Hilton Austin, died on Friday, April 28, 2006 at his residence. Mr. Austin was born in Hatteras and was a Retired Warrant Officer in the U.S. Navy having served during WWII and the Korean War. He was a member of the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was the widower of Margaret Veronica Downey Austin.

He is survived by his son, William J. Austin of Kill Devil Hills; and three grandchildren, Joel Austin, Kim Marie Austin and Mark Eric Austin.

Funeral Services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. A visitation will be held at Twiford’s Colony Chapel on Sunday, April 30, 2006 from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

Peter Dewey Burgess, III

Peter D. Burgess III, 47, died on April 27, 2006 in Delaware, Ohio. Born August 31, 1958, in Raleigh, North Carolina, he was the son of Peter Dewey and Patricia Davis Burgess of Kitty Hawk, NC and was the husband of Opal M. Burgess of the residence in Delaware, OH. A graduate of Magruder High School in Rockville, Maryland, he worked as a contractor for the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration in Camp Springs, Maryland. He recently moved to Delaware, Ohio with his family.

Besides his wife and parents, he is survived by six children Melanie Burgess of Laurel, MD; Michael Burgess of Rockville, MD, Nina and Karla Montilla and Allyson and Timothy Burgess of Delaware, OH, three sisters Jane C. Burgess of Vienna, VA, Susan L. Burgess of Antioch, CA, and Mary E. Palmer and husband Robert of Kill Devil Hills, NC, and grandmother Mary J. Burgess of Elizabeth City, NC. He is also survived by his former wife Erin Shannon of Germantown, MD and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends.

A service will be conducted at Twiford Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St, Elizabeth City, NC on Monday, May 1, at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Richard Stone of Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church and the Very Rev. James Buchholz, V.F. of Holy Family Catholic Church. The family will receive friends and relatives at Twiford Funeral Home following the service. Interment will be private. Twiford’s is assisting the family with arrangements. Drucilla R. Bulger

Drucilla Rood Bulger, born January 19, 1953 in Poughkeepsie, NY, died Wednesday, April 26, 2006 with her family at her side after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was the beloved daughter of Jean and Howard Meyer of Avon, NC and Clifford Y. Rood of Wappingers Falls, NY. She graduated from Cornwall Central High School in Cornwall on Hudson, NY in 1971 and attended St. Leo College. She was employed by Outer Beaches Realty in Avon for the past 15 years as senior housekeeping supervisor.

She was the adored sister of Marcia O’Neill and husband Thomas of Poughkeepsie, NY; favorite aunt of Emily and Andrew O’Neill and best friend of Deborah C. Martin. She is also survived by a daughter, Alicia Bowman and granddaughter Ashley Bowman both of Lexington, KY; and several aunts and uncles.

She was an inspiration to all who knew her and brought light and joy into their lives.

A memorial service will be conducted at St. Johns United Methodist Church, Avon, NC at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 442, Hatteras, NC 27943.

James Rodney “Jamie” Modlin, Jr.

James Rodney ‘Jamie’ Modlin, Jr., 31 of Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday April 24, 2006. Mr. Modlin was born on October 11, 1974 in Martin County, North Carolina. He was employed with City Beverage Company.

Survivors include his wife; Mable Marie ‘Candie’ Modlin of Elizabeth City; one daughter Amber Modlin; one son Bryan Modlin both of the home; his mother and step-father Tena Alexander Jones and Rip Jones of Elizabeth City, NC; father and step-mother James Rodney Modlin, Sr. and Mary Helen Modlin of Plymouth, NC; two sisters, Caryn Jones of Hertford and Ashely Modlin of Plymouth, NC; three brothers, Paige Modlin of Plymouth, NC, Spanky Jones of Elizabeth City and Alec Jones of Chesapeake Beach, MD; maternal grandparents, Warren and Norma Alexander of Creswell, NC; and paternal grandparents, James Buster and Faye T. Modlin of Jamesville, NC.

A funeral service will be held Friday April 28, at 11:00 AM at Twiford Memorial Chapel with Rev. Steve Strickland officiating. Burial will follow in the New Hollywood Cemetery. James William Latham

James William Latham, 66 of 247 Windwood Drive, Elizabeth City, NC died Tuesday evening (April 25, 2006) in the Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Pasquotank County to the late James T. and Edna Hewitt Latham. Mr. Latham was a retired automotive mechanic and welder.

