Earl Wayne Hussey, 75, of 267 Bingham Road, South Mills, NC, died Sunday, July 29, 2007 at Chesapeake General Hospital. He was born in Randleman, NC, son of the late Oscar Lloyd and Rose Redding Hussey and was the widower of Beatrice Mae Midgette Hussey. He was a retired electronic technician for civil service, and was a veteran of United States Coast Guard.

Mr. Hussey is survived by a daughter, Brenda H. Long and Tommy Scolaro of South Mills, NC; a son, Earl Wayne Hussey, Jr. and wife Donna of Newport News, VA; three grandchildren, Jeremy Hussey, Jason Long, and Christina Hussey; a great grandson, Connor Hussey; and two sisters, Myra H. Shelton and Ione H. Woodlief. Besides his wife and parents, Mr. Hussey is preceded in death by a sister, Lois Garner.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, August 1, 2007 at 2:00 pm in Twiford’s Northside Chapel with Rev. Roland Cooper officiating. David William Burley, 56, of Ocracoke, NC died Sunday, July 29, 2007 in Ocracoke. Mr. Burley was born in New York City, NY and was a commercial fisherman. He attended Our Lady of the Seas Catholic Church. He was the son of the late Arthur Burley and the late Barbara Grussing Cobb, and the husband of Arleen Bedrossian Burley of the residence.

Besides his wife, Mr. Burley is survived by two daughters, Barbara Frances Burley and Louise Ann Burley, both of Ocracoke.

John Walden “Wally” Hancock

John Walden Hancock, 84, of Manteo, NC died at 6:00 am on Friday, July 27, 2007 at Britthaven Outer Banks. Mr. Hancock was born September 13, 1922 in Okmulgee, OK, the son of Walden Wood Hancock and Alice Allred Hancock. Wally, as he was called, was a printer by trade and retired from the Government Printing Office as a proof reader and cost analyst. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints until failing health prevented regular attendance. He was a veteran, having served in WWII in the U.S. Army Air Corp.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Vera Jensen Hancock.
Besides his wife, Mr. Hancock is preceded in death by his son, J. Wally Hancock, twin sons, Frank and David Hancock and one grandson, Eli Jeremiah Hancock.

He is survived by three children, Tamalie Hancock of Fort Smith, AR, Robert B. Hancock of Manteo, NC, and Barry W. Hancock of Grabill, IN; four grandchildren, Shauna Barker, Mandy Bartell, Jessie Hancock and Lacey Hancock; and six great-grandchildren, Christian, Caleb and Kate Barker, Isabella Bartell, Brayden Eilert, and John Jeremiah Hancock.

Viewing for family and friends will be at Twiford Funeral Home, Manteo, NC on Thursday, August 2, 2007 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. A graveside service will be held at the Midgett Cemetery, Manteo, on Friday, August 3, 2007 at 10:00 am.

Ellis William Bright

Ellis William Bright, 66, of 1619 Rochelle Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday, July 27, 2007 at his residence.

Mr. Bright was born April 25, 1941 in Pasquotank County, Elizabeth City, NC, and was the son of the late George William Bright, Jr. and Alcora Dixon Bright.

He was a retired salesperson with Goodyear and Firestone. Mr. Bright was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He is survived by his life partner, Teresa Bennett of Elizabeth City, NC; one daughter, Pennie E. Just of St. Louis, MO; three sons, Ellis W. ‘Mike’ Bright, Jr., of LaGrange, NC, Charles W. Bright and David N. Bright both of St. Louis, MO; a sister, Betty B. Chesson of Elizabeth City, NC; a brother, George W. Bright III of Elizabeth City, NC; and five grandchildren.

The body will be cremated and the family will be holding a private memorial service for Mr. Bright at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Albemarle Hospice, P.O. Lawrence Hayes Craighead, 76, of Wanchese, NC died Friday, July 27, 2007 at his residence. Mr. Craighead , born in Covington, VA ,was retired from the National Park Service, was a carpenter and was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Marine Corp. He was the son of the late Charles Leonard and Bernice Louise Lawrence Craighead.

