Beloved Mother and Sister

Janice Louise Tarkington Jones, 64, of 806 Tuscarora Ave., Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday, September 28, 2007 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Elizabeth City, NC, the daughter of the late Millard Elmer Tarkington, Sr. and Evie Rae Simpson Tarkington.

Mrs. Jones is survived by three sons, Walter B. Jones, III, William C. Jones, James D. Jones and wife Leah all of Elizabeth City, NC; two sisters, Christine Stokely of King William, VA, and Kay Trueblood of Elizabeth City, NC; and a brother, Clifford Tarkington and wife Julia of New Bern, NC. She was preceded in death by three sisters, and five brothers.

A graveside service will be held Monday, October 1, at 11:00 A. M. in New Hollywood Cemetery with Pastor Max Edwards officiating. Twila Jane McGill Ellis

Twila Jane McGill Ellis, 80, of Arlington, VA, died Wednesday, September 26, 2007 at Cherrydale Health and Rehabilitation Center. Mrs. Ellis, a native of Canton, Ohio, was the daughter of the late Clarence E. McGill and Alverna Mary Mathias McGill. She was married to Carl Richard Ellis from 1946 to 1961. After graduation from Lehman High School in 1945 in Canton she attended a business college in Kansas City, MO. She worked with United Airlines, then known as Capital Airlines, the American Society of Naval Engineers and retired in 1985 from the Department of Interior US Geological Survey having worked in the Geological Inquiries Division and then the Topographical Map Division. She lived in Elizabeth City, NC for twenty years where she was a member of Cann Memorial Presbyterian Church. She was an avid swimmer.

Mrs. Ellis is survived by a daughter, Jan Marie Ellis Reams of Lorton, VA; and two grandchildren, Chad Michael Reams and Cheryl Renee Reams.

A memorial service will be during the 11:00 AM Worship Service at Cann Memorial Presbyterian Church on Sunday, October 14, 2007 with Rev. Leigh Gillis officiating. Michael P. Parziale

Chesapeake ‘ Michael P. Parziale ‘Mike’, 63, passed away peacefully September 27, 2007 at the hospital. He was born in Brooklyn, NY. Mr. Parziale was a teacher for 33 years and past Marshal at Bow Creek Golf Course for eight years.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife, Beuna, of 36 years; his daughters Stephanie Cooker and her husband Michael and Melissa Shandor and her husband Victor; his parents ‘Sabino’ John Parziale and Joanne Tinello; his sister, Judith P. Gmyr, of Kirkville, NY; his brother John Parziale of San Jose, CA; his five grandchildren, AnnMarie, Julia and Angelina Cooker and Lena and VJ Shandor; and many nieces and nephews.

Charles Lee Wilson, 57, of Manteo, NC died Wednesday, September 26, 2007 at his residence. Mr. Wilson, born in Currituck County and was a commercial fisherman. He was a lifelong resident of Dare County and a member of Roanoke Acres Church of Christ. He was the son of the late Willis L. and Gladys Berry Wilson and was also preceded in death by a brother, Billy Wilson.

Mr. Wilson is survived by his wife, Susan Hall Wilson of the residence; a son, Charles L. ‘Chuck’ Wilson, Jr. of Manteo, NC; fours sisters, Betty Groce of Manteo, NC, Ginger Reber of Wanchese, NC, Nancy Powell of Manteo, NC and Lisa Moseley of Waverly, VA; three brothers, Joe Wilson of Wanchese, NC, Dave Wilson of Port St. Lucie, FL and Mikey Wilson of Manteo, NC.

A graveside service will be held at Roanoke Island Memorial Gardens, Manteo on Saturday, September 29, 2007 at 11:00 am with Rev. Ronnie Midgett officiating. The family will receive friends at Twiford Funeral Home on Friday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 pm and at other times at the residence.

Marjorie Ann Piers, 64, of Rodanthe, NC died Wednesday, September 26, 2007 at her residence. Mrs. Piers was born in Boston, MA, the daughter of the late John J. and Mary Helen Walsh Lyons.

Mrs. Piers is survived by a daughter, Ann Piers of Spring Lake, NC; four sons, John Robert Piers of Hope Mills, NC, Robert John Piers of Hope Mills, NC, Joseph Christopher Piers of Conway, NH, and Anthony Patrick Piers of Spring Lake, NC; four daughters-in-law, Vanessa Piers, Jennifer Piers, Gina Piers and Gale Rushinski; three sisters, Mary Ellen Rose of Salvo, NC, Kathleen Rose of Rodanthe, NC and Theresa Humphries of Littleton, NC; and nine grandchildren, Robert John Piers, Jr., Tyler Thomas Piers, Brenden Wayne Piers, Ashley Mae Piers, Alexis Nicolette Tillman, Shane Gerard Piers, Bennie Tillman IV, Angelina Vanessa Piers, and Baby A.J. Piers.

