> Virginia Beach ‘ John Henry ‘Hammer’ Whitehurst, 58, passed away peacefully at his home on October 29, 2006. He was the son of the late Grover and Ruth Whitehurst. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Estelle W. Freeman, and a brother Grover W. Whitehurst. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Alta Midgett Whitehurst, daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Keith Oxley, granddaughter Taylor Oxley, sister Lorraine Dozier and her husband Jimmy; brother Michael Whitehurst and his wife Penny, brother-in-law, Joseph (Sonny) Freeman, sister ‘in- law Marsha Whitehurst, brother-in-law Eddie ‘Cruiser’ Midgett, seven nieces and nephews and his cherished ‘boys’ Hammer and Bear Dog.
> A friend to many, he was also a star high school athlete. In addition to spending his free time with family and friends, he also enjoyed a deep passion for the game of golf. John Henry will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
> Funeral services will be held at Twiford Colonial Chapel, 929 S. Battlefield, Chesapeake on Thursday at 11:00 AM., with Rev. John J. Boyer officiating. Christian Lee Williams, infant son of Andrew Branch Williams and Angela Gayle Tillett, died Friday, October 27, 2006 at the Outer Banks Hospital.
Besides his parents, Christian is survived by a sister, Lillian Mae Williams; paternal grandparents, Michael and Kathy Williams of Avon; and maternal grandparents, Kenny and Ann Tillett of Wanchese.
A private family graveside service will be held on Wednesday, November 1, 2006 in Avon.

John Dawson Smith
John Dawson Smith, 81, of South Currituck Road, Currituck, N. C. died Friday October 27, 2006 at the Sentara Leigh Hospital.
Mr. Smith was born September 16, 1925 in Beaufort County, Washington, N. C. and was the son of the late James Edgar Smith and Pearlie Garris Smith. He was a retired veteran of the U. S. Navy having served during World War II and the Korean Conflict, and a retired civil service employee. He was a member of the Pilmoor United Methodist Church, he was Master Mason and member of the Norfolk Royal Arch Chapter # 1.
Survivors include his wife, Emma Lee Clark Smith, daughter, Mellony Smith of Norfolk, VA, son, Donald Dawson Smith and his wife Mary Killen Smith of Mt. Pleasant, S. C., brothers, Carl W. Smith of Washington, N. C. and William ‘Billy’ Austin Smith of Hampton, VA, six grandchildren, Hallie Detmer, Dawson Spessard Smith, Brian Keith Banks, Darlene Waters, Ginger Craig and Jack Killen Smith, and eleven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Sunday October 29th at 3:00 P. M. at the Pilmoor United Methodist Church with Rev. Scott Wilson-Parsons.
Following the memorial service the family will receive friends at the residence.

Mrs. Helen Rose Furlough Mitchell, 77, of Camden, NC, went to be with her Lord on Thursday, October 26, 2006. Mrs. Mitchell, a native of Washington County, NC, was the daughter of the late Leonard Bembridge Spruill and Maggie Augusta Sawyer Spruill and the widow of Thurman Mitchell.
Mrs. Mitchell is survived by a daughter, Peggy Noblitt and husband Terry of Camden, NC; and two sons, Ashby Furlough and wife Ruth Ann of Washington, NC, and Gary Furlough and wife Suzanne of Ayden, NC; a sister, Faye Swails; a brother, Derl Spruill and wife Janet; four grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and many special friends.

Native of Lynchburg, VA
Sylvia Gail Hudson, age 52, of the 400 block of South Hughes Boulevard, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, October 24, 2006 at Guardian Care Nursing Home. She was a native of Lynchburg, VA, and the daughter of Mary Moore Sawyer of Elizabeth City, NC, and the late Lawrence Curtis Hudson. She was a Baptist and a newspaper carrier.
Besides her mother she is survived by three sisters, Phyllis Hardison of Manteo, NC, Bonnie Sawyer of Elizabeth City, NC, and Linda Clisso of Denton, TX; three nieces, Nicole Gear of Manteo, NC, Jennifer Basnight and Brittany Clisso both of Denton, TX; four nephews, Keith Sawyer of Norfolk, VA, Dennis Sawyer and Curtis Sawyer both of Elizabeth City, NC, and Buddy Basnight of Denton, TX.

