John Carol Whitehead, age 56, of 13180 Langley Road, Bryanstown, MD, died Friday, July15, 2005 in Cheverly, MD. Mr. Whitehead, a native of Pasquotank County, NC, was the son of Louise Watson Whitehead of Elizabeth City, NC, and the late Walton Howell Whitehead. He was a retired US Air Force Computer Technician and was currently employed with the FAA in Washington, D.C.

Besides his mother he is survived by a daughter, Christina Whitehead, and her finance Joe Bellanti, and grandson, Eric Lamb, Jr., all of Baltimore, MD; two sisters, Janis Adams of Moyock, NC, and Dona Yunker of Elizabeth City, NC; one brother, Walton H. Whitehead of Hertford, NC; two nieces Kim Meads of Elizabeth City, NC and Lisa Y. White of Hertford, NC; three nephews, E. Carlton Adams of Chesapeake, VA, Steven Adams of Farmington, NM, and Paul Whitehead of Elizabeth City, NC.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 20, 2005 at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Glenn Greenway officiating at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel. Burial with full military honors will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and at other times at the residence of his sister, Dona Yunker, 1029 Simpson Ditch Road, Elizabeth City, NC.

Mary (Maggie) Lee

MARY MAGDALINE (MAGGIE) BERRY LEE, 91, of Manteo, died, Saturday, July 16, 2005, in Nags Head. Mrs. Lee was born in Engelhard and was a former waitress and a member of Roanoke Island Church of Christ.

She was the daughter of the late Matthew Ransom and Nancy Harris Berry and the wife of the late Maywood J. Lee, Sr.

Surviving are her son: Maywood J. Lee, Jr and wife Margaret, grandchildren: Charles Daniel Lee and Mary Elizabeth Lee all of Manteo and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held Tuesday, July 19, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. in Twiford’s Colony Chapel by the Rev. Stafford Berry and Rev. Ron Denham. Burial will be in Fulford Cemetery Engelhard. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Britthaven of the Outer Banks, 430 W. Health Center Drive, Nags Head, N.C. 27959.

Irma Foster

Irma Styron Foster, 88, died Thursday, July 28, 2005 at her residence. Mrs. Foster was born in Ocracoke and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Ocracoke Assembly of God and was the Sunday School Secretary and Treasurer for many years. Mrs. Foster was the daughter of the late William and Iola Midgette Styron and was the widow of Zion J. Foster.

She is survived by one nephew, Rhodes I. Styron, one great-nephew, Chris Styron, one great-niece, Darlene Styron Doshier and one great-great-nephew, Floyd Alan Doshier, all of Ocracoke.

A celebration of life will be held at the Ocracoke Assembly of God on Sunday, July 31, 2005 at 4:00 PM with Rev. Ronnie Midgett officiating. Burial will take place in the Family Cemetery in Ocracoke.

Richard Lane Litten, Sr.

Richard Lane Litten, Sr., age 64, at 513 Timothy Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday, July 28, 2005, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Litten, a native of Shenandoah, VA, was the son of the late Raymond Leonard Litten and Katherine Windel Litten and the husband of Mary Hasler Litten of the residence. He was a retired meat cutter for Safeway Groceries and a Witnesses.

Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Mary Kathleen Litten of Quicksburg, VA, and Julia Catherine Litten of Elizabeth City, NC; three sons, Richard L. Litten, Jr., and Richard Lane Litten, III, both of Elizabeth City, NC, and Raymond Edward Litten of Shawboro, NC; two sisters, Sandra Richards of Quicksburg, VA, and Barbara Wilson of Edinburgh, VA; a brother, Ivan Litten of Quicksburg, VA; and six grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Reno Lane Litten, and two brothers, Leroy Litten and Jimmie Litten.

Ada Mae “Mary” Wright Goodwin, 78, died Tuesday, July 26, 2005 at Norfolk General Hospital. Mrs. Goodwin was born in Jacksonville, FL and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. Mrs. Goodwin was the daughter of the late Lonnie E. and Ada Mae Houston Wright and the widow of Edward Lewis Goodwin.

She is survived by three daughters; Melody Demarest and Michelle Suri, both of NC and Melissa Alphonse of MN; six sons; Roby Goodwin and Danny Goodwin, both of NJ, Steve Goodwin of PA, David Goodwin of WA, Timmy Goodwin of CA and Chris Goodwin of NC; one sister, Gerri Preston of FL and fourteen grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo, on Friday, July 29th, 2005 at 2:00 PM with Father Bill Stickle officiating. Burial will take place in Nichols Cemetery in Nichols, NY. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM.

