Hilda Inez Payne, 73, died Monday, March 28, 2005 at a Nags Head medical facility. Mrs. Payne was born in Rodanthe and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Salvo Assembly of God Church. Mrs. Payne was the daughter of the late Nancy Pugh Austin and the widow of the late Little Farrow Payne.
She is survived by one son, George Hale Payne of Manteo; two brothers, Alfred Pugh of Salvo and Wilton R. Pugh of Baltimore, MD; two nieces, Bonnie Kuklica of Virginia Beach, VA and Lynda Davis of Springfield, VA and a special cousin, Elsie Hooper of Salvo.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Salvo Assembly of God on Friday, April 1, 2005 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Susie Fitch-Slater officiating. Burial will take place in the Family Cemetery in Salvo. The family will receive friends at the church on Thursday, March 31, 2005 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM and at other times at the home of Elsie Hooper.

Wanda Miller Hooper
Wanda Miller Hooper, 84, formerly of Kitty Hawk, NC, died Sunday, March 27, 2005 in Sentara Nursing Home in Barco, NC. She was a native of St. Louis, MO, daughter of the late Thomas Waco Miller, Sr. and Ola Bradley Miller. She was wife of the late Elroy Jones Hooper, Jr., and a member of Christ Episcopal Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Carol H. Gaither of Wilmington, NC; two sons, Tom Hooper of Issaquah, WA, and Tim Hooper of Kitty Hawk, NC; three grandchildren, Timothy F. Hooper, Jr., Charles Thomas Hooper, and Kathryn Elizabeth Gaither. She was predeceased by one son, Elroy J. Hooper, III, and one brother, Thomas Waco Miller, Jr.
A graveside funeral service will be held Thursday, March 31, 2005, at 2:00 PM in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Josh T. MacKenzie officiating. The family will join receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:30 P. M. to 7:30 P.M. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC and other times at 4537 Sea Scape Drive, Kitty Hawk, NC. Charles Lemnios

Charles Lemnios, 58, died March 27, 2005 at the Outer Banks Hospital of colon cancer. He was well-known and loved by many people. His morals, diligence and warm nature made him a person to count on by his friends and co-workers. He and his wife Sherrie owned and operated ‘Something Fishy’ for the past nine years. The customers always asked for ‘that nice man.’ He was born on the island of Lesbos, Greece, but lived in Norfolk since he was two years old. He and his wife met right after they both moved here and were married for 18 years. He was a runner and completed three marathons.
Mr. Lemnios is survived by his wife, Sherrie Lemnios of the residence; two sons, Michael Lemnios of Greensboro, NC and Justin Lemnios of Annapolis, MD; a step-daughter, Ruby Sinreich of Chapel Hill, NC; three brothers, Jim Lemnios of Virginia Beach, VA, George Lemnios and Steve Lemnios both of Chesapeake, VA; and three grandchildren.
He will be greatly missed by all.
A celebrarion of life will be held at the home, 185 Holly Trail, Southern Shores, NC on Saturday, April 2, 2005 at 3:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Outer Banks Hospital.

Tullie Lee Layden, 93, of Elizabeth City, NC, died Sunday, March 27, 2005 at his residence. He was born in Pasquotank County, NC; son of the late Thomas L. Layden and Cora Felton Layden Miller and was the widower of Joyce Raper Layden. He was a television repair man for Sawyer’s House of Furniture and a member of First Christian Church.
Mr. Layden is survived by daughter, Katherine Louise Layden Brickhouse of Portsmouth, VA; two sons, Roy Leon Layden of Virginia Beach, VA, and John Tullie Layden of Winchester, VA; step-daughter, Karen Owen of Brevard, NC; a step-son, Ricky Manning of Sanford, NC; one sister, Elizabeth Ann McIntosh of Jacksonville, FL.; one brother, Johnny F. Layden of Calahand, FL; a sister-in-law, Marion Layden of Jacksonville, FL; 13 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.. Mr. Layden was preceded in death by two daughters, Doris Faye Layden White and Barbara Lou Layden Hunt and a son, Earl Lee Layden.

