Nicholas V. Prencipe

Nicholas Vincent Prencipe, 82, of Manteo, died Friday, August 29, 2008 at his residence. Mr. Prencipe was born in Washington, DC and was a Director of Personnel for the Arlington Public School System. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was the son of the late Vincent and Antoinette Prencipe. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Nickie Annette Prencipe.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Jean Prencipe of the residence; a daughter, Antonia Korby and husband, William of Centerville, VA; a son, Vincent Michael Prencipe and wife Loretta of Alexandria, VA; five grandchildren, Ryan, Jess and Skylar Korby, and Ciara and Holly Prencipe.

A memorial service will be held at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church on Sunday, August 31, 2008, at 3:00pm with the Rev. Bettie Francis officiating.

Twiford Colony Chapel, Manteo is assisting the family with arrangements.

Jerry Ike Wooten

Captain Jerry Ike Wooten, Sr. 60, of 805 North Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC, passed away after a brave battle with lung cancer. He was born on October 6, 1947 to the late Bob and Myrtle Wooten in Dekalb, AL. Mr. Wooten was a loving family man and a devoted Captain aboard Tug Chief. During his service to the U.S. Air Force, he served in Vietnam and Thailand.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 34 years, Mrs. Violet Wooten, a son, Jerry Wooten, Jr. and wife Liz; a daughter, Julie Parker and husband Leslie; five granddaughters, Madison Wooten, Jacki, Courtney, Caroline, and Mackenzie Parker all of Elizabeth City, NC; a sister, Irene Wilson and husband Lawson; four brothers, Danny Wooten, Jack Wooten and wife Rose, Tommy Wooten and wife Connie, and Hank Wooten and wife Judy; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Bob Wooten, Jr.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, September 2, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. at Twifords Memorial Chapel with Minister Lorrie W. Meads officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors rendered by V.F.W. Post #6060. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7:00 P.M. to 8:30 P.M. at Twiford Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Daniel Whitehead

Daniel E. Whitehead
Norfolk Virginia Petty Officer Third Class Submarine Electronic Technician, Navigator Daniel Ellis Whitehead, 22, passed away suddenly from complications of routine surgery at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Portsmouth Virginia, on August 28, 2008. He joined the United States Navy in January of 2005 and was serving on the USS Norfolk SSN-714. Mr. Whitehead was born in Concord, Massachusetts and has lived in Burlington and Whitinsville MA and most recently Woodstock Ct, before his enlistment. He will be sadly missed by his father, Dean Whitehead, stepmother Daryl Hartman and sister, Alex Whitehead of Woodstock, CT. ; mother Karin Oakes and stepfather Bill Oakes and brother Chris Oakes of Burlington, MA; his grandmother, Edith Whitehead of West Concord, MA; an aunt, Marion Pacific ; uncles, Donald Whitehead, Mark Whitehead, Keith Whitehead; and numerous cousins and extended family.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Arthur Whitehead, of Hyde Park MA and Helga and Dieter Galler of Chelmsford MA.
A military service with full honors was held at the Norfolk Naval Base, Norfolk, VA. Sept. 4, 2008. A memorial service is planned at the East Woodstock Congregational Church; Woodstock, CT on Sept. 21, 2008 at 2pm. All are welcome and any condolences may be expressed to the family.

Helen Wells Lopez

Helen Wells Lopez, of Washington, DC died at her residence on Thursday, August 21, 2008. She was born in Elizabeth City, NC to the late John Louis and Minnie Lou Bell Wells and was the devoted wife of the late Frank Lopez. Mrs. Lopez demonstrated her love for people by giving of her time at the National Cathedral’s Thrift Shop and a volunteer worker for many years for Meals on Wheels, Ward Circle-Georgetown, Washington, DC. She was a Methodist.

She is survived by a daughter, Lou Lopez Segner and husband, Scott, of Maryland, a granddaughter, Alison Beard Babka and husband, Scott, of England, UK and a great grandson, Jack Joseph Babka of England. Also, surviving are two sisters, Dora Wells Twiford and Frances Bell Wells both of Elizabeth City, NC, a sister-in-law, Patricia Wells of Florida and a host of nieces, nephews and close friends. She was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret W. Foxwell and a brother, John L. Wells, Jr.

