Roy E. Meeks

Norfolk ‘ Roy Edward Meeks, 84, died March 31, 2006. Mr. Meeks was born in Bridgeport, CT to the late Thomas Johns and Eleanor Elizabeth Reeves Meeks. He was a veteran having served in the US Army as a Tank Gunner during WWII. He fought in the battle of the Bulge and was a Purple Heart recipient. Mr. Meeks later retired from the Navy Transport Office. He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Hilda Childress Meeks, a sister, Mildred Futrell and a brother Herbert Meeks.
Left to cherish his memory are his sisters, Ruth F. Wieting of VA Beach, Violet Bradford and husband Melvin of VA Beach, and Frances E. Ragan of Louisville, KY; and a host of nieces, nephews and other family members.
Graveside services with military honors will be held on Saturday at 1:00 pm at Forest Lawn Cemetery with Rev. Keith Martin officiating. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Colonial Chapel, 929 Battlefield Blvd., South, Chesapeake, VA on Friday from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. Robert Gordon Brothers, Sr.

ROBERT GORDON BROTHERS, SR., 72 of Elizabeth City, NC died in the Albemarle Hospital, Tuesday, May 30, 2006. He was the son of the late Marshall Bell and Grace Bell Brothers and was the husband of Almarie Midgett Brothers. Mr. Brothers was a farmer and was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Other than his wife he is survived by one daughter, Robin Brothers of Charleston, SC; two sons, Robert G. Brothers, Jr. of Elizabeth City, NC, James Brothers of Atlanta, GA. and 2 grandchildren.

A graveside service will be Friday, June 2, 2006 at 11:00 am in Old Hollywood Cemetery with Mason Smith officiating. The family will be receiving friends at the residence, 1154 Perkins Lane, Elizabeth City, NC 27909. Gussie Morgan Layden
Native of Pasquotank County, NC

Mrs. Gussie Morgan Layden, age 89, of the 2400 block of West Main Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, May 30, 2006 at Guardian Care Nursing Home. Mrs. Layden, a native of Pasquotank County, was the daughter of the late John Shelton Morgan and Sophia Pritchard Morgan and the widow of Harry Hoggard Layden. She was a homemaker and a member of Corinth Baptist Church.

Mrs. Layden is survived by a daughter, Charlotte Barclift of Elizabeth City, NC; a son, Edwin G. Layden of Elizabeth City, NC; two granddaughters, Rhonda Twiddy and husband David, and Renee L. Barclift, all of Elizabeth City, NC; two step-great granddaughters; and one step-great great grandson. She was predeceased by three sisters, Helen Harris, Ella Mae Winslow and Carrie Brothers; a brother, Shelton R. Morgan; and a son-in-law Thomas Barclift.

Funeral services will be Thursday, June 1, 2006, at 11:00 AM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. David Turner officiating. A private burial will follow in Old Hollywood Cemetery. Leo James Anderson

CDR USN RET. Leo James Anderson, 84, of Canvasback Drive, Bells Island, NC. died Friday May 26, 2006 at the Sentara Barco Nursing Center.

Mr. Anderson was born May 28, 1921 in Albany, NY., and was the son of Edward J. Anderson and Florence Loretta Tregoning Anderson.

He was a Retired U. S. Navy CDR with twenty-six years of service, a graduate of the U. S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kingspoint, and Georgetown University.

Survivors include his wife; Josephine Jarvis Anderson, daughters: Elizabeth Fedde of Lincoln, NE., Carol Anderson of Okinawa, Japan and Martha Rando of Northfield, NJ., six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother Richard E. Anderson.

A mass of Resurrection will be held Thursday, June 1, at 10:00 AM in Our Lady of Annunciation Catholic Church in Queensbury, NY. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, South Glens Falls, NY.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Currituck County, Library Fund, Barco, NC 27917.

Maurice L. Ford, 79, of 2079 New Hope Road, Hertford, NC died Sunday, May 28, 2006, in the Martin County General Hospital, Williamston, NC. Mr. Ford was born in Quapaw, OK to the late Thomas and Georgia Ellis Ford and grew-up in Northern California. He retired after 21 years of dedicated service from the U. S. C. G. as an E-6, a member of the Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Church and a 35-year member of the A. A.

Mr. Ford is survived by his wife, Anna Cahoon Ford of the home, three daughters, Debra Sullivan of Osprey, Fl., Linda David of Kalispell, Mt., Sandra Prosser of Sparks, NV; three sons, Derek Ford, Randy Ford both of Kalispell, MT, Roger Ford of Paradise, CA; two step daughters, Lynn Bryan of Jacksonville, FL and Iris Dennis of Sautee, GA; one step son, Gerald Hutchinson of Albany, MO. He is also survived by two sisters, Marge Love of Carnegie, OK and Arrah Houseman of CA; two half-brothers, Merle Smock of Roosevelt, UT and Frank Smock of CA; 19 grandchildren, 6 step grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and 4 step great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday, May 31, 2006, at 11:00am in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery by Bishop David Pritchard. Lola Meekins

Lola H. Meekins, 95, of North End Road, Avon, NC., died Friday May 26, 2006 at the Guardian Care Nursing Home in Elizabeth City, NC.