A graveside service will be conducted on Saturday, September 29, 2007 at 2:00 PM at Laurel Memorial Gardens in Poplar Branch, NC by Deacon Don Wobser. The family will receive friends and relatives at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo on Saturday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

Beulah Bateman James

Beulah Bateman James, 91, of Bart James Road, Elizabeth City, N. C. died Wednesday, September 26th, 2007 at Winslow Memorial Home. Mrs. James was born in Pasquotank County, N. C., and was the daughter of the late Leondious Burfoot Bateman and Margaret Corbett Bateman. She was the widow of Bartlett Fearing James. She was a member of Salem Baptist Church and former owner and operator of James Grocery.

Survivors include her daughter, Frances Dean Seymour of Elizabeth City,
N. C. her son, Bartlett Leondious James and his wife Dorothy of Elizabeth City, N. C. her sisters, Dorothy Pritchard and Martha Bateman both of Elizabeth City, N. C. and Marjorie Freeman of Grandy, N. C., her grandchildren, Blair James Tate, Ricky Seymour, Jr. and Darlene Chesson, seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brothers, William John Bateman, Charles Roy Bateman, Leondious Burfoot Bateman, Jr., Ralph Corbett Bateman, Kenneth Arlington Bateman and Joseph Booe Bateman and her sister Margaret Bateman Turner.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, September 29th at 11:00 A. M. at Twiford Memorial Chapel with Rev. Jeffery C. Russell officiating. Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the funeral service in the funeral home lobby and other times at the home of her sister Martha Bateman, 608 Laura Lee Street.

Barton M. Bauers

Barton Muench Bauers, 90, of Manns Harbor, NC died Wednesday, September 26, 2007 in Sentara Nursing Center, Barco, NC. Mr. Barton, born in Philadelphia, PA, was a retired Engineer with General Electric Corp. and a veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was the son of the late Rev. Ulla Edwin Bauers and the late Mary Louise Muench Bauers.

Mr. Bauers is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Ferguson Bauers of the residence; two sons, Barton M. Bauers, Jr. of Wallingford, CT and Robert William Bauers, Sr. of Hammonton, NJ; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

No services are planned at this time.

Anna May Bailey Harris, 97, of 876 Oak Stump Road, Elizabeth City,
N. C. died Tuesday September 25, 2007 at the Guardian Care Nursing Home. Mrs. Harris was born June 22, 1910 in Champaign County, Illinois and was the daughter of the late Hiram Bailey and Mary Ella Todd Bailey. She was preceded in death by her husband Merrill Earl Harris.

Survivors include her daughter; Alice H. Althaus and her husband Gene of Elizabeth City, N. C., her son Thomas M. Harris and his wife Betty of Toledo, Illinois, two sisters Florence Beasley of Urbana, Illinois and Ellen Harges of Hammond, Indiana, her grandchildren Kara Ross-Erb, Mike Althaus, Kim Althaus, her great-grandchildren Kara Ross, Alyssa Ross, Alex Ross and Ling Su Althaus.

The family suggests that memorials be directed to: New Community Church Nursery Fund, 100 Kathryn Circle, Elizabeth City, N.C. 27909.

The family will receive friends Sunday, September 30th from 2:00 P. M. to 4:00 P. M. at the Owens Funeral Home, 101 North Elm Street, Champaign, Illinois.

A funeral service will be held in Monday, October 1st, 2007 at 11:00 A. M. at Owens Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Bailey Memorial Cemetery in Tolono, Illinois.

Joyce Darlene Burkett

Joyce Darlene Burkett, devoted wife and mother, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 22, 2007. Born October 1, 1954, in Greenville, NC, she was the daughter of Joyce Cox of Norfolk, VA and the late John Cox. She had worked as an account manager for Citizens Finance.
Survivors include her husband, Thomas Samuel Burkett of the residence; a daughter, Tammy Joyce Burkett of Durham, NC; a son Jason Thomas Burkett and wife Talyse of Columbia, SC; two sisters Sandra Gould and Carnell Ricks and husband, Dave; a brother Ronnie Cox; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Burkett was preceded in death by her brother, James Cox.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, September 25, at 1:00 p.m. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Reverend Bill Sessoms officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Charlie Franklin Davis, Jr., 70, of 1340 Newland Road, Elizabeth City,
N. C., died Monday, September 24th, 2007 at his residence.

Mr. Davis was born in Great Bridge, VA., and was the son of the late Charlie Franklin Davis and Clarine Temple Davis Carter. He was a member of the Ramoth Gilead Baptist Church, and a retired forklift operator with Norfolk Ford Motor Company Plant.

Survivors include his wife; Patsy Winslow Davis, his daughter Susan Lynn Davis Horne and her husband Michael of Williamsburg, VA. his sons, Frankie Davis and his wife Lori and Tommy Davis and his wife Jamie both of Elizabeth City, N. C. seven grandchildren, Colby Davis, Brandon Davis, Maggie Davis, Trevor Davis, Kelsey Temple, Brittany Horne and Taylor Horne.

A graveside funeral service will be held Wednesday, September 26th, at 3:00 P. M. at West Lawn Cemetery with Rev. Toni Wood officiating. The family will receive friends at the home, 1340 Newland Road.
