Ruby Carroll Stanley, 89, of 121 Windmere Drive, Hertford, NC., died Monday, February 25, 2008 at the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Stanley was a native of Smithfield, VA; the daughter of Benjamin Goodrich and Mary Lankford Carroll and wife of the late Carl H. Stanley. She was a member of Piney Woods Friends Meeting in Belvidere, NC.
Mrs. Stanley is survived by a son, Charles B. Stanley and wife Hope Winslow Stanley of Hertford, NC; a sister Jenny Marie Gladden of Virginia Beacvh, VA; eight grand-children, Donalee Holston, Stephanie Stanle-Winslow, Richard Strouse, Denna Davis, Elizabeth Stanley-Cippriano, Hope Renee Reilly, Donald B. Reilly and Danna Reilly-Allison; 12 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by a daughter, Carolyn Marie McDonald.
A Memorial ‘Homecoming Celebration’ will be held Sunday, March 9, 2008 at 3:00 PM in Piney Woods Friends Meeting in Belvidere, NC with Pastor David Frank Carter officiating. The family will visit with friends in the Fellowship Hall following the service. The family will be at the residence located at 121 Windmere Drive, Hertford, NC. Everett Tate
Nags Head, NC
Everett Douglas Tate, 83, died February 26, 2008, at Outer Banks Hospital. He was born in the village of Duck, son of the late Ruth Scarborough Tate and Samson D. Tate. He was also predeceased by a son, Frank Elliott Tate.
During World War II, he served in the United States Navy. Following the war, he also served three years in the United States Coast Guard. He retired as Postmaster at the Nags Head Post Office. Throughout his life, a love of commercial fishing never escaped him. He especially enjoyed mullet fishing. He was captain of a shrimp boat in Charleston, South Carolina, where he met Suzanne, his wife of 54 years. Returning to Dare County in 1961, he opened and operated Tate’s Landing, a bait and tackle shop, for four years on the Nags Head Causeway.
Besides Suzanne, he is survived by his son, Mark D. Tate, and wife, Pam; grandsons, Scott and Grant, and nephew, Douglas Cornette.
For 46 years, he was a member of Duck United Methodist Church. A funeral service will be held there on Saturday, March 1, 2008 at 2 p.m., followed by a graveside service and burial in Austin Cemetery, Kitty Hawk. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Funeral Home, Friday evening 7-9 p.m. and also at the home, 403 Villa Dunes Drive in Nags Head.

James Harrison
James E. Harrison
Chesapeake- James Edward Harrison. 84, passed away February 27, 2008. He was born in Brunswick, Georgia to the late Samuel and Myrtice Harrison. Mr. Harrison was an avid fisherman, hunter and gardener. He was a member and past president of the United Hunt Club. Mr. Harrison served his country during WWII in the United States Army and was the recipient of the Bronze Star.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth Johnson Harrison; his daughters, Nancy Lynne Harrison of Williamsburg, Patricia Harrison Fulton and husband Butch of Norfolk, Jimmie Ann Campbell of Maryland, Janie Harrison Bailey and husband Ronald of Chesapeake; his son, James E. Harrison, Jr. and wife Donna of Chesapeake; his sister Catherine Harris of Virginia Beach; his brother, Charles Harrison of Norfolk; and his eight grandchildren, Jim, Tristan, Leigh, Elizabeth, Jerrie Ann, Ryan, Brittany, and Jacob and six great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends, Friday evening, 7:00 to 8:30 pm at Twiford Colonial Chapel, 929 S. Battlefield Blvd., Chesapeake. The funeral service will be Saturday, 11:00 am at the funeral home with Rev. Charles Harrison officiating. Richard Flatau
Nags Head, NC
Richard G. Flatau, 60, of Nags Head, NC died Sunday, February 24, 2008 at his residence. He was born in Secane, PA but lived most of his life in Philadelphia. While in Philadelphia, Mr. Flatau was a parishioner and very active in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the Philadelphia Jaycees, and helped with training physically disabled children which eventually grew into the Special Olympics. After retiring to Nags Head, NC he became a parishioner of Holy Redeemer by the Sea Catholic Church and a member of the Nags Head Golf Links.
Mr. Flatau will be dearly missed by his wife, Karen DelVacchio, and Thelma and Louise all of the residence; and a host of golf buddies, friends, and relatives.
The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated by Father John Dorgan at Holy Redeemer by the Sea Catholic Church in Kitty Hawk, NC on Saturday, March 1, 2008. The Funeral Mass will begin at 10:00 AM. Following the mass a luncheon reception will be held at Lone Cedar Cafe. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 4217 Park Place Ct., Glen Allen, VA 23060.

Barbara Riggs Utley
Barbara Riggs Utley, 69, a former resident of Chesapeake, VA., died at Guadalupe Regional Medical Center, in Seguin, Texas, on Saturday, February 23, 2008. Born in Camden County, Old Trap, NC, she was the daughter of Lemuel T. Riggs, and the late Elizabeth Pierce Riggs. Mrs. Utley was a retired Insulator at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, a member of the Ladies Auxiliary V. F. W. Post # 837 in San Antonio, TX., and a member of Riddle Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Mrs. Utley is survived by two sons, Robert D. Utley of Texas, and Terry Lynn Utley of Arkansas; two sisters Mary Banks and Teresa Sawyer, both of Hertford, NC; three brothers, Grady T. Riggs of Old Trap, NC, Lemuel Lee Riggs of Elizabeth City, NC, and Glen Riggs of Camden, NC; and seven grandchildren. Besides her mother, she was predeceased by one brother Johnny Riggs.
A funeral service will be held Friday, February 29th at 2:00 P. M. at Twiford Funeral Home Chapel, 405 East Church Street with Rev. Roland Cooper officiating. Burial will be West Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the funeral service in the funeral home lobby and other times at the home of Glen Riggs, 137 Upton Road, Camden, NC.

