Irma Joann Elliott Palmer, 69, of 452435 Dixie Hwy., Callahan, Florida, died Friday, October 31, 2008 in Winslow Memorial Home. Mrs. Palmer was born in Nassau Co., Florida, daughter of the late Robert A. and Louise Stacy Elliott and was the wife of Clyde Vincent Palmer of the home.

Cynthia A. Brown

Norfolk – Cynthia Ann Brown, 70, a resident of Shorewood Cove of Norfolk, went to be with the Lord on October 30, 2008.
A native of Rhode Island, she was a devoted wife of more than 45 years and mother to five sons. After sharing more than 20 years as a supportive wife of her husband’s career in the U.S. Navy, she then shared a ministry with her husband to countless military sons and daughters. She was an active member of Victory Baptist Church of Hampton.
Mrs. Brown was predeceased by her husband Leland, son Craig, mother and a brother. She is survived by four sons, Scott Brown of Indiana, Leland Brown Jr. and wife Betsy of Portsmouth, Kenneth Brown and wife Sally of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Shawn Brown and wife Dora of Chesapeake; 12 grandchildren, Barton Crowell, Sarah Nance, Jennifer Davis, Brandon Brown, Christina Hart, Jessica Brown, Jeremy Brown, Joel Brown, Sebastian Brown, Jared Brown, Jedadiah Brown and Autumn Brown; eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Marie Petis, and Jean Lopes and husband Billy of Rhode Island, and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Twiford Colonial Chapel, 929 S. Battlefield Blvd., Chesapeake. Funeral services will be held Saturday, 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. The burial will follow the services at Chesapeake Memorial Gardens.

Manteo, NC

Richard Orlando Scarborough, 54, of Manteo, died Sunday, October 26, 2008 at his residence from cardiac arrest. Mr. Scarborough was born in Manteo, the son of the late Richard ‘Sie’ Scarborough and the late Mary Caroline Burrus Scarborough. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Coast Guard, and was a member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church.

Mr. Scarborough is survived by three sons, Richard Sie Scarborough of Raleigh, NC, Michael Scott Scarborough of Greenville, NC and Brandon Lee Scarborough of Greenville, NC; three sisters, Margaret Louise Scarborough Dupree of West Point, TN, Jule Dee Scarborough of DeKalb, IL and Myrlene Talbot of Rocky Mount, NC; two brothers, Richard ‘Ricky’ Scarborough of Wanchese, NC and Reginald ‘Tinky’ Scarborough of FL.

A memorial service will be held at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church on Saturday, November 1, 2008 at 11:00 am, with Rev. Jerry Cribb officiating with friendship comments by Major Hooper. Friends are invited to join the family at a reception following the service in the church fellowship hall.

The family prefers donations directly to Mount Olivet United Methodist Church in program areas of Food Pantry, Building, or Scholarship Funds in lieu of flowers or other gifts.

Mattie White

Mattie Estes White, age 88, of 710 Grady Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, October 29, 2008 at the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. White, a native of Mathews County, VA, was the daughter of the late Thomas Preston Estes and Eva Gertrude Tate Estes and the widow of Robert Lee White. She was a meat wrapper for twenty-three years for the S & R Markets and attended St. Paul Free Will Baptist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Elaine White Craddock of Elizabeth City, NC, a son, Robert Wayne White of Elizabeth City, NC; a sister, Mildred Aldridge of Mathews, VA; a brother, Jerry Tate of Richmond, VA; three grandchildren, Steven Craddock of Grandy, NC, Scott Craddock of Elizabeth City, NC, and Jerrod White of Newport News, VA; four great grandchildren, Tiffany Craddock, Matthew Craddock, Ashleigh Craddock, and Robert Craddock; and one great great grandchild.

Funeral services will be in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel on Sunday, November 2, 2008 at 2:00 PM with the Rev. F. Joe Griffith and the Rev. Barbara Gibbs officiating. Herbert Lee Wiggins

Herbert Lee Wiggins, 69, of Como, NC passed away Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008 in Roanoke Chowan General Hospital in Ahoskie, NC. He was born in Como, NC and raised in Portsmouth, VA. He retired from active duty in 1980 and continued working for the US Army in Berlin, Germany until he returned home to Como, NC in 1997. He was a Vietnam veteran who received a Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Vietnam Service Medal and two Purple Heart Medals.

Cherishing his memory are his wife Evelin R. Wiggins, two daughters, Beverly Wiggins and husband, Deniz G. Uzel, of Chesapeake, VA , Shirl Boone and husband, Lindbergh, of Franklin, VA, two sons, Patrick Wiggins, of Berlin, Germany and Reginald Wiggins, his cousin Joseph Wiggins and wife Patricia Wiggins of Como, NC, his niece, Renee Ferrebee and husband, Michael of Tucson, AZ and his granddaughters, Brittany and Courtney Boone of Franklin, VA as well as many other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his mother, Mrs. Rosa M. Boone, his father, Mr. Richard Wiggins, his brother, Mark E. Wiggins and his wife, Victoria W. Wiggins of Portsmouth, VA.

