Katherine Hale Doyle “Kit-Kat” Johnston
KATHERINE HALE DOYLE ‘KIT KAT’ JOHNSTON, 90, of 150 Halls Harbor Road, Harbinger NC died Sunday April 29, 2007 in the Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Harbinger, NC daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin ‘B.F.’ Doyle Sr. and Frances Sawyer Doyle. She was the widow of Emmett Vernon Johnston. Mrs. Johnston was a member of the Powells Point Christian Church in Harbinger, NC, Former President of the Powells Point Extension Club where she had perfect attendance for many years. She was named Albemarle Outstanding Basketball player in 1935 and was an avid Redskins Fan. She was also the Former Co- Owner of Pots On N Kitchen and a professional Potato Peeler.
She is survived by three sisters, Patty Oxx of Elizabeth City, NC, Laura Speight and Joyce Hines both of Harbinger, NC, one brother Larry Doyle of Harbinger, NC, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Benjamin Franklin Doyle Jr., Sammy Carroll Doyle and William Herman ‘Billy’ Doyle.
Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon May 2, 2007 at 2:00 o’clock in the Powells Point Christian Church Cemetery in Harbinger, NC by David Coxson. The family will have a visitation Tuesday evening from 7:00 until 8:00 o’clock in the Powells Point Christian Church and other times will receive friends at the residence of her sister Joyce Hines 168 W. Cory Allen Voss
Newport News ‘ Ensign Cory Allen Voss, 30, died Monday April 30, 2007. He was a loving father, husband, brother, son, and friend to all who knew him.
Cory was born in Illinois and at 18, joined the Navy and moved to Hampton Roads. While serving in the Navy, Cory attended Tidewater Community College and graduated. He then pursued his bachelor degree with the ROTC unit at Old Dominion University in business administration, graduating with honors, August 2005, with an immediate commissioning officer rank. He was an officer in the Untied States Navy aboard the USS ELROD FFG-55, Norfolk. He loved his job and performed his duties with perfection. He will be greatly missed by the ELROD family.
Cory enjoyed life to the fullest. He loved his children and any free time was used to be with his family. He was a funny guy that could always seem to make you laugh at any moment. He loved basketball and watching his children’s soccer games.
Cory leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Catherina Voss, his daughter Casey Voss and his son Cory Voss Jr. of the home; his mother, Barbara Wilson and her husband M.D. Wilson; his brother, Dustin Voss, sister Kristen Smith & her husband Justin Smith and newborn nephew Lucus Smith, a step-daughter Kari Wiggins and a very special friend Ronnie Spicher.
He was always ‘The Goof Ball’ life of the party and will be deeply missed by all.

W. Murray Cudworth
Captain William Murray Cudworth, bom September 6, 1942, passed away on Friday, Aprrl 27, 2007. Born in Wanchese, NC, he was the son of John Moile Cudworth and Alma Etheridge Cudworth both deceased. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ellen Perry Cudworth. He is survived by his special love, Linda Lane Hodges and five children, Robin Cudworth Elliott, William Murray Cudworth, Jr. (BC), Christy Bell Cudworth, Carl Collins Cudworth and Crystal Rose Cudworth. He had three grandchildren, Jeffrey Landon Elliott, Jaidee Lynn Elliott, and Ezekiel Mathis Cudworth. He is also survived by his brother, John Moile Cudworth, Jr., sister, Ruth Marie Cudworth and his loving nieces, nephews and brother and sister in laws.
He was a special father figure to Angie Hooper and husband, Sean and Laura Beasley and husband, Hank. He was a loving “Pop” to Jeni Leigh Hooper, Rollins Cole Beasley, William Fisher Beasley and Keegan Bay Beasley.
Captain Murray was an avid fisherman since the young age of thirteen when he began working as a mate on charter boats. He progressed during his life as the captain of commercial vessels sailing from the north and south Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. His love for the sea and fishing defined him as a legend among the locals and the many situations he faced on the open water were inspiring adventures. At gatherings with family and friends, he was begged to play his guitar and sing country songs. Murray’s special voice and presence captivated his audiences, large and small, old and young. He gave all he had to give and never expected anything in return; he was just happy to help anyone in need. He loved to talk and was always entertaining with his stories. He was never selfish with his broad smile and handshake to all who knew him well and to those he had just met for the first time. Murray’s legacy would be that he was liked by all and loved by many.
The funeral service will be held at the Bethany Methodist Church in Wanchese on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 at 2:00 pm with a burial service afterwards at the Cudworth Cemetery in Wanchese. The family is receiving friends following the services at the Bethany Methodist Church fellowship hall.

