Tom A. Hooper, 87, of Southern Shores, NC, died Monday, October 31, 2005 in Nags Head. Born in Stumpy Point, NC, he was the son of the late Melton V. and Maude Odessa Wise Hooper. Mr. Hooper was retired from the U.S. Postal Service, was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard having served during World War II, a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church, Manteo Lodge #521 AF&AM, and the Dare County Shrine Club.

Mr. Hooper is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Jennette Hooper of the residence; three sons, Tommy and Franky Hooper both of Illinois and Ricky Hooper of Virginia Beach, VA; two step sons, Ronnie Tolson of Currituck County, NC and Larry Tolson of Norfolk, VA; one brother, Milton Hooper of Stumpy Point, NC; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Eloise Monette and Sybil Boomer and two brothers, Troy Hooper and Floyd Hooper.

A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, November 3, 2005 at 2:00 PM at Shiloh United Methodist Church, Stumpy Point, NC by the Rev. Sue Harris. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo on Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM.

William Weeks

William G. Weeks

Chesapeake ‘ William ‘Bill’ Gary Weeks, 62, of the 2200 block of Decatur St., died Monday, October 31, 2005 at his residence. Mr. Weeks was born in Windsor, N.C. to the late Lally Harrison and William Gary Weeks. He worked as a machinist for the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and was an avid fisherman.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 39 years, Barbara Ann Weeks; son, W. Allen Weeks and wife Donna of Chesapeake; sister, Kay Brown of Chesapeake; grandchildren, Jeffery, Devin and Gregory.
Graveside services will be held on Friday at 2:00 pm at Moyock Cemetery, Moyock, N.C. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake on Thursday from 7:00 pm until 8:30 pm. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.twifordfh.com.

Valerie McKenzie

Chesapeake ‘ Valerie (Driskell) McKenzie, 82, lost her short battle with cancer with grace and dignity on October 31, 2005 and has gone on to be with the Lord and her husband and family. Born June 2, 1923 to the late Katherine and Peter Baczek, she was the last of nine children, four brothers and four sisters. She is survived by one son, Robert Wayne Driskell and his wife Susan of Chesapeake and one step-daughter, Marilyn Kouma of Omaha, NE; many grand and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She is pre-deceased by her husband, Lynn R. McKenzie, step-daughter Merle Nustase; sisters, Nellie Wick, Mary Lambrect, Julie Krbavac and Dorothy Shoemaker; brothers, Joseph, Steven, Stanley and Walter Baczek.
She graduated from Irvington New Jersey High School. During World War II, she started working for the Associated Press (AP) in Washington, DC as one of the first female wirephoto technicians. One night she was told to stay late in order to receive and develop an important photo from overseas. It was the famous flag raising on Iwo Jima. She was also tasked with developing the first holocaust pictures for the army. She met many celebrities while working for the AP. While with the AP she worked at various newspapers. The Omaha World Herald is where she met her husband, Lynn R. McKenzie. She worked at the Newark Star Ledger, The New York Journal American and other NJ and NY area newspapers. She then transferred to the Washington DC AP office until her retirement. She resided in Alexandria, VA. Eventually moving to Chesapeake to live with her son and daughter-in-law. She was a compassionate and caring woman who lived a full and interesting life.
A funeral will be held at Hollywood Memorial Park in Union, NJ on Thursday at 11:00 am . In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the American Cancer Society or Chesapeake Healthcare Facility on Kingsborough Square.

Hallie Dyer

Hallie Silverthorne Dyer, 95, died Saturday, October 29, 2005 at W. R. Winslow Memorial Nursing Home, Elizabeth City, NC. Mrs. Dyer was a former resident of Canada, Point Harbor, NC and Riverwind.

She was born May 26, 1910 and was the daughter of the late Edward L. Silverthorne and Judith Mann Swindell Silverthorne. She was preceded in death by her husband Fred Dyer who died March 28, 1988, and her sisters Ruth Hatcher, Winnie Munden, Annie Hastings, Hilda Riddick, Estelle Duncan and Hazel Pritchard.

Mrs. Dyer was a graduate of Elizabeth City High School, and was a retired cosmetologist. She was employed as a beautician with Mrs. Della Harris Beauty Parlor, and later opened the second beauty shop in the early 1930′s in Elizabeth City known as the Cara Nome Beauty Shop.

Survivors include her sister Edna S. James of Elizabeth City, NC. and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held Monday at 1:00 P. M. at the Twiford Memorial Chapel with John Luton officiating. Burial will follow in the New Hollywood Cemetery.

The family will join friends following the funeral service in the visitation area of the funeral home, and other times at the home of her sister at 1009 Woodruff Avenue.

Dean M. Hoyer

Dean Martin Hoyer, 42, of Virginia Beach, VA. died Tuesday October 25, 2005 in Baltimore, MD.

Mr. Hoyer was born in Berks County, Reading, PA. on April 8, 1963.
He was a veteran of the U. S. Army and owner and operator of Dean Hoyer the Stump Destoryer in Virginia Beach.

Survivors included his daughter; Kelley Hoyer of Virginia Beach, VA. his mother Peggy Bray Imbriaco of Norfolk, Va., his father Paul Martin Hoyer of Virginia Beach, VA., sister Paula H. Whilden of Norfolk, Va., brothers; Michael Hoyer of Chesapeake, VA, and Craig Hoyer of Baltimore, MD., nephews Eric, Greg and Chris Whilden, Paul, Michael and Bradley Hoyer, a niece Stacie Hoyer, and a great-niece Cayla Whilden and great-nephew Carson Whilden.

