Harold Otto

Chesapeake- Harold (Hal) Frank Otto, 87, passed away March 30, 2008. Mr. Otto was a retired United States Air Force Pilot. He flew in World War II and the Korean War, as well as with the U.S. Air Force in Europe (U.S.A.F.E.) in the 1950′s. He pursued a second career in computers with WANG Laboratory Inc. and The Unidyne Corp. He was a member of the Sewell’s Point Men’s Golf Association. He created a computer program for calculating golfers’ handicaps.
Mr. Otto is survived by his biologic daughter, Catherine Hamner of Sewanee, TN., and a daughter, Margrit Frazier of San Antonio, TX. Twiford Funeral Home, Chesapeake, will handle arrangements. Barbara H. Smith

Kill Devil Hills, NC

Barbara Ann Hollister Smith, 63, of Kill Devil Hills, NC died Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at the Outer Banks Hospital in Nags Head. Mrs. Smith was born in Caneada, NY and was a secretary with local government. She was the daughter of the late George and Betty Damon Hollister.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband, Charles A. Smith of the residence; two sisters, Judith Fix of Franklin, OH and Peggy Ertell of Olean, NY and a brother, James Hollister of Columbia, SC.

A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date at the Colington United Methodist Church.

Violet Keller Meekins

KITTY HAWK, NC

Violet Keller Meekins, a native and long time resident of Kitty Hawk, passed peacefully on May 28, 2008. Mrs. Meekins was a homemaker and member of Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church. She served in many leadership positions within the church, a member and past president of United Methodist Women where she also served as a district officer in the Elizabeth City district, Dare County Church Women United, past president of the order of the Eastern Star Roanoke Island Chapter #79 where she held leadership positions, past president of the First Flight Lions Club and a member of the Red Hat Club. Violet lived many years in Chesapeake, VA where she was a devoted member and leader of Chesapeake Ave United Methodist Church. She bowled regularly and was an avid bridge player.

Mrs. Meekins was the daughter of the late Earl Raymond and Belinda Perry Keller and the wife of Thomas Alston Meekins of Kitty Hawk.

Besides her husband surviving are one daughter, Karen Meekins Friel and husband Dr. Patrick J. Friel III of Oakton, VA; one son, Douglas C. Meekins and wife Martha of Kitty Hawk; Daughter-In- Law, Nancy Meekins of Kill Devil Hills; one sister, Sandra K. Sawyer and one brother, Michael Keller both of Manteo. Five grandchildren, Carrie Dilworth, Ryan Meekins, Lindsey Meekins, Erin Meekins, and Margaret Friel. Two great grandsons and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Meekins was pre-deceased by her son Thomas A. Meekins, Jr.

A celebration of life will be in Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church Saturday May 31, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. by Rev. John Check with burial in Austin Cemetery in Kitty Hawk. Friends may join the family at Twiford’s Funeral Home Friday from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Virgie Perry Cox Scholarship Fund.

Sally Robert Damon

Sally Robert Damon, 93, a former resident of Marshfield, MA., died Thursday, May 29, 2008 at Guardian Care Nursing Home in Elizabeth City, N. C. Mrs. Damon was born in Salem, MA, and was the daughter of the late Henry Roberts and Florence Dow Roberts. She was a retired postal clerk in Marshfield Hills, MA.

She is survived by one son, Alexander ‘Alex’ W. Crowers and his wife Lurleane of Elizabeth City, NC and six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Burial will be in Sunderland, VT. at a later date.

Elsie Saunders Merrell

Elsie Saunders Merrell, 96, of 856 Aydlett Road, Aydlett, NC, died Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at the Outer Banks Hospital. She was born in Poplar Branch, NC, the daughter of the late Ellie Wilson and Bessie Owens Saunders and was the widow of Tillman Merrell. Mrs. Merrell was a retired Post Master of the Aydlett Post Office, a member of Sharon United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Coinjock Chapter #218 OES, and was a former member of the Poplar Branch Arts & Crafts.

A devoted wife of 76 years to Mr. Tillman Merrell who died March 30, 2008 is survived by a daughter, Jeanette M. Vitasek of Chesapeake, VA; two sons, T. Wayne Merrell of Aydlett, NC and Dan L. Merrell of Kill Devil Hills, NC; two sisters, Norma Barco of Grandy, NC and Hazel Hawkins of Chesapeake, VA; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held Sunday, June 1, 2008 at 2:00 pm in Mount Zion United Methodist Church with Rev. David Blackman and Rev. Renee Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in the Saunders Family Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends at the residence. Earlene Cartwright Williams

Earlene Cartwright Williams, 72, of 316 Pearl Street, Elizabeth City, N. C. died Tuesday May, 27, 2008 at W. R. Winslow Memorial Home. Mrs. Williams was born in Camden County, N. C. and was the daughter of Mary Kight Cartwright Mishler and the late Earl Cartwright. She was a former inspector at the Elizabeth City Hosiery Mill, and also employed with the Elizabeth City Schools in the cafeteria, The Dollar Store and the Salvation Army Thrift Store.

