Rita Miller Wells, age 82, of 1700 W. Ehringhaus Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, January 30, 2006, in Albemarle Hospital. She was a native of Avon, NC, and was the daughter of the late Dr. L. Sigsbee Miller and Retta Meekins Miller, and was formerly married to Julian Ralph Toxey, Sr. She was the owner and operator of a day care center.

Mrs. Wells is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth Toxey Derbyshire and her husband the Rev. James Derbyshire of Peoria, IL; two sons, Julian Ralph Toxey, Jr. and his wife Pat of Gatesville, NC, Wayne Toxey and his wife Pat of Elizabeth City, NC; three sisters, Lorene Harris of Avon, NC, Vivian Forehand of Cocoa Beach, FL, and Myrtle Turner of Richmond, VA; two brothers, Luther S. Miller, Jr. of New York, NY, and James C. Miller of Va. Beach, VA; one granddaughter, Nita Toxey Doughtie and her husband Jeff; two great grandsons, Jacob Doughtie and Samuel Doughtie; a very special niece, Pat Elliott, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one sister, Stella Rose Ward and one grandson, J.R. Toxey, III.

A funeral service will be Thursday, February 2, 2006, at 2:00 PM at Pearl Street Pentecostal Holiness Church, with the Rev. Toni Wood and the Rev. Frank Fowler officiating. Burial will follow in the Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC. Mrs. Theresa Morris Freismuth, age 86, of 2207 Meads Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Sunday, January 29, 2006, at her residence. Mrs. Freismuth, a native of Kearny, NJ, was the daughter of the late Henry Oliver Morris and Tessie Bannon Morris and the wife of William M. Freismuth of the residence. She was a retired nurse having worked at the University of VA Hospital and the Albemarle Hospital. She was a member of the Elizabeth City Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and former Past Matron of the Liberty O.E.S. Chapter in Kearny. She was a charter member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, founding member of the Albemarle Food Bank, and one of the first workers with the Community Prescription Project in Elizabeth City.

Besides her husband she is survived by two daughters, Helen Theresa Freismuth of Middlebury, VT, and Martha Elizabeth Freismuth of Chester, VA; two sons, William D. Freismuth of Providence Forge, VA, and Paul W. Freismuth of Randolph, VT.

A memorial service will be Thursday, February 2, 2006, at 12 Noon at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church with the Rev. Garry Vogelpohl officiating. The family will receive friends immediately after the service at the church. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Angie T. Hawkins; daughters, Keturah Samone and Amber Breauna, both of Virginia Beach; son, Alton Duane of Virginia Beach; sisters, Juanita J. Hawkins of Moss Point, Miss., and RP2 Lenora B. Chavis (Hawkins), assigned to Construction Battalion 133 out of Gulfport, Miss., and husband Anton; brothers, Erik Hawkins of Moss Point, Miss., and Staff Sgt. Randy W. Hawkins, CBIRF, Indian Head, Md., U.S. Marine Corps, and wife Shauna; niece, Nykeria Hawkins and nephews, Traviras Hawkins, Jamarian D. Smith and Joseph C. Miles. The family will receive friends at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Tuesday from 11 a.m. to noon. The funeral at the church will follow with the Rev. Daryl Scott officiating. VERA BEACHAM BREASHEARS, 84, of Kitty Hawk, died, Friday, in Nags Head, N.C. Mrs. Breashears was born in Norfolk,VA and was a homemaker and also was known by many as a ‘Greeter’ at the Kitty Hawk Walmart for several years.

She was the daughter of the late William Roy and Inez Gaimel Beacham and the wife of the late Royal D. Breashears.

Surviving are one daughter: Sue Ann Burns of Wilbur-By-The-Sea, FLA; and one son: James ‘Jim’ Breashears of Colington; two sisters: Alma Hayman of Kitty Hawk and Shirley Shannon of Suffolk,VA; two brothers: William Roy Beacham, Jr and Jerry Holden Beacham both of Kitty Hawk; four grandchildren: Geoffrey Burns, Joshua Ferrara, David Ferrara and Ryan Shores.