Mr. Craighead is survived by his wife, Barbara Ann Hazen Craighead of the residence; three daughters, Bernice Louise Armstrong and husband, Dick of Elizabeth City, NC, Connie Leary and husband, Keith of Chesapeake, VA and Laura Kee and husband, Kenneth of Wanchese, NC; two sons, Lawrence Craighead, Jr. and Charles Craighead and wife, Cindy all of Wanchese; one sister, Betty C. Gilbert of Maryland; four grandchildren, Bryant Runkles, Lauren Ball, James Ball and Lindsey Kee; and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held in the Cudworth Cemetery, Wanchese, on Monday, July 30, 2007 at 10:00 am. The family will receive friends at Twiford Funeral Home on Sunday from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Stella Skinner Williams

Stella Skinner Williams, 94, of Dozier Road, Moyock, N. C., died Wednesday July 25th, 2007, at Winslow Memorial Home. Mrs. Williams was born in Perquimans County, N. C. and was the daughter of the late William Skinner and Sallie White. She was preceded in death by her husband Thomas Milton Williams, her daughter Sally Outlaw, four sisters and four brothers.

Surviving are her sons, William ‘Bill’ Williams and his wife Sabra, Gilbert Williams and his wife Jean both of Elizabeth City, N. C. and Donald ‘Don’ Williams of Currituck, N. C., her daughter Clara Faye Hepner of Jacksonville, Fl., her thirteen grandchildren J. C. Outlaw, Trudy Outlaw, Melissa Rowland, Debra Justice, Kimber Taylor, Willy Hepner, Liza Klosterman, Bridgett Anderson, Bruce Allen Hepner, Skip Williams, Carlette Maher, Jeannie Hazdra and Dawn Williams, sixteen great grandchildren and thirteen great-great grandchildren, her sisters Laura Evans of Edenton, N. C. and Nell Turner of Virginia Beach, VA.

A graveside funeral service will be held Sunday July 29th, at 2:00 P. M. at the Moyock Cemetery, with Rev. Vic Ramsey officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday evening July 28th from 6:00 P. M. to 8:00 P. M. at Twiford Funeral Home and other times at the home of her son Bill Williams, 619 Pitts Chapel Road.

Leroy Clifford Smith

Mr. Leroy Clifford Smith, age 81, of 221 Whitehat Road, Hertford, NC, died Tuesday, July 24, 2007 at the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Smith, a native of Redding, MA, was the son of the late Kent Smith and Maude Smith, and the husband of Sylvia Lillian Dawe Smith of the residence. He was a retired Power Plant Operator of Norshipco and a Christian.

Besides his wife he is survived by three daughters, Sheila Albury and husband Richard of Hertford, NC, Christine Hall and husband Jacob and Sally White and husband Buddy all of Elizabeth City, NC; a son, Kenneth Smith of Hertford, NC; nine grand children; and seventeen great grandchildren.

Carolyn McLawhorn Brickhouse

Carolyn McLawhorn Brickhouse, 54, of 311 Charles Street, Elizabeth City, N. C., departed her life to be with our heavenly father on July 23, 2007, at the Albemarle Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. She was born October 8th, 1952 in Pasquotank County, North Carolina and was the daughter of the late Marvin McLawhorn and Doris Cox McLawhorn. She was preceded in death by one brother Ray McLawhorn. She was affiliated with the Emmanuel Baptist Church.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 37 years Romie Brickhouse, Jr., and her baby girl Kayla of the residence. She is also survived by her son William ‘Pedro’ Brickhouse of Elizabeth City, her daughters Lisa Pulley and her husband Stephen of Hertford, N. C., Kimberly Brickhouse and friend Jason Virt of Hudson, Florida and Rhonda B. Runkles and her husband Bryant of Elizabeth City, her seven grandchildren that are very dear to her heart, Kayla White, William Pulley, Bryant Runkles, Jr., Noah Runkles, Justin Virt and Matthew Pulley and Channin Runkles, her brother Jimmy McLawhorn of Edenton, N. C., Benny McLawhorn of Hertford,
N. C, Donald and Robert McLawhorn and David McLawhorn all of Elizabeth City, N. C., her sisters Ellen McNeal of Kinston, N. C., Linda McLawhorn and Judy Pierce both of Elizabeth City, N. C., and her devoted friend Carolyn White.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday July 25th, at 7:00 P. M. at the Emmanuel Baptist Church, 109 Chadburn Avenue, Elizabeth City with Pastor Kevin Senn officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall and other time at her residence.