A graveside funeral service will be held Sunday at 3:30 P. M. at the Stokley Cemetery near the Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City, NC with Rev. Mason Smith officiating.

Kenneth R. Webster, Sr.

Mr. Kenneth Russell Webster, Sr., age 79, of 112 Sunny Acres Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday, October 27, 2005 at Chowan Hospital. Mr. Webster, a native of Baltimore, MD, was the son of the late Vernon Webster and Erma Edith Brown Webster and the widower of Ruth Louise Kollra Webster. He was a retired US Army Marksman Instructor having served in WW II and the Korean War.

Mr. Webster is survived by four daughters, Evelyn Lowman , Barbara Lilly and husband Thomas, Brenda Chrystal and husband Joseph, and Patricia Webster all of Elizabeth City, NC; two sons, Kenneth Webster, Jr., and wife Barbara, and Edward Webster all of Elizabeth city, NC; a brother Gardner Webster and wife Mary Lou of Yuma, AZ; eleven grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Gerald Webster; a granddaughter, Christine Schott and her husband David Schott.

A graveside memorial service will be Saturday, October 29, 2005, at 2:00 PM in Memory Gardens Cemetery with the Rev. Beverly Mercer officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence. Virginia Bunn

Virginia Thurman Bunn, 89, wife and beloved mother, died October 24, 2005, in her home in Elizabeth City. Virginia was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Richard S. Bunn and a daughter, Betty. Virginia was born in Rocky Mount, NC.

She had five children: Jimmy P. Bunn who resides in Elizabeth City, Jenny Bunn Lamb who resides in Raleigh with her husband, Marshall; Betty Bunn Martin, who predeceased her; Richard S. Bunn, Jr. who resides in Elizabeth City with his wife, Sharon; and Barbara Bunn Brown who resides in Kitty Hawk with her husband, Stephen. Virginia had five loving grandchildren: Jacqueline Elizabeth Bunn, Richard Speight Bunn, III, Ivy Blades Bunn, Jonathan Farrior Bunn, and Stephen Raines Brown, Jr.

Our Mom often spoke of being blessed with the best things life can offer: a loving husband and father, children and grandchildren who loved her dearly, many good friends, an unsurpassed zeal for life, and until just recently, the health, the mental attitude, and the get-up-and-go of someone half her age.

Virginia was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, in Elizabeth City, where services will be held at 1:00pm, Thursday, October 27, 2005. Burial will follow at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Rev. Ricky William ‘Rick’ Warren, Sr., 49, of 4 Tanglewood Drive, Elizabeth City, NC died Wednesday October 19, 2005, from injuries received in a truck accident. Mr. Warren was born in Blytheville, AR, and was the son of Shelley Curtis Warren Williams and the late James William Warren. He retired from the U. S. Navy with the rank of CPO, was a former employee with the City of Elizabeth City, and was technical representative with Filta-Fry Corporation of Norfolk, VA.

Survivors include: his wife Deborah ‘Debbie’ Hobbs Warren of Elizabeth City, NC; his mother Shelley Curtis Warren Williams of Portsmouth, VA; his daughters Nikki Warren, Jessica Warren, Audra Warren, Laura Warren; his son Ricky William Warren, Jr.; sisters Judy Warren Wyatt of Whiteville, TN, his twin sister Vicky Warren Carter of Jonesboro, AR, and Dr. Deborah Warren Myers of Greenwood, MS; brothers James Christopher Warren of Gosnell, AR and Billy Joe Larrow, Jr. of Maine; and six nieces and nephews.

A funeral service with Full Military Honors by the U.S. Navy will be held Tuesday, October 25, 2005, at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Rev. Douglas C. Plumlee officiating. The family will receive friends after the service in the lobby of the funeral home.

Ethel Marie Craig Wyatt, 65, of 873 Horseshoe Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died at Chesapeake General Hospital on Friday evening, October 21, 2005. A native of Piedmont, West Virginia, she was born the daughter of the late Frank Wallace Craig and Mary Howell Craig. She was a waitress, and a Methodist.

Mrs. Wyatt is survived by: two daughters, Joan Frances Anthony and friend Jamie Whitt of Louisville, KY, and Cynthia Ann Bennett of Bedford, VA; one son Andrew ‘Andy’ Craig Wyatt and wife Christine of Elizabeth City, NC; eight grandchildren; and one great grandchild. She was preceeded in death by a sister Mary Eckley.

A Memorial Service will be held at the graveside in New Hollywood Cemetery Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock with Toni Wood officiating. Nina Hope Squires Walker, 76, of 1500 Edgewood Drive, died Saturday, October 22, 2005 at her residence. She was born in Belhaven, NC, the daughter of the late Golden and Rhoda Keech Squires and was the widow of Nelson Walker. Mrs. Walker was a bar tender at the Chief Petty Officer’s Association, and a member of the CPOA auxiliary.

Mrs. Walker is survived by a daughter, Sharon Hooper and husband Doug of Elizabeth City, NC; a brother, Kenneth Squires and wife Louise of Elizabeth City, NC; and a granddaughter, Nicole Bolinsky and husband Ron.