Elizabeth Layden Perry

Elizabeth Layden Perry, 92, of 512 Okisko Road, Elizabeth City, NC died in the Albemarle Hospital Monday, October27, 2008. She was born in Belvidere, NC on September 19, 1916, to the late Edgar and Lula Asbell Layden and was the widow of the Cecil H. Perry, Sr. Mrs. Perry was a member of the Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church, a former member of the Pasquotank Ruritan Club Auxiliary and a former member of the Mt. Hermon Extension Homemakers Club.

She is survived by two daughter, Eva Lou Harrison and husband, Arthur, of Elizabeth City, NC and Ann Murphy of Charlotte, NC; one son, Cecil H. ‘Skeeter’ Perry, Jr. and wife, Virginia, of Elizabeth City, NC. Also, surviving are eight grandchildren, Robert Harrison, Sarah Mae Harrison, Regis Murphy III, Annmarie Murphy, Jennifer Jimenez, Cecil Harris Perry III, Robert Perry and Clark Perry; 16 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Mrs. Perry was preceded in death by a sister, Mae Williams and two brothers, Howard Layden and Willard Layden.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 3:00pm in the Twiford’s Memorial Chapel by Rev. Warren Heitzenrater. Burial will be in the New Hollywood Cemetery. George Roscoe Little, Jr.

George Roscoe Little, Jr., 96, died at home, Monday, October 27, 2008, of natural causes.

George Little was born January 22, 1912 to George Roscoe Little and Eva Pailin Little. He was a lifelong resident of Elizabeth City and retired owner/president of G.R. Little Insurance Agency.

After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1934, Mr. Little went on to be a Life Member of the Alumni Associates and a UNC Wilson Library Fellow. He was a devoted Carolina Tarheel, and attended every home football game possible until his health began to fade in recent years. He also served as advisor to many organizations throughout the UNC system including: the UNC Chapel Hill Board of Trustees and Board of Visitors, the UNC Chapel Hill Educational Foundation Board of Directors and the UNC Wilmington Board of Trustees, where he was a member as well as the chair.

As a World War II veteran, he enjoyed giving back to his community through civic organizations such as the Elizabeth City Rotary (member/president), the Elizabeth City Chamber of Commerce (member/president), and the Elizabeth City Boys Club (member/president). He was a lifelong member of Christ Episcopal Church where he could be seen every Sunday and where he served as both a Vestryman and Senior Warden.

He is preceded in death by his sons, George Roscoe Little III and Lenyer McCotter Little, daughter-in-law, Betty Jean Houtz Sanders Little, granddaughter, Lenyer Houtz Little, and his sister, Helen Little Wood, and brother-in-law, Lucky Wood.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Love McCotter Little, daughter, Joyce Little Wilkins and her husband Keith Graham Wilkins, daughter-in-law, Gray Brantley Little; five grandchildren: George Roscoe Little IV and wife Bess Harrell Little, Katharine Gray Little, Caroline Wilkins Ritchie and husband, Eric Ritchie, George McCotter Wilkins and wife Tara Wilkins, Esther Silva Wilkins; two great granddaughters, Carmen Love and Isabella Ritchie; a niece, Eva Carolina Bright and her husband Roger Bright; and dear family friends, Alvin & Peggy McPherson.

A burial service will be held at Wednesday, October 29th at 2pm at Christ Episcopal Church. The family will receive family and friends Tuesday, October 28th at 2127 Rivershore Road, Elizabeth City.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in Mr. Little’s name to the Albemarle Hospice at 311 Cedar Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909 or to the Organ Fund at Christ Episcopal Church, 220 McMorrine Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Cecelia Gray Midgett, 89, of Nags Head died Sunday, October 26, 2008 at Britthaven of Outer Banks. Born in Wanchese, she was the daughter of the late Richard Hooper Gray and the late Daisy Pugh Gray and was the widow of Jethro Hooper Midgett, Jr. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Midgett is survived by a son, Jeffrey G. Midgett of Manteo; two grandchildren, Jeffrey W. Midgett, Sr. of Manteo and Kristi Lea Wright and husband Aaron of Nags Head; three great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Larry Leon ‘Lennie’ Newton, 53, of 128 Dot Sears Road, Grandy, NC, died Thursday, October 23, 2008 at Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Pasquotank Co., NC, son of the late Larry Ellsworth and Shelby Jean Whittington Newton and was the husband of Pamela Savage Newton. He was a painter and a veteran of the US Army.

Besides in wife, Mr. Newton is survived by four daughters, Melanie, Lisa, Erin and Angela Newton all of Currituck, NC; one brother, Chad and his wife Judy Newton of Virginia, and four nieces, Christina, Jennifer, Amanda and Amber.
