Elizabeth Hooper
Elizabeth Golften Hooper, 84, of Kitty Hawk, NC, passed away on December 29, 2005.
Mrs. Hooper was the widow of Tom A. Hooper. She is survived by two sisters; Edith Bradley and Delores Lewis; one brother, N.F. Jennette; three sons; Ronnie Tolson, Larry Tolson and Ricky Hooper; twelve grandchildren; Edwina Tolson, Georgina Nelson, Patricia Tolson Campion, Edgar Leon Tolson, Jr., Larry Hughes Tolson, Eric Tolson, Melissa Tolson, Shannon Binetta, Ryan Tolson, Kelly Tolson, Jessica Hooper, and Ian Hooper; nine great-grandchildren among other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by one son, Edgar Leon Tolson, Sr.
Before retiring to Kitty Hawk, NC, Elizabeth was a long-time resident of Virginia Beach, VA. There, she was a well-known slip-cover seamstress dedicated to her customers. She continued to use her talents in Kitty Hawk by serving charitably for Stumpy Point Shiloh United Methodist Church and Stumpy Point Volunteer Fire Department. Elizabeth will be best remembered as a loving and devoted mother and grandmother. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
A celebration of life will be held at Shiloh United Methodist Church on Monday, January 2, 2006 at 1:00 PM with Rev. Sue Harris officiating. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Funeral Home, Manteo, on Sunday, January 1, 2006 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

Virginia Beach ‘ Grace A. Bennett, 80, died Friday, December 30, 2005. Mrs. Bennett was born in Sanger, WV to the late Lee Andrew and Carlie Francis Janney Walker. She had been active in several local churches, and had retired from the Emily Greenshores Assisted Living Facility. Mrs. Bennett loved helping others and was a friend to all she knew. She was predeceased by her loving husbands Demphis Michael Ford and Robert Lee Bennett and son Robert Lee Ford.
Left to cherish her memory, are seven daughters, Lorene Mancuso of AK, Julia Alhouist of ID, Lynn Myers of IN, Mildred Ford of Norfolk, Diana Windham of Virginia Beach, Carolyn Hersey of West Point and Elizabeth Chadwell of OK; son Michael Ford of Chesapeake; sister, Anna Wilkerson of Virginia Beach; brother, Kenneth Walker of OH; thirty grandchildren, fifty-seven great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on 1:00 pm on Tuesday at Twiford’s Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake with Rev. Georgiana Bradden-Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Sidney Toler
Sidney Caleb Toler, 82, died Thursday, December 29, 2005 in Norfolk Sentara Hospital, following a long illness. Born in Corolla, NC, he was the son of the late William Roosevelt Toler, Sr. and Elizabeth Mae Crank. He was a member of Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church and was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Coast Guard. Following retirement from the U.S. Coast Guard he was a self-employed businessman. With his wife, Leola, he operated the Kitty Hawk Grocery and later co-founded Casper & Toler Construction Company.
Mr. Toler was the first fire chief for the Kitty Hawk, Southern Shores and Colington volunteer fire departments. He served on the first Kitty Hawk Town Council and was the town’s first building inspector. He served on the Dare County Board of Education and was past president of Austin Cemetery, Kitty Hawk.
Surviving, is his wife of 62 years, Leola Perry Toler of Kitty Hawk and six children; Tommy Toler and wife, Margaret Joy, of Wanchese, Sandra Midgett and husband, Ray, of Southern Shores, Blaine Toler and wife, Gail, of Manteo, Daphne Casper and husband, Raye, of Kitty Hawk; April Hardison and husband, Carl, of Plymouth, N.C., and Melanie Toler and Tim Narron of Kitty Hawk.
He is survived by eleven grandchildren; Les Toler and Ted Toler of Wanchese, Carrie Lee Booth of Durham, NC, Randy Midgett of Elizabeth City, NC, Phoebe Cooper and Shannon Fussell of Florida, Kristian (Buddy) Toler of Kitty Hawk, Joshua Casper and Jesse Casper of Kitty Hawk, Fred Melvin Wescott III of New Bern, NC, Jeffrey Wescott of Kitty Hawk and eight great-grandchildren. Mr. Toler was pre-deceased by a grandchild, Steven Midgett of Brooklyn, NY.
Also, surviving is a brother, William Roosevelt Toler, Jr. and his wife, Shirley, of Havelock, NC, a sister, Anges Toler Wise and husband, Wally, of Kitty Hawk.
Family visitation will be at the home of Ray and Sandra Midgett, 154 Duck Woods Drive, Southern Shores. Graveside services will be conducted at Austin Cemetery, Kitty Hawk, Sunday, January 1, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. with Kenneth Midgett, officiating. Twiford Funeral Home, Manteo, is in charge of arrangements.