She was born January 6, 1911 in Avon, NC., and was the eldest daughter of David Fields and Menvil Gray Meekins. She was preceded in death by her brothers Walton Chauncey Meekins, Charles Fields Meekins, Milton Barnes Meekins and Horace Brooks Meekins, as well as her sister Merian Hall Meekins.

Survivors include; one sister Menvil Brooksie Kuhl of Elizabeth City, NC., several nieces and nephews including: David Meekins of Virginia Beach, VA., Barbara Austin of Avon, NC.,Olga Infanti of Staten Island, NY., and Herbert Kuhl of Elizabeth City, NC.

Lola was a lifelong member of the St. John of Avon, NC., and at the time of her death was the oldest living member. She was dedicated to her family, taking care of her parents and brother Charlie until their passing, as well as being her father’s assistant in his general store in Avon.

A funeral service will be held Monday May 29, at 11:00 A. M. at the St. John’s United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Susan Fitch-Slater officiating. Burial will be in the Meekins Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends prior to the funeral service at St. John’s United Methodist Church from 9:30 A. M. until the funeral hour.

Camden County Resident

Mary Hamrick Creel, age 71, of 206 Riverview Ave., Camden, NC, died Friday, May 26, 2006 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Webster Springs, WV, the daughter of the late Ramon Granville and Golda McAvoy Hamrick and was the wife of Luther Venson Creel of the residence. Mrs. Creel was the former co-owner of Whitehurst Insurance Agency, a retired budget officer for Elizabeth City State University and was a member of Hiss Methodist Church in Baltimore, MD. She was an active member of the River City Lions Club, a past president of the Lioness 31 J District, helped with the Lions Pin Sales for clinical eye research, a member of the Melvin Jones Fellows within the Lions, and was the first, Fifth Progessive of the Jack Stickley Fellowship in the NC Lions Foundation Incorporated.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Creel is survived by a daughter, Debbie Bland and husband Ray of Camden, NC; two sons, Wade Creel and wife Frances of Elizabeth City, NC, and Keith Creel of Camden, NC; and three grandchildren, Jeremiah, Sarah, and Jesse LaMorte. Mrs. Creel was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Hamrick.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, June 1, 2006 at 2:00 pm in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Dr. Melvin Styons, Homer Styons, and David Rhodes officiating. Entombment will follow at West Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends Wednesday evening from 6:30 until 8:30 at the funeral home and at other times at the residence. Roger ‘Erbe’ Cahoon, Sr.

Virginia Beach ‘ Roger ‘Erbe’ Cahoon, 74, passed away on May 23, 2006. Mr. Cahoon was born in East Lake, NC to the late Wilbur Wright Cahoon and Christine Simmons.
He was devoted to the love of his life Mattie, for over 54 years. He loved his son and daughters, grandchildren and great grandchild. He was a member of Heritage Community Church and lived out his faith to the fullest. He purposed to share his love for God everyday. He served faithfully as an ordained deacon for over forty years. Mr. Cahoon worked in masonry construction for many years and was successful in business. He loved fishing, hunting and being outdoors.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife Mattie Bell Cahoon; daughters, Pam LeMaster and husband Clint of Virginia Beach, Connie Lowe and husband Asa of Chesapeake; Son, Roger Cahoon, Jr., and wife Connie of Virginia Beach; sisters, Marceline Basnight, Ella Mae Ambrose, Faye Terry; brothers, Norman Cahoon, Miller Cahoon; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mr. Cahoon is predeceased by his brother Herman Cahoon.
Services will be Friday, May 26, 2006 at 1:00 pm at Heritage Community Church, 513 Johnstown Road, Chesapeake. Burial will follow the service at Colonial Grove. Dora Etheridge

Dora Cartwright Etheridge, 82, of Barco, NC and formerly of South Mills, NC died Saturday, May 27, 2006, in the Sentara Barco Nursing Center. Mrs. Etheridge was born in Pasquotank County, NC to the late Daniel Webster and Annie Mae Russell Cartwright and was the widow of the late S. Marvin Etheridge. She was a retired seamstress and a member of the South Mills United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Etheridge is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Willie Lee Jones

Willie Lee Jones, 77, of 100 Forrest Skipper Drive, Elizabeth City, NC., died Thursday May 25, 2006 at his residence.

Mr. Jones was born August 28, 1928 in Nash County, NC., and was the son of the late Jiles E. and Annie Perry Jones.

He was a veteran of the U. S. Army/Air Force, and a retired carpenter with Haskett Construction Company. On July 19, 1948 he was married to June Creef Jones.

Survivors include his wife; June Creef Jones, daughter Ann J. Harrington and her husband Carl of Camden, NC., sons Glenn ‘Rock’ Jones and Tony Jones and his wife Susan of Elizabeth City, NC., and Pat Jones of Camden, NC. sister; Nellie Jones of Chesapeake, VA., special cousin William Rumbley and a sister-in-law Lillian Reid both of Elizabeth City, NC., twelve grandchildren; Carla, Susan, Melanie, Carrie, Ashley, Kimberly, Sylvia, Michael Jr., Keith, Kelli, Brent and Amy, two step-grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by; sons Buddy Jones and Oogie Jones and brother Ruben Jones.

A funeral service will be held Sunday May 28, at 2:00 P. M. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Park Cemetery.