Patricia Preiser

Patricia Agnes Murphy Preiser, 75, of Kill Devil Hills, NC died Tuesday, July 24, 2007 at her residence. She was born in 1931 in New York City to Francis and Agnes Murphy, raised in Hawthorne, NY and retired to Nags Head in 1974. Pat was married for 55 years to her beloved Gene whom she companied thru the Navy, the NY Fire Dept., and retirement.

Pat has five daughters, Kathleen, Carolee, Joanne, Donna and Barbara; eleven grandchildren, Sabrina, Bobbie Jo, Brian, Regina, Brian, Brandon, Trisha, Ryan, Adam, Robin, and Cheyanne; three great-granddaughters, Natalie, Abby and Tori; and two brothers, John Michael Murphy and Brian Murphy, both of Florida. She was predeceased by her parents and a son, Francis Preiser.

Pat graduated; St. Thomas Elem., Pleasantville, NY, St. Mary’s High School, Katonah, NY and New York Business School in Rockefeller Center, Manhattan.
Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Hawthorne, NY, was her home parish until 1974 when she joined Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Kitty Hawk, where she sat on the parish council, served as a lecturer, a Eucharistic minister, The Altar Guild, Our Lady of the Sea Women’s Club, the crafty ladies, and several ecumenical boards. She was a major component in the formation of a mission in Creswell for the Catholic migrant workers that was recently dedicated, and has long lobbied in support of their dignity and rights.

Her NY business career included, the NY State Police, Hawthorne Barracks, as a Kelly Girl with full government clearance, she was employed by IBM, Ipcot, Lockeed, Singer-Keerfoot, Mobil Oil, and several other area corporations. Her volunteer work included, the Catholic Church, Rosary Hill Home, and serving as a local and district Girl Scout leader.

In the 1980′s she licensed as an EMT, Advance Life Support, Med flight, served as an officer, and flew with the Air National Guard during the 400th Anniversary with Dare County’s volunteer squad. From 1979-1992, Pat served as the NCDMV Agent assigned to Manteo Office, appointed by Sen. Marc Basnight. The ‘Team In Training’ has raised huge amounts of money for leukemia research with Pat as their ‘Honored Teammate’ and their friend. After many years at A Restaurant By George, and having assisted George Crocker with titling work for A Rearview Mirror, Pat moved to Kelly’s Restaurant with her dear friend and colleague, Mike Kelly. Here ‘Ms Pat’s’ smiling face and ladylike mannerisms greeted all whom crossed the lobby and worked within, right up until this spring. Pat’s time on this Earth was quite well spent, her deeds and life leave many fond memories and lessons.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at Holy Redeemer by the Sea Catholic Church, Kitty Hawk on Friday, July 27, 2007 at 10:00 am with Rev. Dr. William F. Walsh, osfs officiating. There will also be a Celebration of Life at the First Flight Church, Nags Head at 1:00 pm with Assoicate Pastor Azariah Jeyakumar officiating. There will be a reception for family and friends immediatley following the service at First Flight Church. The family will receive friends at Twiford Funeral Home, Manteo on Thursday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the charity on one’s choice.

James Wallace Knapp

James Wallace Knapp, age 87, of 113 Kingsway, Moyock, NC, died Friday, July 20, 207 at Sentara Barco Nursing Center. Mr. Knapp, a native of Jersey City, NJ, was the son of the late Wallace Leroy Knapp and June Wagner Knapp and the widower of Gertrude Wolfe Knapp. He was the owner and operator of J. W. Knapp Company and a US Marine Veteran of WWII.

Mr. Knapp is survived by a daughter, Nancy Anne Evans and husband John; two sons, James Richard Knapp and Brian Jeffrey Knapp and wife Tana; two grandchildren, Nicole Knapp and David Knapp and a great granddaughter, Summer Condlin.
