Josephine Morgan Cartwright

Josephine Morgan Cartwright, 91, famous for her 16 layer chocolate cakes, died Friday, June 29, 2007, in a Charlottesville, VA hospital from complications of pneumonia. She had been a resident of 3297 Main Street Extended for most of her life and had spent the last year and a half at the Orange County Home for Adults in Orange, VA. She was the daughter of the late Thomas Seth Morgan and Mary Eliza Ownley Morgan and the widow of William Bernard Cartwright.

She was the mother of six children and survived by four: William Robert ‘Bob’ Cartwright of Palmyra, VA, Randy Morgan Cartwright, of Nags Head, NC, Donna C. Hayden of Orange, VA, and Robin C. Sanders of Aromas, CA. She is survived by ten grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren. Josephine is also survived by a twin sister, Pauline M. Meads and a brother, Irvin Thomas Morgan, both of Elizabeth City, NC. She was predeceased by her eldest child, Frances C. Jones; an infant child, Jo Anne Cartwright; a grandchild, and her brothers and sisters, George Harvey Morgan, Julian Cecil Morgan, Nathan Leroy Morgan, Mary Elizabeth M. Tadlock, and Callie Mae Morgan.

A funeral service will be held in Berea Baptist Church on Monday, July 2, 2007 at 2:00 PM with the Rev. Glenn Greenway officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the funeral home and following the service in the church fellowship hall. Agnes Griffin Dozier

Agnes Griffin Dozier, 84, of 7245 Caratoke Highway, Jarvisburg, NC., died Thursday June 28, 2007, at her residence. Mrs. Dozier was born in
North Hampton County, N. C. and was the daughter of the late Julian Picot Griffin and Kate Newsome Griffin. Her husband Lawrence L. Dozier, Jr preceded her in death. She was a homemaker and former schoolteacher having graduated from East Carolina Teachers College. Mrs. Dozier was a member of the Poplar Branch Baptist Church the Joy Sunday School Class, and was a founding member of the Jarvisburg Home Demonstration Club and a volunteer with the America Red Cross.

Survivors include her daughters; Fey D. Mikles and husband Mike of Clearwater, Florida; Katie D. Hill of Jarvisburg, N. C. and Donna Beth Kenny and her husband Jim of Kitty Hawk, N. C., her son; Charles Dozier and his wife Marlee of Jarvisburg, N. C. sister, Janie Sutton of Rocky Mount, N. C., eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held Saturday June 30th, at 2:00 P. M. at the Poplar Branch Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Thorn and Rev. Renee Edwards officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery, Elizabeth, N. C. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall and other times the residence. Following the visitation at the church the immediate family will go in procession to West Lawn Cemetery for the interment.

Michael Francis Wheeler

Michael Francis Wheeler, 77, 1111 Apt. E, Main Street Ext., Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday, June 28, 2007 at Sentara Nursing Center-Currituck. He was born in Baltimore, MD, the son of the late Michael O. Wheeler and Lillian Muller Wheeler and was the widower of Mae Wright Wheeler. He was a retired C.P.O. machinist for U.S. Navy, a veteran of the Korean War, and was the owner/operator of Wheeler Electric.

Mr. Wheeler is survived by two sons, John W. Wheeler, Sr. and wife Teresa of Sligo, NC, and William E. Richardson of San Bernardino, CA; a daughter, Harriet Sloat of Weisterstown, MD; a sister, Eilene Albany of Essex, MD; ten grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. Besides his wife and parents, Mr. Wheeler was preceded in death by four sisters.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 2:00 pm in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Aaron Pendley officiating. Burial will be in the Wright Family Cemetery. Robert Edridge King

Mr. Robert Edridge King, 83, of 116 Robert Street, Camden, NC, died Tuesday, June 26, 2007, at Albemarle Hospital. Mr. King was the son of the late Arlie and Ruth Edridge King and was the husband of Ann McDougall King. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U. S. Army, he received the Purple Heart, and was member of William Clarence Jackson VFW Post # 6060.

Survivors include his wife; Ann McDougall King, two daughters, Kathryn Hartmann of New York and Lisa Ann King of Maine; two sons, Mitchell King of Florida and Eric A. King of Maine, one step-son, Fred Stanley of Elizabeth City, N. C., five grandchildren and one great granddaughter. He was predeceased by a son, Thomas King.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, June 28, at 5:00 P. M. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Aaron Pendley officiating. The family will receive friends following the memorial service in the funeral home lobby.

Sadron C. Lampert, III, 64, died Saturday, June 23, 2007 at his residence. Born in New York City, NY, he was the son of the late Sadron C. Lampert, Jr. and the late Edith Rawls. Mr. Lampert was a salesman for a building supply company and was a former member of the Kitty Hawk Volunteer Fire Department.

Mr. Lampert is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth D. Lampert of Gloucester Point, VA; a son, Sadron C. Lampert, IV of Williamsburg, VA; a grandson, Sadron C. Lampert, V of Williamsburg, VA; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted on Friday, June 29, 2007 at 1:00 PM at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk, VA.

