Susie Irene Spruill Long, 89, of Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday, September 30, 2005 at Winslow Memorial Home. She was born in Columbia, NC, the daughter of the late Charlie D. and Frances Cahoon Spruill and was the widow of Raleigh Wood Long. She was a retired L.P.N. at Albemarle Hospital, a member of Salem Baptist Church, and Order of the Eastern Star, Elizabeth City Chapter #44.
Mrs. Long is survived by four daughters, Sylvia Anne Parsons of Elizabeth City, NC, Kathryn Wood Long of Charlotte, NC, Susan Michele Long of Chandler, AZ, and Pamela Dale Mims of Raleigh, NC; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held Sunday, October 2, 2005 at 2:00 pm in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jeffrey Russell officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Saturday evening, from 7:00 until 8:30 and following the service in the lobby of the funeral home, and at other times at the residence of the daughter, Sylvia Parsons, 1274 Soundneck Road, Elizabeth City, NC. Elbert Curtis Parks, Jr., age 78, of 303 Troy Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday, September 30, 2005 at the Albmarle Hospital. Mr. Parks, a native of Prairie Du Rocher, IL, was the husband of Gertrude Beere Parks of the residence. He was a retired Engineman First Class from the U. S. Navy and a veteran of WW II, Korea, and Viet Nam; and a Baptist.
Besides his wife he is survived by four daughters, Rosemary Harrell, and Linda Cahill, both of Gates, NC, Annie Cox of Chesapeake, VA, and Jackie Williams of Sunbury, NC; two sons, Curtis Parks, III, of Portsmouth, VA, and Larry Parks of Gates, NC; thirteen grandchildren; four great grand children; and a cousin, Evelyn Jennings of Forest Hill, MO.
A funeral service with full military honors and burial will be at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery Monday, October 3, 2005, at 2:00 PM with the Rev. Kenneth C. McNiell officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 6:00 to 7:30 PM and at other times at the residence. Diane Cummings Via, 57, of 110 Trevor Way, Moyock, NC, died Thursday, September 29, 2005 at her residence. She was a native of Bronx, NY, and the daughter of Maryanne Bachman Cummings, and the late William Rody Cummings. She was preceded in death by her husband Everett Eugene Via. She was employed with the Military Sealift Command as Purser.
Survivors include her mother; Maryanne Bachman Cummings of Virginia Beach, VA. one daughter, Stacy Mead and her husband Kenneth of Moyock, NC; one son William Rogers and his wife Tara of Knoxville, TN; two sisters, Laurie Nappi and Alice Cummings both of Va. Beach, VA; one brother, John Cummings of Kings George, VA; six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 P. M. Sunday October 2, 2005, at the Navy Chapel Naval Station Norfolk with Navy Chaplin Randall Russell, LCDR, USN, CHC officiating.

William Frank Williams, age 94, of 225A Culpepper Road, South Mills, NC, died Wednesday, September 28, 2005 at his residence. Mr. Williams, a native of Pasquotank County, was the son of the late F. N. Williams and Mary Etheridge Williams and the husband of Hazel Price Williams. He was a retired farmer and former Director for The Production Credit Association. He lived most of his life in South Mills and was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church where he was a Honorary Lifetime Deacon and former Sunday School Superintendent for fifteen years. He served on the Camden County School Board from 1950 to 1980.
Mr. Williams is survived by four daughters, Gladys Clow, and husband Art, of South Mills, NC, Lois McPherson, and husband Bunch, of Camden, NC, Jean Sawyer, and husband Sam, of South Mills, NC, and Dianne Overton, and husband Gary, of Shiloh, NC; one son, Franklin Williams, Jr., and wife Linda, of South Mills, NC; one sister, Evelyn Clary of South Hill, VA; fourteen grandchildren; and fifteen great grandchildren; and his caretaker, Paula Banks. He was predeceased by his first wife Evelyn Whitehurst Williams in 1977.
Funeral services will be at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Friday, September 30, 2005, at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Frank Thigpen and the Rev. Phillip Garrett. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery, Elizabeth City, NC. Hazel Price Dilday Williams, age 85, of 225-A Culpepper Road, South Mills, NC, died Wednesday, September 28, 2005 at her residence. Mrs. Williams, a native of Duplin County, was the daughter of the late Arnold Rhodes Price and Sallie Mae Jones Price. She was a homemaker and a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, the Fidelas Sunday School Class and former President of the Baptist Women.
Mrs. Williams is survived by four step daughters, Gladys Clow, and husband Art, of South Mills, NC, Lois McPherson, and husband Bunch, of Camden, NC, Jean Sawyer, and husband Sam, of South Mills, NC, and Dianne Overton, and husband Gary, of Shiloh, NC; one step son, Franklin Williams, Jr., and wife Linda, of South Mills, NC; fourteen grandchildren; and fifteen great grandchildren; her caretaker Paula Banks; a host of friends, nieces and nephews; and a very dear friend for years, Jeanette Tinkham of Aulander, NC. She was predeceased by her first husband, the Rev. Herman T. Dilday in 1972.