Beth Jones Kraft, 47, died Friday, March 25, 2005 at a medical facility in Newport News, VA. Mrs. Kraft was born in Omaha, NE and was a Teacher of Theatre Arts at First Flight High School in Kill Devil Hills, NC and Chair of the Fine Arts Department.
She was a 1981 graduate of Auburn University with a BFA in Theater Arts.
Mrs. Kraft was Chairman of The Lost Colony Alumni Committee and a Member of Actor’s Equity.
She was the daughter of the late Edward and Lema Perkins Jones and the wife of Lane Kraft of Manteo.
Besides her husband, she is survived by one brother, Scott Jones and his wife, Vickie.
A memorial service will be held at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church on Saturday, April 2, 2005 at 10:00 AM with Rev. Jerry Cribb officiating. Following the memorial service, a celebration and Pot Luck Reception will be held at the Lost Colony Building, Fort Raleigh, National Historic Park next to the Elizabethan Gardens. A tribute to Beth Jones Kraft will be held at the Waterside Theatre, Fort Raleigh National Park at 3:30 PM on Saturday April 2, 2005 following the reception. Charles Morris O’Neal, 83, died Sunday, March 27, 2005 at an Elizabeth City medical facility. Mr. O’Neal was born in Ocracoke and retired from the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers and the N.C.D.O.T. He was a member of Ocracoke United Methodist Church. Mr. O’Neal was the son of the late Charlie Minor and Maggie Simpson O’Neal and the husband of Lorena Ballance O’Neal of Ocracoke.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Lisa Caswell and husband Bill of Ocracoke; three grandsons, Aaron, Evin and Liam Caswell. He was preceded in death by one brother, George O’Neal.
A celebration of life will be held at Ocracoke United Methodist Church on Thursday, March 31, 2005 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Joyce Reynolds officiating. Burial will take place in the Ballance Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Wednesday, March 30, 2005 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Paula Deborah Kellman Jeidel, 98, of 3907 Caratoke Highway, Currituck, NC, died Monday, March 28, 2005 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Ukraine, Russia; daughter of the late Nathan and Anna Herzmann Kellman and the widow of Edgar Jerome Jeidel. She was a retired bookkeeper and was Jewish.
Mrs. Jeidel is survived by a daughter, Joyce Karen Jeidel of Aydlett, NC; and a brother, Abraham Kellman of New York. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Laura Nancy Jeidel.
A graveside memorial service will be held Thursday, March 31, 2005 at 2:00 pm in Roanoke Island Memorial Gardens with Rev. Glenn McCraine officiating. Mrs. Elizabeth Harris Cooper Winslow, age 90, of the 1300 block of West Main Street Extended, Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday, March 25, 2005 at the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Winslow, a native of Pasquotank County, was the daughter of the late Rueben S. Harris and Bessie Newby Harris, and was the widow of Shelton Lee Cooper and Arnold W. Winslow. She graduated from East Carolina University, was a retired elementary school teacher with the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank County Schools, a member of the Matoaca Council # 10 Degree of Pocahontas obtaining the rank of Great Pocahontas, The First Baptist Church, The Elizabeth City Woman’s Club, and The Retired Teacher’s Association.
Mrs. Winslow is survived by two step-daughters, Selma W. and husband Mather Hurdle of Elizabeth City, NC, and Anne W. Stultz of Norfolk, VA; five grandchildren, Deborah H. Cherry, Catherine S. Austin, Cheryl S. Madison, Ellen H. West, and A. Glenn Stultz; seven great grandchildren; and a nephew, Eddie Norris. She was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Harris, and a sister, Millicent H. Norris.

Johnny Sawyer, age 44, of 847 Simpson Ditch Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday, March 25, 2005 in the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Sawyer, a native of Pasquotank County, was the son of John Walter Sawyer Sr., of Elizabeth City, NC, and the late Sara Wright Sawyer, and the husband of Rhonda Byrum Sawyer of the residence. He was a service technician at Wood’s Service Center.
Besides his wife and father, he is survived by a daughter, Krystal Nicole Sawyer of the residence; and a brother, Terry Sawyer of Hertford, NC.

Wallace ‘Wally’ Gilbert Perry, age 65, of 620 Body Road, Hertford, NC, died Friday, March 25, 2005 in Albemarle Hospital. He was a native of Bertie County, NC, son of the late William Ruffin Perry and Elma Mae Etheridge. He was the husband of Addie Berry Perry of the residence. He served in the US Navy, worked as a salesman and was a member of Camden Church of Christ.
Besides his wife he is survived by one step-daughter, Cathy Ambrose and her husband Kevin of Hertford, NC; one step-son, Tommy Copeland of Hertford, NC; two sons, Wallace Perry, Jr. and Scott Perry both of MA; four sisters, Hazel Lahy and Betty Cookson both of Portsmouth, VA, Rhea Garrison of Huntsville, AL, and Viola Pulley of Hertford, NC; one brother, Wayne Perry of Mars, PA; seven grandchildren.
A funeral service will be Monday, March 28, 2005, at 1:00 PM in Camden Church of Christ with Al Radabaugh officiating. Burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery.
