Paul Glenn Miller, Jr., age 70, formerly of Chesapeake, VA, died at his residence, 9009 Pageland Court, Wake Forest, NC, Monday, November 29, 2004. He was a native of Elizabeth City, NC, and was the son of the late Paul Glenn Miller, Sr., and Edna Palmer Miller. He was the husband of Earlene Culipher Miller of the residence. Mr. Miller was retired from Ferguson Enterprises, Virginia Beach, and was a member of the Poquoson Masonic Lodge #49 A.F. & A.M.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Joy D. Powell and her husband, Joey of Wake Forest, NC; one son, Earl G. Miller and his wife Charlotte of Mechanicsville, VA; one sister, Garnet Harper of Wendell NC; one sister in law, Anita Miller of Moyock, NC; one granddaughter, Erin Miller; three grandsons, Cameron Miller, Scott Gregory, and Thomas Powell. He was predeceased by one brother, William F. Miller.

Graveside service will be Thursday, December 2, 2004, at 2:30 PM in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Mike Owney officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday afternoon from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Northside Chapel, 1115 North Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC. Margarete Roberts Kise, age 89, of 112 Red Cedar Run Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Sunday, November 28, 2004 at her residence. She was a native of Idebell, OK, and was the daughter of the late Joseph Roberts and Carrie Davis Roberts. She was wife of the late Charles D. Kise. She spent 35 years in various capacities with the Civil Service in the White House.

She is survived by one daughter, Gayle Houston and her husband, Tony of Corolla, NC; one sister, Helen Lee of Tishomingo, OK; two grandchildren, two step grandchildren, and three step great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be Thursday, December 2, 2004, at 4:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC. Julian Russell Cartwright, age 63, of 3099 West Main Street Extended, Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, November 29, 2004, at his residence. Mr. Cartwright, a native of Pasquotank County, NC, was the son of the late Davis Warren Cartwright and Maggie Russell Cartwright. He was retired from Sprint Phone Company, and served in the U. S. Coast Guard Reserves. He was a member of Berea Baptist Church and a former deacon, Ereka Masonic Lodge # 317 AF&AM, Scottish Rite Bodies, Sudan Shrine Temple, charter member of the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public School Foundation and served as the Third President for two terms.

He is survived by a son, J. Russell Cartwright, Jr., and wife Dianna, of Winterville, NC; four sisters, Frances Roberts and Sylvia Roberts, both of Shawboro, NC, Betty Williams of Meiggs, GA, and Mildred Midgett of Chesapeake, VA; and two brothers, Davis Cartwright of Edenton, NC, and Eugene Cartwright of Chesapeake, VA. He was predeceased by two sisters, Lessie Ward and Ruth Bass.

Funeral services will be Thursday, December 2, 2004, at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Glenn Greenway and the Rev. Roger Stanley officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the funeral home. Dennis Ward

Dennis Wayne ‘Big Head’ Ward, 55, of 402 Country Club Road, Camden, NC, died Saturday November 27, 2004, at the Albemarle Hospital.

Mr. Ward was born August 27, 1949, in Pasquotank County and was the son of the late John Edward Ward and Elizabeth Cowell Ward.
He was a pipe fitter and commercial fisherman and was currently employed with Eagerton Plumbing Company. He attended the Pearl Street Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors include his wife; Cheryl Ann Wright Ward, two daughters Kimmy Ward and Dianna Mann both of Elizabeth City, NC, and one son Christopher ‘Chris’ Ward, Sr., of Elizabeth City, NC, two brothers Talmadge Ward of Coinjock, NC. and Don Ward, Sr., of Weeksville, NC, and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister and three brothers, and two grandchildren.

A funeral graveside service will be held Wednesday, December 1, 2004, at 11:30 A. M. at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Steve Strickland officiating.

