James Martin ‘Jimmy’ Voliva, Sr., age 68, of 136 East Ridge Road, Moyock, NC, died Friday, December 31, 2004, in Albemarle Hospital. He was a native Camden County, NC, son of Elizabeth Sawyer Voliva of Elizabeth City, NC, and the late Clyde S. Voliva, and husband of Dorothy P. ‘Dot’ Voliva of the residence. Mr. Voliva served in the US Air force, and was retired from the Ford Motor Company and past president of local 919. He was also retired from the U.A.W. International as Representative Region #8, and was a former County Commissioner and a member of Shawboro Ruritans. He was member of Providence Baptist Church where he was a former Sunday School Superintendent and deacon. He also coached county league baseball.
Beside his wife and mother, Mr. Voliva is survived by two sons, Tony Voliva and his wife Donna of Currituck, NC, Mike Voliva and his wife, Lena of Sligo, NC; one sister, Linda Mayo and her husband, Gilbert of Raleigh, NC; one brother, Larry Voliva and his wife Bonnie of Eugene, Oregon; five grandchildren, Martin, Marybeth, Evan, Sarah, and Adam Voliva. He was predeceased by one son, Jim M. Voliva, Jr.; five brothers and two sisters.
A funeral service will be Monday, January 3, 2005, at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, with Rev. Charles Stevens and Rev. Charles Wellons officiating. Burial will follow in the Family Cemetery 219 Bullyard Road. Aline Sawyer Pierce, age 84, of 1147 North Hwy. 343, South Mills, NC, died Thursday, December 30, 2004 at her residence. She was born in South Mills, NC; daughter of the late Robert Sawyer and Kate Sawyer Riggs and was the widow of Curtis W. Pierce. She attended New Beginnings Assembly of God.
Mrs. Pierce is survived by a daughter, Kay P. Banks and husband James of South Mills, NC; a son, John D. Pierce of South Mills, NC; a sister, Wilma Humphries and husband Pete of Powells Point, NC; five grandchildren, Tammy P. Cutrell and husband David of South Mills, NC, Deana P. Hankins and husband Greg of Currituck, NC, John Kevin Pierce and wife April of Japan, Amy C. Banks of South Mills, NC, and Jason Banks and wife Tiffany of Richmond, VA; two great grandchildren, Jordan Cutrell of South Mills, NC, and Cody Hankins of Currituck, NC; and a childhood friend, Charlie Sawyer and wife Annie of South Mills. Beside her parents and husband, Mrs. Pierce was preceded in death by a sister, Grace Sawyer Pierce and step-father, John Riggs.
A funeral service will be held Sunday, January 2, 2005 at 3:00 pm in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Carroll Daniels officiating. Burial will be in the Sawyer Family Cemetery in South Mills, NC. Following the service the family will be returning to the home of the daughter, Kay P. June Estelle ‘Judy’ Kelly Everton, age 79, of 135 North Keller Lane, Grandy, NC, died Thursday, December 30, 2004, in Albemarle Hospital. She was a native of Sidney, Australia, daughter of the late Ned Kelly and Mabel Jean Hanslow. She was the wife of Roy Melton Everton, Jr. of the residence, and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of The Coinjock American Legion Post #288
Besides her husband she is survived by two daughters, Kelly Everton of Grandy, NC, and Nancy Everton of Chesapeake, VA; one son, Kevin Everton of Grandy, NC; one granddaughter, Janel Moore, two great grandchildren, Michael and Brianna Moore.

Chesapeake ‘ John Calvin Walston, 93, died December 29, 2004. Mr. Walston was born in Weeksville, NC to the late Sarah Elizabeth Banks and Durant Barco Walston. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, the Woodmen of the World and an avid collector of cameras and typewriters, who loved working with his hands. Mr. Walston was predeceased by two wives, Maysville Harrell Walston and Mary Jennings Walston.
Survivors include one daughter, Barbara ‘Bobbie’ W. Austin and husband Frank of Chesapeake; step-daughter, Mary Jo Ward of Chesapeake; one brother, James W. Walston and wife Marian of Chesapeake; one step-daughter-in-law, Nancy Jennings; two grandchildren, Frank B. Austin III and wife Cathy of Chesapeake and Kenneth ‘Ken’ Austin and wife Debbi of Carrollton, VA; six step grandchildren and three great grandchildren, Bryan, Amanda, and Alicia.
Funeral services will be held at Twiford’s Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake on Monday at 11:00 am with the Rev. Lowe Norman and Rev. Frank Jennings officiating. Burial will follow at Old Hollywood Cemetery, Elizabeth City, NC. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 7:00 until 8:30 pm. and at the residence of Barbara and Frank Austin at other times. Mrs. Edna Louise Mountain Carter, age 91, of 401 Hastings Lane, Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday, December 30, 2004, at Carolina House of Elizabeth City. Mrs. Carter, a native of Johnston, PA, was the daughter of the late William Mountain and Sue Ellen Frew Mountain and the widow of Mark Lee Carter. She was a Methodist and a homemaker.
Mrs. Carter is survived by a daughter, Candace Lee Roth, and husband Gary, of Edenton, NC; a sister, Audrey Courter of Greensboro, NC; two grandsons, Mark Carter Roth and John Scott Roth; and two great grandsons, John Tanner Roth and Ethan Frederick Roth.