He is survived by his wife, Connie Sawyer Latham of the home, two daughters, Edna Faye Latham and Pamela Sue Ballance both of Elizabeth City, two sisters, Barbara Denham of Florida and Dorothy Bonk of Charlotte, NC; one brother, Lander Latham of South Mills, NC; four grandchildren, Angela, Alicia, Christopher (Pete) and Angelicia.

The body will be cremated and no services are planned at the present time. The family will receive friends and relatives at their residence, 247 Windwood Drive, Elizabeth City. Tony Keith Burroughs

Tony Keith Burroughs, 41, of 114 Larry Avenue, Grandy, NC., died Saturday, April 22, 2006 at his residence. Mr. Burroughs was born September 19, 1964 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. He was a machine operator with Utilitech Installation Service.

Survivors include his mother and step-father; Estelle Radcliffe Register and Roger Register of Pinetown, NC; two sisters; Paulette B. Race of Edenton, NC and Felecia B. Mason of Washington, NC; a brother Curtis L. Burroughs, Jr. of Greenville, NC. He was preceded in death by his father Curtis Lester Burroughs, Sr.

A graveside memorial service will be held Saturday April 29, at 10:00 A. M. at the Paul Family Cemetery, Jones Bridge Road, Pinetown, NC., with the Rev. William Mobley officiating. Immediately following the service the family will be at the home of his mother, 1680 North Boyd Road, Pinetown.

Charles Hebenstreit

Charles J. Hebenstreit, Jr., of Buxton, NC passed away of a heart attack just shy of his 82nd birthday on April 23, 2006 at Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City, NC.

He is survived by his brother, Jack Hebenstreit and wife Barbara of Frisco, NC and six nieces and three nephews. Chuck spent four years in the U.S. Navy during WWII reaching the rank of Quartermaster First Class aboard the USS Warren and using his skills landing troops during the invasion of a Pacific Island. He skippered his own U.S. Navy ship, a patrol craft in Puerto Rico. After the war he attended LaSalle College in Philadelphia for two years and became a railroad detective for the Pennsylvania Railroad working there for some 18 years before retiring. After the death of his sister 13 years ago, he moved to Hatteras Island and enjoyed island living and the great people who live here. Jack and Barbara would like to express their gratitude and love of every single person who with us are mourning his passing.

A memorial service will take place at Our Lady of the Sea Catholic Church, Buxton, NC at a later date.

Elmer Dale Bloomer

E. Dale Bloomer, 63, of 908 Flora Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died at his residence on Sunday, April 23, 2006. Born in Newport News, Virginia, he was the son of Elmer and Elsie Mendenhall Bloomer of Newport News, VA, and the husband of Karla Etheridge Bloomer of the residence. He was a retired manager of United Insurance Agency, and a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Greenville, NC.

Besides his wife and parents, Mr. Bloomer is survived by; two daughters Kim Rhew and Kelly Ley, both of Danville, VA; two sons Cary Bloomer and Sean Bloomer and wife Michelle, all of Danville, VA; one brother Lynn Bloomer and wife Linda of Alabama; five grandchildren; special aunt Anna Powell of Newport News, VA; and two beloved cats Neek and Kiki. He was predeceased by one brother Paul Bloomer.

A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, April 29, 2006 at 12:00 noon, at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, and officiated by the Rev. David Shirley. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. James C. Pebworth, ‘Jimmy’ died peacefully in his home in Kill Devil Hills on April 22nd after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

He left behind his wife, Dona, his children, Suzanne, Nina, Jimmy, Jr. and John. His grandchildren, Josh, Danny, Caleb, Matt, Joseph and Bailey; his step-children, Stefanie and Kirk; his step grandchildren, Chelsea and Zack; his brother Allen and his best friend of many years, Mike. He was loved by us all, he will be missed by us all.

Patricia Carson

Virginia Beach – Patricia Anne Carson passed away April 24, 2006. She was born in Bethel, NC to the late Jessie and Geneva Carson. Ms. Carson was a Graduate of East Carolina University and received her masters from Old Dominion University. She was a member of the ADK Sorority and taught in the Virginia Beach Public Schools for 36 years.
