Margaret James
MARGARET REBECCA LUTON JAMES, died Monday morning, June 26 in Elizabeth City, N.C. The family will receive friends at the home of Tommy and Norma James, 320 Esclip Rd., Weeksville on Saturday, July 1 from 1 to 4 in the afternoon.
Margaret was born November 7, 1915, to Mary Morris and John Anderson Luton in Symonds Creek. She was the next-to-last of nine children all of whom predeceased her. Margaret enjoyed reminiscing about her early life and even as she became a victim of dementia she enjoyed pointing out the early homes of family members on driving trips through the country. Her father died when she was quite young but she was always proud of the fact that he built homes, had a sawmill and installed electricity in her home long before it was available to others. She played basketball in high school and remembered with pride when her small high school team beat the much larger Elizabeth City team. Until the end of her life Margaret could recite the lines from ‘Thanatopsis’ by William Cullen Bryant, ‘So live, that when thy summons comes” which she had learned as a student in school, and her favorite goodbye to family members was always, ‘I love you a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck.’
She married Bennie T. James in 1933 and they settled in Weeksville where she lived until a few years after his death in 1968. She, who had never worked in finance, opened a highly successful sandwich shop with a cousin in the Virginia Dare Hotel. She loved working with people and spent summers working as a waitress at the Carolina Hotel in Nags Head. She felt fortunate to be able to travel with friends before her health failed. She had wonderful friends whom she loved and she was a loving mother and grandmother to her family. She was preceded in death by her son Bennie T. James, Jr. Suvivors include a son, Charles Henry James of Chapel Hill and his wife Betty as well as grandchildren Tommy James and wife Norma of Weeksville, Donna Spivey and husband Mike of Elizabeth City, Becky James of Fletcher, N.C. and Libby Barrington of Clemmons, N.C. She also is survived by six great-grandchildren. Christopher and Anthony Spivey, Travis, Justin, and Taylor James, and Zoe Barrington.
It is suggested that flowers be omitted. Rather, memorials may be directed to the Diabetes Association or to the charity of one’s choice.
