JOSEPH (JOE) EDWARD PORTER, 73, of Grandy, went to be with his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, Sunday, February 27, 2005, in his residence. Mr. Porter was born in Norfolk, Va and was a retired lead aircraft inspector with U.S. Airways. He was a member of the Outer Banks Worship Center of the Assemblies of God, Goose Creek Golf and Country Club and a graduate of Granby High School where he lettered in four sports and senior chorus. Mr. Porter also served his country honorably in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

He was predeceased by his parents Joseph Edward and Hilda May Rudiger Porter and was the husband of Barbara Lee Dorn Porter of the home.

Besides his wife surviving are two daughters: Deborah Leigh Johns of Venetia, Pa and Sherry Lynn Smith of Crafton, Pa; grandchildren: Eric Smith, Wendy Smith Evens and husband Davy, Jackie Smith and Sarah Johns, uncles: Burnley Rudiger and Fred Rudiger and many cousins.
A celebration of life will be held, Thursday, March 3, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. in the Outer Banks Worship Center by the Rev. Jim Lewis. Burial will be in the Southern Shores Cemetery. Friends may join the family at Twiford Funeral Home, Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Outer Banks Worship Center c/o children’s and youth ministries, P.O. Ellen Cartwright Snow, 93, 8003 Caratoke Highway, Powells Point, NC died Friday, February 25, 2005, in the Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Weeksville, NC to the late Henry Martin and Berlie Byrd Cartwright and was the widow of the late Julian Dexter Snow. Mrs. Snow was a member of the Powells Point Christian Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Faye Shaver of Birmingham, AL; a brother Shelton Cartwright of Boykins, VA; four grandchildren, Michelle Sabre, Jennifer Shaver, Paul Adams, and Charles Cook, IV and three great grandchildren, Alexander Sabre, Brandon Sabre and Ethan Sabre.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at 11:00 in the Powells Point Christian Church by Pastor David Coxson. Burial will follow in the Powells Point Christian Church Cemetery. Mrs. Billie Madge Kirk Blisard, age 75, of 145 South Keller Lane, Grandy, NC, died Thursday, February 24, 2005, at her residence. Mrs. Blisard, a native of Boone County, WV, was the daughter of the late Robert Reed Kirk and Ica Dora Hendricks Kirk and the wife of John Floyd Blisard of the residence. She was a homemaker and a member of Poplar Branch Baptist Church.

Besides her husband she is survived by a daughter, Cathy Crum of Union, WV; a son, John Robert Blisard of Elkview, WV; a brother, Robert Kirk of Union, WV; four grandchildren, Bud Kirk Samples of Moorehead City, NC; Angela Dora Crum a student at Marshall University, Jake Blisard of Texas, and Lisa Collins of Baltimore, MD; and three great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be Monday, February 28, 2005, at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Ben Baum. Burial will follow in Powell’s Point Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the funeral home lobby immediately following the service. Anna Brabble Arcement, age 92, of Barco, NC, died February 25, 2005, in Sentara Nursing Home. She was a native of Currituck County, NC, daughter of the late Edward E. Brabble, and Annie Poole Brabble. She was wife of the late Murray John Arcement.

She is survived by one daughter, Ida Newbern Cooper of Barco, NC; one sister, Esther B. Snowden of Bells Island, NC; two grandchildren, Leslie Newbern of Barco, NC, and Lee Ann Evans of Kitty Hawk, NC; three great grandchildren.

Patricia Lynne Austin, age 45, of 150 Etheridge Road 27B, Manteo, NC, died Thursday, February 24, 2005 in Chesapeake General Hospital. She was a native of Pasquotank County, NC, daughter of Gene Austin, and Shirley Justus Austin of Elizabeth City, NC.

Besides her parents she is survived by one daughter, Kimberly Jean Lundine of Manteo, NC, and one son, Michael Justus Lundine, also of Manteo, NC; two sisters, Cathy Buchannan of Elizabeth City, NC, and Jennifer Dickenson of Aydlett, NC.

A memorial service will be Sunday, February 27, 2005 in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel at 3:30 PM with Bobbie Henley officiating. Nina James Yost, age 78, of 1300 Crescent Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, February 22, 2005 at Norfolk General Hospital. She was a native of Pasquotank County, NC, daughter of the late Calvin B. James, and Lucy Casey James, and was wife of the late Robert Frank Yost. She was owner and operator of Nina’s Fabric Barn, a member of the First United Methodist Church, Fleet Reserve Association, CPOA, and worked with the Special Olympics for fifteen years.

She is survived by one daughter, Lucy Carol Yost of Elizabeth City, NC, special cousins, Carolyn and Delbert Creef, and special friend Mary Harris

in the Veterans Section of West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. David Turner officiating. SUSAN LUHRING DAVIS, 82, passed away February 21, 2005 after a long illness at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Virginia Beach, VA. Susan was born Reidun Sunniva Bolstad in Hamar, Norway on Dec 11, 1922. She came to the United States in 1949 and lived her life in Norfolk, VA and the Outer Banks of NC.

She is survived by her husband, Warren B. Davis of Southern Shores, NC and two sisters, Ruth Bolstad of Norfolk, VA and Birga Neraker of Raelinger, Norway. Susan was married to the late Lawrence R. Luhring in 1950, now deceased and had four children: Dolly Whittington and husband Robert of Carolina Beach, NC, Karen Kunzmann and husband Thomas of Clayton, NC, Lawrence Luhring, Jr. and wife Leslie Alexander of Brooklyn, NY, and Steven H. Luhring and wife Lorrie of Hampstead, NC; and seven grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her parents Inga and Hilmar Bolstad and a brother Kaare Bolstad of Strummen, Norway.

Susan was an accomplished cross-country skier and also obtained her solo pilot’s license. She will be remembered for her wit, good cooking and joi de vivre.

A memorial service will be held Friday, February 25, 2005 at Outer Banks Presbyterian Church at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Parkinson Association or Our Lady of Perputual Help, 4560 Princess Anne Rd, Virginia Beach, VA. JEAN DAVIS BRALEY, 77, of Kill Devil Hills, NC, died Sunday, February 20, 2005 in a Chesapeake, Va. hospital. Mrs. Braley, born in Saco, ME, was a graduate of Thornton Academy in Saco, ME and was a homemaker. She was the daughter of the late Leonard and Elsie Emery Davis and the widow of the late Karl L. Braley, Sr. She was also preceded in death by a son, Steven Emery Braley.

Mrs. Braley is survived by a daughter, Carol Bancroft of Kill Devil Hills, NC; six sons, Karl L. Braley, Jr. of Kill Devil Hills, NC, Craig A. Braley of Hopkinton, MA, Mark Davis Braley of Richmond, VA, Glen M. Braley of Kitty Hawk, NC, Peter A. Braley of Prince William, VA, and Edward R. Braley of Culpeper, VA; fourteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