Emily Bielenica

In loving memory of EMILY M. RACZYNSKI BIELENICA, 85, of Kitty Hawk, who died, Monday, July 25, 2005, in Chesapeake, Va. Mrs. Bielenica was born in New York City and was a retired Production Operator with Ethicon in Somerville, NJ. She was a member of Holy Redeemer by the Sea Catholic Church, where she was active in volunteer work. She was also a volunteer at the Baum Senior Center and participated in the Senior Olympics.

She was the daughter of the late Felix and Victoria Raczynski and the wife of the late Edward J. Bielenica.

Mrs Bielenica is survived by a daughter, Geraldine Foure of Kitty Hawk; a son, Richard E. Bielenica of Hillsborough, NJ; four grandchildren, Sean Foure, Craig Foure, Dawn Bielenica and Deanna Bielenica; and a great-grandchild, Sierra Leigh.

A funeral mass will be held at Holy Redeemer by the Sea Catholic Church, Friday, July 29, 2005, at 9:00 a.m. with Father Bill Walsh officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Hillsborough, NJ. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Funeral Home, Manteo, on Thursday, July 28th from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Martha Rountree Moss Paskewich, age 81, of 35 Timmerman Drive,
Elizabeth City, NC, died Sunday, July 24, 2005, in Albemarle Hospital. She was a native of Nash County, NC, daughter of the late Otway Binns Moss and Dollie Edwards Moss. She worked as secretary for the State Land Office, Land Grant Office, and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

She is survived by two daughters, Jo Ann Corbin of Va. Beach, VA, and Patsy Ball of Dunn, NC; one brother, William ‘Reg’ Moss and sister in law, Annette Wright Moss and family of Elizabeth City, NC; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Also by her Sister-in-law Twila Poole Moss, wife of her deceased bother, Otway Binss Moss and family of Zebulon, NC.

A funeral service will be Wednesday, July 27, 2005, at 11:00 AM in Twiford’s Northside Chapel, Elizabeth City, NC, with Bishop David L. Pritchard officiating. Sgt. First Class (Ret.) David Anthony ‘Tony’ Spruill, 65, of 117 Bayview Trail, Edenton, NC died Saturday July 23, 2005 at the Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City, NC.

Mr. Spruill was born January 6, 1940, in Pasquotank County and was the son of the late Harry L. and Addie White Spruill.

He was a member of the First Christian Church in Elizabeth City, NC, a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict having served as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne and 101st Airborne battalions, and a member of the Edenton American Legion Post # 40.

Survivors include his wife; Helga Rieck Spruill, his daughters Franziska Spruill and Samantha Spruill both of Elizabeth City, NC, brothers Mickey Spruill of Edenton, NC and Charles Spruill of Weeksville, NC and a grandson Caspian Spruill.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday July 27, 2005, at 3:00 P. M. at the First Christian Church in Elizabeth City, with Pastor Gary Vogelpohl officiating. Military rites will be rendered by the U. S. Army at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home of his daughters, at 962 Wellfield Road, Elizabeth City, NC, Tuesday evening from 6:00 P. M. to 9:00 P. M.

Ada Lee Ballance Harris, 86, a resident of 763 Ocean Highway N, Hertford, died Sunday July 24 2005 at her home. Mrs. Harris was born September 24, 1918, in Newland Township of Pasquotank County, the daughter of the late George C. and Hazel Annie Sanderlin Ballance. Mrs. Harris was the widow of the late Paige McNider Harris, Sr. During her early life at Newland School, she excelled in academics and sports and graduated salutatorian. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Elizabeth City and was an active volunteer in the Girl Scouts of America, the Elizabeth City High School Band and the Reading Program at Winfall Central Grammar School. Her joy in life was based on her love for God, her family, neighbors and those in need. Her children considered her as their best friend.

Mrs. Harris is survived by four daughters, Marion Hassell and husband Charles “Tiny” of Willow Springs, NC, Joan Mansfield and husband Eugene “Pete” of Winfall, NC, Ada Carol Lowther and husband Richard of Richmond VA, and Becky Harris Winslow and husband Johnny of Belvidere, NC, three sisters, Della May Stevenson of Louisiana, Dolly Dowden of Florida, Lois Rock of VA; four brothers, Robert Ballance of NC, Lonnie “Chuck” Ballance of VA, Franklin Ballance of NC, Leahman Ballance of VA, Herbert Ballance of VA, an uncle, Gilbert Ballance of NC, eight grandchildren, and thirteen great grandchildren. Besides her loving husband. and parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Paige Harris Jr., two brothers, Everett Ballance and Ray Ballance, one granddaughter, Sandra Hassell Dodson and one great grandson, J. R. Winslow.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 27th, 2005, at 11:00am in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC with the Reverend Bill Roberts and Pastor Dustin Sprouse officiating. Burial will be in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