Gregory B. Alker

GREGORY BRYANT ALKER, 45, of Kill Devil Hills, NC died Tuesday, September 27, 2005 at the Outer Banks Hospital, Nags Head, NC.
Mr. Alker was a past president of the Dare County Jaycees, past chairman of the Mariner’s Club Drive, ‘Old Mariner’, Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the First Flight Rotary Club. He was President of Planter’s Mortgage and was a longtime employee of Planter’s National Bank before entering the mortgage business. He was an avid University of Virginia fan and an avid Grateful Dead fan.
Mr. Alker is survived by his wife, Sheriee Hatton Alker and a daughter, Katy Summer Alker, both of the residence. He is also survived by his parents, Warren and Elizabeth Hughes of Richmond, VA.
A Memorial service will be held at St. Andrews By The Sea Episcopal Church on Monday, October 3, 2005 at 2:00 pm with the Rev. Charles E.B. Gill officiating. Chesapeake ‘ Jerome ‘J.B.’ Eason III of the 1100 Block of Benefit Rd., went home to be with his Lord on September 28, 2005 with his family by his side. J.B. was the son of J. Bruce Eason Jr. and the late Lauriee M. Eason. He retired from G.T.E. where he started as a lineman and worked his way up to management.
Survivors include his father, his loving and devoted wife, Jo-Ann Morse Eason; son, Jerome B. ‘Jerry’ Eason, IV and wife, Michelle of Chesapeake; daughter, Julie E. Cyre and husband James of Fredericksburg; two grandchildren, Connor and Cassidy Eason, the blessings of his life; sisters, Cynthia Fields and Rebecca Hearring both of Chesapeake and Joyce Thompson of FL; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins.
J.B. played softball, for the once nationally ranked Virginia Door team in the 60′s & 70′s and is a member of the Tidewater Softball Hall of Fame. He was an avid golfer and fisherman and was a member of the Hickory Ruritan Club, where he served in many capacities on both the local and zone levels . He was a member of Great Bridge Baptist church where he served as usher and was also a member of the Pairs and Spares Sunday School Class.
J.B. will be greatly missed by his friends and family.
Funeral services will be held at Great Bridge Baptist Church on Saturday at 11:00 am with Rev. Charles Moseley and Rev. Paul Lawson officiating. Burial will follow at Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake on Friday from 7:00pm until 9:00pm, on Saturday at the Hickory Ruitan Club following services and at the residence of J.B. and Jo-Ann at other times.

Chesapeake ‘ Norma Jean Medlin, 65, passed away on September 28, 2005. The angels came down , kissed her and closed her eyes after her 18 year courageous and valiant battle with cancer. Mrs. Medlin was born in Knoxville, TN. She was a seamstress, avid gardener and NASCAR fan.
Survivors include her husband of 48 yrs., William Bernard Medlin; five daughters, Teresa Cantone; Linda Linney; Joyce O’Brien; Kimberly Bradley and Pamela Nabers; mother, Irene Kanipe; two sisters, Ethel Burnett and Barbara Heath; mother-in-law, Helen Medlin; 9 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday at Albert G. Horton Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Colonial Chapel, 929 S. Battlefield Blvd., Chesapeake on Thursday from 7:00 to 8:30 pm.

Danny Ray Smith, 52, died Monday, September 26, 2005 after a brief illness at the Outer Banks Hospital in Nags Head. Mr. Smith was born in Danville, VA and resided in Kill Devil Hills, NC. He was employed at Griggs Lumber Company in Point Harbor, NC. He was the son of Ophelia Smith of Danville, VA and the late Dennis Frank Smith.
Besides his mother, he is survived by one brother, Dennis Smith of Danville, VA; one nephew, Jeff Mills, Sr. and his wife Therese and a great nephew, Jeff Mills, Jr. all of Kill Devil Hills. He was preceded in death by one sister, Deborah Kaye Smith-Mills.
He was known by all who knew and loved him as ‘The GAF’ – the Great American Fisherman. He will be greatly missed.

Oscar Edward White, age 59, of 2364 Peartree Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday, September 23, 2005. He was a native of Pasquotank County, NC. He was son of the late David Earl White, and Pecola Boyce White, and was husband of the late Christa Lee McCoy White. Mr. White served in the US Army and was a Viet Nam Veteran. He was retired Civil Service with the US Coast Guard Air Station Aircraft Shop Supervisor, and was member of the First Christian Church.
He is survived by one son, Edward E. ‘Eddie’ White of Elizabeth City, NC; two step daughters, and one step son; two brothers, Otah White and David Earl White both of Elizabeth City, NC; eight grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be Thursday, September 29, 2005 at 11:00 AM in New Hollywood Cemetery. The William Clarence Jackson VFW Post 6060 will provide military Honors.