William Thomas Ralph, age 81, of 1224 US Highway 17 South, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, December 28, 2004, at his residence. He was a native of Pasquotank County, NC, son of the late Dorsey Ralph, and Minnie Pritchard Ralph, and husband of the late Lydia Snooksé“” Margaret Hooker Ralph. He was a retired Maintenance Foreman with Carolina Feed and Seed, and was a Baptist.
Mr. Ralph is survived by two daughters, Poppy Hassell and her husband, Stanley, and Marsha Elaine Ralph all of Elizabeth City, NC; one daughter in law, Darlene Bundy of Williamston, NC; three sisters, Katherine ‘Kitty’ Jones, and Emily Sawyer, both of Currituck, NC, Mary Holder and her husband Jack, of Elizabeth City, NC; one brother, Melvin R. Ralph and his wife of Sandra of Elizabeth City, NC; twelve grandchildren, and sixteen great grandchildren. He was predeceased by three sons, Charles M, Jesse H. and Norman W. Bundy, one sister, Irene Coleman, two brothers, Dorsey Ralph, Jr., and Winfred ‘Wimpy’ Ralph.

Marilyn A. Hurr, 61, beloved wife, mother and friend, passed away Dec. 25, 2004. She was a member of Kempsville Presbyterian Church. A native of Moncks Corner, S.C., she was predeceased by her mother, Sarah N. Ayers Sheppard and her father, John O. Ayers. Marilyn is survived by her husband of 40 years, William K. “Ben” Hurr; four sons, Will Hurr of Anchorage, Alaska, Jeff and Donna Hurr of Virginia Beach, John and Amy Hurr of Chesapeake and George and Cindy Hurr of Virginia Beach; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Marilyn enjoyed time with her family, her Hickory neighbors and fellow church and choir members at KPC and Good Hope UMC. In 2003, she retired after 15 years with Chesapeake Public Libraries. She served in the medical administration field for a number of years after graduating from Palmer College in 1963. The family will receive visitors today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Twiford Funeral Home, 929 Battlefield Blvd. South, Chesapeake. A funeral will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Kempsville Presbyterian Church. J.J. Harris, Jr., 59, of 568 Crooked Run Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, December 19, 2005 in Gates County as a result of an automobile accident. He was born in Pasquotank County, NC, the son of Mary Willie Yelton Harris of Elizabeth City, NC and the late Joseph Jordan Harris, Sr., and was the widower of Josephine Williams Harris. He was an Assistant Principal at Grandy Primary School in Camden and was a member of Newland United Methodist Church.
Besides his mother, Mr. Harris is survived by a daughter, Tracy Hofler and husband Myron of Sunbury, NC; a sister, Catherine Harris Mudra of Elizabeth City, NC; two brothers, Glenn Harris and wife Sandra of Elizabeth City, NC, and Clif Harris and wife Lynnette of Wilmington, NC; two grandchildren, Rebecca Leigh Hofler and James Austin Hofler; six nieces, Teresa, Karen, Dale, Alison, Molly, and Hannah; a nephew, Kelly; a great niece, Callie; and a great nephew, Ethan.

FRANK EUGENE ‘JOHN’ BUSH, JR., 49, of Kill Devil Hills, NC died Monday, December 19, 2005 at his residence. Mr. Bush was born in East Stroudsburg, PA and was a carpenter. He was the son of the late Lillian Irene Niepert Daughtry.
Mr. Bush is survived by his wife, Jeanie Lassiter Bush of the residence; two daughters, Brittany Phillips and husband, David and Christina Bush; a son, Kristopher Bush, all of Colington, NC; a sister, Kim Carr of Virginia Beach, VA; and two grandchildren, James and Aiden.
