PHILLIP EDWARD STEPHENSON, 41 of Elizabeth City, NC died in the Albemarle Hospital, Sunday, July 30, 2006. He was the son of Elaine Hughes Van Duren and the late Alfred Adam Stephenson. He was a Truck Driver.
Other than his mother he is survived by two daughters, Susan Toler and Rachel Toler of Elizabeth City, NC and one son, Vernon Taylor of Elizabeth City, NC; a step father, Robert Van Duren of Elizabeth City, NC; a brother, Jeff Stephenson of Elizabeth City, NC; and one grandchild, Amyah Taylor.
A Graveside Service will be Wednesday, August 2, 2006 at 11:00 AM at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Bill Bailey officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives in the lobby of the funeral home Tuesday evening from 7 to 8 PM and other times at the residence of his brother, 342 Frog Island Road, Elizabeth City, NC.

Elexa Zaner White Crain
ELEXA ZANER CRAIN, 84, 406 West Fearing Street, Elizabeth City, NC died Sunday July 30, 2006, at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Charles Edward and Elizabeth Wright White and was the wife of the late Joseph William Crain. Mrs. Crain had been previously employed at the Elizabeth City Cotton Mill as a Spooler.
Survivors include her daughter; Donnie Mae Crain of Elizabeth City, NC; three sisters, Elizabeth Midget of Elizabeth City, NC, Bonnie West and Dixie Lacy both of Norfolk, VA; a brother Danny White of Norfolk, VA; six grandchildren; Mitchell ‘Michael’ Blackledge, Joey Blackledge, Tammy Cartwright, Stacey Combs, Lisa Overton and Rhonda Graham; nine great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Patricia (Pat) Crain, Connie Faye Crain; one son, Joseph (Joe) Crain; two sisters, Addie Spruill, Helen Hewitt, two brothers, James (Big Brother) White and Earl White.
A funeral service will be Wednesday, August 2, 2006 at 2:00 P. M. in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Rev. Stuart Meads officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives at Twiford Funeral Home, Tuesday evening from 6 to 7 P. M. and at their residence, 406 West Fearing Street. Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery.

Desmond Alexander “D.A.” Rogers
Manteo, NC
Desmond Alexander Rogers, Jr. (D.A.), 69, the son of the late Doris and Desmond A. Rogers, Sr., died on July 30, 2006 at Duplin County Hospital in Kenansville, NC. He was the retired owner of Desro Used Trucks and was a former Ayden Collard Eating Champion. He was a member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church in Manteo.
Mr. Rogers is survived by his three loving daughters, Annette and husband , Reverend Doctor Jerry A. Jackson of Goldsboro, NC, Charlene and husband Michael Mann of Manns Harbor, NC, and Robin Marie and husband Michael Lyne of Richmond, VA; a sister, Betty Rae Rogers of Williamston, NC; a nephew, Clarence Gibbs of Manteo, NC and ten grandchildren.
A Service of Death and Resurrection will be held on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 at 11:00 AM at Twiford’s Colony Chapel in Manteo with the Reverend Doctor Jerry A. Jackson officiating. Burial will follow at Manteo Cemetery. Harold Zaler
HAROLD EDWARD ZALER, 55 of 356 Frog Island Road, Elizabeth City, NC died Friday, July 28, 2006. Mr Zaler was born in Meridan, CT, the son of Evelyn Worcester and the late Stanley Zaler. He worked for 7-11 and Jackson Hewitt.
Harold is survived by his mother, Ms. Worcester From Wallingford, NC; his wife and best friend of 27 years, Geri Zaler and his son Earle Zaler of the residence. He was the brother of David Zaler, Sr. of East Hampton and the late Walter Zaler. He was the uncle of Anna Davis of Boston, MA and several other nieces and nephews.
Harold loved people, helping them and making them laugh. He touched the lives of everyone he met and will be sadly missed by all.
A Funeral Service will be Thursday, August 3, 2006 at 2:00 pm at the Seventh Day Adventist Church with Doug Simons officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives in the lobby of the funeral home Wednesday evening from 7 to 8 PM. The burial will be at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Charles Thomas Williams, III

CHARLES THOMAS WILLIAMS, III of Avon, died Saturday, July 29, 2006 in Elizabeth City. Mr. Williams was born in Avon and was a retired realtor and also was self employed in the grocery and plumbing business. Mr. Williams pioneered the tourist business in Avon starting two businesses, the Avon Service Center and the Avon Motel. Mr. Williams was a wonderful husband, father and provider and a loving ‘granddaddy’ who also loved his pets. Known as ‘Big Charles’ he was a generous man and friend to everyone. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved his community of Avon. Mr. Williams was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church and a member of Cape Hatteras Masonic Lodge # 698 AF&AM. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Coast Guard.
He was the son of the late Charles T. and Iantha O’Neal Williams and the husband of Bonita Austin Williams.
Besides his wife, surviving are his daughter, Annette Williams O’Neal of Frisco; two sons, Michael Williams and Charles T. Williams IV both of Avon; four sisters, Retta Quidley, Vera Meekins, Gloria O’Neal and Velma Barnette all of Avon; one brother, Gerald Williams of Avon; six grandchildren, Keith Williams, Andrew Williams, Kate Williams, Hannah Williams, Matthew Williams and Dustin Peele; two step-grandchildren, Warren O’Neal and Lindsey O’Neal; and five great grandchildren. Mr. Williams was pre-deceased by his sister Beatrice Hooper.
A celebration of life will be held Monday, July 30, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. in St. John’s United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dwight Burrus and Rev. Bryan Gray. Burial will be in the family cemetery in Avon. Friends may join the family in St. John’s United Methodist Church, Sunday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. John’s United Methodist Church. Twiford’s Island Chapel Hatteras is assisting the family.