Joyce Liverman Elliott
Mrs. Joyce Liverman Elliott, age 72, of 115 Driftwood Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday, October 20, 2006 at her residence. Mrs. Elliott, a native of Norfolk, VA, was the daughter of the late Charles E. Liverman and Myrtle Pierce Liverman, and the wife of William Thomas Elliott of the residence. She was a retired computer technician, and for many years a member and a past president of Ladies Auxiliary of Fraternal Order of Eagles 3204.
Besides her husband she is survived by three daughters, Lynn and Greg Atwood, Donna McNulty, and Linda and Herbert Elliott; four sons, Robbie and Angie Smith, Bobby and Donna Elliott, Scott and Tracy Smith, and Danny Elliott; a brother, Terry Liverman; twenty grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be Wednesday, October 25, 2006, at 11:00 AM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Grace Wood officiating. Sally Smith Driver, 52, of 213 Windwood Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, October 21, 2006 at Albemarle Hospital. Born a native of Pasquotank County, she was the daughter of Ann Blake Tilley of Elizabeth City, NC, and the late James Andrew Smith. She was the wife of James W. Driver of the residence and worked as an optical manager.
Besides her husband and mother, Mrs. Driver is survived by two brothers, Allen Smith and wife Brenda of Elizabeth City, NC and Jeff Smith of Camden, NC.

MELBA WISE HOOPER, 86, passed away on Friday, October 20, 2006. She was the daughter of the late George and Minnie Wise. Mrs. Hooper was preceded in death by her husband, Horace B. Hooper, Sr. and a son, Eddie Leigh Hooper and brother, George Wise, Jr.
She is survived by one son, Horace B. Hooper, Jr. and wife, Verna, three grandchildren, Shaun Hooper and wife, Angie, Amanda Walters and husband, Tim, Ellie Hooper; and one great-grandchild, Geni.
Funeral services will be conducted at Shiloh United Methodist Church, Stumpy Point on Sunday, October 22, 2006 at 2:00 p.m with Bobby Midgett and Rev. Sue Harris officiating. Burial will be in the Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:00 pm on Saturday, October 21, 2006 at Twiford’s Funeral Home. Seth B. Henderson

Seth Borden Henderson, 82, of Manteo, died Thursday, October 19, 2006 in Norfolk, VA. Mr. Henderson, born September 5, 1924, the son of William Daniel and Hattie Waters Henderson, was a retired Superintendent for Dare County Schools and also worked at Fort Raleigh with the National Park Service for several years. He was a graduate of East Carolina University and was a veteran, having served during WWII with the U.S. Navy. Mr. Henderson was a member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School for many years. He was an avid fisherman and gardener.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William A. ‘Bill’ Henderson.
Mr. Henderson is survived by his wife, Margaret Ipock Henderson of the residence; two sons, David B. Henderson of Manteo, Charles T. Henderson and wife, Dorothy of Manteo; a daughter, Kathryn H. May and husband, George of Chesapeake; two sisters, Marie H. Summers and Lucille H. Rogers, both of Wilmington; seven grandchildren, Thomas Henderson, Nathan May, Lydia May, Joanna May, Abigail May, Ruth May and Amy Holsinger; five nephews and two nieces.
A memorial service will be held at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church on Monday, October 23, 2006 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Jerry Cribb officiating. The family will receive friends at Twiford Funeral Home on Sunday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Mt. Mrs. Clara Mae Simons Powers, age 92, of 110 Hopkins Lane, Hertford, NC, died Friday, October 20, 2006 at the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Powers, a native of Camden County, was the daughter of the late William Riley Simons and Susan Frue Simons, and the widow of Mack Powers. She was a homemaker and had worked as a spinner at the Elizabeth City Cotton Mill, and was a Methodist.
Mrs. Powers is survived by a daughter, Hazel Ballance and husband Tilden of Newland, NC; a son, Raymond Powers of Fayetteville, NC; a special daughter in-law, Betty Powers of Hertford, NC; nine grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; ten great-great grandchildren; four step-great grandchildren; and seven step-great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Julius Powers.
A funeral service will be Sunday, October 22, 2006 at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Garry Mickey officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery.
