Stamatia ‘Tina’ Seneres, 62 of the 200 block of Harrell Street, Elizabeth City, NC died Thursday, April 30, 2009 at Winslow Memorial Home. Ms. Seneres, a native of the village of Psinthos on Rhodes Island, Greece, was the daughter of Tsampika Katavenos of Psinthos, Greece and the late Savvas Katavenos. She was a clerk and a homemaker and a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral.
Besides her mother she is survived by a daughter, Maria Seneres Reier and husband Bart of Cary, NC; a son, Raymond Seneres of Morrisville, NC; two sisters, Lefteria Katavenos and Nina Soria of Psinthos, Greece; a brother, Mihali Katavenos of Psinthos, Greece; and two grandchildren, Brett Reier and Bruce Reier.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 2, 2009 at 2:30 pm at Holy Family Catholic Church with The Very Rev. James Buchholz, V.F. officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Father Constantine Rogakos officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:30 pm until the time of the service. Robert (Bobby) W. White, 63, died Thursday, April 30, 2009 at Riverside Regional Medical Center. Mr. White was a native of Elizabeth City, NC. He was a dedicated employee as a Sergeant at Newport News City Farm for thirty years and a former employee at Perry Performance Chevrolet. Robert always believed family came first, and he truly was a loving husband and father.
Mr. White is survived by his loving wife Sandra (Joyce) White; his loving son, Jerrod T. White and Nannette A. Burnette of Newport News, VA; loving pet, Muffin; one sister, Elaine Craddock, seventeen nieces and nephews and several great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Robert L. and Mattie E. White.
A graveside funeral service will be held on Sunday, May 3, 2009 at New Hollywood Cemetery, Elizabeth City, NC at 2:00 pm with Pastor Barbara Ann Gibbs officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel. Raymond Smith
Frisco, NC
Raymond Charles Edward Smith, (1920 ‘ 2009) passed away peacefully in his sleep at Sentara Nursing Center in Barco. Mr. Smith was born in St. Louis, MO, grew up in Pittsburgh, PA and lived over half of his life on Hatteras Island. He was a veteran of WWII, where he served as a Lieutenant in the Army Air Corp in Europe. He completed 52 missions while in the service. He was a graduate of Carnegie Tech, (now Carnegie Mellon), majoring in Art. He was a prominent Architectural Designer in both Pittsburgh and the Outer Banks. Many of his paintings still serve as background for the habitat cases at Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh, PA.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ila M. Smith of Frisco; two daughters, Holly Smith-West of Frisco and Shawn M. Budd of Waterlily and a loving son-in-law, Tom Budd also of Waterlily; three grandchildren, Spring Weight and husband, Bryan of Pittsburgh, PA, Heather Gardner and husband, Krage of Manteo, NC, and Ben Budd of State College, PA; and four great-grandchildren, Daniel, Chase, Taylor and Ella.
In honoring his own request, a private memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, Hatteras, NC.

Charles Compher

Charles Curtis Compher, 79, of Frisco, NC passed away on Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at his residence. Mr. Compher was born in Waynesboro, PA, the son of Bernard and Lulu Good Compher. He was a retired meteorologist with the U.S. Air Force, where he received the National Defense Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal. He also worked with the National Weather Service and always signed off his report with ‘Enjoy your day.’ Mr. Compher’s favorite response when asked how he was doing was ‘Finer than Frog’s Hair!’
Mr. Compher is survived by his wife, Hulda Diffenderfer Compher of the residence; a daughter, Heather Robbins of Powells Point, NC; a son, Gregory C. Compher of Buckingham County, VA; a brother, Bernard Compher of Georgia; and four grandchildren, Laurel Compher, Jacob Compher, Robert Robbins, and Andrew Robbins.
A memorial service will be held at Buxton United Methodist Church on Sunday, May 3, 2009 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Cory Oliver officiating. Alston Eric Caroon, 77, of 144 Forbes Road, Jarvisburg, NC died Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Caroon, a native of Currituck, NC, was the son of the late Martin VanBuren Caroon and Eva O’Neal Caroon and the widower of Prudence Caroon. He was a Protestant, a graduate of William and Mary and a US Air Force Veteran of the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Caroon is survived by much family and many friends.

