Nell Markham Parker

Nell Markham Parker, 98, of 117 Rosedale Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, May 30, 2007 at her residence. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC, the daughter of the late Edward Markham, Jr. and Julia Brinson Markham and was the widow Claud D. Parker. She was a member of Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Joy Club, Elizabeth City/Pasquotank County Senior Center, and the Matoaca Council #10 Degree of the Pocahontas.

Mrs. Parker is survived by a daughter, Bess P. Mudra of Elizabeth City, NC; two granddaughters, Marian McNair and husband Morris of Panama City, FL, and Catherine Mudra of Elizabeth City, NC; a grandson, John Mudra and wife Cindy of Hertford, NC; four great grandchildren, Mack McNair and wife Heather of Atlanta, GA, Mike McNair and wife Becky of Tampa, FL, Teresa Wooten and husband Donnie, and Karen Twiford and husband J.J. all of Elizabeth City, NC; nine great-great grandchildren, Ryan McQuinn, Conor McNair, Brendan McNair, John McNair, Jessica McNair, Ethan Wooten, Cameron Wooten, Callie Twiford, and John Twiford; five sisters, Addie Maston of Virginia Beach, VA, Dorothy Oldaker and Sakie Ferris both of Norfolk, VA, Marie Jackson of Suffolk, VA, and Martha Kittrell of Portsmouth, VA; and a brother, Thomas Markham of Seattle, WA. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, John J. Mudra, Sr..

A graveside service will be held Saturday, June 2, 2007 at 11:00 am in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Clark and Rev. Glenn Greenway officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends at the funeral home, Friday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 and at other times at the residence. Donis L. White

Manteo, NC

On May 30, 2007 Donis Lewis White of Manteo, NC died at the age of 89. Donis was born in Terril, Iowa and moved to the Outer Banks around the age of 10 with her parents, Ray and Inger Lewis. In 1934 she was married to W. Frank White (deceased) and is survived by her son, Frank White, Jr., as well as several nephews. She is also preceded in death by her three siblings.

In 1942 she began work with Sheriff Victor Meekins as the only Deputy for the County of Dare and continued in the same position under Sheriff Frank Cahoon, retiring after thirty-two years of service. For many years she was the Treasurer of the Dare County Library Board and was also the accountant for the Dare County 4-H Camps. With her husband and his family she was a pioneer in the tourist industry on the shores of the Atlantic where they owned and operated early motels.

There will be no scheduled visitation, but a simple and informal service of thanksgiving will be held at Twiford Funeral Home, Manteo on Saturday, June 2, 2007 at 5:00 pm. The family requests no flowers and invites friends to join them after the service or at other times at 107 Woodsland Drive, just off of Gardens Drive in Manteo. Private burial will be in Roanoke Island Memorial Gardens.

Helen Irene Stenstrom Nevins

Helen Irene Stenstrom Nevins, 92, of 910 West Colonial Avenue, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, May 26, 2007, at the W. R. Winslow Memorial Home. She was born in Polk County, Des Monies, Iowa, and was the daughter of the late Emal Stenstrom and Hulda Peterson Stenstrom. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Des Monies, Iowa, and was an avid bridge player.

Mrs. Nevins is survived by her husband, Martin Farrell Nevins, her daughter; Christine N. Falco and her husband Neil of New Canaan, Connecticut, and her grandson Christopher Falco.

A private graveside memorial service will be held Saturday June 2, at 10:00
A. M. at the New Hollywood Cemetery with Rev. Mason Smith officiating.

Thelma A. Peele

Wanchese, NC

Thelma Austin Peele, 84, of Wanchese, NC died Tuesday, May 29, 2007 in a Nags Head nursing home. Mrs. Peele, born in Hatteras, NC was a homemaker and a member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Manteo. She was the daughter of the late Robert L. and Pearlie Austin.

She is survived by her husband, William Lauris Peele of the residence; and a sister, Cynthia Etheridge of Wanchese, NC.

Funeral services will be held at Twiford Colony Chapel, Manteo on Thursday, May 31, 2007 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Roger Barnett and Rev. Ron Denham officiating. Burial will be in the Cudworth Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of Cynthia Etheridge, 67 Jovers Lane, Wanchese.

Donald Lee Umphlett

Kill Devil Hills, NC

Donald Lee Umphlett, 51, of Kill Devil Hills, NC died Tuesday, May 29, 2007 at his residence. Mr. Umphlett was born in Elizabeth City, NC and was owner and operator of Don’s Pest Control. He was the son of the late Eddie and Sarah Stevenson Umphlett.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Johnson Umphlett of the residence; two children, Christy Umplett and Thomas Umphlett, both of Pennsylvania; a brother, Gary Umphlett of Jackson, MD.

A memorial service will be held at St. Andrews By-The-Sea Episcopal Church on Friday, June 1, 2007 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Charles E.B. Gill officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Dare County SPCA, POB 1000, Manteo, NC 27954, or Albemarle Hospice, POB 189, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Gilbert Louzao

On Memorial Day, May 28, 2007, Gilbert Louzao 87, a long time resident of Elizabeth City, passed away peacefully with many family members present, as a result of heart failure, at Albemarle Hospital.

Gilbert Louzao was a licensed Master Electrician and the Chief Electrician for the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City before his retirement in 1981. He was a member of the Mason’s George Washington Lodge in New York City for over 40 years.

He was also a decorated World War II Navy veteran, having taken part in five Pacific island invasions. He was both a coxswain of US Marine landing crafts, as well as an Electrician’s Mate. He was awarded four Bronze Stars, as well as the Victory Medal.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Sylvia; seven children, Tony, Jill, Gail, Gilbert, Sylvia, Millie and Willie; twelve grand children; and six great grand children.

As a master level chess player, he was often seen downtown by the Elizabeth City dock playing chess with crews from incoming boats, as well as any bystander willing to challenge him and suffer a quick and humiliating defeat.

His remains will be handled by Twiford’s Funeral Home, and his ashes dispersed at Sea with a small private memorial, as per his wishes.
