Benjamin C. “Cliff” Gray
Benjamin Clifford ‘Cliff’ Gray, Jr., 52, of 140 Lambs Road, Camden died Tuesday February 28, 2006 at the Albemarle Hospital.
Mr. Gray was born November 28, 1953 in Pasquotank County and was the son of Benjamin Clifford Gray and the late Frances Sawyer Gray.
He was a member of the Sawyer’s Creek Baptist Church and received a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Elizabeth City State University.
Survivors include his father; Benjamin Clifford Gray of Camden, NC., sisters Gail Gray and her friend Greg Zellen of Sylvan Lake, MI., and Jean Gray and her friend Steve White of Elizabeth City, NC., brother John Gray and wife DeEtte of Lutherville, MD., two nephews and one great-nephew.
A memorial service will be held Friday March 3, at 3:30 P. M. at the Sawyer’s Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Don Carter and Rev. Herbert Hemingway officiating.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be directed to: the Sawyer’s Creek Baptist Church Youth Fund, 241 Sawyer’s Creek Road, Camden, NC 27921.
The family will receive friends at the home 140 Lambs Road, Camden and immediately following the memorial service at the church.

Raymond Williams
Mr. Raymond Charles Williams, age 54, of 817 Bunnells Avenue, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, February 28, 2006, at his residence. Mr. Williams, a native of New Haven, CT, was the son of Rae E. Williams of Columbus, OH, and the late Theodie Williams and was the husband of Joyce a. Griffin Williams of the residence. He was a Supervisor and Route Co-ordinator for the City of Elizabeth City Public Works Department, a US Army veteran, and a Presbyterian.
Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by a son, Shawn Williams and wife Patrilla of Garner, NC; two sisters, Marlen Susie Stafford of Columbus, OH, and Kathy Overton of Columbia, MD; and three grandchildren.
A funeral service will be Saturday, March 4, 2006, at 3:00 PM at Twiford’s Northside Chapel with Pastor Keith Smith of Grace & Truth Community Church officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the funeral home and immediately after the service at the funeral home and at other times at the residence. Sylvia Lucas
Mrs. Sylvia Mable Daley Lucas, age 95, of 463 Holiday Lane, Hertford, NC died Saturday, February 25, 2006 at her residence. Mrs. Lucas, a native of Antrim, MI was the daughter of the late Leroy Daley and Mary Jane Keggely Daley and the widow of Abraham Lucas. She was a retired quality tester for the Oregon Fruit Cannery.
She is survived by a niece, Norma Jeanne Lawson of Hertford, NC.

Donald M. Gray
Buxton, NC
Donald M. Gray, 70, passed away on Saturday, February 25, 2006. He was born in Long Branch, NJ and was a member of the Lighthouse Assembly of God Church. He served with the U.S. Coast Guard and was sole proprietor of Island Furniture. He was the son of the late Mack Thomas and Lucy Mae Gray Gray and the husband of Maleta Gray of Frisco.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters; Dawn Powell of Buxton and Sandra Hanson of Annapolis, MD; three sons; Donald M. Gray, Jr. and Keith Gray, both of Buxton and James A. Gray of Frederick, MD; two step-daughters; Sissy Slaughter and Leonora Vernesoni, both of Buxton; two sisters; Janet Gaskins and Bonnie Farkas, both of Buxton; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held at the Lighthouse Assembly of God, Buxton, on Wednesday, March 1, 2006 at 3:00 PM with Rev. David Waterfield officiating. Burial will take place in the Gray Family Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends at the church on Tuesday, February 28, 2006 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

Mattie H. Winslow
Mattie Hendren Winslow, age 84, of 1506 West Main Street, Elizabeth City died Saturday, February 25, 2006, at her residence. Mrs. Winslow was born January 18,1922, in the Tyner Community of Perquimans County, and was the daughter of the late John Robert Hendren and Olive Lee Smith Hendren and the widow of Charles Kenneth Winslow. She was a member of the Evangelical Methodist Church, a former church choir member, and a homemaker.
Survivors include her daughter Linda W. Biggs and husband Robert Wayne Biggs of Elizabeth City, NC; son Kenneth Stephen Winslow of Elizabeth City, NC; sister Lillian H. Winslow of Belvidere, NC; brothers, William Kenneth Hendren of Albuquerque, NM, and Robert L. Hendren of Tyner, NC; four grandchildren Daun B. Belangia and husband Jason, Brian W. Biggs and wife Shawn, Heather B. Winslow and husband Jeffrey and Stephanie W. Walters and husband Brannon, eight great-grandchildren; Leah Vaughan, Olivia Vaughan, Hunter Belangia, Brennan, Carson, Avery and Sam Biggs and Jett Winslow. She was predeceased by a sister, Irene H. Butt.
A funeral service will be Monday, February 27, 2006 at 2:00 P.M. in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Bill Mayo officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Gloria M. Jones
Virginia Beach ‘ Gloria Mae Ives Jones, 78, passed away on February 25, 2006. She was born in Elizabeth City, NC to the late William R. and Lona Fulcher Ives. Prior to becoming ill she enjoyed cooking and attending East Coast Baptist Church. Mrs. Jones was predeceased by her husband, Richard A, Jones and her sister Elizabeth R. Jackson.
She is survived by two sons; Richard A. Jones, Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va. and Mike A. Jones of Chesapeake.
Services will be at Twiford’s Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake on Wednesday at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park in Elizabeth City, NC. Charlie G. Swindell

