Lena Milici Spencer, 55, of Wanchese, died Friday, August 28, 2009, in Norfolk, VA. Mrs. Spencer was born in New Haven, CT and was a sales manager for Kmart.
She was predeceased by her parents, Adolph and Rose Clark Milici and was the wife of Claude Edward Spencer, SR of Wanchese and four grandchildren.
At the request of Mrs. Spencer, there will be no services scheduled.

Fletcher C. Hoggard, Jr.

Fletcher Colbert Hoggard, Jr., 78, of Ocracoke, died Monday, August 31, 2009 in Nags Head, NC. Mr. Hoggard was born in Norfolk, VA, the son of Fletcher C. Hoggard, Sr. and Catherine Phillips Hoggard. He a veteran, having served as a Sonarman in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Vietnam War and the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was a member of the Ocracoke United Methodist Church.
Besides his parents, Mr. Hoggard is preceded in death by a daughter, Melinda Hoggard Williams and a brother, Earl Ray Hoggard.
He is survived by his wife, Merian Garrish Hoggard of the residence; a daughter, Kathy O’Neal and husband, David of Ocracoke; a son-in-law, Kemp Williams of Hampton, VA; a sister, Julia Ann Coppedge of Virginia Beach, VA; two brothers, William Edward Hoggard of Virginia Beach, VA and James Raymond Hoggard of Richmond, VA; three grandchildren, David Fletcher O’Neal and wife, Heather, Eric Kemp Williams and wife, Diana, and Rachel Cameron O’Neal; five great-grandchildren, David Hunter O’Neal, Ethan Somers O’Neal, Grayson Brandt O’Neal, William Golden O’Neal and J.R. Winall; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at the Ocracoke United Methodist Church on Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Joyce Reynolds and Rev. Sam Garris officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the Ocracoke Volunteer Fire Dept. or the Ocracoke United Methodist Church Recreation Hall Fund.

Richard E. “Dick” Aiken
Richard Eustace ‘Dick’ Aiken, Jr., 91, of 1812 Rivershore Road, Elizabeth City, NC died Sunday, August 30, 2009, at his residence. He was born in Pittsboro, NC on August 11, 1918, to the late Richard E. Aiken, Sr. and Mary Charlotte Nooe Aiken. Mr. Aiken was a retired certified public accountant, a member of the First United Methodist Church, Elizabeth City Rotary Club, The Pines Golf and Country Club of Elizabeth City and the golfing group, Mother’s Brothers. He was a graduate of University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, Class of 1940 and was an US Navy veteran having served in World War II.
Mr. Aiken is survived by his wife, Marion Karterman Aiken of the home, five daughters, Elizabeth Aiken Locher and husband, Gerry, of Lexington, VA, Jacqueline Aiken Haskett and husband, Keith, of Hertford, NC, Andrea Aiken Wilson and husband, John, of Arlington, VA, Mary Richard Aiken, of Elizabeth City, NC and Stacy Aiken Small and husband, Mark, of Elizabeth City, NC. Also, he is survived by one step daughter, Carol Weeks Zraket and husband, George, of Scottsdale, AZ, two step sons, Frank Weeks and wife, Geraldine, of Elizabeth City, NC and Harry Weeks and wife, Linda, of Hendersonville, NC; 32 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Mr. Aiken was preceded in death by his first wife, Marjorie Armstrong Siebers Aiken.
A memorial service will be held 11:00am, Tuesday, September 1, 2009, at First United Methodist Church by Rev. Mike Frese. Diane Rogerson Copeland, 51, of 489 Old Neck Road, Hertford, NC died Sunday, August 30, 2009, in the Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, NC. She was born on October 17, 1957 in Chowan County, NC to Selma Bryant Rogerson Lane of Hertford, NC and the late Thomas Rogerson. She was a lifelong resident of Perquimans County, NC, member of the Anderson United Methodist Church, a graduate of Perquimans County High School, Class of 1976 and was deputy clerk for the Perquimans County Clerk of Superior Court.
Besides her mother, she is survived by her husband, Richard H. Copeland of the home, a sister, Carolyn Ricks and husband Ricky, of Edenton, NC; a step sister, Debbie Weyant of Pikeville, TN; four step-brothers, Larry Lane, Jr. of Charlottesville, VA, David Lane of Hertford, NC, Tim Lane of HI, and Terry Lane of Pikeville, TN. Several nieces, nephews, and friends also survive her. Her stepfather, Larry Lane, preceded her in death.
Graveside services will be 11:00 am, Wednesday, September 2, 2009, in the Cedarwood Cemetery in Hertford, NC, by Minister Greg Biggs. The family will receive friends and relatives at her residence, 489 Old Neck Road, Hertford, NC and also at her mother’s residence, 286 Beech Spring Road, Hertford, NC. Chesapeake ‘ Irma H. Silvester, 84, died peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones on Sunday August 30, 2009. Mrs. Silvester was born in Edwardsville, VA to the late Train and Myrtle Anderson Hatton. She was a member of Northwest Baptist Church and had worked as a Post Master for the US Postal Service. Mrs. Silvester was predeceased by her husband, Wilbur Silvester, brother Anderson Hatton and grandson, Chadwick Carr.
Left to cherish her memory are daughters, Elizabeth Ann Ware and husband, Edward of Boones Mill, VA, Mary Catherine Carr and husband Bob of Kilmarnock, VA, Donna Wisswell and husband Butch of Chesapeake; sons, James William Silvester and wife Peggy of Jacksonville, NC, Wilbur E. Elizabeth Ellen ‘Buffy’ Hanchett Snyder, 66 of 102 Margaret Drive Camden, NC died Sunday August 30, 2009 at her residence. She was born in Elgin, Illinois daughter of the late Walter Lewis and Mrs. Carolyn Marjorie Stickling Hanchett. Mrs. Snyder was a seamstress and a member of the Christian Missionary Alliance Church in Appleton, WI.
She is survived by her husband Jerry Lynn Snyder of the home, one daughter Beth Ellen Hust and husband William Pepper of Puyallup, WA, one son Timothy Lynn Snyder and wife Amanda of Virginia Beach, VA, one sister Sarah Gutierrez of Catonsville, MD, five brothers Thomas Lynn Hanchett of CO, David Lewis Hanchett of AZ, Mark Owen Hanchett of MD, Jonathan Gavin Hanchett of WI, Samuel Philip Hanchett of Ukraine and seven grandchildren.