Luther E. ‘Bud’ Lawrence

Luther E. ‘Bud’ Lawrence, age 76, 109 Bud Lane, Jarvisburg, NC, died Sunday, November 28, 2004 at Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Elizabeth City, NC, husband of Gwen Spruill Lawrence of the residence, and the son of the late James Luther and Mary Markham Lawrence. Mr. Lawrence was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church, where he sang in the church choir, Currituck Masonic Lodge #463 AF&AM, Sudan Shriners, Lions Club, and sang with the Sonshine Gang.

Besides his wife, Mr. Lawrence is survived by two daughters, Susan Charbonnet and husband Bill of Lafayette, LA, and Beverly Surman and partner Bebe Jordan of Jarvisburg, NC; a son James Preston Lawrence of Chicago, IL; four grandchildren, Will Charbonnet, Jr. and wife Jennifer, Robert L. Charbonnet, Stefanie Leigh Surman, and Dianne Renee Surman; a great granddaughter, Baker Elizabeth Charbonnet; a mother-in-law, Alice Spruill, and several aunts, nieces, nephews, and adopted family. Besides his parents, Mr. Lawrence was preceded in death by two sisters, Edith White and Audrey Whedbee.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, November 30, 2004 at 2:00 pm in Mount Zion United Methodist Church with the Rev. Glenn McCraine officiating. Burial will follow in Laurel Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 and at other times at the residence. W. L. “Mickey” Thompson

W. F. ‘Mickey’ Thompson, 87, of 1015 W. Colonial Ave., Elizabeth City, NC died Saturday, November 27, 2004, in the Winslow Memorial Home. He was born in the Weeksville section of Pasquotank County, NC to the late Wallace L. Thompson, former sheriff of Pasquotank County and Minnie Markham Thompson. Mickey was well known in his community. He was employed by Kramer Brothers Lumber Company, L. R. Foreman and Sons and Chesapeake Lumber Company as a procurement forester until his retirement in 1986. He also gave his time for community service; having been chairman of the Pasquotank County Commissioners and chairman of the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank County School Board, when the county and city schools consolidated and Northeastern High School was built. He was a member of the Board of Directors for Albemarle Savings and Loan, which later became B. B. & T. Mr. Thompson was a member of the American Legion, Ruritan Club and a member of City Road United Methodist Church. During World War II, Mickey served as a Lieutenant in the US Coast Guard/Navy in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters from 1941-1946. Mickey was also well known as a student-athlete at N. C. State University, where he participated in football, baseball and track. One of his track records remained unbroken for 27 years. Mickey was known as ‘Seabiscuit’ by his track associates. Mr. Thompson was voted the Most Athletic member of his 1941 graduating class. He always had a smile for everyone he met and was admired and appreciated by all.

Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jane Kramer Thompson, two daughters, Isabelle Thompson of Auburn, AL and Susan Thompson and husband Ricky Morgan, of Corapeake, NC; two sisters, Minnie Thompson Long and Gertrude Thompson Kastner and husband, Eddie, all of Chapel Hill, NC. He was also survived by two grandsons, Frank Thompson Werner and Mickey Thompson Morgan, and a loving and dependable caregiver, Martin Butts, who attended to his needs during his long illness. Besides his parents, Mr. Thompson was preceded in death by his brother, ‘Pete’ Thompson.
Graveside services will be conducted Tuesday, November 30, 2004, at 11:00am in the Old Hollywood Cemetery by Bishop Hope Ward and Rev. Charles McKenzie. Ruth Emery

