Thomas Fetty, Jr.

Thomas Carl Fetty, Jr., 49, a resident of Nags Head, NC, for 30 years, died. He was born in Fairmont, WV to the late Grace Fern Eby Sullivan. He is survived by his godfather Joseph Patrick Murphy and his godmother Marie Mary Murphy.

Tom Fetty is also survived by four sisters, Sharon Kyer of Fairmont, WV, Theresa Marie Berry of Mt. Clare, WV, Pamela Ann Hammond of Tega Cay, SC, and Cynthia Marie Murphy of Virginia Beach, VA; and two brothers, Patrick Joseph Murphy of Norfolk, VA and Michael John Murphy of Cork, Ireland.

A memorial service will be conducted by the family on Friday, January 2, 2004 at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

CHARLOTTE DAVIS STARNER, 92, of Manteo, died, Thursday, December 25, 2003,
in Nags Head. Mrs. Starner was born in Westminster, Maryland and was a retired grocer and Christian Scientist.

She was the daughter of the late Harry and Gertrude Hunter Davis and the wife of the late Calvin David Starner.

Surviving are one daughter; Patricia Fulk of Manteo, one son: Eugene David Starner of West Virginia, five grandchildren; Allen Starner, John Starner, David Starner, James Starner and Catherine Glass.

A service of remembrance will be held Saturday, January 3, 2004, at 3:30 p.m. in Twiford’s Colony Chapel. Twiford Funeral Home Manteo is assisting the Starner family.

James West

James Dennis West, 59, died Friday, December 26, 2003 at a Norfolk medical facility. Mr. West was born in Williamston, North Carolina and was raised in Edenton and for 25 years has been a resident of Manns Harbor. He was a Retired gunsmith and boat builder at Davis Yachts. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Mr. West was the son of Mrs. Lillie Mae West of Woodland, NC and the husband of Holly Smith West of the home. He was preceded in death by his father, Bernard Boston McCullough and his step-father, Steannie West.

Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by two daughters, Cathy Doreen West of Manteo and Carolyn Wainwright of Jacksonville, NC; two step-daughters, Spring Weight of Pittsburgh, PA and Heather Gardiner of Manteo; one sister, Joyce Sawyer and husband, Seaton of Woodland, NC; five grandsons, Richard, Cameron, Daniel, Chase and Taylor; several nieces and nephews and his beloved cats, Furr and Mattie.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Nags Head on Monday, December 29, 2003 at 6:00 PM with President Jeff Jacobson officiating. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 4601 Six Forks Road, Suite 500, Raleigh, NC 27609. Ollie Hux

Ollie Keeter Hux, 90, of Nags Head, NC died, Tuesday, December 28, 2004 in Britthaven of Outer Banks. Mrs. Hux was born in Halifax County, NC and was a retired weaver for J.P. Stevens and Company.

She was the daughter of the late Edward and Mamie Cushing Keeter and the wife of the late Bernard Carlton Hux.

Mrs. Hux is survived by one son, Donald C. Hux, Sr and wife Arline of Manns Harbor, NC; two grandchildren, Don Hux, Jr. of Washington, NC and William ‘Bill’ Hux of Roanoke Rapids, NC; five great grandchildren, Travis Hux, Tyler Hux and Tanner Hux all of Manns Harbor, NC and Trey Hux and Will Wilkins both of Washington, NC; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Hux was predeceased by her six sisters and four brothers.

A celebration of life will be held at Wrenn Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids, NC, Friday, December 31, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. by the Rev. Sue Owens with burial in Cedarwood Cemetery, Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Friends may join the family at Wrenn Funeral Home for a time of visitation one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Salvation Army.

Steven Paul Rainwater, 42, of 136 Peachtree St., Jarvisburg, NC, died Tuesday, December 28, 2004, in the Pitt Memorial Hospital. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and was a self-employed roofer. Mr. Rainwater was the son of Paul Lee Rainwater of Scottsville, Kentucky and the late Glenda Kaye Burton Rainwater. He was a member of the Jarvisburg Church of Christ.

Besides his father, Mr. Rainwater is survived by four sons, Christopher Lee Rainwater, Daniel Paul Rainwater, Steven Ryan Rainwater, and Shawn James Rainwater all of Jarvisburg, NC; two sisters, Paige Denise Evans and Michelle Lea Stone both of Jarvisburg, NC. He is also survived by his fianc, Victoria Louise Gray of Jarvisburg, NC

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, December 30, 2004, at 11:00am in the Jarvisburg Church of Christ by Minister Dennis Crehan. The family will receive friends and relatives at the church immediately following the service and at other times at their residence, 136 Peachtree St., Jarvisburg, NC. Alfred “A. C.” Shannonhouse

Alfred Carver ‘A.C.’ Shannonhouse, 91, formerly of the 105 South Griffin St., Elizabeth City, NC died Sunday, December 28, 2003, in a Charlotte NC nursing home. He was born in Perquimans County, NC to the late James Watson and Ella Goodman Shannonhouse and was the widower of the late Hannah Stephens Shannonhouse. Mr. Shannonhouse was retired from the Elizabeth City U.S. Coast Guard Air Station as an electrician and was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Mr. Shannonhouse is survived by a daughter, Gail S. Buckley and husband Dr. Thomas Buckley of Charlotte, NC; a son, James S. ‘Jim’ Shannonhouse and wife Sandra of Arlington, TX; seven grandchildren, Ed, Teresa, Kelly, Neil, Mike, Lori and Denisse; and nine great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, December 30, 2003 at 1:00pm at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Clyde Denny officiating. The family will receive friends at the Twiford Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC Monday evening from 7:00 until 8:30. Grey Griggs

GREY SMITH GRIGGS, 78, of Southern Shores, died, Sunday, December 28, 2003, in Elizabeth City. Mrs. Griggs was born in Winnsboro, S.C. and was a retired teacher with Camden County Public Schools. She was a member of Duck United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Griggs was the daughter of the late William Rogers and Zulee Funderburke Smith and the wife of the late Brantley E. Griggs, Sr.

Surviving are two daughters; Jane Hand Moseley of Southern Shores and Cynthia Grey Hand of Norfolk and her step-daughter; Elsie Griggs Pugh of Camden, two grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and three great step-grandchildren.

A service of remembrance will be held Tuesday, December 30, 2003, at 3:00 p.m. in Duck United Methodist Church by the Rev. David Clift. A Private burial will be held in Powells Point Christian Church Cemetery. Twiford’s Colony Chapel Manteo is assisting the Griggs family.

John Mahaffey

John William Mahaffey, age 87, of 705 North Martin Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, December 28, 2004, at his residence. He was a native of Ohio, son of the late Warren D. Mahaffey and Gertrude Romaine Mahaffey, and was husband of the late Lena Garrett Mahaffey. He served in the US Navy and was retired from the NC Telephone and Telegraph Company. Mr. Mahaffey attended Pearl Street Pentecostal Holiness Church, and was a member of the Eureka Masonic Lodge # 317 AF & AM, Scottish Rite Bodies of New Bern, NC and Sudan Shriners.

He is survived by two sons, Dr. Charles E. Mahaffey of Elizabeth City, NC, and John W. Mahaffey, II of New Port News, VA; three sisters, Pearl ‘Peg’ Adams Vazquez, Mildred Ford and Junie Murphy all of Toledo, OH; one brother, Clark Mahaffey of Edmonds, WA; four grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be Friday, December 31, 2004 in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Jim McGee officiating. Burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery with Masonic Rites. The family will receive friends Thursday evening at the funeral home 7:00 PM till 8:00 PM. At other times the family will be at the residence of Dr. Charles E.
