Harry C. Deiss, 81, of 109 South Marshall Road, Shawboro, NC, died Thursday, August 31, 2006 at Guardian Care Nursing Home in Elizabeth City. He was the husband of Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Bounds Deiss. Born in Dover, DE, he was the son of the late Harry C. Deiss, Sr. and Daisy Deiss. Mr. Deiss was retired from the U.S. Navy and Grand Furniture. He served his country in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.

Beside his wife of 59 years, he is survived by a daughter Dawn E. Belmont and husband Bill of Carlotta, CA; two sons, Eric C. Deiss and wife Joan of Virginia Beach, VA, and John H. Deiss and wife Suzanne of Nags Head, NC; five grandchildren, Lisa K. Loy, Eric C. Deiss, II, William R. Belmont, IV, Amanda Belmont Bice, and Jackie Sue Deiss; three great grandchildren, Rebecca Loy, Robbie Loy, and William R. Belmont, V; and a host of nieces and nephews. Mr. Deiss was preceded in death by his sister, Ida E. White, and brother-in-law, B.G. Gateley.

Melvin Thomas “Tommy” Powers

Melvin Thomas ‘Tommy’ Powers, 61, of Evans Drive, Grandy, N. C. died Tuesday August 29, 2006 at the Hampton Veterans Hospital.

Mr. Powers was a former employee of the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, member of the Coinjock American Legion Post # 288, and a veteran of the U. S. Army having served during the Vietnam Conflict. He was preceded in death by his mother Mildred Inez Mizelle Powers, and his brothers Buddy Powers and Frank Powers.

He is survived by his father, Lloyd Monds of Elizabeth City, N. C. his daughters, Sandra ‘Sandy’ Tipton and her husband Eddie of Grandy, N. C., Amy Marriner and her husband Stacy of Elizabeth City, N. C., Teresa Sears of Jarvisburg, N. C. and step-daughter, Sandra Kent and her husband Brian of Poplar Branch, N. C., sisters, Judy Wooten and Sandra Kline both of Elizabeth City, N. C., Inez Sawyer of Moyock, N. C. and Patricia McPherson of Camden, N. C. grandchildren, Chris Saunders, Cayla Tipton, Heather Carwright, Cody Sears, Kayre White, Candi White, Roy Marriner and Cameron Kent.

A memorial graveside service will be held Sunday September 3, at 2:00
P. M. at West Lawn Cemetery with Dennis Crehan officiating. Military honors will be rendered by V. F. W. Post # 6060

The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6:00 P. M. to 8:00 P.M. at Twiford Funeral Home, 405 East Church Street, and other times at the home of his daughter and son-in-law Sandy and Eddie Tipton, 104 Admiralty Court, Grandy, N. C.

Charles “Roy” Miller

Charles Leroy ‘Roy’ Miller, age 89, of the 800 block of Agawan Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, August 29, 2006, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Miller, a native of Pasquotank County, was the son of the late John Wood Miller and Sallie White Miller. He and Lucy Pauline Moore Miller were married for sixty-one years. He was the former President of Production Credit Association of Elizabeth City, a member of First United Methodist Church, the Improved Order of Red Men Pasquotank Tribe # 8, the Eureka Masonic Lodge # 53 AF & AM, and the Scottish Rites New Bern Consistory # 3.

Besides his wife he is survived by a foster daughter, Dawn Broyles, and husband Billy, of Elizabeth City, NC; and a foster son, Greg Twiddy, and wife Pat, of Elizabeth City, NC.

A funeral service will be Thursday, August 31, 2006, at 2:00 PM at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Frese officiating. Burial will be in Old Hollywood Cemetery. Charlotte Robinson Schneider Gray, 79, of Buxton, NC died Tuesday, August 29, 2006 in Chesapeake, VA. Mrs. Gray was born in Vineland, NJ and was a retired bookkeeper for the Navy Exchange. She was a member of the Buxton United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of the Angler’s Club and was a Past Worthy Matron, a Past Grand Representative and a former Secretary in the Order of Eastern Star. She was the daughter of the late George and Emma Robinson Schneider.

Mrs. Gray is survived by her husband, Elmore Ross Gray of the residence; a daughter, Karen Benton and husband, Tom of Chesapeake, VA; a son, Sonny Gray and wife, Melody of Midlothian, VA; a sister, Emma Watson and a brother, Paul Schneider, both of New Jersey; two grandchildren, Michelle Milstead and husband, John of Midlothian, VA and Ross Benton of Chesapeake, VA; and one great-grandson, Jack Milstead of Midlothian, VA.

Funeral services will be held at the Buxton United Methodist Church on Thursday, August 31, 2006 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Charles Moseley officiating. Burial will be in the Gray Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Wednesday evening from 7:00 to 8:00 pm.

Issac Tristan Ferracci, 3 ‘ months old son of N. Paul Ferracci, III and Tabetha Lynn Young Ferracci, of 103 Pike Court, Grandy, NC, died Saturday, August 26, 2006 in Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City, NC.