Michael Roy ‘Mike’ Self, Sr., 52, of 799 NC Highway 158, Elizabeth City, NC died Saturday April 28, 2007 at his residence. He was born in Pasquotank County, NC, the son of Ruth Winslow Self of Elizabeth City, NC, and the late Edward F. Self, Jr. and was the husband of Frankie Payne Self of the residence. He was a member of Ramoth Gilead Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, New Lebanon Masonic Lodge #314 AF & AM, Elizabeth City York Rites Bodies, Sudan Temple, and Newland Providence Ruritan Club.
Besides his wife and mother, Mr. Self is survived by a daughter, Jennifer Nicole Self of Elizabeth City, NC; a son, Mike R. Self, Jr. of Elizabeth City, NC; two brothers, Terry W. Self and wife Marsha of Columbia, SC, and Jeffrey L. Self and wife LeAnne of South Mills, NC. He was preceded in death by a sister, Carolyn Self Harris and a brother, Timothy E. Self.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday, May 1, 2007 at 2:00 pm in Ramoth Gilead Baptist Church with the Rev. David Benton and Rev. Glenn Greenway officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. JOHNNY ELWOOD SANDERLIN
Portsmouth, VA
Johnny Elwood Sanderlin, 85, of 315 Saunders Drive, Portsmouth, VA, died Friday April 27, 2007 at the Norfolk Sentara General Hospital. Mr. Sanderlin was born in Currituck County, North Carolina and was the son of the late Johnny Wilson Sanderlin and Gertie Etheridge Sanderlin. He was a retired ship fitter with the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, and retired from the City of Chesapeake as a public works inspector. He was a member of the Jolliff United Methodist Church in Chesapeake, a fifty year member and past master of Hall Masonic Lodge # 53 A.F. & A.M. in Shawboro, NC, member of the Scottish Rite Bodies, Khedive Temple, Knights of Mecca of Khedive Temple and the Chesapeake Shrine Club. He was predeceased by his sister Mary S. Kight, brother Sam Willie Sanderlin, and a nephew John Henry Kight.
Survivors include his wife: Minnie Mae Cutrell Sanderlin of Portsmouth, VA; his nieces, Wanda S. Forbes and husband Joe of Camden, NC and Debra Williams and husband Bob of Currituck, NC; his nephews, William Kight and wife Rita and David Kight and wife Sherry both of Camden, NC, and Sam Sanderlin and wife Debbie of Currituck, NC; and several great nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Monday, April 30, at 2:00 PM at the Twiford Funeral Home, Northside Chapel, 1115 North Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC with Rev. Waverly Smith officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Cemetery with Masonic Rites rendered by Hall Masonic Lodge. Horace Robert McKinney, 83, of 130 North River Road, Powells Point, NC, died Friday, April 27, 2007 in Melbourne Beach, FL. Born in Engelhard, NC, he was the son of the late Robert Darrell and Iola Gibbs McKinney and was the widower of Sarah Torcivia McKinney. Mr. McKinney was a retired heavy duty equipment inspector at the Norfolk Naval Base and was a veteran having served in the U.S. Navy.
Mr. McKinney is survived by a daughter, Rebecca McKinney Lee of Melbourne Beach, FL; two sisters, Delma McKinney Smith of Chesapeake, VA and Shirley McKinney Decker of Norfolk, VA; a brother, Bobby Lee McKinney; and a granddaughter, Sierra Olivia Lee of Melbourne Beach, FL. Besides his wife and parents, Mr. McKinney was preceded in death by a sister, Polly McKinney Hatley.
A graveside service will be conducted on Thursday, May 3, 2007 at 1:00 PM at Rosewood Memorial Park, Virginia Beach, VA. The family will receive friends and relatives at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo on Wednesday from 7:00 to 9:00 PM.

Grady Simmons
Grady Simmons, 87, of Manteo, NC died Friday, April 27, 2007 at the Outer Banks Hospital. Mr. Simmons was born in Columbia, NC and was a produce salesman. He was a member of the Malachi Chapel Freewill Baptist Church and was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. He was the son of the late Leonus and Dora Basnight Simmons. He was also preceded in death by a son, Douglas Simmons and the mother of his children, Wilma Simmons.
Mr. Simmons is survived by four daughters, Norma Wagner of Currituck, NC, Rose Mohler of Afton, VA, Doris Moran and Donna Johns, both of Manteo, NC; five sons, Russell Gene Simmons of Florida, David Simmons of Manteo, NC, Ricky Simmons of Currituck, NC, Larry James Simmons and Morris Gene Simmons, both of Manteo; a sister, Maxine Godwin of Columbia, NC; a brother, Wilbert Simmons of Columbia, NC; twenty-one grandchildren and twenty-eight great-grandchildren and numerous great-great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held at Twiford Funeral Home, Manteo on Sunday, April 29, 2007 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Following the visitation the family will be at the home of Doris Moran, 110 Woodlands Drive, Manteo.

Mrs. Carrie Jean Mock Jenkins, age 83, of 121 Hastings Drive, Moyock, NC, died Wednesday, April 25, 2007 at the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Jenkins, a native of Savannah, GA, was the daughter of the late Frank E. Mock and Mary Ann Crews Mock and the wife of Herbert Aaron Jenkins of the residence.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, Randall B. Jenkins, Sr., and wife Patricia of Gates, NC, and Charles C. Jenkins of Moyock, NC; a sister, Hilda Boykin of Jacksonville, FL; seven grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by two sisters and four brothers.
