Dough, died October 26, 2007 at Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters. Ian is predeceased by his grandmother, Evelyn Carr.
Left to cherish his memory along with his parents are his sister, Kendal; brother, Joseph; grandparents, Marla Wood and her husband David, William Batchelor, Kirk Carr, and John Dough and his wife Joann; Aunts and Uncles, Tasha Tucker and husband Chris, KC Carr, Katie Buffaloe and husband Andy, Adam Batchelor and wife Kristi, Britan Batchelor, Brice and Bobby Batchelor, and Will Batchelor; and his cousins, Gracie, Maddie, Kelsi, Matthew, Abbey, Kenny, Natalie, and Lexie.
A memorial service to celebrate Ian’s life will be held at Twiford’s Colonial Chapel, 929 S. Battlefield Blvd., Chesapeake, on Saturday at 2:00 pm. Lucy Carol Yost
Lucy Carol Yost, 58, of Lakeside Apartments, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, October 30, at the Albemarle Hospital. A native of Pasquotank County, she was the daughter of the late Robert Frank Yost and Nina James Yost. Ms. Yost was a retired telephone operator for the telephone company.
Ms. Yost was a member of Corinth Baptist Church, was part of the Fleet Reserve Association, a member of the Red Hat Women’s Club, an honorary member of the Albemarle Stamp Club, worked with the Girl Scouts, and was active with the CPOA. Ms. Yost is survived by several cousins; Debra Bateman, Delbert Creef, Jon Creef, and Steven Creef; and dear friends, Mary Harris and her family. Other than her parents Ms. Yost was preceded in death by her cousin Carolyn Creef.
A graveside memorial service will be held Friday, November 2nd, 2007, at 2:00 PM in West Lawn Memorial Park. Rev. David Turner will be officiating. Henry Milton “Button” Ownley, Sr.
Henry Milton ‘Button’ Ownley, Sr., age 75, of 960 Woodville Road, Hertford, NC, died Monday, October 29, 2007 at the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Ownley, a native of Perquimans County, was the son of the late Patrick Henry Ownley and Ola Stallings Ownley and the husband of Lena Marie Sorey Ownley. He retired from Ford Motor Company, a member of New Hope United Methodist Church, Indian River Masonic AF & AM Lodge # 44, and the York Rite Bodies.
Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Tina Lunt of Elizabeth City, NC, and Theresa Colson of Maple, NC; two sons, Henry M. Ownley, Jr. of Elizabeth City, NC, and Firman Patrick Ownley of Hertford, NC; two sisters, Mildred Harris of Elizabeth City, NC, and Sara Meadows of Hertford, NC; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and the mother of his children, Bonnie F. Bundy of Elizabeth City, NC.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, October 31, 2007 at 2:00 PM at New Hope UMC with the Rev. Bill Masciangelo officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Hersey “PaPa” Smithson, Sr.
Hersey ‘PaPa’ Smithson, Sr., 82, of 587 North 343 Camden, NC, died Sunday, October 28, 2007, at the Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Camden County, N. C. and was the son of the late Raynor Smithson and Bettie Jones Smithson. Mr. Smithson was a member of the Geneva Baptist Church, and a retired mechanic with the N. C. Forestry Service.
Survivors include a special granddaughter Stephanie Brickhouse and her husband Ray and their children Steven and Amber of Camden; his daughters Patsy Sivills and her husband Bob of Camden, NC, Sue Lane of Elizabeth City, NC, and Sharon Dance of Hertford, NC; his son Hersey Smithson, Jr. and wife Kay of Monroe, NC; his grandchildren, Jennifer Gray, Lisa VanHoy and William, Walter and Melissa Dance; and his great-grandchildren Kaitlyn VanHoy and Avery Gray.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, October 30th, 2007 at 4:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City with Rev. Boyce Porter officiating. The family will receive friends following the memorial service in the funeral home lobby, and other times at the home of his granddaughter Stephanie Brickhouse, 591 North 343, Camden, NC.

Chesapeake- Majorie Baum Parker, 85, passed away on October 28, 2007. She was born in Wheeling, West Virginia to the late Renan and Emma Baum.
Mrs. Parker is predeceased by her husband, William Melvin Parker, Sr. Left to cherish her memories are her daughters, Aileen Hopkins of Charlotte Hall, MD, Jean Burnop of Moyock, NC, Dorothy Patterson of Virginia Beach, Marilyn King of Virginia Beach; her sons, William Parker, Jr. of Montclair, VA and Robert Parker of Chesapeake; her sister, Elizabeth Hanbury of Chesapeake and 10 grandchildren.

Velma Lewis
Chesapeake ‘ Velma Marie Lewis, went home to be with the Lord on October 27, 2007. Mrs. Lewis was born in Martin County, North Carolina, to the late Maggie Bland and Ely A. Roberson. She was one of 14 children and a twin to the late Selma Bowen. She was a member of Great Bridge Church of God.
Left to cherish her memory, her husband of 61 years, Sidney Ray Lewis; two daughters, Nancy Carol Wallace, Judy Kay Creef; two sons, Floyd Ray Lewis, Jimmy Clayton Lewis; one sister, Christine Wagoner and one brother, Leonard Roberson. Mrs. Lewis was predeceased by one grandchild. She is survived by nine grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren. Mrs. Lewis loved her family.