Maria M. Yaccarino, 91, of Kitty Hawk, formerly of Sunrise, FL, died Saturday, April 25, 2009 in Kill Devil Hills, NC. She was born in Brooklyn, NY and was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Joseph Yaccarino. She was a member of Holy Redeemer by the Sea Catholic Church and the G.E.M. Adult Respite Services.
Mrs. Yaccarino is survived by two sons, Steven Yacarrino and wife, Deborah of Kitty Hawk and Robert Yaccarino and wife, Isabella of Glen Head, NY; a daughter, Patricia Sunburg and husband, Dave of Hollywood, FL; a niece, Joan DeMattia of Sunrise, FL; ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

John Wilson Chambers, III, born February 21, 1948, went home to Heaven April 27, 2009. John fought a courageous battle against cancer since March 2006, and through his faith and determination had many miracles. He was the most loving, caring man anyone would ever meet and always had a smile for anyone. He worked for Preston Sears ‘Buddy’ at Bill Mann Concrete for nearly the last 19 years, after retiring from building bridges. He was a supervisor on the new bridge between Nags Head and Roanoke Island 20 years ago. He also was in the Coast Guard and did many other things in life too numerous to remember. Buddy was his best friend and they enjoyed many trips to Las Vegas over the years.
Mr. Chambers is survived by his loving wife, Lorri Chambers whom he shared his life for nearly the last 10 years. She stood by him and helped him fight his battle, and loved him more than words could ever express. He has a loving family of three beautiful daughters, Myra Keith and her husband Tom, Marie Taylor and her husband Scott, and Denise Smith and her husband Dale; his son, John Chambers; 9 grandchildren, Marianne, Samantha, Matthew, twin granddaughters, Ashley and Brianna, Jonathan, Benjamin, Brittney, and Tyler; four step-grandchildren; a sister, Jeanette Chambers and her husband RC and their sons, Chris and Brian; his step-children, Laureta Linnet and husband Justin, Larisa Pardo, and Louis-Andrew Pardo; an Uncle, Jimmy Dixon and wife Annette; and cousins Sheila Hart, Diane Flowers and her husband Jimmy, and their families. His dog, Winston, has shared the last 18 months making him happy. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 33 years, Sharon.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 4, 2009 at First Christian Church, 701 Parsonage Street, Elizabeth City, NC at 11:00 am. A second memorial service will be held on May 18, 2009 at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, 500 Budleigh Street, Manteo, NC at 11:00 am. Virginia Beach-Elnora Elizabeth Gallop Midgett, 94, went home to be with Jesus on April 27, 2009. She was the daughter of the late Ezekiel and Elena Gallop, and a native of Wanchese, NC. Nora was a devoted wife and mother. She was predeceased by husband Lloyd Midgett; daughter, Minnie Lee Midgett Shankster; and eight siblings, Elwood, Elton, Elva, Elbert, Ebert, Eloise, Ezeta and Early.
Left to cherish her memory are daughter, Linda Midgett of Virginia Beach; two brothers of Wanchese NC, Ezekiel ‘Roscoe’ Gallop and wife Gilda and Erbe Gallop and wife Mary; three grandchildren of Virginia Beach, Brenda Dale Bridges Caruana, Lloyd ‘Bud’ Seibert and wife Angel and Carol Lee Seibert Scherer; great grandchildren Marni Lea Caruana, Angie Elizabeth Caruana, Kelly Kello, Jennifer Seibert and Callie Joy Scherer. Numerous Nieces, Nephews and Grand Nieces and Nephews.
Nora was ‘BigMom’ to everyone she knew and Nanny to her grandchildren. Devotion and Love to her family was what she was known for. A wonderful cook, she leaves a legacy of love that will extend too many generations. A woman who shared the love of God, and displayed it to all that she met. Some people come into your hearts and leave footprints that will last forever. Bigmom’s footprints have marked the hearts of many. The family chain seems broken and nothing seems the same, but as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again. Mom, Bigmom, Nanny, Sister, Aunt, and Friend we love you.

James Lloyd Williams, 88, of 102 Needham Drive, Shiloh, NC, died at Albemarle Hospital on Sunday, April 26, 2009. A native of Pasquotank County, NC he was born the son of the late Eddie and Addie Key Williams, and was the widower of Elizabeth Johnson Williams. He was a retired farmer.
Mr. Williams is survived by one daughter Ruby Needham of Shiloh, NC; three sisters Marie Stallings, Agnes Ivey and Ann Roughton, all of Elizabeth City, NC; two Brothers Carlos Williams and Charlie Williams both of Elizabeth City, NC; two grandchildren, Charlotte Saunders and Glen Needham, Sr.; and six great grandchildren, Glen Needham, II, Preston Needham, Whitney Needham, Mark Saunders, Sean Saunders and Taylor Needham. Besides his parents and wife he was predeceased by one son Franklin Williams and one brother Gather Williams, Sr.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, and officiated by the Rev. David Combs.