Chesapeake ‘ Cynthia Kay DeSilvester, 48, passed away peacefully, July 26, 2006 at Chesapeake General Hospital.
Cynthia was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed fishing, swimming and caring for her grandson, Cameron.
Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband, Bob; her two sons, Sean and Curtis; her grandson, Cameron; her sister, Vicki; and several nieces and nephews all of Chesapeake.
She is predeceased by her parents Alvin and Jackie Jaiser.
Services will be at Twiford’s Colonial Chapel, 929 S. Battlefield Blvd., Chesapeake, Monday at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at Rosewood Memorial Park. Chesapeake ‘ Ella Mae Brickhouse, 91, passed away July 28, 2006. She was born in Norfolk County, VA to the late Jeramiah Perkins and Martha Ellen Brothers Miles.
Mrs. Brickhouse is predeceased by her husband George Eddie Brickhouse. Left to cherish her memory are her son, Collie F. Brickhouse Sr. and wife Doris of Chesapeake; two grandchildren, Collie F. (Frank) Brickhouse Jr. and wife Tammie of Chesapeake, Joan B. Higgins and husband Kevin of Nederland, TX; two great grandchildren, Erin Leigh Higgins, Collie F. (Trey) Brickhouse III and wife Debra; one great great grandson, Matthew Franklin Brickhouse; and two nephews, John E. Perkins Jr., and James H. Everton.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, July 31, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at Chesapeake Memorial Gardens in Chesapeake, VA The family would like to thank the staff of Sentara Nursing Center, Chesapeake for all their care.. Victor L. “Vic” Davis, Jr.

Victor ‘Vic’ Davis, Jr. went to be with his Lord and Savior on July 26, 2006. He was born in Portsmouth, VA on November 28, 1938 to the late Victor L. Davis, Sr. and Hilda L. Davis. He was a lifetime resident of Tidewater Virginia and North Carolina. He managed and worked in the Automotive and Truck parts businesses throughout the Virginia/Carolina area for many years. He was owner and operator of Vic’s Pool Service of the Outer Banks. He was the beloved husband of the late Jackie C. Davis, and was pre-deceased by his sister, Sandra L. Davis, his brother, John D. Davis, and his sister, Linda D. Culpepper.
He is survived by his three loving children, Victor L. Davis, III and wife, Denise of Wanchese, Robin Davis of Durham, Jill Szalaj and husband, Jeff of Garner; grandchildren, Matthew Davis of Wanchese, Christopher and Michael Parker of Durham, Kristin Parker of Rocky Mount, Mackenzie Davis of Durham, Morgan and Mason Szalaj of Garner; brothers, Robert Davis and Jeff Davis of Virginia Beach; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Carol and Lenny Ransdell of Virginia Beach and a host of relatives and friends throughout Virginia and North Carolina. Victor was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He never met a stranger and was a remarkable friend to all.
A Service of Remembrance will be held at Twiford Colony Chapel, Manteo on Sunday, July 30, 2006 at 2:00 pm.

Alfred “Chief” Pugh

Alfred ‘Chief’ Smith Pugh, 76, died Tuesday, July 25, 2006. He was born in Dare County, NC to the late Nancy Pugh Austin. Mr. Pugh was a retired chief engineer with the NCDOT Ferry Division and was a veteran having served in the Korean Conflict where he earned several medals of honor.
Mr. Pugh is survived by a brother, Wilton R. Pugh and wife Madelyn of Baltimore, MD; two nieces, Bonny Kuklica and husband Jim of Virginia Beach, VA and their children Amber and Aaron Kuklica and Lynda Davis and husband Richard of Springfield, VA and their two sons. Besides his mother, he was preceded in death by a sister, Inez Payne.
A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, July 28, 2006 at 11:00 AM at Clarks Bethel United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dr. Susie Fitch-Slater and the Rev. Stafford Berry. Burial will be in the family cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Thursday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. Mary Baum Kam
Mary Baum Kam, 60, of 718 Glade Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at Guardian Care Nursing Home. She was born in Elizabeth City, NC, the daughter of the late Hezekiah Daniel and Mary John Ferrell Baum and was the wife of Frankie Kam of the residence. She was a member of Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church, and attended Holy Family Catholic Church, a member of the Glade Road Community Watch Program, and was an avid angel ornament collector, as well as enjoyed working with arts and crafts.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Kam is survived by a sister, Viola Scaff and husband Billy of Elizabeth City, NC; five brothers, Bill Baum and wife Cheryl of Kingsley, MI, Jackie Baum and wife Anita of Traverse City, MI, Johnnie Baum and wife Dawn of Watertown, NY, Charlie Baum and wife Nancy of Camden, NC and Pete Baum and wife Nellie of Elizabeth City, NC; and special friends, John and Lynne Ryan of Chesapeake, VA, Hattie Etheridge of Elizabeth City, NC, and Leonard and Fumiko Batungbacal of Honolulu, HI, and several aunts, nieces, and nephews. Mrs. Baum was preceded in death by two brothers, Roy and Bryan Baum.
