre, 88, passed away September 27th. Born March 22, 1916 in Pittsburgh, Pa, the son of the late Peter and Greta MacIntyre.
Mr. MacIntyre was a Shriner and a member of Toastmasters International, a member of the Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church and served in various community oriented services for the Town of Kill Devil Hills. He was a retired manager/industrial salesman for Harnischifeger.
Survivors include his widow Henrietta, sons Doug MacIntyre and wife Judy of Wickenburg, Arizona, Bruce MacIntyre and wife Donna of Clearwater Beach, Florida and Russell MacIntyre and wife Janie of Rocky Mount, N.C., grandchildren, Leslie Shannon, Lori MacIntyre, JR MacIntyre and wife Griselda, Kasey Meyer and husband Bill, Amanda MacIntyre and Scott ManIntyre, great-grandchildren, Austin, Hunter and Lily, his brother William MacIntyre and sister Helen Fischer. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Twiford Funeral Home Manteo.

Eugene ‘Gene’ William Lynch, age 72, of 118 South Spot Road, Powells Point, NC, died Sunday, September 26, 2004, at his residence. He was a native of Bronx, NY, and was the son of the late Edward Lynch and Mary Quinn Lynch.
Mr. Lynch had been a resident of the Powells Point community since 1994, and was a retired carpenter with the State of New York.
Survivors include his wife; Eileen Ann Farrell Lynch; three sons, Gene Lynch and his wife Wendi of Lake Carmel, NY, Edward Lynch and his wife Tensy of Croton on the Hudson, NY, James Lynch and his wife Lauren of Spring, TX.; and eight grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one sister, Winifred Lynch Moloney.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday September 29, 2004, at
1:30 P. M. at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 301 West Kitty Hawk Road, Kitty Hawk, NC, 27949, with Deacon Don Wobser officiating.

BEVERLY S. RIGGS VUCINOVIC, 69, of Kitty Hawk, died, Friday, September 24, 2004, in her residence. Mrs. Vucinovic was born in Steubenville, Ohio and was a retired Registered Nurse.
Mrs. Vucinovic was a member of Wellsburg United Methodist Church in West Virginia, Presbyterian-University Hospital Nurses Alumni Association, former owner of Dip & Deli, Ivey’s Beachwear and a former member of Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce.
She was the daughter of the late Brent and Frances Bee Riggs and the wife of John J. Vucinovic.
Besides her husband surviving are a daughter; Dee-Ann Baum and a son; Brent B. Vucinovic both of Kitty Hawk, a brother; William Riggs of Wellsburg, WV and two grandchildren; Melissa and Gabriel Ciccolella. Mrs. Vucinovic was pre-deceased by her daughter; Kimberly Lee Vucinovic Ciccolella.

Chesapeake ‘ Joel Oscar Thompson, 72 died September 23, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Thompson was worn in Bladen County, NC to the late James Montgomery and Illa Jane Davis Thompson. He was a veteran having served in the US Army and had worked as a supervisor for Virginia Chemical.
Survivors include his son, Richard Paul Rush of Chesapeake; five sisters, Dorothy Thompson of Charlotte Count House, VA, Cailie Manning of Tampa, FL, Betty Freedman of Portsmouth,, Alice Malbone of Chesapeake, and Jeanie Mitchell and husband Bill of Chesapeake; a sister in law, Marlene Thompson of Suffolk; two brothers, David Thompson and wife Jeannie of Suffolk and Robert Thompson and wife Barbara of Salem, VA; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held on Sunday at 2:30 pm at Covenant UMC, 2004 Dock Landing Rd., Chesapeake, with a reception immediately following in the social hall.

Frances Jean Border
Chesapeake ‘ Frances Jean Border, 73, died September 25, 2004 at Chesapeake General Hospital. Mrs. Border was born in Giles, W.V. to the late Roy Virgil and Bertie Alice Spaulding Adkins. She was an avid Golfer and Tennis player at Greenbrier Country Club.
Survivors include her husband, George Freer Border; three sons, Gary Lee Border and wife Julie Ann of Atlanta, GA, Grieg Freer Border and wife Rita Dawn of Wilmington, NC, and Joe Joe Border and wife Debrah of Chesapeake, VA; one brother, Jack Donald Adkins of Ohley, W.V.; six grandchildren, Christopher, Scott, Candice, Shaun, Jennifer, and Jamison; and one great grandchild, Camron.
The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake on Tue from 6:30 pm until 8:00 pm and on Wednesday at 11:30 am with a service of remembrance immediately following. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to a charity of ones choice.

Horace Simpson

Horace Lawrence Simpson, Sr., age 85 of 278 Baxter Lane, Moyock, NC, died September 26, 2004, in the Outer Banks Hospital, Nags Head, NC. He was a native of Currituck County, NC, and was son of the late George Vanslack Simpson and Mary Alice Smith Simpson. He was the husband of Lottie ‘Peggy’ Bateman Simpson. He worked as an electrician for the Civil Service, and served in the US Coast Guard. He was retired president for the Portsmouth County Anglers Club, and a member of River City Sam’s Campers Club.
Besides his wife he is survived by one son, Horace Lawrence Simpson Jr., and his wife Lynette of High Point, NC, eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was predeceased by one son, George Simpson, four sisters, and five brothers.
A memorial service will be Thursday, September 30, 2004, at 4:00 PM, in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service. Reggie Ballance

Reginald ‘Reggie’ Ballance, 56, died Saturday, September 25, 2004 at Britthaven Nursing Home in Nags Head. Mr. Ballance was born in New Bern, NC and lived most of his life on Ocracoke Island. He was a member of the Ocracoke United Methodist Church and served many years on the polls for the Hyde County Board of Elections and was retired from the National Park Service Maintenance Department. Mr. Ballance was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army. He was the son of the late Elisha Everett Ballance and the late Mildred Amber Hardison Ballance.
He is survived by one sister, Lynette Waller and husband Ray Thomas of Ocracoke; one brother, Gene Ballance and wife, Cheryl of Ocracoke; a sister-in-law, Sharon Ballance of Ocracoke; he was preceded in death by a brother, David Ballance.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Ocracoke United Methodist Church on Tuesday, September 28th, 2004 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Joyce Reynolds officiating. Burial will take place in the Ballance Family Cemetery in Ocracoke. A Visitation will be held at the church Monday, September 27th from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM.
