Inez Dunn Robertson, 80, of 1140 Northside Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday January 29, 2009 at Albemarle Hospital.

Mrs. Robertson was born in Pensacola, Florida and was the daughter of the late Archie and Amelia Dunn. She was preceded in death by her husband William Ware Robertson on March 5, 1978.

Survivors include her daughter, Mary Jane Holmes of Kapaa, Hawaii, her grandchildren William Reid and Mary Katherine Jones both of Elizabeth City, NC. Three great-grandchildren Katherine Inez Carter, (Robert), Amy Manning (Joseph) and Amber Kincaid, her five great-great-grandchildren Dylan, Isaiah, Michelle, Harley and Maressa. Also special friends Ed Kincaid and his wife, Kathy.

A graveside funeral service will be held Monday, February 4th, at 11:00 A. M. at Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk, Va. with Chaplain Doug Simons officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon February 3, from 4:30 P. M. to 6:00 P. M. at Twiford Funeral Home Northside Chapel, 1115 North Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC and other times at her home.

JOAN WINSLOW TATEM

Chesapeake ‘ Joan Carol Winslow Tatem, 72, of 1575 John Knox Drive, Colfax, NC, passed away at her home on the morning of January 31, 2008. She had been released from the hospital just the day before after a 5 month long illness.
Mrs.Tatem was a lifelong resident of the Tidewater area, having just moved to North Carolina in 2005 to be nearer her daughter and family. She graduated from South Norfolk High School and was a member of Colonial Baptist Church, Chesapeake, Virginia, where she was active in the work of Missions to Military, Inc.
Survivors include her only child, Kristy Tatem Weatherly and her husband, Douglas Weatherly, two grandchildren, Gregory and Kevin Weatherly, all of Kernersville, North Carolina; and a sister, Beverly Winslow Boyce, of Virginia Beach, Virginia. She was predeceased by her parents, Myron and Maude Winslow, her husband, Gene Holloway Tatem, and a brother, Myron Winslow, of Jacksonville, Florida.
There will be a graveside service at Chesapeake Memorial Gardens on Sunday, February 3, 2008 at 2:00pm, by Pastor Daniel Keith Davey of Colonial Baptist Church, where she will be laid to rest beside her husband. The family will receive friends at Twiford Colonial Chapel, Great Bridge, on Saturday evening from 7 to 8:30 pm. George C. Upton, Jr. 84, of 466 Horseshoe Road, South Mills, NC, died Tuesday January 29, 2008 at the Martin General Hospital in Williamston, NC. Mr. Upton was born in Camden County, NC and was the son of the late George C. Upton, Sr., and Sudie Sanderlin Upton. He was a retired carpenter with Ford Motor Company, member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church, South Mills Order of the Eastern Star # 270, New Lebanon Masonic Lodge # 314 A. F. & A. M., the South Mills Ruritan Club and Horseshoe Hunting Club.

Survivors include his wife, Emory Jackson Upton, his daughter, Barbara Ann Sawyer of South Mills, NC, his son George Calvin Upton, III of South Mills, NC, his sisters Dorothy Powell and Jeannette Onley both of South Mills, his brothers J. C Upton, Billy Upton both of Elizabeth City, NC and Johnny Upton of South Mills, NC, four grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, February 2, 2008 at 11:00 AM at Twiford’s Northside Chapel, 1115 North Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC, with the Rev. Frank Thigpen and Rev. Wade Weatherly officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery with Masonic Rites. The family will receive friends at Twiford Funeral Home, Friday evening from 7:00 P.M. to 8:30 P. Chesapeake- Darline Katherine Newman, 59, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family January 30, 2008. Mrs. Newman was born in Princess Anne County, VA to the late Walter Thompson, Sr. and Irene Thompson Bridges.
Left to cherish her memories are her husband, Andrew Doyal Newman; her daughters,Angela Walker of N. Alice Harrison Parker, 90, of Old Mill Road, Chesapeake, VA., died Monday January 28, 2008 at the Pungo District Hospital in Belhaven, NC. Mrs. Parker was the daughter of the late James Allen Harrison and Armelia Hall Harrison. She was preceded in death by her husband Christopher Harvey Parker, Sr., her daughter, Katherine P. Baines, three brothers and one sister.