Brian Keith Long, 41, of 104 Ivon Drive, Moyock, NC, died Thursday December 29, 2005, at the Albemarle Hospital.
Mr. Long was born October 13, 1964, in Baltimore, MD., and was the son of the late Carl Edward Long and Betty Jean Whitehurst Long.
He was employed with the Currituck County School System, as a school bus and fuel truck driver.
Survivors include his sister; Deborah Long Saul of Barco, NC., brothers Carl Edward Long, Jr. of Chesapeake, VA., and Christopher Michael Long of Elizabeth City, NC., his aunt and uncle Judy and Larry Tripp of Elizabeth City, nephew Michael Andrew Saul and niece Emily Elizabeth Kelley Saul both of Barco, NC., cousins Steve Tripp and David Tripp of Elizabeth City, NC and Susan Tripp of Windsor, NC.
A graveside funeral service will be held Monday, January 2, 2006,
at 1:30 P. M. at Laurel Memorial Gardens Cemetery at Poplar Branch, NC with Rev. Michael Smith officiating.

Native of Elizabeth City, NC
Mrs. Anne Sherlock Evans, 92 years of age, died Wednesday, December 28, 2005 at her home in Norfolk, VA. She was the wife of Capt. G. Russell Evans, USCG (Ret). She was born in Elizabeth City, NC, May 31, 1913. She was the oldest of four children to the late Ernest Linwood Sherlock and his wife Annie Johnson Sherlock. Anne grew up in Elizabeth City, NC and graduated from Weeksville High School in NC.
Anne did many things in her life; she knew the value of faith and giving back to the community. Anne was active in NC politics and was the Chairman of the NC Democratic Party in High Point, NC. She was a former member of the Methodist Church and later converted to Baptist. Anne was a nurse and worked at Memorial Hospital in High Point, NC. After coming to Norfolk Anne volunteered at DePaul Hospital for many years. Anne helped her husband, Captain Evans with his many speeches. He was always proud to introduce her as his wife; she was so good looking too. Anne was also an inspiration to him in his many writings.
Anne leaves behind her devoted husband Captain Evans; her daughters, Catherine McKinley and her husband Bill, and their sons, Brian McKinley and Martin McKinley, and her daughter, Miriam O’Neil and her son Melvin Owens and his daughter Debbie Hopson and her sons, Brian and Darren. Anne embraced her husband’s children, their children and grandchildren.
Anne’s husband Captain Evans is thankful to the staff of ‘Jewish Family Services’ Shirley, Linda and Alice for their devotions and loving care. Also recognized are her two private caretakers, Bessie and Rebecca.
Funeral services will be Saturday, December 31, 2005 at 11:00 AM at Talbot Park Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Gordon E. Paulson officiating. Burial will be at 3:00 PM in New Hollywood Cemetery in Elizabeth City, NC. Philip Joseph Beck, 41, of 313 Sandpiper Drive, Colington, NC, died Wednesday December 28, 2005 at the Outer Banks Hospital. He was born in Edenton, NC, the son of Joseph and Kay Burns Beck of Columbia, NC, and the husband of Debbie Hatcher Beck of the residence. He was the foreman for Atlantic Heating & Cooling, where he worked for 21 years. Mr. Beck loved his family, as well as being on the water and fishing, and will be missed by all.
Besides his parents and wife, Mr. Beck is survived by two daughters, LeAnn Overton of Moyock, NC, and Christy May Beck of Colington, NC; a son, Terry Lee Overton of Moyock, NC; a sister, Debbie Muffet and husband Mike of Jacksonville, NC; two grandsons, Christian Overton and Matthew Reynolds; and his mother and father-in-law, Wilma and Floyd Hatcher of South Hill, VA. Mr. Beck was preceded in death by a brother, John Beck.

