Esther Evans Walker, 87, of 3479 Caratoke Highway, Maple, NC, died Saturday, November 29, 2008 at Sentara Nursing Center-Currituck. She was born in Currituck, NC, the daughter of the late Jessie and Sirley Woodhouse Walker and was the widow Milton Albert Walker. Mrs. Walker was a retired US Postal Service Clerk, she owned and operated Esther’s Beauty Shop, and was a member of Rehobath Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Sirley Jane McHorney of Chesapeake, VA; a son, Barry M. Walker and wife Nancy of Grandy, NC; four grandchildren, Tracey Rominger and husband Kirby, Lesley Kennedy and husband Lawrence, Darin Walker, and Nicole Walker; and three great grandchildren, Kelli, Shane, Nathan.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at 2:00 pm in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Rev. Lamar Herndon officiating. Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery. Mary White

Mary Goodwin White, 78, of Elizabeth City, NC died Saturday, November 29, 2008, in the Albemarle Hospital. She was born on July 18, 1930 in Chowan County, NC to the late Ernest and Minnie Perry Goodwin and was the widow of the late Percy Ray White, Sr. On the morning that the Angels took her to heaven; Jesus came to meet her with thousands of children with him. She was running into his open arms as fast as she could, and all the children gathered around her. Now these precious little ones have her sweet face to look at for eternity, and those gentle hands to hold them and Jesus said to our Mama, ‘you see Mary; I have a special job for you. Now all the glories of heaven are yours.’

Mrs. White is survived by four daughters, Frances White Stevenson and husband, Marshall, of Elizabeth City, NC, Barbara White Munden and husband, Wink, of Elizabeth City, NC, Marjorie White Layden of Elizabeth City, NC and Debra White Boyette of Missouri; three sons, Percy Ray White, Jr. and wife, Bonnie of Kissimmee, FL, Douglas Michael White and wife, Darlene of Powells Point, NC and Tony Wayne White and wife, Tiffany of Elizabeth City, NC. A sister, Thelma G. Outland of Norfolk, Virginia; a brother, Lloyd Ray Goodwin of North Carolina; 14 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren also survive her. Two sisters, Julia G. Caddy and Lillie Mae G. Sinner and three brothers, Edwin Goodwin, Roy Goodwin and Robert Goodwin, preceded Mrs. White in death.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, December 3, 2008, at 11:00am in the White Family Cemetery, Tyner, NC by Rev. David Turner. George E. Hewitt

George E. Hewitt, 99, of 690 Firetower Road, Elizabeth City, NC died Friday, November 28, 2008 at Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Hewitt, a native of Pasquotank County, was the son of the late Robert Clarence Hewitt and Alethia Chappell Hewitt and the widower of Virginia Dare Neece Hewitt. He was a US Army Veteran of WW II, a farmer, and a member of Ramoth Gilead Baptist Church.

He is survived by three sons, T. Edwin Hewitt of Evans, GA, Calvin H. Hewitt of Tacoma, WA, and David E. Hewitt of Elizabeth City, NC; a sister, Lillian Brothers of Elizabeth City, NC; a brother, Charlie Hewitt of Portsmouth, VA; five grandchildren, Talmadge E. Hewitt, Jr., Elizabeth Smith, Kristine Hewitt, Spencer Hewitt, and Marc Hewitt; and five great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be Monday, December 1, 2008 at 11:00 AM at Ramoth Gilead Baptist Church with the Rev. Ken Bunch officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Judson Cox Pritchard

Judson Cox Pritchard, age 76, of South Mills, NC, died Friday, November 28, 2008, at his residence. Mr. Pritchard was born in Camden County, NC, the son of the late Judson Orby Pritchard and Mattie Burnham Pritchard and the widower of Nancy Turner Pritchard. He was a member of Kempsville Baptist Church, Virginia Beach, VA.

Mr. Pritchard is survived by one daughter, Denise Pritchard Hennessy and husband, William, of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; two sons, William Lee Pritchard and wife, Mary B., of Gastonia, NC and Larry Cox Pritchard and wife, Diana P., of Plant City, FL; one sister, Jane Mayo Snead of Coinjock, NC; and nine grandchildren, Sarah, Rachael, Jessica, Katie, Mason, Victoria, Allyson, Daniel, and Hannah.

Janet Mae Heideman Fullmer

Janet Mae Heideman Fullmer, 66, 115 Terrilynn Way, Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday, November 27, 2008 at her residence. She was born in Buffalo, SD, the daughter of Mable Maynard Heideman Hinzman and the late Loren Heideman. She was a legal secretary for the Department of Justice and was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

Mrs. Fullmer is survived by her husband, Otis ‘Bud’ Fullmer of the residence; two daughters, Sandra Buhr and husband Robert of Chesapeake, VA and Susan Lebert and husband David of Virginia Beach, VA; two sisters, Lorene Mahin of Whapeton, ND and Lila Sever of Phoenix, AZ; two brothers, Richard Heideman of Indianapolis, IN and Jerry Hinzman of Brandon, SD; three grandchildren, David Lebert, Jr., Trisha Anne Lebert, and Bobby Buhr; and two great grandchildren, Nylah and Demarion. She was pre-deceased by her father, Loren Heideman, a brother, George Heideman and her stepfather, Clarence Hinzman.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at 4:00 pm at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Haywood Spruill

Haywood Spruill, Jr. 64, of Winter Haven FL, died Thursday, November 27, 2008, in the Winter Haven Florida hospital. He was born on January 24, 1944 in Roper, North Carolina to the late Haywood and Thelma Sykes Spruill. Mr. Spruill was a retired financial advisor and a graduate of East Carolina University.