Besides his parents, he is survived by a sister, Tatum Nicole Ferracci of Grandy, NC; a brother, Mason Conner Ferracci of Federalsburg, MD, his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ned P. Ferracci, Jr. of Elizabeth City, NC, and Mr. and Mrs. James Harrison of Camden, NC; Maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wamsley, Kill Devil Hills, NC; great paternal grandmothers, Vickie Ferracci of Mississippi, Sarah Fortune of Elizabeth City, NC and Louise Pinner of Grandy, NC.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, Sept. 1, 2006, at 1:00 P.M. in Twiford Memorial Chapel, Church St., Elizabeth City by Pastor Bill Thorn. Lela Marion Gaither Caldwell

Mrs. Lela Marion Gaither Caldwell, age 84, of 2074 Rivershore Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday, August 24, 2006 at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. Mrs. Caldwell, a native of Statesville, NC, was the daughter of the late John Martin Gaither and Beatrice Mildred Chausse Gaither and the widow of William Clayton Caldwell, Jr. She was a homemaker and a member of Cann Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Caldwell is survived by a son, William C. ‘Bill’ Caldwell, III, of Elizabeth City, NC; and a brother John Martin Gaither of Gainesville, GA. She was predeceased by a sister, Teresa G. Everhart.

LeRoy ‘LE’ Thomas Lind, 54, of 736 Firetower Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital on Saturday, August 26, 2006. Born in New Jersey, he was the husband of Darlene Jones Lind. Mr. Lind was a retired employee of a child support agency in the state of Maryland. He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.

Besides his wife, Mr. Lind is survived by: two sons, Mark Lind and Joshua Lind, both of Maryland; two stepsons, Derek and wife, Wendy Levesque and Travis Levesque, both of Elizabeth City, NC; and two step grandchildren.

Ernest Columbus Doxey

Ernest Columbus Doxey, age 89, of 1820 North Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, August 26, 2006, at his residence. Mr. Doxey, a native of Currituck County, NC, was the son of the late Columbus Doxey and Ola Belangia Doxey and the widower of Dorothy Brothers Doxey and Julia Boothe Doxey. He was the last surviving of his brothers and sisters. He was a retired timber surveyor and a member of Berea Baptist Church.

Mr. Doxey is survived by a daughter, Barbara Doxey of Elizabeth City, NC; two granddaughters, Teresa, and husband Eric, Clary and Pamela Stone; and two great granddaughters, Alex Clary and Julia Vallas.

Jane Haun Lorentz

Jane Haun Lorentz, 78, 136 Canvasback Drive, Currituck, NC, died Saturday, August 26, 2006 at Sentara Nursing Center, Currituck. She was born in Staunton, VA, the daughter of the late Alger and Mary Sue Bowman Haun and was the wife of Frank William Lorentz of the residence.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Lorentz is survived by a son, John W. Lorentz and wife Dillas of Currituck, NC; a daughter, Dorothy Caciedo and husband Michael Jacobs of Manassas, VA; and three grandchildren, Alexandra, Christina, and Chase Lorentz. Mrs. Lorentz was preceded in death by a brother, John B. Haun.

James Heath

James N. Heath
James Needham Heath was born to James Humphries and Maggie Needham Heath on Jan. 28, 1922, in Elizabeth City, N.C. He graduated from Elizabeth City High and later earned courses toward a college degree. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on July 17, 1940. He was part of the Normandy Invasion Force, serving under General Patton’s 3rd Armor Division, where he rose to the rank of Master Sergeant. In this position he participated in the liberation force, marching through Europe, ending in Berlin with the conclusion of World War II. After World War II, he had an Honorable Discharge from the Army but re-enlisted in 1947 and was enrolled in Officer Candidate School, graduating as a First Lieutenant. He rose through the ranks and retired as a Major in 1962. Upon retirement, he was employed with the U.S. government and was in a supervisory position on the Pershing Missile Development Program at the missile test facility in Aberdeen, Md. He remained there until retirement from Civil Service in 1977. He and his wife moved to Charleston, S.C., where he remained until 1990, moving a year after the death of his wife, Sadie. His move brought him to Orange Park, Fla., where he became an active resident in the community. He was very involved in the Civitan Club of Orange Park, serving several terms as President and as a Regional Director. He was also a vibrant member of the Orange Park United Methodist Church and was very active in many activities and positions within the church. He participated in numerous local charity events such as the Special Olympics, holding bingo sessions at a local nursing home and the Clothes Closet. He was predeceased by his wife, Sadie Bundy Heath and son, Jim Heath. He has a surviving sister, Verdie Tyner, residing in North Carolina, and daughter, Nancy H. Stasinis and her husband, John, who live in Kingsland, Ga. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. today at Hardage-Giddens Rivermead Funeral Home, 950 Park Ave., Orange Park, Fla. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Orange Park United Methodist Church with Pastor Will Clark officiating. Burial will be at Highland Park Cemetery in Elizabeth City.