A service of remembrance will be held Wednesday, February 1, 2006, at 10:00 a.m. in Austin Cemetery by the Rev. Eugene McLawhorn. The family suggests in lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice. Twiford Colony Chapel Manteo is serving the Breashears family.

Beatrice S. Halstead

Beatrice Sawyer Halstead, 99, of 1700 W. Ehringhaus St., Elizabeth City, NC died Saturday, January 28, 2006, in the Winslow Memorial Home. She was born in Norfolk, VA to the late William S. and Claudia Sanderlin Sawyer and was the widow of the late Leland ‘Bingham’ Halstead. Mrs. Halstead was a retired salesperson for the Apothecary Shop, a member of the First Baptist Church and Happyettes.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Halstead of Elizabeth City, NC and a very close friend, Marie Halstead of Elizabeth City, NC. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Enoch S. Sawyer.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, January 30, 2006, at 11:00am in the Twiford’s Memorial Chapel by Rev. Mason Smith. Burial will be in the New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the chapel service and at other times at the home of Elizabeth Halstead, 1301 Fairfax Ave., Elizabeth City, NC. Ruth Jones Lane, 79, of 805 Greenleaf Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday, January 26, 2006 at Albemarle Hospital. She was the widow of Ernest Lane and the daughter of the late Daniel Ray and Mary Ellen Byrum Jones.

Mrs. Lane is survived by a daughter, Joyce L. Weeks and husband C.W. of Elizabeth City, NC; four sisters, Hattie Carter of Hertford, NC, Alice Pureza and Mary Barnes both of Elizabeth City, NC, and Martha Teves of Dale City, VA; four brothers, George and Luttrell Jones both of Dothan, AL, Robert Jones of Elizabeth City, NC; and Ronald Jones of Norwalk, CA; three grandchildren, Paul Weeks and wife Lisa and Tammy Colson and husband Cliff all of Elizabeth City, NC, and Jason Weeks and wife Holly of South Mills, NC; and six great grandchildren, Justin and Cody Weeks, Chase Lambert, and Garret, Cody, and Cassidy Colson. Besides her husband and parents, Mrs. Lane is preceded in death by two brothers, Ernest and Daniel Jones.

Flora Chappell Bunch

Flora Chappell Bunch, age 90, went to be with her Lord and Savior on January 26, 2006. Mrs. Bunch died at the Winslow Nursing Home, and was a former resident of Herford and Elizabeth City, NC.

‘Miss Flora’ as she was lovingly called was very active in her church, First Christian for over seventy years. She was a youth leader, a board member, an active Sunday School member and chairperson of the membership and hospitality committees as well as being there to fill in wherever needed.

Her precious husband, Hermon Edwood Bunch, a son, Laverne Bunch and a grandson, Kenneth Beals, her two sisters and her brother preceded her in death.

Survivors include her two daughters; Ann Jennette Beals and Bobbie Boynton and husband, Lin all of Hertford, NC, daughter-in-law, Helen Bunch of Amarillo, TX, ten grandchildren, Joy Rhodes and her husband, Al, Danny Beals and his wife, Sue, Judy Johnson and her husband, Elwood all of Elizabeth City, NC, Tighe Simons of Asheville, NC., Hermon L. ‘Butch’ and his wife, Kathy of New Hope, NC, Joseph M. Bunch and his wife, Michelle of Newport News, VA, Tim Bunch and wife, Jenean of Edenton, NC, Tommy Tilley, Jr., and wife, Jan, and Todd Tilley all of Hertford, NC., Guy Webb of Charlotte, NC., a granddaughter-in-law, Debbie Beals and son, Michael of Upper Marlboro, MD, and eleven great-grandchildren; Trista Bogardus, Chrissy Bryant, Adam Johnson, Blake Simons, Erica Beals, Bailey Tilley, Harley Tilley, Kelly Bunch, Austin Bunch, Brittany Bunch and Caleb Bunch, two step-great grandchildren, Josh and Tina Anderson, three great-great-grandchildren, Reid Thompson, Mackenzie Bryant and Mallory Bogardus, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Sunday January 29, 2006, at 2:00 P. M. at the First Christian Church with Rev. William Roberts officiating.