Wilton Carroll “Preacher” Wescott

WILTON CARROLL WESCOTT, better known as ‘Preacher’, born July 19, 1932, went home to be with Jesus on June 24th. He died as he lived, surrounded by his adoring family. He loved to tell people he was born in ‘My Shoes’ (Mashoes Creek), North Carolina, to Susie and Colon Wescott. He was preceded in death by siblings, Mickey, Irene and Iva. Wayne Wescott of Manteo is his only surviving sibling. ‘Preacher’ had to row his siblings to school while they lived in Mashoes. His high school years were spent in Manteo.

At 21 he married the love of his life, Maria Rivas Wescott; for better or for worse, in sickness and in health, they were together 53 years. Those years produced 5 children: Wilton Wescott, Jr, Cindy Wescott Peterson, Anthony Wescott, Tina Wescott Wilson and Christopher ‘Kipper’ Wescott. Preacher was proud of his children and they loved him fiercely. He leaves behind a legacy of fifteen grandchildren and one great grandchild. He will be greatly missed.

The funeral service will be held at the home located at 160 Airport Road, Manteo, NC on Saturday, June 30, at 10:30 AM. If there is inclement weather the service will be at Twiford Funeral Home in Manteo, NC. The family will receive friends at Twiford Funeral Home on Friday, June 29, between 6pm and 8 pm.

Linda Morgan Burgess

Linda Morgan Burgess, 54, of 312 Locust Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Sunday, June 24, 2007 at her residence. She was born in Onslow County, NC, the daughter of Iris Baines Morgan Belvins and the late Joseph Patrick Morgan, Jr., and was the wife of John Wesley Burgess, Jr. of the residence. She was a public school teacher, a committee chair for the Relay for Life, and a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she was very active in the church and held many positions.

Besides her mother and husband, Mrs. Burgess is survived by three daughters, Heather Hewitt and husband Ira of Elizabeth City, NC, Amy Twiddy and husband Tony of Camden, NC, and Laura Wells and husband Bobby of Elizabeth City, NC; a son, Johnny Burgess of Virginia Beach, VA; four sisters, Michele Umphlett, Donna Graziosi, Angela Graziosi, and Tina Dillard; two brothers, Joseph P. Morgan, III, and Dennis Graziosi; two grandchildren, Brittany Twiddy and Barret Hewitt; special friends, Elizabeth Mendonca and Gene Talley; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her father, Mrs. Burgess was preceded in death by two brothers, Andrew Morgan and Tony Graziosi.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 27, 2007 at 11:00 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A private burial for immediate family will take place at West Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the church service in the Cultural Hall, Tuesday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 at the funeral home, and at other times at the residence. Roy W. Wescott, Sr.

Roy Wilton Wescott, Sr., 93, died Saturday, June 23, 2007 at his residence. Born on November 16, 1913, he was the son of the late Lloyd M. and Lonie Midgett Wescott. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy ‘Dot’ Wescott, a daughter, Louise ‘Bubbles’ Daniels, and a brother, Edward M. ‘Ab’ Wescott.

Mr. Wescott is survived by two children, Roy W. Wescott, Jr. and Dorothy Dale Wescott both of Manteo, NC; a brother, Fred M. Wescott of Manteo, NC; a son-in-law, Bill Daniels of Manteo, NC; a former wife, Marie Ratchford of Manteo, NC; ten grandchildren, Karen Dane of Manteo, NC, Ken Daniels of Manteo, NC, Karla Farquarson of Gastonia, NC, Kimberly Hunt of Greensboro, NC, Amy, April Pakula of Kill Devil Hills, NC, Timothy Floyd of Whitwell, TN, Julie Haataja of Richland, MO, Angela Saunders of Hephzibah, GA, and Victor Wescott of Hawaii; and twenty great grandchildren.

Roy Wescott, with his brothers Edward ‘Ab’ and Fred Wescott founded Manteo Furniture Company in 1946. He remained active there until his death. He built the Cavalier Motel located in Kill Devil Hills during 1949 and opened the doors in 1950. He was a life member of the Manteo Lodge #521 AF & AM with over fifty years of membership and was a life member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church.

A funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday, June 26, 2007 at 1:00 PM at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jerry Cribb and the Rev. Ken Simpson. Burial will be in Manteo Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives at Twiford’s Colony Chapel on Monday from 7:00 to 9:00 PM.

Miriam Keaton Simmons, 64, of 1833 Nixonton Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday June 23, 2007, at her residence. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC, and was the daughter of the late John Henry Keaton and Alma Overman Keaton. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was a retired schoolteacher having taught at Coopers Elementary in Nash County, Griggs Elementary in Currituck County and the Albemarle Academy.

Survivors include her sons Steven W. Simmons and wife Angie of Chesapeake, VA., Patrick Keaton Simmons and wife Kristin, and Nicholas Frederick Simmons and wife Abbey of Elizabeth City, NC; her daughter, Bethany Simmons Wyatt and husband Randy of LaVerkin, Utah, her brothers, John Austin Keaton and wife Lillian of Elizabeth City, NC, and Ralph Michael ‘Bud’ Keaton and wife Linda of Garner, NC; ten grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews, and her aunt Kathleen Overman Meads of Elizabeth City, N. C. The family wishes to express their appreciation for the assistance and help provided by Elizabeth Meads during her final days.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, June 26, at 11:00 A. M. at the Elizabeth City Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with Bishop Frank Weeks officiating.