In keeping with her wishes, she will be cremated and her urn will be placed in Arlington National Cemetery next to her beloved husband. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Jennie S. Bray

Jennie Seymour Bray, 93, of 609 Alton Street, Elizabeth City, NC died Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at her residence. She was born in Camden County, NC to the late Horacio and Florence Cartwright Seymour and was the widow of the late B. Frank Bray. Mrs. Bray was a member of the Hertford Baptist Church and formerly worked in the health care industry as a sitter.

She is survived by two sons, Eddie A. Bray and wife, Linda, of Elizabeth City, NC and William F. Bray and wife, Anne, of Lexington, SC; eight grandchildren, Linda P Harrison, Joe Parrish, Johnny Parrish, Suzy Woodell, Jennie Bray, William F. Bray, Jr., Dawn Hale, and Eddie A. Bray, Jr. Also, surviving are 8 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ann Elizabeth Parrish, a sister, Lucille S. Jennings, three brothers, Boyd Seymour, Eddie Seymour, and Horace Seymour.

Graveside services will be conducted Friday, August 29, 2008, at 11:00am in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery by Rev. David Turner. The family will receive family and friends at Twiford Funeral Home, Church Street, Thursday evening from 7:00 until 8:30pm and at other times at their residence, 609 Alton Street, Elizabeth City. Preston Hocutt

Preston Hocutt, 86, of 571 Cooper Garrett Road, Moyock, NC, died Wednesday, August 27, 2008 at Sentara Barco Nursing Home. Mr. Hocutt was born in Selma County, NC to the late Robert Fitue and Goldie Mae Green Hocutt, and was the husband of Mrs. Allene Jernigan Hocutt of the residence.

Besides his wife, Mr. Hocutt is survived by his sons, Mark Hocutt and his wife Tina of Currituck, NC, Jerry Hocutt of Beaufort, NC, and Bruce Hocutt and wife Terri of Currituck, NC; his sister, Goldie Rose Jernigan and her husband William of Smithfield, NC; ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A son, Larry Hocutt, predeceases Mr. Hocutt.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 30, 2008 in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel at 3:00 P.M. with Rev. Johnny McDonald officiating. Burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Lula Smith Allen, 77, of Riverview Ave., Camden, NC died Monday, August 25, 2008 at Martin General Hospital in Williamston, NC. She was a native of Illinois, daughter of the late Arthur and Nellie Smith. She was the widow of the late Sam Arch Allen.

Mrs. Allen is survived by a son, David Reid of Boco Raton, Florida.

Virginia Beach – Alberta ‘Joy’ Turley, 61, passed away August 27, 2008. She was born in Covington, Kentucky to the late Ed Creech and Julia Rose Logston.
Survivors include her son, Jerry Wayne Turley, Jr., and his wife Lisa Turley of Chesapeake; her two sisters, Ramona Kohn and her
husband David and Priscilla Wainscott; her fianc, Richard Hill; her grandchildren, Mike, Matt and Danielle; two great-grandchildren; one niece and two nephews.
The funeral services will be Saturday, at Lake Drummond Baptist Church. Viewing will begin at 1:00 pm and the service will follow at 2:00 pm. Rev. Buddy Hoggard will officiate.

Loraine Pierce Forbes

Loraine Pierce Forbes, 91, lifetime resident of Riddle, NC, went home to be with her Lord and her husband on Monday, August 25, 2008. She was born in Camden County, NC, the daughter of the late Benjamin and Lydia Forbes Pierce and was the widow of Charlie Weston Forbes. She was a member of Christ Sanctified Holy Church, Old Trap, NC.

Mrs. Forbes is survived by her son Carlton Forbes and his wife Linda of Elizabeth City, NC, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, William Joseph Forbes, two sisters, and four brothers.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, August 28, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Thomas Mustin and Rev. Bernard Collier officiating. Burial will be in the Forbes Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7:00 until 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. They will also receive friends at other times at the residence of Mrs. Forbes’ son, Carlton Forbes, 93 Quail Run, Pine Lakes, Elizabeth City, NC, and immediately following the service Thursday at the funeral home.