He is survived by two daughters, Stephanie Nichols and husband, Les of Greensboro, NC and Kristi Braddock and husband, Tripp of Florence, SC; one sister, Thelma Childers and husband, Clyde of Spring Hill, TN and two brothers, James ‘Dick’ Spruill and wife, Barbara of Elizabeth City, NC and Carl Spruill and wife, Judy of Elizabeth City, NC. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Sarah, Joshua, Taylor and Sage.

Margaret Poyner Painter

Margaret Poyner Painter, 98, of 168 Puddin Ridge Road, Moyock, NC died Thursday, November 27, 2008 at her residence. She was born February 2, 1910 to the late Jette Wilson and Amanda Reese Poyner and was the widow of the late Frank Painter. Mrs. Painter was a member of the Moyock United Methodist Church where she was organist, pianist and choir member for over 35 years.

She is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins of which includes, Clara Reese Whitehurst and her family of Moyock, NC, Harry and Alice Faircloth and their family of Kitty Hawk, NC, Martin and Marilyn Poyner of Florida, Jimmy and Becky Hall of Moyock, NC and Charles and Lois Collins of Georgia. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Elizabeth Sanderlin, Frances Hall and Alice Stephens and a brother, Walter Poyner. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Mrs. Painteré’’s caregivers.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, November 29, 2008, at 2:00pm in Moyock United Methodist Church by Rev. Steve Castle. Burial will be in the Moyock Memorial Cemetery. Mary “T.C.” Bond Carter

Mary ‘T. C.’ Bond Carter, 27, of Elizabeth City, NC died in 2006. She was born in Elizabeth City, NC on December 12, 1978 to Lea Fentress Lamb of Elizabeth City and the late Richard Bond.

Besides her mother, Mrs. Carter is survived by a daughter, Angel K. Hardy of Elizabeth City, NC, a sister, Ronda L. Carter of California and a brother, Clifford Michael Bond of Elizabeth City. Also, she is survived by two very special friends, Bridgette and Rob. She was preceded in death by her step father, Norman G. Lamb.

Alethia Lacy Newbern

Alethia Lacy Newbern, 95, of 207 S. Griffin Street, Elizabeth City, NC died Sunday, November 23, 2008, in the Albemarle Hospital. She was born February 12, 1913 in Norfolk County, VA to the late James E. and Della Etheridge Lacy and was the widow of the late Willard W. Newbern. Mrs. Newbern lived in Elizabeth City, NC for the past 75 years, becoming a member of Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church, a member of the Bonoth Sunday School Class and the Joy Club. She was also a member of the Matoaca Council #10 Degree of Pocahontas and was a volunteer with the Albemarle Hospital Volunteer Services for 47 years.

Mrs. Newbern is survived by one daughter, Frances Newbern Via and husband, Cooper, of Blacksburg, VA; a son, Willard W. Newbern, Jr. and wife, Scarlett, of Elizabeth City, NC and six grandchildren, Thomas Cooper Via, Jr. and wife, Jo, of Blacksburg, VA, Christopher Newbern Via and wife, Mimi, of Blacksburg, VA, Elizabeth Turbyfill and husband, John, of Ferrum, VA, Sonja Leigh Hodges of Raleigh, NC, H. Clay Hodges and wife, Kelly, of Raleigh, NC and Scott Carter Newbern and wife, Tammy of Simi Valley, CA. Also, she is survived by 11 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Nettie Killian and Ruby Tarkington.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday morning, November 26, 2008, at 11:00am in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, Church Street, by Rev. Glenn Greenway. Cabell Reeves Powell

Nags Head, NC

Cabell Reeves Powell III (Reeves) was born on February 29, 1944, in Newport News, Virginia, and passed away at his home in Nags Head, North Carolina on Sunday, November 23, 2008 at the age of 64 after a long battle with lung cancer. Reeves is survived by his wife of twelve years, Susan, his son Michael Powell and his daughter Kristen Powell, his sister Nancy Luzier, and his stepsons Mark Henderson and Kevin Henderson. He is also survived by four grandchildren who adored him: Madeline and Elijah Henderson, and Kelsey and Connor Powell.

Reeves had a successful career in auto collision repair which he began by working as a bodyman in Arlington, Virginia in 1963. In 1977 he moved with his family to the Hampton Roads, Virginia area to open his first body shop. By 1986 he had opened two more collision centers, and he retired from the business in 1994. Reeves was an avid golfer, fisherman, and handyman.

A memorial service will be held at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, November 26 at Twiford Funeral Home, 500 Budleigh Street, Manteo, North Carolina with the Rev. Jimmy George, Jr. officiating. There will be a gathering afterward at the Old Nags Head Cove Clubhouse, 4512 S. Hesperides Drive, Nags Head NC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association, P.O.