Dorothy Louise Jennings Mills, 77, of 26 Timmerman Drive, Elizabeth City, NC died Saturday, August 29, 2009 at her residence. Mrs. Mills, a native of Portsmouth, VA was the daughter of the late Jerome Jennings and Stella Barnes Jennings and the wife of Thomas Harvey Mills, Jr., of the residence. She was a member of Pearl Street Pentecostal Church and an Administrative Assistant at Heritage Care Assisted Living.
Besides her husband she is survived by seven sons; Thomas A. Mills, III and wife Beatrice of Blacksburg, VA, Henry Mills and wife Peggy of Tabor City, NC, Marty Livingston and wife Anita of Camden, NC, Rusty Mills of VA, Ray Livingston and wife Vivian Scott Mills and wife Janne, and Donald Mills and wife Lisa all of Elizabeth City, NC; two sisters, Carol Nimmow of WI and Wanda Miller of IL; three brothers, Wayne Jennings, Larry Wnukoski and Robert Wnukoski all of VA; seven grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

Claude D. Howard

Claude Dudley Howard, 86, of Rodanthe, NC died Thursday, August 27, 2009 at The Outer Banks Hospital. Born in Cary, NC, he was the son of the late Barton Hill Howard and Captain Mary Dudley Howard. He was a retired veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps having served for 20 years including tours during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was also a former public school teacher, a founding member of the Chicamacomico Banks Volunteer Fire Department, and a very active volunteer of the Dare County EMS on Hatteras Island.
Mr. Howard is survived by his wife, Nancy Wilkerson Dickens Howard of the residence; a son, Claude Dudley Howard, Jr. and wife, Sara of Tallahassee, FL; a grandson, Christopher D. Howard of Sacramento, CA; and two step grandsons, Major Gerald Caldwell, USMC and Ralph E. Caldwell.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2009 at 1:00 PM at the Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Community Building by the Rev. Tom Murphy. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Chicamacomico Banks Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 125, Rodanthe, NC 27968.

Norfolk ‘ Mary J. Hill, 68, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 25, 2009. She was born in Wanchese, NC to the late William Benjamin and Frances Quidley Jackson of Buxton, NC. Mrs. Hill had lived in several cities, including Key West and St. Petersburg, FL before settling down in the Ocean View section of Norfolk, where she worked as a cook at the Sandbar Restuarnt. She was a member of East Ocean View Baptist Church and was known for her famous potato salad.
Left to cherish her memory are friend and companion of 21 years, George Gallett; daughter, Marjorie Mary Galbrecht; sons Russell Eick and Tommy Hill; brother, Chaplain William Willis; grandchildren, Cindy Anne Williams, Tommy Williams Galbrecht, JR and Kinsey J. Hill; and a host of friends and ‘Bingo’ buddies.
The family will receive friends at East Ocean View Baptist Church, 9609 9th Bay Street, Norfolk, on Sunday from 4:00pm until 6:00 pm. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 10:00am at the church with Dr. Charles Stover officiating. A reception will follow services. Burial will be held on Tuesday at 10:00am in the Quidley Cemetery in Buxton, NC.

Donald Richard Hartzler, 71, of Goshen, Indiana, residing at Spring Arbor in Kill Devil Hills, passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2009. Born in Bellefontaine, Ohio, on November 28, 1937, he was the son of the late Lloyd D. Hartzler and Geneva L. Yoder- Hartzler.
Mr. Hartzler is survived by his two children, Julie O’Neill (Ken) and Brian Hartzler (Donna), both residing in Kill Devil Hills, two sisters, Ann Moffitt and Nancy Holliday, both residing in West Liberty, Ohio, and a brother, Larry Hartzler of Decatur, Mississippi. He is also survived by 5 Grandchildren, Katie, Nicholas, Christina, Sarah and Emily, who are deeply grateful for the time spent with him in North Carolina and will cherish their fond memories. He was a sincere father, brother, grandfather and friend and was loved and will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate to know of his kindness.
A private Memorial Service is being planned for a later date in West Liberty, Ohio where Mr. Hartzler spent his childhood years.