Survivors include her husband, Charles Williams of Elizabeth City, her mother, Mary Kight Cartwright Mishler of Elizabeth City, her daughter, Darlene W. Copeland and her husband, Lang of Elizabeth City, her sons, Ronald Williams and wife, Cheri of Avon, N. C. and James Williams of Dallas, TX., her sisters, Betty Price and Clarice Flowers both of Elizabeth City, her brothers, Bobby Cartwright of Camden, NC, John Mishler of Florida, Lawrence Mishler of Chesapeake, VA, Marty Mishler of Elizabeth City, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son Charles Earl Williams and her brother Alton Earl Cartwright.

A graveside funeral service will be held Friday, May 30th at 1:30 P. M. at New Hollywood Cemetery Pastor Lloyd Meads officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday, May 29th from 7:00 P.M. to 8:30 P. M. at Twiford Funeral Home, 405 East Church Street and other times at 316 Pearl Street.

William L. Hauschild

Kill Devil Hills, NC

William Louis Hauschild, 74, of Colington Harbour, NC died Wednesday, May 28, 2008 in an Elizabeth City hospital. Mr. Hauschild, born in Greensburg, PA, was a general manager of several wire rope manufacturing companies and was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was a graduate of the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio and was an Eagle Scout. He was active in the Baum Center, the Senior Games and in local politics.

Mr. Hauschild was the son of the late Lester Paul and Margaret McKee Hauschild.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Crymble Hauschild of the residence; six daughters, Wendy Wainscott of Ruther Glen, VA, Jamie Wood and husband, Brian of Colington Harbour, NC, Kelly Moody and husband, Rich of Danbury, CT, Karin Hauschild and husband, John Carwile of Ottowa, Canada, Peggy Matthews of Mechanicsville, VA and Loui Beacham and husband, Tim of Kitty Hawk, NC; a brother, Lester P. Hauschild of New Castle, PA; fifteen grandchildren, Jennifer Cowell and husband, Brian, Jeremy Wainscott, Casey Pugh and husband, Ryan, Cody Wainscott and wife, Tori, Mackenzie Wood, R.J. Moody and Stephanie Moody, Katie Carwile, Maddie Carwile, Kelsey Matthews, Haley Matthews, Harper Matthews, Sarah Beacham, Samuel Beacham and Maggie Beacham; three great-grandchildren, Kaidon Pugh, Kolby Pugh and Hunter Cowell.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church on Sunday, June 1, 2008 at 2:00 pm with Rev. John Check officiating. Burial will be in Austin Cemetery, Kitty Hawk. John William ‘Jack’ Amatucci, Jr., 50, of Kill Devil Hills, NC died Sunday, May 25, 2008 at Sentara Norfolk Heart Hospital. Mr. Amatucci was born in Washington, DC, and was a chef. He was the son of John W. Amatucci, Sr. of Daytona Beach, FL and the late Druscilla Steinecke Amatucci.

Viktoria Maria Sewell, born March 12, 2008 at Norfolk, VA died May 26, 2008 at Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughter. Viktoria was the daughter of Mark Alan and Ramona Maria Weber Sewell of Camden, NC. She is survived by her maternal grandparents, Alfred and Gerda Weber of Germany; and her paternal grandparents, Wilmot and Shelia Sewell of Camden, NC.

Linda Carol Spitzer-Naylor, 56, of 705 Okisko Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, May 27, 2008 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Edenton, NC, the daughter of Retta Hooper Spitzer Brock and friend Billy White and the late Frank Blades Spitzer and was the wife of Jimmy Naylor. Mrs. Spitzer-Naylor was a U.S. Postal Service Mail Carrier and a member of Mount Herman United Methodist Church.

Besides her husband and mother, Linda is survived by a daughter, Tammi Bryant of Greenville, NC; a son, Brock Bryant and wife Terrie of Kill Devil Hills, NC; two brothers, Steve Spitzer and friend Elizabeth Marx of Elizabeth City, NC, and Jay Brock and wife Angela of Weston, FL; two sisters, Judy Old and husband Kevin of South Mills, NC, and Jill Short and husband Charlie of Georgetown, DE; six grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Terri Ann Bryant.