Lisa Sterling Owens Hooper, 47, passed way at her home in Buxton surrounded by loved ones on Saturday, October 27, 2007. She is survived by her husband, Buddy Hooper; her son, Chase Powers Hooper; and her daughter, Avery Sterling Hooper all of the home. Also surviving are her parents, R.V. ‘Bobby’ and Sarah Owens; her brother and his wife, R.V. and Julie Owens and their children, Shannon Owens and Bo Owens; sister-in-law and her husband, Katherine Ann and Bill Smith and their son, Will Smith; brother-in-law and his wife, John and Tracey Hooper and their daughters, Abby Hooper, Laura Hooper, and Amber Schultz; aunts and uncles: Clara Mae and Lionel Shannon, Jr., Marie Ratchford, Elsie Williams, Dorris Fry; Sally and Phil Scarborough, Saint Clair and Bea Basnight, Della Basnight, and Marc Basnight; cousins: Peaches and Jim Eckhardt, Roy Wescott, Jr., Eddie and Joanne Alford, Kathy Urick, Hannon and Lisa Fry, Claudia and Brian Harrington, Fields and Becky Scarborough, Sara Dee and Lee Wise, Pam Jones, Moncie Daniels, Thomas Daniels, Karl Daniels, Vicki Basnight and Caroline Basnight.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Clara Mae and R.V. Owens, Sr. and Edwin J. Alford, Sr. and Cora Mae Basnight; cousin Bubbles Daniels, and a special aunt, Sandy Basnight. In addition to her large extended family, Lisa also leaves a multitude of friends, including two special companions, Brenda Bunting and Renee Burrus.
A native of Manteo, Lisa was a 1978 graduate of Manteo High School and she attended Louisburg College. For several years she worked in the family business, Owens Restaurant. Upon moving to Buxton, she dedicated her life to the children of Hatteras Island. She was a strong supporter of Cape Hatteras Schools where she volunteered in the classrooms and with the Cape Hatteras Booster Club. She was a volunteer at the Fessended Center and with the Hatteras Island Babe Ruth Baseball League.
Lisa was a member of Buxton United Methodist Church where she taught preschool and assisted with childrens activities for many years. She was an accomplished photographer and had a true talent for decorating her home and growing flowers in her yard.
Lisa’s life revolved around Chase and Avery and their many friends. Her legacy is her love of life, love of family, and love of friends. She was a good wife, a loving daughter and sister, a wonderful friend, and she was a great mom.
A celebration of her life was held on Monday, October 29, 2007 at 1:30 PM at Buxton United Methodist Church followed by a graveside service at Manteo Cemetery with the Rev. Cory Oliver and the Rev. Charles Moseley officiating.
Pallbearers were: Darren Burrus, Tommy Gray, Tim Morgan, Bryan Perry, Jimmy Pitetti, and Craig Scarborough. Honorary pallbearers were: Lexi Bunting, Adrian Burrus, Ashley Burrus, Paxton Gwin, and Rachael McDaniel.

MICHELLE McDANIELS CARVER, 33, of 157 South Mill Dam Road, Camden, NC, died Thursday, October 25, 2007 at her residence. She was a native of Pasquotank County, daughter of James Stephen ‘Steve’ McDaniels of Elizabeth City, NC, and the late Marsha ‘Jill’ Luton McDaniels. She was a member of Corinth Baptist Church and a Physical Education Teacher with the Camden County School System.
She is survived by her husband, Kevin A. Carver and daughter, Peyton Grey Carver of the home; brother, Jered McDaniels and wife Mika of Elizabeth City, NC; paternal grandparents, Tom and Aileen McDaniels of Elizabeth City, NC; maternal grandfather, Relfe K. Luton of Elizabeth City, NC. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Billie Meads Luton.
A funeral service will be conducted Sunday, October 28, 2007 in Corinth Baptist Church at 2:00 PM by the Rev. David Turner. Burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery. Shelby Gayle Galloway, 53, of 118 Brickhouse Lane, Lot 13, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, October 24, 2007 in Elizabeth City. She was born in Fredericksburg, VA, the daughter of the late Donald Lee and Beverly Jean Steele Galloway.
Survivors include her companion, Kevin Tyler and his children, Ashley Alvarez and Nathan Tyler, her beloved dog, Apollo; and a brother, Donald Galloway, Jr.. Besides her parents, Mrs. Galloway was preceded in death by her best friend, Cheryl Tyler.

Hulda Midgett Swindell, 80, of Manteo, NC died Thursday, October 25, 2007 at the Outer Banks Hospital. Born in Manteo, NC, she was the daughter of the late Charles F. and Lucille Meekins Midgett. She was a retired cafeteria manager at Manteo Elementary School and was a member of Manteo Faith Baptist Church.
Mrs. Swindell is survived by her husband, William Clark Swindell of the residence; two daughters, Margaret I. Swindell and close friend Randal King of Pinehurst, NC and Beth Cunningham and husband John of Wanchese, NC; a son, Billy Swindell and wife Elizabeth of Nags Head, NC; a sister, Camille Podolski of Kill Devil Hills, NC; a brother, Guy Midgett and wife Marion of Manteo, NC; two step grandchildren, Kelly and Clay Wright; four step great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