RODANTHE, NC
CHARLIE G. SWINDELL, JR, 87, of Highway 12, Rodanthe, died, Friday, February 24, 2006, in his residence. Mr. Swindell was born in Stonewall, NC and was a retired civil service employee with Grey Hound Bus Co. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Hopewell, Va, a Mason with the Tampa, FLA lodge, a former merchant marine and a former member of the Chicamacomico Anglers.
Mr. Swindell was the son of the late Charlie G. Swindell, Sr and the late Cynthia Swindell and was the husband of Natalie Thompson Stowe Swindell of the home.
Besides his wife surviving are his sons: Charlie, Kenneth, John, Christopher, Stephen and Glenn; daughters: Jo Alice, Christine and Barbara; sisters: Cynthia, Myrtis, Lorain and Louise and a brother: Guy. 17 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren and 1 step great grandchild.
A service of remembrance will be held Wednesday, March 1, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. in Fair Haven United Methodist Church by the Rev. John Cullop and Dwight Burrus. Inurnment will be held in Quidley Cemetery in Buxton. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be made to Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation, P.O. Edward Harris, Sr.
Edward Charles Harris, Sr., of 400 Ferry Road Lot #7, Elizabeth City, NC died Friday, February 24, 2006 at his residence. He was born in Pasquotank County, NC to the late Charlie Henry Harris and the late Lenora Casey Harris and was the husband of Bonnie Smithson Harris. Mr. Harris was retired from the City of Elizabeth City, Water Department.
Mr. Harris is survived by three daughters, Sarah Harris of Greenville, NC, Jeannie Blassingham of Norfolk, Va. and Tracy Cratt of Greenville, NC; one son, Douglas Harris of Chesapeake, Va; one brother C.E. ‘Lucky’ Harris of Elizabeth City, NC; six grandchildren; three great grandchildren and was predeceased by one son, Edward Charles ‘Chuck’ Harris, Jr.
A graveside service will be conducted Monday, February 27, 2006 at 11:00 am in New Hollywood Cemetery by the Rev. Aaron Pendley. The family will be at the residence. Kathy Dowdy Covington, 56, of Buxton, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2006 at a local nursing home. Kathy was born December 30, 1949 in Richmond, VA. She was formerly a medical secretary at Medical College of Virginia Hospital of Richmond, and more recently, owner of the Hair Hut, Frisco, NC.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her loving companion of many years, David Hissey of Buxton; her parents, Earl and Edna Dowdy of Richmond, VA; a sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Robin Powel of Buxton; a brother and sister-in-law, Earl Dowdy, Jr. and Jennifer of Richmond; a son, Paul Olio of Boston, MA; a nephew, Michael Gosik of Roy, UT; a niece, Laurie Smith of Williamsburg, VA; a niece, Alexis Dowdy of Richmond; close family members Steve and Connie Hissey of Frisco, NC and their son, Eric Hissey; Susan and Ernie Alasandro of Angier, NC and their daughters, Sarah and Kristen Alasandro; and many other loving friends and family.
The family wishes to express their love and gratitude to everyone for their support and prayers during this time. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the family of Kristen Alasandro, 271 Gardner Road, Angier, NC 27501, who is in need of a kidney transplant, and a very beloved niece of Kathy.

Norman Sawyer
Harbinger, NC
Norman Worth Sawyer, 72, of 8746 Caratoke Hwy., Harbinger, NC, died Tuesday, February 21, 2006 at his residence. Born in Blackwater, VA, he was the son of the late Archie and Minnie Cartwright Sawyer. He was a retired tug boat engineer, attended Vineyard Christian Fellowship, and was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps and the Merchant Marines.
Mr. Sawyer is survived by his wife, Barbara Twiford Sawyer of the residence; three sons, Thomas M. Sawyer of Kitty Hawk, NC, and Ty Allen Sawyer and wife Brenda and Chad W. Sawyer and wife Dawn all of Currituck, NC; a sister, Phyllis Richards of Biscoe, NC; a brother, Phillip C. Sawyer of Manteo, NC; and a grandson, Austin Sawyer. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Timothy Norman Sawyer.
A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, February 24, 2006 at 11:00 AM at Lighthouse Christian Fellowship, Kitty Hawk, NC. The family will receive friends at the residence.