Ellen Irene DeOre Kyles, age 57, of 502 Muddy Creek Road, Hertford, NC, died Friday, February 22, 2008 at Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Kyles, the daughter of Lillian Geller DeOre of Norfolk, VA, and the late Donald Anthony DeOre was the wife of Dennis Harold Kyles of Hopewell, VA. She was a homemaker and a member of Destiny Christian Center.
She is also survived by two sons, Donald Kyles of Hopewell, VA and Anthony C. Kyles of Suffolk, VA; a sister, Doris Lightheart of Hertford, NC; and eight grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, John Allen Kyles.

Donald Douglas Niskanen, Jr.
Frisco, NC
Donald Douglas Niskanen, Jr., 50, of Frisco, NC died Saturday, February 23, 2008 in Nags Head. Born in Portsmouth, VA, he was the son of the late Donald Douglas Niskanen, Sr. and Janice Rollinson Niskanen. He was formerly a deck hand with the NCDOT ‘ Ferry Division and an EMT with Dare County.
Mr. Niskanen is survived by an uncle, Hilton Rollinson of Frisco, NC.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, February 25, 2008 at 2:00 PM at Little Grove United Methodist Church by the Rev. Cory Oliver and the Rev. Dwight Burrus. Burial will be in the family cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives at the church on Sunday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM.

Royal “Hutch” Hutchinson
Royal Hutchinson
Knotts Island- Royal ‘Hutch’ Hutchinson, 86, went to be with his Lord and Savior February 22, 2008. Mr. Hutchinson was born in Appling County, GA to the late Jenny Carter and William Franklin Hutchinson. He is also predeceased by his son, Johnny Hutchinson. Mr. Hutchinson was a member of Knotts Island Baptist Church where he became an ordained deacon in 1977. Hutch served his country in the United States Coast Guard where he earned the rank of Chief before retiring. Upon his retirement Hutch began a career as a commercial waterman for some 25 years because of his love for the water. He later became a charter member of the Back Bay Chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Hutch also was a charter member of the Knotts Island Ruritan Club. He was a founding member of the Knotts Island Fire Department where he was a past Chief. In 1996
Hutch was elected Knotts Island Community Citizen of the Year. Hutch was loved by all who knew him. He knew no stranger and his generosity was known by all who met him. He will be missed.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 60 years, Cassie Waterfield Hutchinson; daughters, Kathy L. Aydlett and husband Vance, and Brenda H. Hammaker; sister, Winnie Doyle; brothers, Lanis Hutchinson, Way Hutchinson, and Billy Hutchinson; grandchildren, Mandi and Chris Conner, Jason and Stephanie Roach, and Sabrina Aydlett; and great-grandchildren, Christopher and Madisan Conner.
The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Knotts Island Baptist Church. The funeral will be Tuesday at 3:00 pm at the church with Pastors Chuck Mann, Jack Sauls, and Bobby Brinkley officiating. Burial will follow at Knotts Island Cemetery.

Carmel Martinez
Virginia Beach- Carmel Martinez, 100, passed away on February 23, 2008 at Hospice, Sentara Nursing Home. Carmel was born in Pueblo, Colorado on December 23, 1907. She lived most of her life in Colorado and California and moved to Virginia Beach in 1994. She was predeceased by her husband, Lloyd Martinez, and one son, James Martinez.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Priscilla and Bob Poulin of Virginia Beach; and by three sons and their wives, Glen and Pat Martinez of Paonia, Colorado, Harold and Marilyn Martinez of Sylmar, California, and Donald Martinez of Grass Valley, California. She also leaves behind 22 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. One grandson and his wife, Michael and Marion Poulin, live in Virginia Beach. The family wishes to thank Laura and Lois of Skilled Care at Sentara for their loving care of Carmel.
A celebration of Carmel’s life will be held at St. Nicholas Catholic Church by Msgr. Raymond Barton at 11:00 am on Wednesday, February 27. Visitation will be in the Chapel of St. Nicholas on Tuesday, February 26 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm. A reception will follow the Mass on Wednesday. After cremation, the ashes will be taken to California for inurnment. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Nicholas Chapel Renovation Fund in honor of Carmel. Milton V. Hooper
Stumpy Point, NC
Milton Vance Hooper, 82, of Stumpy Point, NC passed away at his home on Friday, February 22, 2008. He was the son of the late Melton and Maude Hooper. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nita Midgett Hooper, brothers, Floyd, Tom and Troy Hooper, sisters, Eloise Monette and Sybil Boomer.
He loved God and was ready to hear his Heavenly Father say, ‘Welcome home, son.’
Milton was a WWII veteran and spent most of his life working as a commercial fisherman, doing the work that he loved.
He is survived by a son, Doug Hooper and wife, Sheryl; daughters, Ann Mason and husband Jack and Sharon Eure and husband, John; grandchildren, Tracy Carawan, Todd Mason, Kelly Gibbs, Heather Francis, Jason Hooper and six great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Bayview Chapel, Stumpy Point, on Sunday, February 24, 2008 at 3:00 pm with Rev. John DeCarmo officiating. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service.
