Dorothy Carden Lewey, 82, of Manns Harbor, NC died Monday, September 29, 2008 at the Outer Banks Hospital, Nags Head. Mrs. Lewey was born in Durham, NC and was a retired Banking Officer for East Carolina Bank.
She was the daughter of the late William Bryant and Naomi McCorkle Carden.
Mrs. Lewey is survived by her husband, Walter Layton Lewey of the residence; a daughter, Sue Ellen Cox and husband, David of Graham, NC; a son, Luther W. ‘Boog’ Nash, II and wife, JoAnn of Burlington, NC; a sister, Billie Jean Woods of Morehead City, NC; two brothers, David Carden and wife, Betty Jean of Hatteras, NC and Jack Carden and wife, Mickie of Tuscon, AZ; five grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; three nieces, one nephew; and the boys, Brutus and Cesar.
A Service of Remembrance will be held at Twiford Colony Chapel, Manteo on Saturday, October 4, 2008 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Verlie Hinkley
Verlie Eula Wallace Hinkley, 91, 157 Mulberry Lane, Hertford, NC, died Tuesday, September 30, 2008 peacefully with her family at home. She was born in Coffee County, GA, the daughter of the late William Kearr and Mary Maude Brooker Wallace and was the widow of Curtis R. Hinkley. She was a member of Bayside Church of Christ.
Survivors include her son, Curtis R. Hinkley, Jr. and wife Lynn of Elizabeth City, NC; three granddaughters, Stephanie L. Hinkley-Lopez and husband Mario of Hertford, NC, and Sarah L. Wenninger and husband Steve of Boston, MA, and Cynthia R. Hinkley of Elizabeth City, NC; and two great grandchildren, Logan F. Wenninger and Cameron R. Wenninger.
A funeral service will be held Monday, October 6, 2008 at 11:00 am in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Pastor Chris Reno officiating. Burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery. Ida Ophelia Roberts Robertson
Ida Ophelia Roberts Robertson, age 90 of 456 Indian Town Road, Shawboro, NC died Monday, September 29, 2008, at her residence. Mrs. Robertson was born in Currituck, NC, the daughter of the late James Monroe Roberts and Ida Charlotte Perkins Roberts and was the widow of Samuel Thompson Robertson. She was a retired Home Economist, a member of Providence Baptist Church, and a lifetime member of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. She was a graduate of East Carolina University.
Mrs. Robertson is survived by one sister, Doris R. Skiba of Shawboro, NC and two brothers, Edward Roberts and Wilbert Roberts, both of Shawboro, NC. She was predeceased by eight brothers.
Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Charles M. Stevens officiating. Jack Layden
Native of Perquimans County, NC
Jasper ‘Jack’ Layden, 84, of Belvidere, NC, passed away at Albemarle Hospital, Tuesday, September 23, 2008. He was born in Perquimans County, NC, the son of the late James Herbert and Lonnie Asbell Layden, and was the widower of Hattie Wilder Layden.
Survivors include his nieces Carol Jo Evans of Elizabeth City, NC and Sandra Faye Morgan of Clearwater, FL; and nephew, James (Jimmy) Morgan of Atlanta, GA. Besides his wife and parents, Mr. Layden was preceded in death by his brothers, Prestley and James Layden. His family will remember him for his strong character and talent for bird whistles and yodeling. The family would also like to thank Albemarle Home Care and Home Life Care for their support and care over the last few years.
A graveside funeral service will be held Monday, September 29, 2008 at 2:00 PM in the Asbell Family Cemetery, Belvidere, NC. Edith Wenger
Edith Grace Hertzler Wenger, 87 passed away on September 26, 2008 in her home in Chesapeake. Her devoted husband of 66 years, John D. Wenger and members of the family gid her a tearful goodbye. A devout Christian and long time member of the Mt. Pleasant Mennonite Church, she leaves behind many friends and family members who will cherish the memories and her sense of humor.
Memorial service will be held Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008 at the Mt Pleasant Mennonite Church on Mt. Pleasant Roadt at 2:30 pm.

Henry H. Wantz, Sr.
Virginia Beach ‘ Henry Hook Wantz, Sr., 72, passed away September 27, 2008. Mr. Wantz was born in Westminster, Maryland to the late Henry and May Wantz. He served in the United States Navy for 25 years.

Clyde Norman Hartman, 84, of 4309 Worthington Lane, Kitty Hawk, NC died Friday, September 26, 2008 at his residence. Born in Mount Pleasant, NC, he was the son of the late Clyde and Letha Hatley Hartman and was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth G. Hartman.
Mr. Hartman is survived by his wife, Beverly Trotman of the residence; four daughters, Norma Jean Gatlin and husband Jerry J. of Story, WY, Lynn G. Hartman of the residence, Susie H. Larsen of Chesapeake, VA, and Wrenn Turner and husband Mark of Elizabeth City, NC; a son, Clyde N. Hartman, Jr. of Elizabeth City, NC; and seven grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at Carolina Memorial Park in Kannapolis, NC on Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at 1:00 PM. Christopher Lewis Stallings, 34, of LaGrange, NC died Wednesday, September 25, 2008 at Lenoir County Hospital. Mr. Stallings, born in Elizabeth City, NC, was the son of Bonnie Hilderbrand Stearns of Kitty Hawk, NC and the late Carl Stallings, Sr.
Besides his mother he is survived by his stepfather, Phillip Stearns; a brother of Carl W. Stallings, Jr., and wife Angela of Elizabeth City, NC; two step-brothers, Sean Stearns and Ryan Stearns both of Kitty Hawk, NC two nephews, Corey Stallings and Jason Stallings of Elizabeth City, NC.

Helen E. Rudolph
Norfolk- Helen Rudolph passed away September 25, 2008. She was born in Norfolk, September 27, 1931 to the late Bernadin Giguere and Lennie Brennecke. She worked 25 years at Addington Beamon Lumber Company and 15 years at Rudolph Construction. Mrs. Rudolph was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church.
She was predeceased by her parents, brother, Bernadin and her loving husband, soul mate and best friend, Joseph. Mrs. Rudolph leaves to cherish in her memory her daughter, Elaine; sons, Joseph Jr., wife Catherine, John, wife Debbie and Jim; her grandchildren Jason Rudolph, wife Michelle, Laura Hohbach, husband Josh, Anna Rudolph, Christina Rudolph, Jonathan Rudolph; great grandchildren Gabrielle and Joseph Hohbach; and special family friend, Jack Reynolds.
The family would like to give special thanks to Melanie; the Hospice team; Doctorsé’’ Wadsworth, Brown and McGaughey and staffs; and everyone who cared for Mrs. Rudolph during her illness.
A visitation will be held at Twiford Colonial Chapel, 929 S. Battlefield Blvd., Chesapeake on Friday, September 26, 2008 from 7:00 to 8:30 pm.