Survivors include her sons; Chris H. Parker, Jr. and his wife Doris of Pinetown, NC and David Lee Parker and his wife Sharon of Suffolk, VA. eight grandchildren and eighteen- great grandchildren

A graveside funeral service will be held Thursday January 31, 2008 at 11:00 A. M. at the Cypress Chapel Christian Church Cemetery with Rev. John Wolfe officiating. Charles Thomas Gregory

Charles fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith as he lost his battle with cancer in his home Saturday, January 26, 2008. He was surrounded by family, when he crossed the threshold into God’s glory. He was born in Salisbury, Md. Sept. 10, 1932, the son of ‘T.Z.’ and Mary Pauline Gregory. Charles was a resident of Va. Beach for 45 years and an active member of Haygood United Methodist Church. He served as scoutmaster of Troop # 363 for 10 years and earned numerous awards, including the prestigious Silver Beaver award. He then served as a PAVAB District Commissioner for three years. Following his retirement from Beach Ford in 1997, Charles answered God’s call to enter the ministry. He served the Iron Gate United Methodist Charge in the Clifton Forge, Va. area. The charge consisted of Longdale, Walton Memorial, and Iron Gate United Methodist Churches. Upon his second retirement in 2005, he moved to Grandy, NC to be near his family, and spoil his great grandchildren as he had his grandchildren. He became an active member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Grandy.
Charles is survived by: Polly his loving wife of over 52 years, two sons and their wives; Bob and Sandy, of Williamstown NJ, Tom and Carla, of Southern Shores, NC, six grandchildren; April, Jamie, Dylan, Mandie, Jennifer and Courtney, five great grandchildren; Lilly, Matthew, Elizabeth, Morgan and Mila, one sister; Barbara Lewis of South Mills, NC, and three brothers; Jim of Delmar, Md., Walter of Olympia, WA, and Jerry of Savannah, GA. He was predeceased by two brothers, Bill and Russell.
There will be a memorial service at Haygood United Methodist Church, 4713 Haygood Rd., Va. Beach, Va. Thurs. January 31 at 1:00 p.m., officiated by Rev. Chuck Shumate and Rev. David J. Blackman. A second memorial service will be held Fri., February 1, 2008 at 1:00 p.m., at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, 6480 Caratoke Hwy, Grandy, NC officiated by Rev. David J. Blackman. Haygood’s Columbarium will be the final resting place for Charles’s remains.

Elizabeth Calvert Burton Donaldson, 97, widow of Emmett Vaughan Donaldson, passed away on Monday, January 28, 2008. She was born on September 26, 1910, in Norfolk County, Virginia, and was a lifelong resident of Portsmouth, living in Craddock for many years. She was the daughter of John and Mary Burton.
She was retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard, and was a member of Victory Chapter No. 16 of O.E.S., Past Matrons and Patrons, Portsmouth Scottish Rite Ladies, and a long time member of Craddock Baptist Church.
Her sons, Paul Lee Donaldson and Robert Burton Donaldson, and his wife, Ann Murphy Donaldson, predeceased her. She is survived by grand-daughter Vickie D. Keith and her husband Russell, grand-daughter Susan D. Harris, two great-grandsons, Carlton V. Keith and Wesley Griffith, and her daughter-in-law, Barbara M. Donaldson.
The family wishes to thank the caregivers and staff at Maryview Nursing Care Center and Bon Secours Hospice for their love, care and friendship.
A graveside memorial service will be held at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake, Virginia on Friday, February 15, 2008 at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

Otis Lee Willis died January 25, 2008. Known as Junior to his family and friends, he was born August 4, 1942 to Alivia Barnett Willis and Otis Lee Willis, Sr. In addition to his parents, Mr. Willis was predeceased by two sisters, Shirley and Janet. He is survived by his wife, Brenda Gray Willis, son Kelly Lee Willis, sister Katrene Johnson, brother Wayne Willis, mother ‘in-law Retta Meekins Gray, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, in laws and friends. A reception honoring his life will be held at his residence on Wednesday, January 30, 2008 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. All family and friends are invited to attend. In accordance with his wishes, he will be cremated and his ashes will be scattered from Cape Lookout to Oregon Inlet at a later date. The family requests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of a donation in Mr. Willis’ name to the charity of one’s choice. Twiford’s Island Chapel Hatteras is assisting the family.