The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service in the church fellowship hall, and other times at the home of her granddaughter Joy B. Rhodes, 707 Wareham Street, Elizabeth City.

Mrs. Grace Morris Wright, age 94, of the 1700 block of West Ehringhaus Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday, January 26 2006, at Guardian Care Nursing Home. Mrs. Wright, a native of Chowan County, was the daughter of the late Theodore Franklin Morris and Sarah Harris Morris and the widow of Ervin Walter Wright. She was a homemaker and a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.

She is survived by a niece, Carolyn Etheridge of Shiloh, NC; a nephew, Wade Chappell of Chesapeake, VA; a great niece, Kimberly Trott; a great nephew, Tim Etheridge; a great great niece, Victoria Trott; and a great great nephew, Nicholas Trott, all of Camden, NC

Myrtle Ferebee Smith

Myrtle Bell Ferebee Smith, age 77, of 1104 Tulls Creek Road, Moyock, NC, died Wednesday, January 25, 2006, at her residence. She was a native of Beaufort, NC, daughter of the late John Calvin Phillips and Mary Elizabeth Gordon Phillips. She was wife of the late Clyde Ferebee, Sr. for 43 years, and the late Gordon W. Smith. She was a homemaker and a foster parent for the Currituck County Social Services for over 25 years, and was blessed with over 65 foster children. She attended Riddle Pentecostal Holiness Church. Myrtle Bell loved everybody.

She is survived by two sons, Clyde Ferebee, Jr. and his wife Diane; Ronnie Lee Ferebee and his wife Linda, all of Moyock, NC; one sister, Edna Culpepper of Chesapeake, VA; several grandchildren, great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was blessed with many friends. Special friends being Dave and Sandy Gross, Fred Austin, Ruth Jones, and Thelma Baker. She was predeceased in death by five sisters, Evia Bagget, Alice Jones, Sara Miller, Ethel Mae Sorey and Stella Sorey Brazier; five brothers, Tilbert Lee, Jack, Willie, Grover, and Luther Phillips.

A graveside service will be Saturday, January 28, 2006, at 11:00 AM in the Moyock Cemetery, with the Rev. Roland Cooper officiating. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC. Clara Wing

Clara G. Clemmer Wing, 93, formerly of Independence, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, January 24, 2006 at the Britthaven Outer Banks Nursing Home in Nags Head, North Carolina. She is the mother of Maurietta Weber of Independence, Kansas.

Clara was born, October 8, 1912 on a farm Southeast of Chanute, Kansas to Ira S. and Sara A. (Watts) Taylor, She was raised in the Chanute area where she attended schools. On November 28, 1931, Clara married Clyde Leathers in Sublette, Kansas. He preceded her in death on August 11, 1965 in Oregon. Clara married Ralph Clemmer on July 8, 1966 and he preceded her in death in April of 1990. She married Jim ‘Merle’ Wing on May 11, 1999 in Tillamook, Oregon and he also preceded her in death in 2002. Clara was a homemaker. She was a member of the AARP, Rebekah Lodge and the Sixty Club.

Clara is survived by her daughter, Maurietta Weber of Independence, Kansas; one brother, George E. Taylor of Chanute, Kansas; one granddaughter, Teri and husband Robert Grubbs of Nags Head, North Carolina; one great granddaughter, Ashley Grubbs of Nags Head, North Carolina; one step daughter, Jane and husband Al Kendall of Payson, AZ; one step son, Richard and wife Lorraine Clemmer of Prescott, AZ; and four step grandchildren, Tracy and wife Johnine Kendall of Tacoma, WA, Brett Kendall of Phoenix, AZ, James and wife Donna Clemmer of Sierra Vista, AZ, and Jay Clemmer of Tulsa, OK. She also had 5 step great grandchildren and 2 step great-great grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; one sister; and one granddaughter, Vicki Smith.

Graveside services for Clara G. Clemmer-Wing will be held at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, January 31, 2006 at the Harrisonville Cemetery, rural Independence, Kansas.
