Thomas Argustus Markham, 77, of 604 Esclip Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, May 30, 2009 at his residence. He was born in Pasquotank County, NC, to the late Stanton Woodley and Minnie Sawyer Markham. Mr. Markham was a member of Newbegun United Methodist Church, a former member of the Weeksville Lions Club and Weeksville Volunteer Fire Department and was a retired farmer. He also was a member of the Eureka Lodge 317 AF & AM, New Bern Scottish Rites Consistory #3, OES Chapter 44, Sudan Shriners, and the Elizabeth City York Rite Bodies.
Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years, Mary Tarkington Markham; three daughters, Louise M. Taylor and husband Gene of Seaboard, NC, Brenda M. Schachle and husband Keith of Brooks, GA, and Karen M. Askew and husband Tim of Elizabeth City, NC; two sons, Thomas A. Markham, Jr. and wife Linda and Marvin E. Markham and wife Annette both of Columbia, NC; ten grandchildren, Ron H. Pippen, Wendy Gatewood and husband Chris, Jason Markham and wife Cindy, Blair Markham and wife Maggie, Amy Heath, Heather Markham, Lori Schachle, Kevin Schachle, Christie Askew, and Daniel Askew; five great grandchildren, Ronald Pippen, Ryan Pippen, Markham Gatewood, Andrew Gatewood, and Tripp Markham; and three step-grandchildren, Angela T. Martin and husband Darrin, Edward N. Taylor, and Zachary Taylor. Besides his parents, Mr. Markham was preceded in death by a brother, Carroll Markham.
A funeral service will be held Monday, June 1, 2009 at 11:00 am at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Rev. Roger Braun and Rev. Para Drake officiating. Burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends at the home. Joyce Whittington, 73, passed in Ahoskie, North Carolina on May 30, 2009. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter S. Whittington. She is survived by 2 daughters; Donna Rhoades and Linda Rush, 2 sons Lonnie Warren and Charles Warren,4 brothers and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Twiford Colonial Chapel is handling the arrangements. A graveside service will be held at Chesapeake Memorial Gardens on Cedar Road in Chesapeake on Friday, June 5th @ 1:00 pm.

Alma Estelle Ambrose Edwards, 88, of Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, May 30, 2009 at Winslow Memorial Home. She was born in Washington County, NC, to the late Richard Carmell and Alma Phelps Ambrose and was the widow of Mitchell Detroit Edwards. Mrs. Edwards was a member of Saint Paul Original Free Will Baptist Church and retired from the Elizabeth City Hosiery Mill.
Survivors include a daughter, Sybil Edwards Meads of Elizabeth City, NC; a sister, Christine Ambrose Barnes of Creswell, NC; three grandchildren, Jeff Meads, Mike Meads, and Kent Edwards; and five great grandchildren. Besides her husband and parents, Mrs. Edwards was preceded in death by a daughter, Hilda Faye Edwards and a son, Jerry Edwards.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at 2:00 pm at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends at the funeral home Monday evening from 7:00 until 8:00 pm and at other times at the residence of the grandson, Kent Edwards, 205 Troy Drive, Elizabeth City, NC. Patrick John Riley, III, 79 years of age, died on May 28, 2009. The son of Patrick J. Riley, Jr. and Madeleine Bruns Riley, he was born in Norfolk, VA and raised in Portsmouth, VA. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Louise Sterling Riley, son Ross Sterling Riley, and wife Karen of Manns Harbor, daughter Patricia Riley Jump and husband Ralph of Manteo, grandson Tyler Riley , great granddaughter Emma Riley, brother James Riley and wife Donna of Suffolk, VA.
John graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy and attended the University of Richmond and Roanoke College. He was a member of the Norfolk Rotary Club and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. He tutored English as a second language through the College of the Albemarle until he became ill. John was Vice President at J.W. Burress, Inc. at the time of his retirement.
A celebration of life will be held at the graveside in Roanoke Island Memorial Gardens, Sunday, May 31, 2009, at 3:00 p.m. by Rev. Jerry Cribb. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of choice.