Ruth Wilson Reid Emery, of Brunswick, died on her 86th birthday,
November 26, 2004 at the home of her son in Brunswick. A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Mrs. Emery grew up in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. She had made her home in Brunswick for the past two years, moving from Dawson, Georgia. Mrs. Emery was a graduate of Duke
University, earning her nursing degree. She then earned her certification
as a Registered Nurse Anesthetist and had a distinguished career of 50
years, retiring from Orange Memorial Hospital in Orlando, Florida. Mrs.
Emery was a member of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists.
Mrs. Emery earned her World Class Sailing Status at the National Moth
Boat Regatta in Elizabeth City, N.C., as well as many other sailing awards.
She was an avid bridge player, an accomplished pianist and was trilingual.
Her greatest strength was her lifelong compassionate commitment to serving
people. She was a member of Taylors United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her son, Rev. James R. Emery (Marsha), Brunswick; a
daughter, Bonnie Lynn Eslinger (Gary), Eau Claire, Wisconsin; a sister,
Marjorie Rowe (Richard), Elizabeth City, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Dawn M. Thorne, Spring, Texas, James R. Emery, Jr., LaGrange, Georgia, Rev. Micah J. Emery, Hawkinsville, Ga., Christa S. Arrington, Matthews, Georgia, Sarah E. Eslinger, Chelsea A. Eslinger and Mattie L. Eslinger, all of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; eight great grandchildren.
The funeral service will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday at Taylors United
Methodist Church with Rev. James R. Emery officiating. Mrs. Emery will lie in state in the church one hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends at the church following the funeral.
Another service will be 2:00 P.M. Monday, November 29, 2004, at First United Methodist Church in Elizabeth City, N.C., with Rev. James R. Emery and Rev. T.R. Miller officiating. Burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery.

Mrs. Helen Houlthouser Tadlock, age 70, of 1000 Bartlett Avenue, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, November 24, 2004, in Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Tadlock, a native of Sparta, NC, was the daughter of the late Lindsey Thomas Houlthouser and Margaret Anderson Houlthouser, and the widow of Roy Linwood Tadlock. She was a member of New Life Assembly of God.

Mrs. Tadlock is survived by one daughter, Kimberly Hunter of Elizabeth City, NC; one sister, Judy H. May of Durham, NC; four grandchildren, Corrine Tadlock, Tamara Tadlock, Travis Tadlock, and Tracy Tadlock; and a special friend, Tammy Walston of Elizabeth City, NC. She was predeceased by a son, Randy Tadlock.

Harvey Ferrell, age 87, of 673 Okisko Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday, November 25, 2004, at his residence. Mr. Ferrell, a native of Perqui- mans County, was the widower of Hazel Bundy Ferrell and the son of the late Octavis David Ferrell and Annie Davis Ferrell. He was a retired foreman with the NC Department of Bridges and a US Army Veteran of WW II.

Mr. Ferrell is survived by two sons, Joe Harvey Ferrell and Allen Octavis Ferrell, both of Hertford, NC; a step-daughter, Marie Bundy Ferrell of Hertford, NC; a step-son, David C. Bundy of Elizabeth City, NC; two grand children; four great grandchildren; and a longstanding companion, Susie Ferrell. He was predeceased by a step-son, Walter Lloyd Bundy.

Funeral services will be Sunday, November 28, 2004, at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Roland Cooper officiating. Chesapeake ‘ Winford Lee McDowell (Mac), 67, USN (Retired), Norfolk Naval Ship Yard Shop 67 Foreman (Retired), entered peacefully into rest November 19th. Loving husband of Michaelene B., beloved father of Christine Lee Armstrong caring Grandpa of Jeremie Koons, twins James Todd and Cassandra Ann. Brother-in-law of Dolores and David Van Schoor, uncle to Teal Justine, great uncle of Victoria Lee, closest cousins Betty and Bueron Skinner of Alabama, host of aunts and uncles and cousins of Cullman, Alabama. Mr. McDowell was a native of Cullman, Alabama and was the son of the late Emmett and Emma Brown McDowell. ‘Mac’ enjoyed going fishing at Northwest River Park. He was an avid NASCAR enthusiast. ‘Mac’ was a country music fan and loved especially to listen to Hank Williams. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 23, 2004 at 7:00 pm. A visitation will follow in the Twiford Colonial Chapel, 929 S. Battlefield Blvd, Chesapeake, VA.