Inez Morrisette Wright, age 76, of 215 Garrenton Road, Jarvisburg, NC, died December 28, 2005, in Sentara Nursing Home. She was born in Norfolk, VA, daughter of the late William and Inez Morrisette, and was raised and loved by Henry and Sally Garrenton. She was a loving and devoted wife of over 60 years of Sidney Wright, Sr., of the residence. She was a member of Jarvisburg Church of Christ.
Besides her husband she is survived by one daughter, Diane Hamilton and her husband Patrick of Kill Devil Hills, NC; one son, Sidney ‘Sid’ Wright, Jr. and his wife Kym also of Kill Devil Hills, NC; one sister Barbara Rogers of Maryland; four brothers, Calvin Morrisette and Angelo Penello both of Norfolk, VA, Ray Morrisette of Williamsburg, VA, and Anthony Penello of Chesapeake, VA; seven grandchildren, Steve and Bryan Wright, Mark Gibbs, January Bowles, Candie Holland, Jacklyn Spencer, and Sabrina Hamilton; eight great grandchildren; and a loving friend, Joan West.

Robert Cook
Duck, NC-Robert Milton Cook, 86, long-time resident of Northern Virginia and a marketing specialist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture
In Washington, DC, died December 26, of congestive heart failure.
After Cook retired from USDA, he and his wife, Dorathy Holmes Cook, moved to Duck in 1992.
A decorated Staff sergeant in the U.S. Army, Cook served in World War II receiving a Victory Ribbon and Good Conduct medal. He was with USDA 31 years directing cattle, sheep and bee marketing producting programs. He received his Bachelor of Science at Texas A&M in 1947.
Survivors include a granddaughter, Jenifer Tran, her husband Dave and two great-grandchildren, Brittanie and Brianna, all of Dumfries, VA. Also, a nephew Richard Holmes and his wife, Maria, of Georgia, and two nieces, Mary McAndrews of Carrollton, TX, and Linda Knappenberger of St. Paul, MN. His wife, Dorathy, preceded him in death in 2004.
A celebration of life will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., January 21, at the Cook home in Duck, NC.

Lola Gray
Lola Carolyn Knight Gray, 63, died Wednesday, December 28, 2005 at the Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City. Mrs. Gray was born in Brambleton, VA and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Shiloh United Methodist Church and the Shiloh United Methodist Women. Mrs. Gray was the daughter of the late Charles M. and Edna Wise Knight and the widow of William Lamar Gray.
She is survived by two daughters; Bonnie G. Cahoon and Barbara G. Harris, both of Stumpy Point; two sons, William L. Gray, Jr. and William Charles Knight, both of Stumpy Point; three sisters; Molly K. Santorno and Estelle K. Midgett, both of Manteo, and Ann Trevick of Meridian, MS; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held at the Shiloh United Methodist Church on Saturday, December 31, 2005 at 1:00 PM with Rev. Sue Harris and Rev. Tom Clarke officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo, on Friday, December 30, 2005 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM and other times at the residence. Isabella O’Neal Morris, 80, died Monday, December 26, 2005 at the Ocracoke Medical Center. She was born in Ocracoke and was a retired School Teacher for the public schools and was a member of the Ocracoke United Methodist Church. She was the daughter of the late William O’Neal and Eliza Scarborough O’Neal and was the widow of Lennis Morris.
She is survived by two nieces; Edith Russell of Harkers Island, and Lillian Brinkman of the Washington D.C. area; two nephews; Billy Willis of Harkers Island and John Wells of Ocracoke; one sister-in-law, Dora Johnson O’Neal of Harkers Island. She was preceded in death by two sisters; Margery Willis and Ludicie Wells; one brother, Ivey O’Neal and one nephew, Larry O’Neal.
A celebration of life will be held at the Ocracoke United Methodist Church on Friday, December 30, 2005 at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Joyce Reynolds officiating. Burial will take place in the Ocracoke Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Thursday, December 29, 2005 from 7:00 P.M. to 8:30 P.M.