Joseph “Joe” Andreano
Chesapeake ‘ Joseph ‘Joe’ Andreano passed away on May 28, 2009 at his residence with his family at his side. He was born in Mt. Carmel, PA to the late Natale and Elizabeth Andreano. Joe served honorably in the US Navy for over 20 years, was an active member of the Knights of Columbus and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). He was a founding member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Byzantine Catholic Church. Joe was an entrepreneur and the owner/operator of Pennsylvania Dutch Funnel Cakes. A businessman who introduced funnel cakes, a ‘Pennsylvania Dutch’ regional specialty food, to Virginia. He was predeceased by a sister, Marie Adams.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 53 years, Kathleen; three sons, Joseph, John and his wife, Sara, and James; brother, Nat and sister Louise who reside in PA; six grandchildren, Joseph, Elizabeth, Daniel, Jonathan, Michael and Jordan; and one great grandchild, Hailey.
On Wednesday, June 3, 2009 a viewing will be held from 6-9 pm with a Panachida Service at 7:30 pm at Twiford Funeral Home, 929 Battlefield Blvd, S., Chesapeake, VA. A Parastas Service will be held on Thursday at 10:00am at the funeral home followed by a Liturgy service at 11:00 am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Byzantine Catholic Church located at 216 South Parliament Drive, Virginia Beach, VA. Burial will follow at St. Stephen Martyr Roman Catholic Church’s Mausoleum Garden, 1544 Battlefield Blvd, S, Chesapeake with full military honors. Mary Elizabeth Orr, 52, of 103 Dogwood Drive, Moyock, NC died Tuesday, May 26, 2009 in Tazewell County, VA. She was born in Buchanan, VA the daughter of the late Hulet Vincent and Gracie Ball Johnson and was the wife of Mr. Ronnie Daniel Orr of the residence. She had worked as a restaurant manager.
Along with her husband, Mrs. Orr is survived by her daughters, Tabetha Orr and Starr Witucki, both of Moyock, NC; sons James Orr of Tucson, AZ, and Elvis Orr of Chesapeake, VA; three brothers, and four sisters. She also is survived by eight grandchildren whom she truly loved.
A graveside funeral service will be held Saturday, May 30, 2009 at 2:00 pm at Moyock Memorial Cemetery, Moyock, NC with Pastor Dale Forbes officiating. Clarissa Ann Jones, infant daughter of Mr. Brian Keith Jones and Ms. Stephanie Tew, peacefully passed away Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at Duke Hospital, Durham, NC. Though her life was very brief, she will remain forever in the hearts of those who loved her.
Along with her parents, Clarissa is survived by her sister, Kayla Tew; maternal grandmother, JoAnne Nelson of Elizabeth City, NC; paternal grandfather, Michael Glenn Jones, Sr. of Elizabeth City, NC; paternal grandmother and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Joe and Teresa Ivey of Coinjock, NC; paternal great-grandmother, June Creef Jones of Elizabeth City, NC; uncles, Edward Tew, Mike Jones, and Brent Jones; aunt, Kelli Jones; and a cousin, Edward Tew, Jr.

Phyllis Sawyer Evans, 77, of Tulls Creek Road, Moyock, NC died Monday, May 25, 2009, at Chesapeake General Hospital. Born in Manns Harbor, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Forrest and Millicent Sawyer and the widow of Edgar “Pug” Evans. She was of the Methodist faith and was an avid bingo player of many years at the Sligo Fire Station.
She is survived by sons, Steven R. Evans and Bryan M. Evans both of Tulls Creek Road, Moyock, NC; and four brothers, Stanford “Poochie” Sawyer of Manteo, NC; Reginald Sawyer of Valona, Georgia; Douglas and John Sawyer of Darien, Georgia; and one sister, Pat Sawyer Todd of Valona, Georgia, and several nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Lester and Rodney Sawyer, preceded her in death.
A memorial service will be held at Twiford Memorial Chapel, Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC on Thursday, May 28, 2009, at 4:00 in the afternoon.
