James Ernest Lamb, 68, of 822 Four Mile Desert Road, Hertford, NC died at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC on Saturday, January 31, 2009. A native of Perquimans County, NC he was born the son of the late Louis Dempsy Lamb and Ellie Ferrell Lamb, and was the husband of Louise Williamson Lamb of the residence. Mr. Lamb was a logger with J.W. Jones Lumber Company, President of the Four Mile Desert Hunting Club, and a member of the Albemarle Houndsman Association.

Besides his wife Mr. Lamb is survived by two daughters Pam and husband Frank H. Lilly, Jr., of Elizabeth City, NC and Kelly and husband Herman Belangia, Jr. of Hertford, NC two sisters Hattie L. Harris of Elizabeth City, NC and Florence L. Boone of Richmond, VA; one brother Maxie Lamb, Sr. and wife Alice Jean of Hertford, NC; four grandchildren Frank H. Lilly, III, Morgan Elizabeth Lilly, Lyndsey Mae Lilly, and Dylan Chase Belangia; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at 11:00 AM and officiated by the Rev. Donald Gregory and Rev. Stuart Meads. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the funeral home lobby following the service and other times at the residence. James A. Culifer

James Amos Culifer, 80, of 139 Pinto Drive, Moyock, NC died at his residence on Saturday, January 31, 2009. Born in Greenville, NC he was the son of Tessie Baker Kirby of Kenly, NC and the late Amos Cullifer, and was the husband of Charlotte Pearman Culifer of the residence. He was a retired truck driver for Consolidated Freight, and a commercial crabber.

Besides his wife and mother, Mr. Culifer is survived by five daughters Marie Pisacreta of Charleston, SC, Dianne Shaffier of Gilbert AZ, Teresa Perdue of Sanford, NC, Beverly Ray of Branchville, VA, and Janice Mannchen of Moyock, NC; one sister Mary Elizabeth Wilson of West Minister, MD; one brother Robert Edward Culifer of Kenly, NC; and a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at Moyock Assembly of God Church on Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at 12:00 Noon and will be officiated by Pastor Scott Pollard. Burial will follow at Moyock Cemetery. Susan V. Feamster

Susan Vermilya Feamster, 65, passed away Jan. 27, 2009, in her home surrounded by her loving family and friends. Born in Clifton Forge, VA, she was the daughter of the late Oakley Ellsworth and Ethel LeViness Vermilya. She was a loving wife, daughter and friend to all and will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved her.

She was predeceased in death by her daughter, Barbara Ann Feamster, brother, William Oakley Vermilya, father Oakley Ellsworth Vermilya, mother Ethel LeViness Vermilya and her husband of 39 years, James Franklin Feamster.

Susan graduated from Ahoskie High School in 1962 and stayed close with many of her classmates thru the years. They enjoyed each others lives as they remained close and they always had a good time together. Classmates Judi Ruffin, Pat Joyner and Lynda Robbins were especially close and spent many rewarding moments together. She was a member of Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church.

A graveside memorial service will be held in Clifton Forge, VA, at a later date. The family suggests tributes take the form of memorial donations to Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 900, Kitty Hawk, NC 27949.

Robert Fowler O’Neal, Sr.

Robert Fowler O’Neal, Sr., passed away Wednesday, January 28, 2009, at his home in Ocracoke, NC. He was the son of the late Robert Benjamin O’Neal and Fannie O’Neal. He is survived by his wife, Chloe Garrish O’Neal of the residence.

Mr. O’Neal was a native of Ocracoke and a Veteran of WWII, having served in the Coast Guard during the attack on Midway Island. He also worked and retired as a Quarter Master from the NC Ferry Division. He is predeceased by one sister, Gabriella O’Neal Smith and one brother, John Freeman O’Neal.

Mr. O’Neal is survived by two daughters, Gloria O’Neal Nash of Newport News , Virginia and Joan Ann O’Neal of McGrath, Alaska, one son, Robert Fowler O’Neal, Jr. of Ocracoke and one brother, Ronald T. O’Neal, also of Ocracoke. He is also survived by 8 Grandchildren and 2 Great-Grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held at Ocracoke United Methodist Church on Monday, February 2, 2009 at 1:00 pm.

Roy Waynick

Roy Edward Waynick, 82, of 193 Mill Road, Hertford, NC died Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at his residence. He was the son of the late Roy Robert Waynick and Myrtle Wilson Waynick and the widower of Annette Kooley Murphy Waynick. He was a retired CPO from the U.S. Navy serving in WW II, Korea and Vietnam over his twenty-five years of service.

He is survived by two sons, Randy Waynick and ‘Ronnie’ Ronald Waynick both of Virginia Beach, VA; one brother, Howard Waynick of Lincoln, NC; six grand children; and eight great grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by a daughter, Elaine Waynick.

A graveside funeral service will be Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at 12:00 p.m. at Salisbury National Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, February 1st. Millias Don Helms, Jr., 93 of Elizabeth City, NC died Tuesday, January 27, 2009 in the W. R. Winslow Memorial Home. He was born in Calhoun Falls, SC on November 23, 1915, to the late Millias Don Helms, Sr. and Addie Crook Helms. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie Rutter Helms. Mr. Helms was the former executive director of the Elizabeth City Boys Club from 1946 until 1977. After retiring from the EC Boys Club, Don served his community by working with EC Parks and Recreation for 21 years. In recognition for his dedicated service to the youth of our area, the EC Boys Club named the Little League Ball Park in his honor. He was a member of the Calhoun Falls, SC Masonic Lodge #283, a member and past Exalted Ruler of the B. P. O. Elks Club #856, a former District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler and in 1986, Mr. Helms was elected Grand Exalted Ruler for the State of North Carolina. He was a member and past president of the Elizabeth City Kiwanis Club, a lifetime member of the V.F.W. #6060 and a member of the Corinth Baptist Church. Earlier in his career, Don played professional baseball. In 1940, Mr. Helms entered the US Army and served during World War II with the 202nd Military Police Company. He was a decorated veteran having received the Europe-Africa-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 5 bronze stars.

He is survived by three daughters, Sandra McPherson and husband, Weston, of Kill Devil Hills, NC, Gale Barker and Gay Helms both of Elizabeth City, NC; two sons, Millias Don Helms, III and wife, Neva of Ellijay, GA and N. Clifton Helms and wife, Deanna of LaPlace, LA., seven grandchildren, Millias Don Helms, IV, Amy McDonald, Stephanie Astley, Harden Barker, Clay McPherson, Norman Clifton Helms, II, and Matthew Brent Helms; three great grandchildren, Andrew McDonald, Sarah Helms Astley and Ryan Millias McDonald, and several nieces and nephews also survive Mr. Helms.

#317, AF & AM will be held Thursday, January 29, 2009, at 3:00 p.m. in Twiford Memorial Chapel, Church Street, by Rev. David Turner and Mr. Jim Overman. Following the chapel service, the family will receive friends and relatives in the lobby of the funeral home. Minnie Faye Harris

Minnie Faye Wardlow Harris, age 60, of 307 South Hughes Boulevard, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Harris, a native of Maitland, MO, was the daughter of the late Jessie White Stull and the stepdaughter of the late Melvin Stull. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Harris is survived by a daughter, Julie Olson of Virginia Beach, VA; and four grandchildren, Lauren Shaw, Richard Shaw III, Alexis Shaw, and Danielle Olson.
